“Amelie” director Jean-Pierre Jeunet has assembled a high-profile international cast for his next film, “Violette,” based on Valérie Perrin’s literary sensation “Fresh Water for Flowers” (“Changer l’eau des fleurs”), which sold over 3 million copies worldwide.

Matthias Schoenaerts (“Rust and Bone”), Melvil Poupaud (“Jeanne du Barry”), Anouk Grinberg (“The Innocent”), Sergio Castellitto (“Conclave”) and Alban Lenoir (“Lost Bullet”) have joined the cast and will star opposite Cesar-winning French actor Leila Bekhti, who was previously announced.

“Violette” is produced by Carlo Degli Esposti and Nicola Serra at Palomar, and Thibault Gast and Matthias Weber at 24 25 Films. Both companies are owned by Mediawan. The production kicked off on May 5 for a 13-week shoot across Burgundy, the Paris region, and the South of France.

French prosecutors have requested an 18-month suspended jail sentence for French actor Gerard Depardieu,who is on trial for the sexual assault of two women during a 2021 film shoot.

A judge will now deliberate on the sentence request.

The lead prosecutor Laurent Guy also asked Depardieu be fined €20,000 and pay damages to the plaintiffs – an unnamed assistant director and a set dresser who worked with the actor on Jean Becker’s The Green Shutters (Les Volets Verts)that co-starred Anouk Grinberg and Fanny Ardant.

“What we have here are evidently sexual assaults with intent,” Guy told the court.

France’s #MeToo movement is back in the spotlight today (March 24) as actor Gerard Depardieu is expected at a Paris criminal court to face charges of sexual assault on a film set.

The now 76-year-old French actor is being tried for the sexual assault of two women – an assistant director and a set designer – during the 2021 film shoot for Jean Becker’s The Green Shutters (Les Volets Verts) released in 2022 that co-stars Anouk Grinberg and Fanny Ardant.

If he is found guilty, he could face five years in prison and a €75,000 fine. He is also facing other charges in separate cases.

Updated 2.45 am Pt: Gérard Depardieu arrived at a Paris court for his trial on sexual assault charges on Monday to feminist protests outside the building and a media scrum inside.

The trial will examine two separate accusations by a set decorator and an assistant director – referred to as Amélie and Sarah – who say they were sexually assaulted by Depardieu on the set of Jean Becker’s The Green Shutters in 2021.

Based on the eponymous 1950 novel by Georges Simenon, Depardieu stars in the film as a tyrannical, celebrated actor at the height of his powers, in the grip of a personal crisis.

The trial comes amid at least 20 public allegations of sexually inappropriate behavior against Depardieu, which he denies.

Gaumont has added French-language action feature The Orphans starring Dali Benssalah, Alban Lenoir, Anouk Grinberg and Sonia Faidi, to its Cannes slate.

The film is the first feature from Olivier Schneider who has worked as stunt coordinator on films including No Time To Die, Spectre, Taken and Fast and Furious X. It is about a cop and a mob fixer who team up to search for the killer of a former friend from their orphanage. Producers are Inoxy Films and Gaumont.

“Our ambition is to rehabilitate the French action movie and bring it back to cinemas,” said Alexis Cassanet, Gaumont’s head of international sales.

Fresh controversy is brewing in the French film industry just weeks after a bombshell documentary detailing sexual assault accusations against Gérard Depardieu divided its ranks.

In what promises to be another divisive affair, actress Judith Godrèche has publicly condemned the relationship she openly had with director Benoît Jacquot in the late 1980s, which she says began when she was only 14 years old and he was 40.

Godrèche said this week that she was “under his influence” and that the relationship was wrong.

Jacquot – whose films as director include 2015 drama Diary Of A Chambermaid, Farewell, My Queen and Casanova, Last Love – has always held that Godrèche was 15, the minimum age of consent in France.

French President Emmanuel Macron has come out in support of Gérard Depardieu whose star has fallen in France in recent days following the airing of a documentary investigating multiple allegations of sexual assault against the actor.

“One thing you’ll never see me get involved in is a witch hunt. I hate that,” Macron said in an interview with evening talk show C à Vous on Wednesday evening.

