Fresh off six Emmy wins for Netflix’s “Baby Reinder,” the limited series’ creator, executive producer, writer and star Richard Gadd is expanding his relationship with the streamer with a multi-year scripted series first-look deal.
“I’m beyond thrilled to be continuing my creative journey with Netflix. They took a chance on me when I wasn’t proven in the television space for that I will always be grateful,” Gadd said in a statement. “I look forward to the years ahead with Netflix ideas with Ted, Bela, Anne, Peter and all the amazing staff who work at the company.”
News of the expanded partnership was revealed by Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos during The Royal Television Society (Rts) London Convention.

Exclusive: Richard Gadd, who won three Emmys on Sunday for his hugely popular Netflix limited series Baby Reindeer, has signed a multi-year first-look deal with the global streamer for scripted series. Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos is expected to announce the pact today at The Royal Television Society London Convention.
While it’s been unveiled on the heels of Baby Reindeer’s standout performance at the Emmys where it dominated the longform field with six wins, including Outstanding Limited Series, I hear the two sides agreed to the deal last month, after the show had landed 11 Emmy nominations.
Netflix is a logical partner for Gadd following their collaboration on Baby Reindeer which became a global phenomenon, spending 8 weeks in Netflix’s Top 10 for English-language TV programs and amassing 88.4M views in its first 91 days of release to briefly make Netflix’s Top 10 most popular series list.

Netflix’s Baby Reindeer took home the most awards at last night’s Emmys in the limited or anthology series category, including best show, best actor for creator and writer Richard Gadd, best supporting actress for his co-star Jessica Gunning and best writing in the genre. Those who missed last night’s ceremony — which included heartfelt speeches by Gadd and Gunning — can stream the 76th annual Emmy Awards on demand on Hulu.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards just aired on ABC, and things went about as expected. In other words, the excellent historical drama Shōgun won Best Drama Series; the caustic slice-of-life series The Bear won Best Comedy Series, since I guess it's a little more like a comedy than Shōgun; and the autobiographical stalker drama Baby Reindeer won Best Limited or Anthology Series.
Those three were the big winners of the night, with them each taking home four awards. Jeremy Allen White won Best Actor In A Comedy Series as expected, and his costar Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Best Supporting Actor. On the drama side, Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor and Anna Sawai won Best Actress; she was the one I was really invested in. She was magnificent as Mariko and if she hadn't won I would have been forced to write a strongly worded letter to whoever votes in these things.

Only eight months after the last Emmy ceremony (which was delayed due to the strikes), the Primetime Emmy Awards are back, although there were some big surprises in store. Everyone (myself included) expected The Bear to own every category it was nominated in. While it did well, winning many big categories including Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress, it lost Best Comedy Series (and actress) to Hacks.
Netflix’s controversial limited series Baby Reindeer also cleaned up, nabbing awards for star and creator Richard Gadd plus co-star Jessica Gunning. But, FX was the evening’s big winner, with their epic series, Shogun, dominating the drama categories, with the great Hiroyuki Sanada winning the prize for Best Actor, and Anna Sawai taking Best Actress, alongside the show’s Best Drama win. Netflix’s stalker drama “Baby Reindeer” won four Emmys at Sunday night’s ceremony.
Along with triumphing in the limited or anthology series category, it earned trophies for Richard Gadd as a writer and lead actor as well Jessica Gunning as a supporting actress.
Taking the stage for the third time as “Baby Reindeer” won the top prize, creator and star Richard Gadd noted that the industry has been in an economic “slump” — but that there’s a way out.
“I do believe no slump was ever broken without a willingness to take risks,” he said. “I think if ‘Baby Reindeer’ has proved anything, it’s that there’s no set formula to this. That you don’t need big stars, proven IP, long-running series, catch-all storytelling to have a hit.”
“The only constant across any success in television is good storytelling,” he continued. “Good storytelling that speaks to our times.

After a tight race up against some of the most beloved shows of the season, Netflix phenomenon “Baby Reindeer” won the Emmy for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. The win for the record-breaking British dramedy from creator and star Richard Gadd was the last of the Tk Emmys it received at the 76th edition of the Emmy Awards, hosted by “Schitt’s Creek” Emmy winners Eugene and Dan Levy.
“Baby Reindeer” was nominated against “Fargo” (FX), “Lessons in Chemistry” (Apple TV+), “Ripley” (Netflix), and “True Detective: Night Country” (HBO) for the award.
Based on his one man show of the same name, which won two Edinburgh Fringe awards in 2019, “Baby Reindeer” tells the story of an aspiring stand-up comic that catches the eye of a female stalker, leading to a warped relationship between the pair that forces him to confront past trauma. “Baby Reindeer” also stars Jessica Gunning, Nava Mau, and Tom Goodman-Hill,...

