This year’s Grammy week will be looking a little different, as the show will take place shortly after Los Angeles was devastated by wildfires in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena. Music’s biggest night will mark the first awards show to take place in L.A. since the tragedy began on Jan. 7, and many of the typical Grammy events have been canceled as the usual players — including Spotify and the major labels — redirect resources to aid wildfire relief efforts.

However, a handful of events will carry on with a charitable component, including the starry Clive Davis party and MusiCares tribute concert. Check out this year’s still-on Grammys celebrations below.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that its Board of Governors voted to present Academy Honorary Awards to Quincy Jones and Juliet Taylor, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to Richard Curtis and the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. The Oscar® statuettes will be presented at the Academy’s Governors Awards event on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood.

“The recipients of this year’s Governors Awards have set the bar incredibly high across their remarkable careers, and the Academy’s Board of Governors is thrilled to recognize them with Oscars,” said Academy President Janet Yang. “The selection of Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli is a testament to their success as producers of the fan-favorite Bond series and their contribution to the industry’s theatrical landscape.

John Waters was delighted that he’s “closer to the gutter than ever” as his name was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday.

In his acceptance speech, Waters said that the Walk of Fame was the first landmark he saw when he got to Los Angeles.

“After driving across the country with David Locke, I got out of my vehicle in 1970 at Hollywood and Vine, darted across the street and got a jaywalking ticket,” he recalled. “The first one — and I never looked back.”

Waters’ star is located outside of the Larry Edmunds Bookshop on Hollywood Blvd. and N. Cherokee Ave. Waters said bookstore, which specializes in literature about film and showbiz history, is his favorite spot on the famous street.

The Pope of Trash is about to be the Trash of Tinseltown, as John Waters is slated to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The 77-year-old John Waters will receive his star – designated as the 2,763rd – on September 18th as he is surrounded by frequent collaborators Ricki Lake, Mink Stole and Greg Gorman. As part of Waters’ Dreamlanders troupe, Lake has appeared in five films for Waters, most notably Hairspray, while Stole has appeared in every single one, beginning with 1969’s Mondo Trasho. Meanwhile, Gorman has photographed Waters numerous times, capturing some famous images of the director’s trademark pencil mustache.

Project Angel Food’s AngelPhoto auction this year will include a portrait of the late Chadwick Boseman.

The photo, shot by Kwaku Alston at Comic Con in 2017 before the release of “Black Panther,” opens at 1,000, but is expected to fetch about 5,000.

The fine art photography auction will be held at Milk Studios Los Angeles on Dec. 8. All proceeds benefit Project Angel Food’s work providing daily medically tailored meals to more than 2,500 Angelenos living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening illnesses.

Other auction highlights include a photo of Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe taken by Norman Seeff in New York City in 1969 and Greg Gorman’s 1994 portrait of Sophia Loren for Detour magazine that coincided with the release of Robert Altman’s “Prêt-à-Porter.”

The hyperlocal Spectrum News 1 leads the way with 23 nominations for the 74th annual Los Angeles Area Emmys, which the Television Academy announced today. Kcet is next with 15, followed by ABC7 (14) and Kttv (11).

The hardware will be handed out during a ceremony on Saturday, July 23, at the Academy’s campus in L.A.’s NoHo Arts District.

The Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards honor locally produced programs in the categories of Crime and Social Issues, Culture and History, the Arts, Human Interest, Sports, the Environment, and Live and Breaking News Coverage. This is the first year that Spectrum News 1, which launched in 2018, has scored the most L.A. Area Emmy noms. David Bowie‘s mid-Eighties career will be explored in the new box set Loving the Alien (1983-1988), a massive collection that gathers the late icon’s albums, live LPs and more from the era.

The 11-cd or 15-lp Loving the Alien, due out October 12th, features three Bowie studio albums – 1983’s Let’s Dance, 1984’s Tonight and 1987’s Never Let Me Down – alongside a pair of first-time-on-vinyl live albums – Serious Moonlight (Live ’83) and Glass Spider (Live Montreal ’87) – and the newly assembled compilation Dance, which collects 12 contemporaneous remixes from the era.

Germán Tejeira’s A Moonless Night (Una Noche Sin Luna) has won the International Feature Film Golden Eye award at the 10th Zurich Film Festival (Sept 25 - Oct 5).

The drama centres on three lonely lives in rural Uruguay.

The International Documentary Film Golden Eye was won by Alexander Nanau’s Romanian film, Toto and His Sisters, about a 10-year-old and his two teenage sisters who learn to survive while waiting for their mother’s release.

Both awards come with a cash prize of more than $30,000 (CHF25,000) and (CHF100,000) for Swiss promotion.

The Golden Eye in the Focus: Switzerland, Germany, Austria section was won Bruno Deville’s Swiss comedy, Boucoule.

The prize include Chf 20’000 ($20,0007) cash prize. Each winner also receives Chf 100’000 ($10,700) for the promotion of their film in Swiss cinemas.

Indian documentary filmmaker Nishtha Jain is part of the International documentary competition jury at the 10th Zurich Film Festival that runs from September 25- October 5, 2014.

The Jury will be headed by American documentary filmmaker Steve James, and comprises English documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield and American photographer Greg Gorman besides Jain.

