Matt Damon's Interstellar Cameo, Explained
Image
"Interstellar" represents a lot of firsts for Christopher Nolan. The 2014 sci-fi movie was the first time the director infused one of his stories with some real heart and treated it as if it were just as important as any of the philosophical musings which typically guide his films. As such, "Interstellar" became Nolan's heartfelt masterpiece, not only making time for emotional exploration but also arguing for love itself as our only means of transcending the inexorable march of time.

"Interstellar" was also the first time Nolan worked with Dp Hoyte van Hoytema, who has since served as cinematographer on three of the British director's other films. It was also the first time Nolan worked with Matt Damon, who for a long time had been an outspoken fan of the director. Even after his brief appearance in "Interstellar," Damon was angling for a bigger role in a Nolan film, which he...

Everything We Know About Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’
Image
As casting announcements continue to roll in, speculation and excitement has only grown surrounding Christopher Nolan’s follow-up to his critical and box office hit “Oppenheimer,” which won him the Academy Award for best director.

“The Odyssey” is a classic piece of literature by Homer that is divided between 24 different books, preceded by “The Iliad.” It tells the 10-year journey story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, as he travels home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he encounters multiple perils and discovers the death of his crewmates. Telemachus (Odysseus’ son), Penelope (Odysseus’ wife), Athena, Circe, Poseidon and Zeus are all major characters.

Historians and scholars date “The Odyssey” to sometime between 750-650 BC. The first printed Greek version became available in 1488. In the centuries since, it has remained one of the most studied, adapted and parodied stories ever with adaptations including the 1911 silent film by Giuseppe de Liguoro, 1954’s...

When Cillian Murphy’s Piercing Eyes Turned Into An Unexpected Challenge For His Oppenheimer Co-Stars: “It’s A Real Problem”
Image
Here’s How Cillian Murphy’s Gaze Became Challenging For Oppenheimer Cast (Photo Credit – Facebook)

Cillian Murphy’s performance in Oppenheimer was spectacularly distracting. And we’re not saying that. Some of his co-stars said so when discussing what it was like to share the screen with him. Matt Damon, who played General Leslie Groves in Christopher Nolan’s magnum opus, alluded that Murphy’s piercing blue eyes made it difficult to stay in character.

“It’s a real problem when you’re doing scene work with Cillian. Sometimes you find yourself just swimming in his eyes,” Damon said in an exclusive interview with People, with Emily Blunt chiming in, “It’s like that Ocean Eyes song by Billie Eilish. We just hum it all day.”

Cillian Murphy, ever the humble actor, tried to downplay the hype. “They’re not even that blue!” he insisted. But it was clear that...

Image
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey boasts a strong ensemble cast as the Oscar-winning director looks to bring one of his most ambitious projects to life. One member of that cast and a long-time Nolan collaborator, Matt Damon, confirms his involvement with a cheeky nod to the upcoming adaptation.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter while shooting a Super Bowl commercial opposite soccer legend David Beckham, Damon was asked about The Odyssey and any details he could relay about his involvement. Though Damon didn't share any information about The Odyssey, he shared that he would be involved in the project with a pun-filled reply. “I literally have an odyssey in front of me,” he said.

Did Cillian Murphy Skip On All ‘Oppenheimer’ Cast Dinners?
Image
Did Cillian Murphy choose to skip out on cast gatherings for Oppenheimer? (Photo Credit – Facebook)

This list of things that Cillian Murphy ignored included joining the cast for dinner. According to Matt Damon, who plays General Leslie Groves in Christopher Nolan’s WWII epic, Murphy was so consumed by the magnitude of his role that he skipped the cast’s ensemble dinners. “His brain was just too full,” Damon told People magazine, explaining that Murphy’s commitment to the intense role left him little room for anything outside the work.