Writer-actor Richard Gadd made a heartfelt speech at the Emmys on Sunday night addressing the plights and difficult subject matter of the semi-autobiographical limited Netflix series Baby Reindeer.
Honoring his win for Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series, in his speech, Gadd reflected: “This is the stuff of dreams. 10 years ago, I was down and outright. I never, ever thought I’d get my life together. I never ever thought I’d be able to rectify myself with what happened to me and get myself back on my feet again. Then here I am, just over a decade later, picking up one of the biggest writing awards in television.”
Baby Reindeer centers on comedian Donny Dunn’s (Gadd) parasocial and twisted relationship with a female stalker named Martha (Jessica Gunning), and the impact that it has on him as he unravels the deep traumas of his past. The...

Jessica Gunning won her first Emmy on Sunday night for her breakout supporting turn in Baby Reindeer, Netflix’s buzzy limited series created by and starring Richard Gadd. The win is the first of the night for the show, which previously scored at the Creative Arts Emmys with statuettes recognizing its casting and editing.
Gunning saved the “biggest thanks” of her speech for Gadd, saying, “I’ve tried so many times to put into words what working on Baby Reindeer meant, and I fail every time — so I’m going to sing…” After breaking into her now-famous laugh, she continued, “No, imagine… I’ll keep it simple and just say thank you for trusting me to be your Martha. I will never, ever forget her, or you, or this. It really means a lot, so thank you, Reindeer, and thank you for this [award].”

Jessica Gunning has just won her first Emmy Award for her portrayal of Martha in Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer.” Gunning was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for her work, one of 11 total nominations for the show.
After its April premiere, “Baby Reindeer” became one of the buzziest shows of the summer, catapulted into the Netflix Top 10 and earning instant awards speculation for Gunning, creator and star Richard Gadd, and the series itself. The show received nominations at the 76th Annual Emmy Awards for its casting, costuming, directing, editing, and music supervision, as well as in the performance categories for Gunning, Gadd, Tom Goodman-Hill, and Nava Mau (in Gunning’s category). The Creative Arts Emmys earlier in September awarded casting directors Nina Gold and Martin Ware as well as editors Peter H. Oliver and Benjamin Gerstein.

Baby Reindeer star Nava Mau emotionally celebrated her historic nomination on the Emmys red carpet.
While speaking with Laverne Cox for the E! broadcast of the 2024 Emmys red carpet, Cox was quick to get emotional as she embraced Mau with a hug.
“I’m supposed to keep it together, I’m the host,” a visibly teary-eyed Cox told Mau. “This show is so incredible, and the work that you do is so amazing.”
For this year’s show, Mau is nominated for best supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie, becoming the first Latina trans nominee in this category. Cox was notably the first openly transgender person to be nominated for an acting Emmy for Orange is the New Black at the time.

“Baby Reindeer” was always conceived as a limited series and with the lawsuit now facing Netflix and the production, it’s probably best left that way. Speaking to IndieWire’s Vincent Perella on the red carpet of the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, Gadd said he was delighted that Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has come out in support of the comedian recently as he faces litigation from his former stalker.
“I didn’t know any of that. I’ve been up here. I’ve been in L.A. soaking in the atmosphere. I’ve been focusing on Emmys and all the exciting things happening in the city,” Gadd said upon being told about Sarandos’ recent comments in support of him. “So I honestly couldn’t tell you what’s happening in the outside world right now. But I love Ted. I met him a few times. He’s been great to me.

TV’s biggest night is back for a second time this year, with the 76th Annual Emmy Awards back to their regularly-scheduled September ceremony. The impact of 2023’s Hollywood strikes is still rippling through the industry — including through the 75th Emmys, which took place earlier this year, in January — but the 2023-2024 Emmy nominees delivered another excellent year of television.
Despite the back-to-back ceremonies, the Emmys eligibility period holds strong; this ceremony will honor TV shows that premiered between June 2023 and May 2024. That includes pre-strike premieres like “The Bear” Season 2 and spring 2024 hits like “Hacks” Season 3. This was the first year without a lot of usual suspects in the Emmy race, such as “Succession,” “Ted Lasso,” “Barry,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” other favorites like “The Gilded Age,” “The Bear,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “The Crown” are still in the running.

