Kevin Feige was part of the infamous Marvel Creative Committee (McC) in the early stages of the MCU and played a crucial role in preventing the committee from ruining Captain America. According to reports, Feige and Louis D’Esposito vehemently opposed the committee’s idea to set the character in modern times. There were screaming matches during meetings of the McC, with Feige emerging successful and giving us the period piece, Captain America: The First Avenger.

According to the book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, the McC consisted of Dan Buckley, Joe Quesada, Brian Michael Bendis, Louis D’Esposito, Kevin Feige, and Alan Fine. The book suggested that most of the unpopular and toxic opinions came from Alan Fine, who was the Dwight to Ike Perlmutter’s Michael.

Ever since 2008’s Iron Man release, MCU, with its box-office collection, became the most popular superhero franchise. But for them, 2023 was a disastrous year.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
The first was in February with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The $200 million-priced film earned only $464 million in the worldwide market. The Marvels, starring Brie Larson, also went through the same phase as it roughly touched the $200 million mark globally and became the lowest-grossing installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The only good news for the studio was the May release of Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3, starring Chris Pratt, which grossed $845 million at the global market.

It took Marvel Studios three Spider-Man movies to set up Tom Holland as the hero of his own film — a film that still hasn't materialized. Both producer Amy Pascal and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige have seemingly confirmed a fourth Spider-Man movie starring the British actor is forthcoming, but just what form this will take and when it will arrive remain unclear. Which is a shame because, as mentioned, Holland has yet to really be the star of his own Spidey flick.
Debuting in "Captain America: Civil War," Holland went on to front three solo Spider-Man outings, but he always seemed to play second fiddle to either MCU world-building or other well-established MCU characters. But at the end of 2021's "Spider-Man: No Way Home," Holland's Peter Parker/Spider-Man was seemingly positioned to finally become the hero of his own story moving forward. Joe Russo gained enough cache with "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame" that he's been able to pump out generic streaming action flicks unimpeded ever since. Not to be needlessly negative, but I've seen "The Gray Man" and I don't remember a single thing that happened in "The Gray Man." Russo has also penned two "Extraction" movies, which shot to the top of Netflix's most-watched charts but similarly felt as if they came and went without making all that much of an impression. All of which isn't too egregious, but Joe is also ready to welcome an AI-driven garbage future in which our films are produced entirely by machines.
In other words, I'm far from the biggest Joe Russo fan. But that doesn't mean I can't give the man his due when it comes to his Marvel work. Alongside his brother, Anthony, Joe is responsible for some of the...

With recent films in the Marvel franchise like The Marvels and Madame Web failing at the box office, there seems to be a definite case of superhero fatigue that has set in. Another defining factor for Marvel not finding favor with fans could be the absence of marquee stars like Chris Evans who hung up his boots as Captain America after Avengers: Endgame.
Chris Evans in Captain America: Civil War
The actor recently weighed in on the current situation and the reasons behind superhero narratives failing to connect with audiences. While he did defend the franchise that gave him superstardom, Evans was also realistic and candid about what could have gone wrong.

Samuel L. Jackson is one of the most highly accomplished actors in all of Hollywood right now, whose roles in films such as Pulp Fiction and Snakes on A Plane helped make him a global phenomenon. Of course, he is more known now for his role as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With that said, he is now being considered a typecast actor by a fan who made an incredibly obvious joke.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has undergone numerous changes and developments over the years, getting mixed responses from fans and critics alike. After all, fans still fondly remember the heyday of Marvel, especially when The Avengers came out in 2012. Not even Samuel L. Jackson has been able to save the franchise for now.

The screenplay to the 2014 mega-hit "Guardians of the Galaxy," the 10th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was credited to director James Gunn and longtime Hollywood screenwriter Nicole Perlman. Perlman also has story credits on the films "Captain Marvel" and "Pokémon Detective Pikachu," and has previously been attached to a sequel to the 1986 Jim Henson film "Labyrinth," as well as film adaptations of the 1980s toy properties "Visionaries" and "M.A.S.K."
Perlman, according to an old article on the Marvel website, was recruited into the Marvel writing room way back in 2009 and was offered the opportunity to write a spec script for a "lesser" Marvel property as a test of her style and working capabilities. She selected "Guardians of the Galaxy," a Marvel title that had been rebooted by authors Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning the year before. Perlman said to her interviewer that this was a common...