Emily Blunt, who played Oppenheimer’s wife Kitty, chimed in, acknowledging just how monumental Murphy’s workload was. “The sheer volume of what [Murphy] had to take on and shoulder is so monumental,” she said. “Of course, he didn’t want to come and have dinner with us.” Murphy, for his part, admitted to People that the weight of such a...

Matt Damon's Oppenheimer Character Explained (& What The Actor's Said About His Role)
Image
Matt Damon's appearance in Oppenheimer as Lt. General Leslie Groves is as memorable as any in the celebrated historical epic. The cast of Oppenheimer is filled with some of the biggest heavy-weight actors playing some of the most important people in recent American history. It's a bit darkly humorous that it took an Englishman like Christopher Nolan to thoroughly examine one of the most defining moments of the United States. Dozens of real critical figures are accounted for in Oppenheimer, some for a scene, others as main characters.

After a brief but critical role in Interstellar, Matt Damon finally got a starring part in a Nolan production. Damon's career really does not need much introduction. He's been headlining movies for the greatest working directors since his debut in Donald Petrie's Mystic Pizza. There's never really been a down year for him. While he's succeeded in playing every type of character,...

Ridley Scotts $630 Million Space Movie Pulled Genius A Trick That Also Helped Christopher Nolans Oppenheimer 8 Years Later
Image
Ridley Scotts $630 million space movie, The Martian, used a clever trick that also helped Christopher Nolans Oppenheimer 8 years later. The Martian was released in 2015 and follows the story of lonely astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) as he struggles to survive on Mars after being left behind by his crew. The 2015 space movie was a box office success and was even praised by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, most notably due to The Martians screenwriters dedication to scientific accuracy. Interestingly, NASA even provided a helping hand in depicting science and technology throughout the movie to promote space exploration.

The Martian has a rare 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes for both the Tomatometer and Popcornmeter, with viewers praising Matt Damons weight-loss transformation as a dedication to his role and the movies deeper themes of isolation. However, the movie does suffer from a long runtime. Mark Watney spends a long time on Mars in The Martian,...

Interstellars Villain Twist Just Got Even Better 10 Years After Christopher Nolans Space Epic
Image
Interstellar's villain twist with Dr. Mann has aged well in the decade since the Christopher Nolan movie was released. The 2014 movie saw Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), Dr. Amelia Brand (Anne Hathaway), Doyle (Wes Bentley), Professor Romilly (David Gyasi), and the robots Tars and Case (Bill Irwin) travel across space and time to find a hospitable planet for humans. The second planet they traveled to was an icy world where the scientists found Dr. Mann, a NASA astronaut from the Lazarus program who had been there for decades.

While McConaughey, Hathaway, and the rest of Interstellar's cast members were prominently featured in the marketing, the actor playing Dr. Mann was kept a secret. This made it all the more surprising to see Matt Damon in the role, since he was and continues to be one of the biggest names in Hollywood. The surprise did not end there, however, as Dr.

Christopher Nolan's New Movie Casting, 10 Years In The Making, Is Perfect After Oppenheimer
Image
The next Christopher Nolan movie has reportedly found its star, and he both completes a 10-year setup and perfectly follows the director's last film, Oppenheimer. It's already hard to rank all of Christopher Nolan's movies, but the director seems to be looking to make it even more difficult with his next film. With such classics as The Dark Knight, Inception, and Memento, climbing the ranks of Nolan's best films won't be easy. The director's next movie has a unique advantage though: a casting choice that follows in Oppenheimer's footsteps and fulfills a ten-year-old setup.

After 12 feature films, Christopher Nolan has worked with a long list of incredibly famous actors. Nolan's various Oscar wins and his respected reputation also mean that he could essentially convince anyone to star in his films with little convincing. With so much prestige and casting power, however, his choices for leading actors are even more important.

Image
Josh Hartnett revealed during an interview on “The Tonight Show” (via Entertainment Weekly) that Matt Damon advised him on the set of Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” not to gain any weight for his role. The only problem is that Hartnett had already packed on the pounds to play Nobel Prize-winning nuclear physicist Ernest Lawrence. Damon starred in the film as Manhattan Project director Leslie Groves.