The Hollywood Reporter and SAG-AFTRA kicked off Emmys weekend in star-studded style on Friday night, toasting top TV talent at their Emmy Nominees Night event.
The celebration, sponsored by Glenfiddich, Heineken and Shake Shack, was held at the Stanley II mansion overlooking Los Angeles and welcomed some of this year’s top contenders, including Shogun‘s Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada and Baby Reindeer stars Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning, Nava Mau and Tom Goodman-Hill. (See photos of the event.)
The night started right after sunset, with Abbott Elementary‘s Tyler James Williams as the first guest on the carpet. Despite being nominated for a third straight year, Williams told THR that the Emmy recognition never gets old: “There’s a lot of really good TV out there, so the fact that we’re nominated and considered and celebrated, it’s always super special. Emmy Experts Typing: What to do in that head-scratching Best Limited/TV Movie Supporting Actor race?
Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the very few categories keeping us up at night before Sunday’s ceremony.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve finally reached the end of the line. The 2024 Emmy Awards are Sunday night, meaning we can pack away our Emmy prognosticator hats for… 24 hours or so until we make our ridiculously early 2025 Emmy Award predictions next week. But before we get to next year’s race, we can take one last glance at this year’s contest. As in January, with the 2023 Emmys (2024 Edition), the 2024 Emmys have devolved into a trio of potential sweeps. “Shōgun,” “The Bear,” and “Baby Reindeer” are expected to play the parts of “Succession,” “The Bear,” and “Beef” on Sunday night – so much so that...

The name on everybody’s lips at this week’s Emmys is FX’s “Shōgun.”
Emmy-nominated actor and producer Hiroyuki Sanada was looking forward to seeing his fellow cast members at Sunday’s show. “I haven’t seen them in maybe two years,” he told Variety. “I’m looking forward to a reunion.
Sanada, co-star Anna Sawai, and showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks were among the Emmy-nominated attendees at Gold House‘s inaugural One House Toast to the Emmys.
In partnership with Macro and Nissan, Gold House honored the 2024 multicultural nominees and achievements across filmmaking at the celebration on Thursday night at the Maybourne Hotel in Beverly Hills.

“We are back once again for really a very fun tradition that Chris and I have had for many, many years. It’s 25 categories in 25 minutes. We don’t muck around here, we get straight to the point,” declares Gold Derby senior editor Rob Licuria, who is joined by managing editor Chris Beachum to debate their final predictions for all 25 Primetime Emmy categories. “I’m thrilled; we’re not in in a a random month like January, we’re back in September, where we belong,” Chris adds about their long-standing annual tradition of dedicating a minute to each category announced on Emmy night, and doing so in September. The ABC ceremony will be hosted by Emmy winning father and son duo Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, with festivities commencing at 5 p.m. Pt on Sunday, September 15.

Seven years after coming up short on their respective first and second Best TV Movie/Limited Series Directing Emmy bids against Jean-Marc Vallée (“Big Little Lies”), Steven Zaillian and Noah Hawley are involved in a rematch as helmers of the non-continuing programs “Ripley” and “Fargo.” Despite the quality of their new work and their strong Emmys resumes, they are widely expected to once again be bested by a complete first-timer: Weronika Tofilska (“Baby Reindeer”).
Tofilska is joined in this directing lineup’s category newcomer majority by Issa López (“True Detective”), Millicent Shelton (“Lessons in Chemistry”), and Gus Van Sant (“Feud”). Counting Zaillian and Hawley, Shelton is the only one in the bunch who has ever earned TV academy recognition for directing a non-limited series, as her very first bid came for “30 Rock” in 2009.

A Marvel superhero leads the pack in this year’s Emmy race for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series — but the rest of the nominees aren’t going away without a fight.

He’ll face competition, though, from Jonathan Bailey, who earned his first career nomination as star-crossed lover Tim in Showtime’s epic romance Fellow Travelers. Ryan Murphy has become the go-to person for actors who want to win Emmy Awards. In fact, 13 different performers have won Emmys for appearing in a Murphy production since 2010, for roles that are both humorous and monstrous. Starting with “Glee,” more than 40 actors have been recognized with a nomination by the TV academy, mostly in the limited series/movie categories. It’s no surprise Murphy’s name is typically heard at least once or twice per Emmy broadcast, whether in speeches thanking him or for nominations of his own for directing, producing and writing.
Scroll through our photo gallery above (or click here for direct access) to see which actors have won Emmys for Ryan Murphy shows, with Niecy Nash-Betts (“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”) being the most recent addition. Baby Reindeer editor Peter Oliver believes the 11-time Emmy-nominated limited series’ pacing is one of the reasons the dark comedy thriller works so well. However, he won’t take full credit for that. The show’s harrowing fourth episode is the one that has secured Oliver his first-time nod, an honor he shares with Benjamin Gerstein.
“I originally tried to make it more frenetic so it felt more jump-cut-y, but the director Weronika Tofilska slowed that right down,” he explains, agreeing it was the right thing to do. For mood and tone, one of the stylistic references she gave Oliver early on was Danny Boyle’s 1996 film Trainspotting.
While the Netflix seven-parter predominantly focuses on Donny Dunn (Richard Gadd) being stalked by Martha Scott (Jessica Gunning), a lawyer with a checkered past, the nominated fourth episode is primarily a flashback to Dunn’s grooming, drugging and sexual assault by a mentor.

