We may remember Independence Day, The Matrix, The Phantom Menace. But what about these forgotten 90s sci-fi films? And are any worth seeing?
Think back to the science fiction cinema of the 1990s, and some of the decade's biggest box-office hits will immediately spring to mind: The Phantom Menace, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Men In Black, Armageddon and Terminator 2 were all in the top 20 most lucrative films of the era.
But what about the sci-fi films of the 1990s that failed to make even close to the same cultural and financial impact of those big hitters? These are the films this list is devoted to - the flops, the straight-to-video releases, the low-budget and critically-derided. We've picked 50 live-action films that fit these criteria, and dug them up to see whether they're still worth watching in the 21st century.

Updated With Full List Of Scripts, Writers, And Reps: Catherine The Great, about the rise and life of the famous (sometimes notorious) 18th-Century Russian monarch, was the top vote-getter among 70 scripts chosen for the 2014 Black List of the year’s best un-produced scripts. The screenplay, by Los Angeles writer and producer Kristina Lauren Anderson, was announced as part of an hour-plus process on Twitter and YouTube this morning.
Each of the 70 screenplays on this 10th annual list was chosen by a group of 250 development executives, agents and other Hollywood insiders as among the year’s best un-produced scripts in a process overseen by Franklin Leonard of http://www.blcklst.com. Anderson’s screenplay received 51 votes.
Other notables in the list include writer/actor/director Kenneth Lonergan with Manchester-By-The-Sea, which is being produced by Matt Damon and Chris Moore. Randall Green had two scripts make the list, The Swimsuit Issue and Cartoon Girl.

In 2007, I Am Legend, which starred Will Smith ("Six Degrees of Separation") as 'Dr. Robert Neville', earned Warner Bros. $586 million at the worldwide box office. Then in 2012, Warner Bros. decided that they wanted a follow-up and hired Grace of Monaco screenwriter Arash Amel to pen a prequel, that would've featured Will Smith's 'Neville' just before the outbreak. That attempted failed to get a greenlight from WB, and it was scrapped. Fast forward to this past April, Warner Bros. purchased a the spec script A Garden At The End Of The World that was written by an unknown screenwriter, Gary Graham. The script has been described as a "sci-fi version of John Wayne’s The Searchers." WB noticed that Graham's script could work as a follow-up to I Am Legend with some tweaking and here and there. WB then approached the original I Am Legend producers Akiva Goldsman, James Lassiter...

After "I Am Legend" hit theaters and grossed almost $600 million, Will Smith started talking about returning for a prequel, teasing that his dog would return as well, but as a puppy. Soon after, Smith was officially in negotiations, but then dropped out because he didn't like the script and decided he doesn't want to make prequels or sequels. Now comes word that Warner Bros is moving forward with a reboot and isn't planning to bring Smith back. The studio is reworking a script by Gary Graham, called "A Garden at the End of the World," that was nothing to do with "I Am Legend," but contains enough similarities. Original "I Am Legend" producer Akiva Goldsman is on board. Back in February, Goldsman revealed several prequel ideas that didn't work out. "We had a really interesting prequel, which was the first outbreak of the virus, during a Thanksgiving Day parade, which was awesome,...

(Cbr) Warner Bros. is going back to the post-apocalyptic well with another adaptation of Richard Matheson’s "I Am Legend" film. This one won’t feature Will Smith, who starred in the 2007 film, and sounds as if it won’t have much in common with the source material. According to Deadline, the studio asked Gary Graham to repurpose his script "A Garden at the End of the World" into a reboot. The original screenplay, which garnered a lot of attention on the Black List website, was described as a sci-fi version of "The Searchers," the 1956 John Ford classic in which John Wayne combs the West for the Comanches niece kidnapped his nieces and killed the rest of the family. This will mark the fourth time Matheson’s 1954 novel has been adapted for film. Vincent Price starred in the 1964 film "The Last Man on Earth," Charlton Heston played the lead in...