“[Matt] gave me a lot of good advice. One in particular — one thing that was just so unhelpful: he told me not to gain the weight I’d already gained for the role,” Hartnett said. “I gained about 30 pounds for the role, and he was like, ‘You’re never gonna get that off again, man.’”

According to Hartnett, Damon’s rule of thumb is that you just “don’t gain weight over 40” for any movie role because it’s near impossible to shed the pounds.

“He’s like,...

How Much Cillian Murphy & The Oppenheimer Cast Was Paid
Image
Cillian Murphy reportedly received $10 million for playing the titular role in Oppenheimer, which marked his first time starring as a leading man in a Christopher Nolan movie. Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, and Matt Damon each got paid $4 million for supporting roles, a significant pay cut for the opportunity to work with Nolan. Other cast members like Florence Pugh and Benny Safdie were reportedly paid relatively lower salaries for their roles in Oppenheimer.

Oppenheimer may have been a box office smash, but some of the A-listers in the star-studded cast didn't get paid as much as one might've guessed to star alongside Cillian Murphy in Christopher Nolan's historical drama. Based on the true story of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), known as the "father of the atomic bomb," Oppenheimer was both a critical and commercial success. In part thanks to 2023's "Barbenheimer" phenomenon, Oppenheimer raked in nearly $1 billion worldwide at...

Oppenheimer's Death Explained: Cause Of Death, How Old He Was & How Long After The Movie He Died
Image
J. Robert Oppenheimer died of throat cancer at 62. Oppenheimer died in 1967, four years after the events of Christopher Nolan's 2023 epic biographical movie. The theoretical physicist's legacy has shifted after his death, sparking debate on his character.

Oppenheimer depicts the life and career of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who aided in the development of the first nuclear weapons during World War II, but the movie doesn't explain when and how he died. The epic biographical thriller drama, directed and written by Christopher Nolan, follows Oppenheimer's life from his studies at the University of Cambridge in the mid-1920s to President Lyndon B. Johnson awarding him the Enrico Fermi Award, a lifetime achievement scientific medal, in 1963. Ultimately, Oppenheimer's timeline isn't linear as it jumps back and forth between different periods but still never shows Oppenheimer's death.

Oppenheimer won seven Oscars at the 96th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Christopher Nolan,...

Atomic Bomb vs Hydrogen Bomb: Differences & Oppenheimer's Development Choice Explained
Image
J. Robert Oppenheimer's played a pivotal role in the Manhattan Project and the creation of the atomic bomb. The hydrogen bomb, which was far more destructive than the atomic bomb, posed several ethical dilemmas for Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer opposed the hydrogen bomb despite building the atomic bomb, a change of heart that cost him his career.

The atomic bomb and the hydrogen bomb were two very different projects, and each project had a very different effect on both Oppenheimer and the man himself. Oppenheimer follows a few key moments in the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, a theoretical physicist who helped build the first atomic bomb. By the end of Oppenheimer, the movie had explored his role in the Manhattan Project, his time on the Atomic Energy Commission, and his guilt for helping develop a nuclear weapon. The timeline of Oppenheimer stopped short of one major event, though: the development of the hydrogen bomb.

Matt Damon’s Character Means More to 'Oppenheimer' Than You Think
Image
Oppenheimer is dominated by Cillian Murphy’s masterful performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer, with Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr. also doing outstanding work in the major roles of Oppenheimer’s wife, Kitty, and political rival, Lewis Strauss, respectively. But while the impressions left by these three loom largest, the film also features an extensive cast of supporting characters, without whom it would not be nearly as effective or comprehensive a story. The most crucial and fully developed of these secondary characters is General Leslie Groves, who is played in a vibrant and commanding manner by Matt Damon. Groves plays a central role in the plot and the against-type casting of Damon makes the character a dynamic and intriguing part of the film who exemplifies many of its main themes.