Questioned whether he thought the actor had brought shame on France, Macron replied that he was a “great admirer of Depardieu” and that he “had made France proud.”

Depardieu’s treatment of women on and off the set has been under public scrutiny following the airing of France 2 investigative show Complément d’Enquête on December 7.

The various elements of writer-director-star Louis Garrel’s low-key comic crime caper don’t sound that original at first glance. The audience-friendly plot involves a troubled thirtysomething, Abel (Garrel), lured by family connections into assisting with a heist in order to protect those he loves. In addition to this conscience-plagued hero, the cast of characters include Abel’s free-spirited mother (Anouk Grinberg), a reformed — or is he? — ex-con (Roschdy Zem), a manic-pixie dream girl-esque female lead (Noémie Merlant) and various shady underworld sorts mostly restricted to hiding in the shadows. But this film is a slightly slipperier customer than a topline summary would suggest, with tonal shifts that shouldn’t work, but somehow do. Fans of the likes of Maren Ade’s 2016 comedy-drama Toni Erdmann or Alex van Warmerdam’s 2013 psychological thriller Borgman may recognize a kindred sensibility.

Eternally the rebellious loverboy of the Sarkozy era, Louis Garrel, now at 40, is seemingly easing into an elder statesman role. No longer too brooding a presence, and also at the point where paranoia about losing roles to younger, newer stars might necessitate a pivot to directing, the French idol has made his transition agreeable with a couple of likable pictures under this belt.

The Innocent, certainly packing a lot at only 98 minutes, is the kind of film one can imagine being pushed to vintage Desplechin maximalism, with every tonal shift, piece of character backstory, and formal trick emphasized even further. But aiming for a familiar, if dependable narrative––albeit one that still involves romantic misunderstandings, botched caviar heists, even scuba diving––it more points to the promise of a great film coming one day. Exclusive: Janus Films has acquired North American rights for Louis Garrel’s The Innocent in which he also stars alongside Roschdy Zem, Anouk Grinberg and Noémie Merlant.

The film, which world premiered at Cannes Film Festival last May, is a frontrunner in France’s upcoming César Awards (February 24) with 11 nominations, including for best film and best director.

The comedy will make its U.S. premiere at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in New York in March and Garrel is scheduled to attend.

Janus Films plans a theatrical release on March 17, followed by a Criterion Channel streaming premiere.

Garrel directs and co-stars in The Innocent as Abel, a suspicious, young man who tries to derail his mother’s new relationship with recently released convict Michel, played by Roschdy Zem.

Tár supporting actress Merlant plays Abel’s friend and accomplice who joins him on the mission to discredit Michel. Grinberg plays Abel’s mother.

’Rise’ and ’Pacifiction’ are also strong contenders.

In 2017, when the Cannes Film Festival celebrated its 70th anniversary, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” was a box-office smash, “Moonlight” won Best Picture, and Will Smith was a giddy member of the festival jury, watching everything from “Good Time” to “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.” Salma Hayek, host of the dinner party for that evening, hired a surprise mariachi band to storm the event as the Three Amigos goaded the room into one boisterous song after another.

Those were more innocent times. The festival’s 75th-anniversary ceremony and subsequent dinner took place two years after the festival’s Covid-era cancellation and the obliteration of theaters around the world. Hopes remain that “Top Gun: Maverick” can reignite moviegoing enthusiasm a week after its boisterous Cannes premiere, but within the celebratory atmosphere many actors and filmmakers expressed uncertainty about how much stability remained for their work.

This time, there were no mariachi bands.

To celebrate its 75th anniversary, the Cannes Film Festival gathered dozens upon dozens of previous laureates and special guests at the Palais des Festival this evening. Inside the Lumière Theatre, the fest’s artistic chief and general delegate, Thierry Frémaux, and outgoing Cannes President, Pierre Lescure, did a roll call of star actors and directors who left their seats and made their way to the stage .

The group included such filmmakers and talent as Guillermo del Toro, Michel Hazanavicius, Paolo Sorrentino, Isabelle Huppert, Mads Mikkelsen, Diane Kruger, Nicolas Winding Refn, Ethan Coen, David Cronenberg, Viggo Mortensen, Daniel Bruhl, the Dardenne brothers, Claude Lelouch, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Jake Gyllenhaal. and many, many more.

