To proclaim that film adaptations of video games have a spotty history of box office success would be an understatement. In fact, the only such effort to inspire more than a single big-screen sequel has been Resident Evil, and most attempts to achieve similar success have resulted in epic disasters like Super Mario Bros., Wing Commander and Bloodrayne over the years. So, it’s worth noting that Ratchet & Clank – the first feature-length film based on the massively successful video game series – had the odds stacked against it from the start.
Whereas some video game films (like the aforementioned Mario adventure) are misguided enough to disregard the mythology that fans have grown to love, the narrative of Ratchet & Clank remains remarkably true to the 2002 game that launched the franchise as well as the revamped PlayStation 4 version that recently hit shelves. The story chronicles the origin story of the titular heroes (voiced...

You can take Will Smith out of an "Independence Day" sequel, but can you replace with...Liam Hemsworth? Maybe. "The Hunger Games" star has apparently been offered a role in "ID Forever," coming in 2016. No word yet on what his part would be, or even what the story details are, but if Roland Emmerich's big plan for this blockbuster followup is to make it charisma free, he's on the right track. At least Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are expected to return. Please? [The Wrap] Rosamund Pike and Joel Kinnaman are teaming up for "The Bends." The adventure flick focuses on "a mysterious discovery at the bottom of the ocean that reopens old issues for a former combat Marine who is working to pay off his debt to the mob." Jean Luc Herbulot ("Dealer") is at the helm. [THR] Lastly, Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Ed Helms, Diane Keaton, Anthony Mackie, Amanda Seyfried,...

According to Forbes magazine, Dwayne Johnson is the top-grossing actor of 2013 in terms of how much his movies earned, not his salary. Thanks to "Fast and Furious 6," "GI Joe: Retaliation" and "Pain and Gain," the actor's films earned a total of $1.3 billion, just beating Robert Downey Jr, who brought it in $1.2 billion with "Iron Man 3." The highest-grossing actress is Sandra Bullock, who starred in "Gravity" and "The Heat," earning a total of $862 million. That was good enough to take fifth place on the list. Paul Walker also made the list in sixth place, mostly for "Fast and Furious 6," which is the biggest hit of his career. 1. Dwayne Johnson - $1.3 billion 2. Robert Downey Jr. - $1.2 billion 3. Steve Carell - $964 million 4. Vin Diesel - $887 million 5. Sandra Bullock - $862 million 6. Paul Walker - $789 million 7. Billy Crystal - $743 million 7. John Goodman - $743 million 9. Who doesn’t love movie posters? They’re big and shiny and sometimes they have the giant heads of flawless movie star faces on them. Who doesn’t love that? To start off with, here’s are two new character posters for Justin Lin’s “Fast and Furious 6″, featuring Sung Kang and Gal Gadot, and a second poster with Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson. The film also stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Luke Evans, Elsa Pataky, Gina Carano, and zooms into theaters this May 24, 2013. Meanwhile, the folks at “The Hangover 3″ have unleashed two more posters for Todd Phillips’ comedy. The final one, we’re told (until the direct-to-dvd prequels starring nobodies, anyway). “The Hangover 3″ stars Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, Ed Helms, John Goodman, Heather Graham, Jeffrey Tambor, Ken Jeong, Jamie Chung, Gillian Vigman, Mike Epps, Mike Tyson, and opens at the same weekend...

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (Warner Bros.) An eleven year-old boy (newcomer Thomas Horn, in an incredible debut) discovers a mysterious key amongst the possessions of his late father (Tom Hanks) who perished in 9/11. Determined to find the lock it matches, the boy embarks on a Picaresque odyssey across New York City. Director Stephen Daldry and screenwriter Eric Roth have fashioned a film both grand and intimate, beautifully-adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel, thought by most who read it to be unfilmable. Fine support from Jeffrey Wright, Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Viola Davis and the great Max von Sydow. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.