The Current Debate | Oscars 2024 and the Savior Syndrome
Image
The Current Debate is a column that connects the dots between great writing about a topic in the wider film conversation.Oppenheimer.“If there’s a sense of disconnect between what’s on stage and the outside world,” Alison Willmore writes of the 96th Academy Awards in Vulture, “Hollywood’s always declared itself the kingdom of dreams.” That might well be true, but the ceremony’s ostrichlike indifference toward some of the issues dominating global headlines this year felt especially jarring. While pro-Palestine protesters outside the theater blocked traffic and held signs with messaging like, “What good is art that ignores genocide,” only Jonathan Glazer, director of the Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest (all films 2023 unless otherwise noted), which was crowned Best International Film, dared to address the bloodshed in Gaza and Israel. Per Time’s Judy Berman, his speech, which connected the unspeakable atrocities of the past to the horrors of today,...

Oppenheimer Skips Over A Pivotal Japan Story That Could've Fixed The Movie's Bombing Debate
Image
Oppenheimer omitted J. Robert's first trip to Japan, which could have shown the aftermath of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. Not showing the actual bombings sparked debate, with arguments made on both sides. Including J. Robert's trip would have fit with the movie's purpose of telling the story through his perspective.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer covers the most important moments in J. Robert Oppenheimer’s (Cillian Murphy) involvement in the Manhattan Project and the development of the atomic bomb, but it skipped one important story that could’ve fixed the movie’s bombing debate. Oppenheimer marked a first in Christopher Nolan’s career as it was his first biographical movie, based on the book American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. Oppenheimer takes viewers back to World War II and briefly to a couple of years earlier to meet J. Robert Oppenheimer, a theoretical physicist and teacher.

Peter Bart: The Film Nerds And ‘Barbie’-Phobes Are Here, But That Won’t Stop A Big Oscar Bump
Image
Given the strong slate of this year’s Oscar nominees, the pre-Academy Awards season has been devoid of the intrigues and mud-slinging of previous epochs. Oops! – could a new outbreak of Barbie-phobia break the harmony and bring naysayers out of the shadows?

I already hear a few negative murmurs: Not only is Barbie suddenly “a bad movie,” but Leonardo DiCaprio should have played the FBI agent in Killers of the Flower Moon, as his director originally planned. And Oppenheimer was a brilliant movie but arguably could have focused on a different physicist.

While most of us are disposed to admire the Oscar Best Picture nominees, and may even vote accordingly, this is the moment when we always hear from grumpy film nerds. They led the wave of indignation in 1982 when Et was critiqued for lacking the cultural depth of Gandhi. Et made us smile, not yawn, it was later pointed out,...

Paul Newman Is the Standout in This Other Oppenheimer Movie
Image
This past summer's blockbuster biopic Oppenheimer was a triumph for director Christopher Nolan. His retelling of how the first atomic bomb came to be is filled with mind-blowing cinematography and terrifically acted scenes from a great ensemble cast including Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Jack Quaid, and Matt Damon. The photography has elements of our favorite Nolan films like The Dark Knight trilogy, Interstellar, Inception, and Memento. One thing it was not, however, is the first film to explore the Manhattan Project and the relationship between J. Robert Oppenheimer and General Leslie Groves.

Creative Fusion on an Extra-Large Scale: Jennifer Lame on Editing ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Postcard From Earth’
Image
Editor Jennifer Lame’s work has appeared on many of the world’s largest screens this year. Over the summer, her second movie with director Christopher Nolan, his historical epic Oppenheimer, for Universal, had moviegoers scrambling for tickets to Imax’s large-format theaters. And in October, the Lame-edited Postcard From Earth, from director Darren Aronofsky, became the first movie to debut at the newly opened Sphere in Las Vegas.