The Cannes Film Festival has added a string of new titles to its Official Selection, including three movies in competition: Léonor Serraille’s “Un Petit Frere,” Albert Serra’s “Tourment sur les iles” and “Le Otto Montagne” by Charlotte Vandermeersch and Felix Van Groeninge.

Other movies that have been added to the lineup include Serge Bozon’s “Don Juan” and Emmanuel Mouret’s “Chronique d’une liaison passagère,” which have been added to Cannes Premiere, a new section launched last year; while actor-director Louis Garrel’s “L’innocent,” a drama starring Garrel, Anouk Grinberg and Noémie Merlant, will play out of competition.

“Don Juan” is a musical romantic comedy with Tahar Rahim and Virginie Efira, who will also be at Cannes to emcee the opening and closing ceremonies.

“Chronique d’une liaison passagere” is also a romantic comedy-drama revolving around an adulterous relationship, starring Sandrine Kiberlain and Vincent Macaigne.

Wild Bunch International (Wbi) has unveiled an eclectic French-language slate for 2022 featuring new films from Louis Garrel, Kim Chapiron, Alice Diop, Léa Mysius and Rebecca Zlotowski as well as directorial duo Benoît Delépine and Gustave Kervern.

The company is launching sales on the new French titles at the Unifrance Rendez-vous with French Cinema, which is scheduled to run as an in-person event in Paris from January 11 to 17.

Arnaud Desplechin returns to the Cannes Film Festival with Deception (Tromperie), a self-indulgent Philip Roth adaptation that’s only marginally better than 2017’s derided Ismael’s Ghosts. One of the late Roth’s most openly personal novels, it details a string of affairs conducted by Jewish-American writer “Philip,” here played by French actor Denis Podalydes, speaking French. In clearly delineated chapters, he ruminates on a long-term affair with an English actress (Léa Seydoux). Known as The English Lover, she also speaks French. We’ve seen enough films where German characters speak with heavily-accented English, for example, so this choice feels excusable. But it does undermine the script’s many references to cultural identity. Perhaps it’s meant to play with them, but as the chapters wear on and more lovers are revealed, this begins to feel more and more like a French film made by Woody Allen, and not in a good way.

In normal times it should be fairly easy to separate the content of a certain piece from the circumstances of its creation, but we haven’t exactly been living in normal times of late, have we?

And so it wouldn’t feel right to describe Arnaud Desplechin’s “Deception,” his Philip Roth adaptation that screened on Tuesday as part of Cannes’ new Cannes Premiere sidebar, as “airless” without mentioning that the film was made during France’s long national lockdown last year.

The French director had long dreamed of adapting Roth’s slim 1990 novel, but never thought realizing those dreams was entirely likely – the text, after all, was nothing but snippets of dialogue with little more by way of organizing structures than periods and commas.

Covid restrictions thus proved rather fortuitous for a film shot entirely in a studio. Save for one scene, it never featured more than two actors in the frame,...

Casablanca Beats is first Moroccan film to play in Cannes Competition since 1962.

Wild Bunch International (Wbi) has boarded sales on French-Moroccan filmmaker Nabil Ayouch’s Casablanca Beats ahead of its world premiere in Competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in July.

The film follows a group of youngsters living in the Casablanca slum district of Sidi Moumen as they participate in a workshop encouraging them to express themselves through hip-hop music and dance.

It was shot in Casablanca’s Les Etoiles de Sidi Moumen (The Stars of Sidi Moumen) cultural centre, which Ayouch created in 2014 with novelist Mahi Binebine.

Line-up features films by Arnaud Desplechin, Claire Denis, Quentin Dupieux and Julia Ducournau.

As per company tradition, the Paris-based sales powerhouse has unveiled most of its French line-up for the coming year ahead of the annual event.

The Rendez-vous is taking place online from January 13-15 due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Denis, Desplechin and Dupieux’s new productions were all conceived against the backdrop of the Covid-19 lockdowns and political upheavals of last year.