From her critically acclaimed City of Photos (2004) to her recent multi-award winning Gulabi Gang (2012), Nishtha Jain has been telling stories which explore complexities of social hierarchies and the middle-classes’ sense of entitlement and privilege. She has won numerous international awards for her films, which together have been screened in over 250 international film festivals. Jain is an alumna of the Jamia Mass Communication Research Centre, New Delhi and the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. She currently lives and works in Mumbai.

Zurich Film Festival will also showcase a package of 12 Indian features and six shorts under its “New World View” section.

International and documentary competitions include The Skeleton Twins, ‘71 and The Look of Silence. A total of 17 world premieres secured for the festival, which has received a budget boost.

The 10th Zurich Film Festival (Sept 25 – Oct 5) has revealed its full line-up, which comprises 145 features – up from 122 last year – from 29 countries.

Co-director Nadja Schildknecht revealed a rise in budget for the festival as well as growth in anticipated guest numbers.

“This year, we expect some 500 guests (previous year 450) from around the world to accompany their films,” she said.

“And the budget has increased accordingly to CHF6.9m ($7.4m) (previous year CHF6.1m/$6.5m).”

As previously announced, Tate Taylor’s James Brown biopic Get On Up will open the festival on Sept 25. The closing film has yet to be revealed.

Oscar-winning director Susanne Bier is to preside over the international feature film jury at the 10th Zurich Film Festival (Sept 25 - Oct 5).

The Danish filmmaker, who won her Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar for In A Better World in 2011, is currently on the festival circuit with A Second Chance and Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper drama Serena.

She will oversee a jury that includes Us actor Val Kilmer, best known for roles in Heat, Batman Forever and Top Gun, and Bosnian director Jasmila Žbanić, who won the Berlin Golden Bear in 2006 with Grbavica.

Also on the jury is Marie Masmonteil, the French producer of Party Girl, which picked up prizes at Cannes in May, and Jerusalem Film Festival winner Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem, currently playing...

In order to examine the art of photography, you have to start by looking at the glass. “It’s the heart of the camera,” explains one lens-maker in director Michael Apted’s (The Up Series) latest documentary Bending the Light.

Apted’s film gives audiences a rare glimpse inside a premier Japanese lens factory and features interviews with celebrated photographers and cinematographers like Stephen Goldblatt, Greg Gorman, Richard Barnes, and Laura El-Tantawy in his study of the relationship between the artist and their tools.

David Alanson In his first major film role, David Alanson had to provide the comic relief, run for his life from a hungry horde of vampires, seduce a bi curious straight man and be half of a bickering gay couple in the horror comedy Bite Marks. Not exactly an easy role even for an experienced veteran actor, because the role requires so much of its actor. However, David Alanson managed to make it all appear rather effortless when this role had great potential to come across as forced. He brought an overall likability to his performance when the character had the potential to be unappealing. He managed to not only put his own stamp on the role, but to hold his own weight against gay character actor Windham Beacham. Right off the bat, with just one major film to date, David Alanson is showing promise. The question is, will he live up to that promise?...

Somebody at this site -- and who he is shall remain nameless, but he's often referred to as "Dqm" and spoken of in hushed tones -- said that up-and-coming actor alex Pettyfer was beastly looking.  As usual, said person was wrong. 

 

Pettyfer is set to star in the upcoming modernization of the "Beauty and the Beast" story called Beastly, based on the popular Young Adult novel. Before that, though, he's been the "muse" of gay photographer Greg Gorman, world famous for his photographs of Hollywood celebrities.

All films buffs have guilty pleasures. You know, those movies that high-minded cineastes love to turn their noses up at, especially critics for The New York Times, people with MFAs in some sort of film-related field, or just plain snobs who refuse to acknowledge anything released on celluloid that doesn’t have English subtitles and at least one reference to death, either as a character or a metaphor (and oftentimes both). Patrick Swayze was the undisputed King of the Guilty Pleasure. Walking into the white abyss of the Gagosian art gallery Saturday, April 11th, for the opening of an exhibit by eccentric Balitmore film director John Waters, I was nearly mauled by a throng of his flamboyant admirers, dressed like extras from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Among the more conventionally attired were Randal Kleiser, Ricki Lake, Johnny Knoxville, Traci Lords, Jeremy Renner, Vincent and Shelly Fremont, Brett Reichman, Joe Dallesandro, Ed and Dan Ruscha, Kat Kramer, Mike Kelly, Patrick Painter and Greg Gorman. Waters’s latest collection, consisting of playfully displayed images and sculptures, is titled “Rear Projection,” a typically bawdy Watersian pun on the outdated filmmaking process wherein a foreground action is superimposed on a pre-filmed scene. RuPaul was so inspired by the theme of his Logo series, "RuPaul's Drag Race," that he just released Champion, his fifth album, which is now available for download on iTunes. "It is about being a champion, overcoming obstacles, having courage and winning," RuPaul, who wrote the songs, tells Et. "Even if you don't win first place, you can win just by going for it." "RuPaul's Drag Race" has four more episodes until it picks the next performer to fill RuPaul's high heels, and its host believes the winner will be America's next drag superstar. "Listen, the whole world loves drag, whether they admit it or not," he says. "We live in this culture where we have this hypocritical thing. On one hand, people are ashamed of drag and they think it is misogynistic; on the other hand, we all love it because it's sparkly, it's shiny and it's gorgeous.

As I previously posted, the 'Dear John' crew was seen shooting at the Lafarge cement and sand plants with tons of military trucks in Harleyville, South Carolina on Monday, December 15, 2008.