Speaking to the success of Nolan’s drama about the father of the atomic bomb, Lame says, “I really enjoy cutting people in rooms talking. When I first read the script, I was ripping through the pages. For me as an editor, I want to replicate that experience when I get the footage.” On the alternating use of color and black-and-white, she says that Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema created a palette where, generally, color images represent the perspective of...

How Many Affairs J. Robert Oppenheimer Had While Married To Kitty
Image
Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, portrays J. Robert Oppenheimer as a complex and controversial figure in American history. The film focuses on Oppenheimer's relationships and cheating scandals, particularly his affairs with Jean Tatlock and Ruth Tolman. Nolan's decision to prioritize the relationship with Jean likely stems from its tragic ending.

Oppenheimer tells the complex story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the "father of the atomic bomb," from his involvement in the Manhattan Project to his personal affairs. The 2023 epic biographical thriller film, directed and written by Christopher Nolan, does its best to be an accurate portrayal of the theoretical physicist and not paint him as this American hero, especially because he is viewed as a controversial figure in United States history and many have different opinions on him. Aside from his significant contributions to the making of nuclear weapons during World War II, the movie also showcases Oppenheimer's cheating scandals.

As depicted in Nolan's Oppenheimer,...

Matt Damon: The Art of Hiding in Plain Sight
Image
Oppenheimer.Much of the praise for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has highlighted the strength of its ensemble cast. Cillian Murphy has garnered considerable acclaim for his cold and haunted performance as the eponymous father of the atomic bomb, and so has Robert Downey Jr. as his vindictive foil, Admiral Lewis Strauss. Less has been said about Matt Damon’s supporting portrayal of one of the most pivotal figures in the J. Robert Oppenheimer story: Major General Leslie Groves, the American military man who oversaw the Manhattan Project, and hired Oppenheimer. Gruff, difficult to please, exacting in his military objectives, and occasionally comic, Damon plays him with the understated, reliably solid craft that’s defined his career. And in what has proven to be characteristic of Damon’s screen presence, he plays Groves as less conservative than he first appears: he’s a character who’s willing to gently undercut received...

Will ‘Air’ finally win Ben Affleck or Matt Damon that elusive Oscar for acting?
Image
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck won Best Original Screenplay together in 1998 for “Good Will Hunting,” which also earned Damon a Best Actor bid. Since then, they’ve had a separate Oscars history. Damon was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 2010 for “Invictus,” then reaped another Best Actor bid in 2016 for “The Martian.” And, in 2017, he scored a Best Picture nomination for “Manchester by the Sea.” Affleck, meanwhile, has scored only one other Oscar nomination since his “Good Will Hunting” writing win. That was for Best Picture for “Argo” in 2013. He did win that award, though. Neither has taken home an Oscar for acting but that could this year.

The duo reunited on-screen in “Air,” which tells the story of how Nike marketing executive Sonny Vaccaro (Damon) signed Michael Jordan and made the iconic shoe the Air Jordan. Affleck, who also directed this Amazon Prime Video release, plays Damon’s on-screen boss,...

Christopher Nolan Praises Cillian Murphy's Performance in Oppenheimer
Image
Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan lauds his lead star Cillian Murphy for his performance in his gripping blockbuster, hailing the emotional nuance he brought to the eponymous character in the film.

Speaking with Screen Rant, Nolan expressed his admiration for how Murphy immersed himself in Oppenheimer's central character, bringing elements of the script to life as well as his ability to bring "emotional truth" to the role. Having frequently collaborated with Murphy throughout his career, the result was nothing less than he expected.

Oppenheimer Is Christopher Nolan's Magnum Opus, Says Cillian Murphy

"You're looking at these people to come and bring an expert eye to the aspect of the film that they are solely responsible for. And what that means is you get incredible input from Cillian Murphy, having looked at the script, looked at the history, really thought deeply about the emotional truth of the journey of the character," he said.