Robert Downey Jr. could be about to join an exclusive actors club by becoming just the fourth person to win both an Oscar and an Emmy for acting in the same calendar year.
Downey Jr. won Best Supporting Actor at this year’s Oscars for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in “Oppenheimer.” That Christopher Nolan biopic, which also won Best Picture, followed Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer and depicted the scientist’s creation, and later guilt, of the atomic bomb. Downey Jr’s Strauss was a politician who was once an ally of Oppenheimer only to become his rival. Downey Jr’s portrayal of Strauss, the film’s villain, made him the obvious choice for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar and that remained throughout awards season. He won the BAFTA, Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG awards before he eventually won the Academy Award, beating fellow Oscar nominees Sterling K. Brown...

Tom Goodman-Hill is a face you should already know — because he’s done it all.
An actor who has been in the game for 30 years, Goodman-Hill’s résumé includes appearances on staple British television shows such as Doctor Who, Silent Witness, Call the Midwife and Doc Martin. The 56-year-old also appeared in Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror and the 2014 period thriller The Imitation Game.
But a role unlike he’s ever played before came to fruition with Richard Gadd‘s wildly successful Netflix series Baby Reindeer, which follows Donny, an amateur comedian played by Gadd, as he is stalked and harassed across several years. In the show, his stalker, Martha (Jessica Gunning), sends Donny over 41,000 emails, 744 tweets, 100 pages of letters and 350 hours of voicemails. Audiences watched in horror as she sexually assaulted him, derailed his relationships and threatened his family. Eventually, she is jailed.

Tom Goodman-Hill is an Emmy-nominated actor now and the “Baby Reindeer” star still can’t believe it. “It still doesn’t sound quite real. Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the limited races that “Baby Reindeer” seems poised to dominate. Or is it?
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re entering the final stretch before Emmys voting begins and our wheel o’ columns has swung around to the limited series race — aka “Just how many categories will ‘Baby Reindeer’ reign supreme in?” Let’s start with the easy ones: The Netflix juggernaut that has deftly compartmentalized its off-screen controversy is basically assured of winning Best Limited Series, Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress for Jessica Gunning, and Best Movie/Limited Writing for creator and star Richard Gadd. If “Baby Reindeer” somehow lost in any of those categories, I’d argue it would count as the biggest upset of the 2024 Emmys race.

Coming off his Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer,” Robert Downey Jr. was the heavy favorite to win the Emmy for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor for his multiple roles in HBO’s spring limited series “The Sympathizer.” But then the nominations were announced on July 17 and Downey ended up being the only nomination for his series. That knocked him down to second place in our odds behind Jonathan Bailey (“Fellow Travelers”). If there’s no other support for his program, he can’t really win, can he? Tell that to Mark Ruffalo.

“Baby Reindeer” submitted four actors for Emmy nominations this season, and all four of them made the cut. Of those, the least certain was Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor contender Tom Goodman-Hill. We had ranked him eighth in our odds for the nomination, but he defied the odds and got into the field of seven. And that might have been the hardest part. Now that he’s a nominee, he has jumped to third place in our odds for who will win. A victory would be especially impressive given how subtle and insidious a performance it is.
Goodman-Hill is a veteran character actor with credits spanning more than 30 years, but this is his first major industry recognition. He plays Darrien, a successful TV writer who entices struggling comedian Donny (Best Movie/Limited Actor nominee Richard Gadd) with promises of a career breakthrough, but is actually grooming him for sexual abuse.

For Fiona Harvey, the woman who claims to be the inspiration for Baby Reindeer’s stalker character, the Netflix series’ impressive Emmy recognition is a “slap in the face.” Baby Reindeer earned 11 nominations for the 2024 Emmy Awards — including an Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series nomination and nods for creator-star Richard Gadd and costars Jessica Gunning, Nava Mau, and Tom Goodman-Hill. But Richard Roth, Harvey’s lawyer, told the Daily Mail that the nominations were the latest “slap in the face” for Harvey — who “suffered a life-changing tragedy” due to Baby Reindeer’s “brutal lies,” he added. “There was some suggestion that the series shouldn’t have been nominated for Emmys because of this ongoing issue,” Roth said. “The Netflix claim that Baby Reindeer is a true story is clearly false.” Now Harvey is living in fear, Roth said. “She’s afraid to go out in case people shout at her in the street,...