It turns out that Warner Bros has Apple to thank for the fact that their long-touted addition to the I Am Legend franchise has now been greenlit - at least in a vague indirect way. That's because Gary Graham, who has written the screenplay for the upcoming last-man-on-earth reboot, was working at one of the company.s store when he wrote and then uploaded his script to the Black List website, probably using one of those very same Apple products. Because Will Smith isn.t fond of doing sequels, Warner Bros. has struggled for years in their pursuit to get I Am Legend back onto the big screen. Where they eventually found the solution was in the shape of A Garden At The End Of The World - Gary Graham's aforementioned screenplay. The studio bought the script back in April, even though just weeks before the writer had been...

It was only a matter of time before Warner Bros figured out a way to relaunch I Am Legend as a franchise. The studio has been itching to do something with the property ever since the 2007 film raked in $586 million worldwide. They've attempted to get sequels off the ground, and even prequels- which would bring Will Smith back as Robert Neville. Nothing came of those previous attempts, and Smith's reluctance to return likely aided that.
Now the Warners may have found the answer...with a script that's not even based on that film or the 1954 book it was adapted from. Earlier this year, they bought a script by unknown writer Gary Graham. At the time, he was working as a sales associate at the Apple Store in midtown Manhattan. Warner Bros has spent the better part of a decade working on getting another I Am Legend off the ground. They’ve tried it all, the “see the origins of the zombie outbreak” prequel, the “screw it, let’s just clone Will Smith and do another one” sequel, everything. There were even zombie elephants involved at one point. But these options required the return of Smith as Robert Neville, and Smith has never been particularly keen on returning to the property (maybe it was the zombie elephants that turned him off). Now, only one option remains: Warners is slamming its fist down on the flashing red “reboot” button, obliterating the old I Am Legend and redoing the film from the ground up. Deadline reports the studio is using A Garden at the End of the World, a spec script from Gary Graham (an Apple Store employee turned screenwriter) as the foundation of a new I Am Legend. Warners...

Warner Bros. has been trying to figure out a way to get a sequel for I Am Legend off the ground for years. Well, they've finally given up on that sequel and they are looking to just reboot the damn thing.
The news comes from Deadline, who says that the franchise reboot will not include Will Smith. The actor doesn't seem very interested in doing any sequels these days anyway. He's been dodging that Independence Day sequel for years.
The studio is basically taking an already existing spec script that they acquired earlier this year called A Garden At The End Of The World, and changing it up to fit the I Am Legend story. The script was written by Gary Graham, who worked at the Apple store in midtown Manhattan before his script was picked up.
The original script is described as "a sci-fi version of John Wayne’s The Searchers.

Will Smith was undoubtedly one of the best things about I Am Legend, the post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller that followed the lone New York City survivor (Smith) in search of a cure for the plague that has killed off most of humanity. As such, hearing that a reboot of the Warner Bros. property is now in the works without Smith at its center makes my response to the news a bit muted, though it probably would have been anyways even with him involved now that we're seven years removed from the film and the post-apocalyptic movies keep on rolling in. Directed by Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games), the 2007 film grossed $585 million worldwide, making a franchise desirable. But the movie's ending wasn't exactly sequel-friendly, which I appreciate to an extent, and, despite a long-standing attempt at a prequel, a franchise never got off the ground. At least not until now, as Warner Bros....

Inevitable because Will Smith only does Men In Black and Bad Boys sequels (he said no to Independence Day 2). Warner Bros. has wanted to make another I Am Legend movie for a long time but Smith has never been too excited about it. So what do you do? Reboot it!

Earning $585 million worldwide seven years ago, Warner Bros. really tried hard to get a sequel to "I Am Legend" off the ground. But while there might have been excitement at the studio level, there was a constant roadblock in the always picky Will Smith. "Producers are working on it. I’m not actually. If it’s great, I’m into it,” the actor said a couple of years ago, adding: “I don’t want to be the sequel guy. I figure I’ve got about six or seven more years where I can run and jump a little bit and then I’m going butt and gut for the rest of my career. Butt and gut.” And so, WB has decided to give up on Smith and start over. Deadline reports that they are reworking "A Garden At Then Of The World," a spec script they picked up in April,...

