Charles Edward Fleming

First black playwright to win the Pulitzer Prize

Won the 1970 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the play "No Place to be Somebody".

His parents were William and Camille Fleming. His mother later married William L. Gordon, and Charles adopted his stepfather's surname. He added the "e" to "Gordon" when he found that another Charles Gordon was already registered with Actors Equity (the stage actors union) in New York.

In 1962 he co-founded the Committee for the Employment of Negro Performers with Godfrey Cambridge and Hugh Hurd.