Back in 1997, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck catapulted to stardom, winning an Oscar for writing "Good Will Hunting," the coming-of-age story in which they also starred. They were the young toasts of Hollywood, and in the years that followed, each went on to make some impressive films: "Saving Private Ryan," "Rounders" and "The Talented Mr. Ripley" for Damon, and "Armageddon," "Shakespeare In Love" and "Boiler Room" for Affleck.
Damon continued to make hit films, starting up the Bourne series, amongst others, but it became a bit more dicey for Affleck. He suffered through a number of public relationships, and began featuring in movies that didn't quite hit it big with the public or critics; "Gigli" and "Daredevil," amongst others, now stain his IMDb page.
Life wasn't easy, and as his best friend and writing partner, Damon had a hard time watching it.

It's an afternoon of tiny movie news stories including a release date for Fast and Furious 6, a trailer date for Mission Impossible 4, more casting in Ben Affleck's Argo and word on Reznor's HBO show. Let's get started...
John Goodman is in negotiations to join Ben Affleck's political thriller Argo, a true story in which the CIA and the Canadian government teamed to rescue six hostages from Iran in 1979 using a ruse in which they said the hostages were part of a Hollywood film crew scouting a movie titled "Argo," and using those fake identities, they were able to flee the country. Goodman will play John Chambers, the Oscar-winning Planet of the Apes makeup artist called in to help sell the ruse. Alan Arkin was previously cast as Hollywood producer Lester Siegel, an O.S.S. veteran described as equal parts bookie and rabbi. [Variety]

The drama about King George VI (Colin Firth) and how he overcomes his speech impediment to unite his country was given the Best Film Ensemble at the 2011 Sag Awards. Firth also received the Best Actor trophy.
Natalie Portman continues her awards momentum by winning the Best Actress trophy for "Black Swan." David O. Russell's "The Fighter" yielded Best Supporting trophies for Christian Bale for Supporting Actor and Melissa Leo for Supporting Actress.

Today the nominations for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards was released. The King’s Speech and The Fighter received the most nominations, with four each. Thankfully the Guild seems to know what they are doing unlike The Golden Globes who pretty much screwed up all the nominations.
The nominees here are usually a very strong indication of how the acting award nominees will play out at the Oscars. King’s Speech has long been an Oscar favourite, but David O. Russell’s The Fighter has gained considerable steam in the past few weeks. Last year, 19 out of 20 SAG nominees went to the Oscars as well so you can be sure that The Fighter and King’s Speech will get a best picture nomination. The 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS on January 20th. See the complete list below.

The Screen Acors Guild has released their award nominations for their upcoming 17th annual award ceremony, which will take place on January 30, 2011.
There are some great nominations here. My favorite picks include Christian Bale for his role in The Fighter, Natalie Portman in her role in Black Swan, and Jesse Eisenberg for his role in The Social Network. As much as I love most of these films, I'm surprised that Inception is no where to be seen. That was one of the best films of the year and it seems to be escaping a lot of the nominations in all the award ceremonies this year.
Check out the list of Film and TV nominations below and tell us what your favorite are!

Okay, totally kidding about the Colfer Lifetime Achievement Award thing - that will be going to Ernest Borgnine. But does it seem to you that the kid who plays Kurt Hummel is getting an awful lot of awards season love? (And wouldn't McHale's Navy have been so much better with him in it?)
The latest outpouring of Colfer acclaim comes from the Screen Actors Guild who announced their 17th annual SAG nominees this morning.
The Glee cast is up for a comedy ensemble award, but Colfer was the only cast member other than Jane Lynch to be recognized individually. And given who he's up against he's almost certain to be the frontrunner!
Another bit of good news for a Glbt favorite, The Kids Are All Right, scored individual acting nods for Annete Bening, Mark Rufallo, and also a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast.

The complete list of nominations for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards follows below. The ceremony will be held on January 30th, 2011.
Nothing really to highlight here, unfortunately. SAG voters apparently didn’t care for Halle Berry’s performance as much as the Golden Globes did, because she’s not on this list. And neither is Idris Elba, who was also nominated for a Golden Globe. The cast of For Colored Girls got no love either.
The significance here is that SAG nominees and winners are voted on by members of the union – essentially, their peers.
But one thing that should be obvious by now is that the Oscar race is going to come down to 4 films and the performances in those films: The Social Network, Black Swan, The King’s Speech, and The Fighter. I still have to see the last 2.