Warner Bros is planning an I Am Legend reboot.
With Will Smith reluctant to film a sequel, the studio is planning a new adaptation of Richard Matheson's much-adapted horror novel.
Gary Graham's A Garden at the End of the World script is being retrofitted to the I Am Legend world, according to Deadline.
The screenplay has been described as "a sci-fi version of John Wayne's The Searchers".
When Warner Bros noticed the similarities to I Am Legend's themes and mythology, they decided to attempt a redraft.
I Am Legend producers Akiva Goldsman, James Lassiter and Joby Harold will be returning for the project.
Four films have been adapted from Matheson's 1954 novel, which centres around the lone survivor in a world overrun with creatures resembling vampires.

Since then, Warner Bros has been dabbled with how to make a sequel to the film which, er, isn't narratively the easiest thing to do given what happens in the first movie. In the years since 2007’s post-apocalyptic thriller I Am Legend, Warner Bros. has been trying to find a way to fashion a franchise from the film. They have, over the years, considered a potential prequel and then a seemingly impossible sequel. Now, though, it appears the studio is ready to abandon finding a way for Will Smith to return and has come up with a plan to craft a reboot.According to Deadline, Warners has retrieved Gary Graham’s spec script A Garden At The End Of The World from storage, where it has been sitting since the company bought it in April. Graham, an Apple store worker-turned-scriptwriter, concocted what was at the time described as a science fiction take on The Searchers, but that apparently contains enough similarities to Richard Matheson’s original Legend story that the studio has now engaged him to re-work it. Star Trek is pretty much unique when it comes to fan-made movies and episodes that pay homage to the sci-fi series. Left alone by CBS and Paramount (as long as they don’t try to make money from them) fans build elaborate sets and even bring in recognisable Star Trek actors to produce work that is anything but amateur.
The latest hoping to go into production is Star Trek: Renegades, co-written by Jack Trevino and staring Walter Koenig, Tim Russ, Garrett Wang and Robert Picardo among others, names that will be familiar to any Star Trek fan.
Jack Trevino is no stranger to the world of Star Trek. Having written the hugely popular fan-made miniseries Star Trek: Of Gods And Men which stared a number of Star Trek actors including Walter Koenig and Nichelle Nichols. The series was awarded ‘Best Web Production 2008’ by SyFy Portal which is now Alpha Airlock.

I'm a huge fan of animation, animated films are getting better and better. Not only is the look and animation getting ridiculously awesome, but I find that many of these animated films actually have incredibly good stories. Not all of them are good though, for example, Cars 2 and Rio sucked. It will be interesting to see who ends up taking home the awards this year. Out of the movies on the list that I've seen and liked we have Puss in Boots, Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2. I guess it's no surprises that Kung Fu Panda 2 is leading the nominations with 9. I don't put much stock in the Annie Awards and neither does Disney after withdrawing from the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood back in 2010. I have personally never found them to be a good judge of quality and as such don't pay them any particular attention, though I will pass along the information as they have announced their 2011 nominees with Dreamworks' Kung Fu Panda 2 leading the way with 12 nominations, followed by Puss in Boots and Rango each with nine. Of course, while Disney has withdrawn from the Annies that doesn't mean they aren't considered for the awards as Cars 2, Gnomeo and Juliet and Winnie the Pooh are among the nominees. Last year How to Train Your Dragon reigned supreme over Toy Story 3 and I wouldn't be surprised to see Kung Fu Panda 2 take home plenty of hardware, following in the footsteps of its predecessor, which beat out...

She may not know it, but designers are totally knocking off K-Stew’s look from The Runaways!
Kristen Stewart, 20, is officially a fashion muse! Yesterday in New York City, designer Gary Graham presented a collection that was clearly inspired by Kristen’s Joan Jett look in The Runaways! The models wore jet-black wigs hacked into mullet haircuts, safety-pin necklaces, vintage tees and Converse Chucks for a punk, cool-street-girl look—just like Kristen!
“Todd Oldham wrote a book about Joan Jett,” said the designer at his presentation. “It was about making your own things and learning how to take things and change them.” Just like Kristen’s punked-out look in The Runaways! And from the looks of some of the candid shots we’ve seen of Kristen, this look seems pretty close to her personal style, too! We love it! So was this designer capitalizing on this hot actress’s heat by stealing her style?...