The 2024 Emmys nominations were announced Wednesday morning, with Paul Rudd and Ryan Gosling among the list of first-time nominees.
Rudd earned his first Emmy nod, for best supporting actor in a comedy, for his season three run on Only Murders in the Building. And Ryan Gosling, recognized with a best guest actor in a comedy series nod for hosting a memorable episode of Saturday Night Live, is also a first-time Emmy contender.
Two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts also received her first Emmy nomination for her role in Ryan Murphy’s Feud: Capote vs. The Swans. The nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced today. While it was a mostly predictable affair, the announcement still sprinkled in a few welcome surprises among the expected contenders. The FX/Hulu contingent had a remarkable showing with two series dominating the proceedings. The feudal Japan-set drama "Shōgun" fared better than any other series with 25 nominations, and acclaimed dramedy "The Bear" set a new record for a comedy series with 23 nods.
Netflix ended up with the most nominations of any studio with 107. Leading their roster was surprise hit "Baby Reindeer," which received 11 nominations, including acting nods for creator Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning, Nava Mau, and Tom Goodman-Hill.
Several breakthroughs and firsts were celebrated, including Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Kali Reis (“True Detective”) becoming the first indigenous women to receive acting nominations. In its final season, FX’s “Reservation Dogs” scored its first Emmy nomination for Best Comedy Series. The show's star D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai also earned his first acting nod as did Selena Gomez for "Only Murders in the Building."
Other interesting stories coming out of the nomination announcement include the late Treat Williams receiving a posthumous nomination for "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans" and a surprise nod for Idris Elba as lead actor in a drama for “Hijack.” Elba edged out contenders like Cosmo Jarvis in “Shogun,” Colin Farrell in “Sugar,” and Nathan Fielder in “The Curse.”
The 76th Primetime Emmys airs September 15th on ABC, just eight months after the previous ceremony which was delayed due to the writers' and actors' strikes.

After scoring his first Emmy nomination for his work in the fifth season of FX’s crime anthology Fargo, Lamorne Morris hopped on the phone with Deadline to tease Sony’s SNL 1975 (working title) and Prime Video’s Spider-Noir, also discussing his hopes for the future of his career.
Of SNL 1975, Morris said, “Jason Reitman directed the hell out of this thing. It’s a great look at day one at SNL, the ups and downs, how the show almost didn’t happen, the characters. Lorne Michaels, played by Gabe Labelle, trying to manage all these personalities, all while getting this show on the air. Obviously, now, we know 50 years later what this show has become, but to see the origin of it and the actors on this movie will blow your mind.”
Part of the draw to the project, for Morris, was the chance to portray SNL...

Netflix content chief Bela Bajaria will be making a lot of pleasant phone calls today after the streamer landed 107 Emmy nominations across 35 different shows.
It’s not the streamer’s biggest nomination haul — that was 160 in 2020 — but it put it firmly in the lead with FX coming in a surprise second with 93 nominations, higher than HBO and Max.
There were sizeable hauls for British shows Baby Reindeer and The Crown, and Ripley, which it picked up after it had been produced, but Bajaria is most pleased about the diversity of its nominations.
Shows such as All The Light We Cannot See, Blue Eye Samurai, The Gentlemen, The Greatest Night In Pop, Griselda, Love on the Spectrum U.S., 3 Body Problem and The Upshaws were all recognized, highlighting its “breadth” of programming, according to Bajaria.

The nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced live from Hollywood this morning, and "The Bear" and "Shōgun" appear to be the shows to beat. The two FX on Hulu series earned a stunning 23 and 25 nominations respectively, with "Shōgun" earning several cast members first-time nominations and "The Bear" breaking the Emmys' all-time-record for the most nods in one year in the comedy category. The show –- which, as genre purists will surely point out, is actually a dramedy that often leans towards drama –- beats previous record holder "30 Rock" by one nomination.
Elsewhere on the ballot, it's clear that the absence of HBO juggernaut "Succession" has left a void in the drama category, one that several shows are vying to fill. Period pieces "The Gilded Age" and "The Crown" put up a good showing, while sci-fi shows "Fallout" and "3 Body Problem" also found a spot in the Best Drama Category.