Episode 3 of the popular webseries.
Web series Universal Dead recently announced that it is becoming a feature film, and has just released another installment. In episode 3, Doug Jones (Hellboy) explores the zombie problem that he and Cdc representative Gary Graham disagree on. Episode 3 asks the unanswered question, "Do zombies shit?" It also raises a correlation between zombies and other members of the undead. (we highly recommend watching Episode 1 and Episode 2 before watching Episode 3.
The popular webseries is written by Kelly Parks and directed by Vernon Mortenson. And yes, that was D.B. Sweeney.

Web series Universal Dead has released episode 2, and finally starts to get to the root of the problem: the argument between whether the zombies are "undead" or "infected."
Web series Universal Dead has released episode 2, and finally starts to get to the root of the problem: the argument between whether the zombies are "undead" or "infected."
Episode 1 showed Gary Graham as a Cdc representative and a team of Navy SEALs heading to a compound in a landscape filled with the undead, though Graham claims that the "zombies" are the product of a disease and are not undead. Enter Doug Jones (Hellboy) in Episode 2 as a looney tunes scientist who believes the contrary, and wants to prove that the zombies has some theory about the undead that he wants to show Graham. The Cdc's claim that the undead are merely infected seems a logical and realistic approach to a government's response,...

Longtime FEARnet fans know that we make no attempt to hide our love for Doug Jones here. The versatile actor has popped up in all sorts of cool genre projects in recent years (from Pan's Labyrinth to Angel of Death to our own Jobs of the Damned, pictured above). And, having interviewed him numerous times, I can attest that he's pretty much the nicest guy in Hollywood. Doug's latest role is in Universal Dead, a new online series about a zombie-infested world, in which humanity's only hope lies with a lone scientist, and the military team (played by real-life Navy Seal's) assigned to protect him. Doug's not in the first episode (though his co-stars D.B. Sweeney and Gary Graham are), but...

Get some Navy SEALs together and what do they want to do? Make a webseries about the living dead starring D.B. Sweeney, Gary Graham, and Doug Jones and put together by producer/director Vernon Mortensen and producer/writer Kelly Parks.
The first episode looks capably shot, but very much like a SyFy channel movie (seriously, who approved that new spelling, SyFy?), which is a good thing or a bad thing depending on your love of SyFy original movies. I'd say that after one episode, it's worth at least seeing what will come next. Check out the synopsis and first episode below.

Nope, it’s not another installment in the Universal Monsters reboot, but a new online series that will debut “around March 15th,” according to screenwriter Kelly Parks, whom I “spoke” to via Facebook last night. The trailer looks pretty impressive for a low-budget effort, and the cast is impressive, too: Gary Graham, D.B. Sweeney... “We were very lucky to get Doug Jones,” Parks told me. (You remember Jones as Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies.) The series will eventually be available in a more traditional format, says Parks:...

Jason 'Jace' Hall is an avid gamer, well known in gaming circles, at one point heading up production of a number of Warner Bros. video game titles like The Matrix Online, F.E.A.R., Condemned: Criminal Origins, 300: March to Glory and Justice League Heroes. After shifting gears into producing for TV and the web, Hall founded HDFilms in 2007, and with it bowing his own hosted web series, The Jace Hall Show. Originally the series found a home on Sony's Crackle, which netted a reported 8 million views for the upstart network through its two season run. Now, heading into its third season, The Jace Hall Show has inked an exclusive distribution deal with gaming-heavy content site IGN. The new six-week season—see the trailer above—will debut January 29th. IGN is a natural fit for the gaming focused series, and with its not-to-shabby 25 million monthly visitors (global), there's a...