Do you remember the show "Raising Dad"? The 2001-2002 single-season series from The WB grabbed my attention because it was another show starring "Full House" star Bob Saget, but would also serve as the gateway to two actors who would become all-time favorites of mine: Kat Dennings and Brie Larson. When it was announced that the latter was going to appear in "Fast X," I couldn't resist bringing up her history of playing a hot rodder in the Disney Channel Original Movie "Right on Track," and I'm always elated when people realize that Larson is one of the members of the Six Chicks clique in "13 Going on 30" and one of the popular girls in "Sleepover."

"The Avengers" writer/director Joss Whedon may be long banished from the Marvel Cinematic Universe now, but his influence remains seeped into the whole enterprise. The screwball, genre-aware dialogue Whedon writes is now the McU's house style — if not a hindrance. Other writers have been aping it to diminishing returns ever since.
The behind-the-scenes book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios" by Gavin Edwards, Dave Gonzales, and Joanna Robinson details how Marvel Studios first hired Whedon. His gain was another writer's loss; Zak Penn had already written a script for "The Avengers," but Whedon threw his version out and started from scratch. "There was a script. There just wasn't a script I was going to film a word of," Whedon said. This move is an early harbinger of how Whedon would make his style into Marvel's own.
As "MCU" notes, this wasn't the first time this had happened to Penn.

Whether you love the current trend of superhero cinema or hate them all with the fiery passion of Martin Scorsese after he stubbed his big toe on a particularly pointed corner, there's no question that Marvel's ascension and box office dominance is going to go down as one of the most interesting moments in movie history. It's certainly the biggest shift I've ever seen in over 20 years of being in the weeds covering the industry.

Long before we reached the point of Marvel Cinematic Universe overload; before "Secret Invasion" failed to encapsulate the momentous and historic feeling of the comic book story on which it was based, in a time where being accused of overworking CGI artists in order to churn out a never-ending stream of "content" was inconceivable, there was just Kevin Feige and his dream of a shared cinematic universe.
Of course, now such a concept is widespread, with everyone from Universal and its failed "Dark Universe" to Lionsgate and its wildly successful "John Wick" franchise trying their hand at establishing a shared on-screen world. But whatever you want to say about Feige these days, there's no doubt his contributions to blockbuster film-making have been nothing short of revolutionary. Over the past 15 or so years, the MCU has redefined big-budget movie-making. And it all started with 2008's "Iron Man."

Late in the upcoming book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, authors Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards write about the explosion of Marvel movies and shows over the past few years — and, with it, the explosion in responsibility for MCU mastermind Kevin Feige. “Marvel Studios hadn’t been built to scale up the way Disney was demanding,” they suggest. “Its greatest strength quickly became its weakness. Zack Snyder won't direct "Star Wars: Episode VII," but he will direct a "Star Wars" movie. That's the report from Vulture, which states Snyder -- the director of the upcoming "Man of Steel" -- will get the behind the camera for a new "Star Wars" film that takes place within the "Star Wars" universe.
As Vulture notes, Snyder wasn't too keen on directing "Star Wars: Episode VII" when asked about it last year. “I don’t think I’d be interested in [directing it],” Snyder to the Los Angeles Times. “I'm a huge 'Star Wars' fanatic. I just think doing [episodes] seven, eight and nine is just a slippery slope. It's a whole other mythological experiment I'm excited to see, but it's a lot of effort."
According to Vulture, the new "Star Wars" film would be loosely based on Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai."
Snyder is a controversial figure in the geek sect.

Early this morning, I attended a midnight showing of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace in 3D. It was a fairly miserable experience for numerous reasons. As the night progressed, I kept a running diary of the events that transpired and the audience reaction. So, here's how that went down. 11:00 p.m. Honestly, I have no idea how big the crowd will be. The lack of buzz this week makes me think that we don't have to worry too much about getting decent seats, but this is New York City and this is a Star Wars movie. 11:17 p.m. You know, maybe I'm having flashbacks to the release of the Special Editions in 1997, but it's really hard to imagine opening night of a Star Wars movie without a large crowd. 11:23 p.m. A member of my party states, "We're seeing it near Nyu. Try as we might, we can't see any movie in a vacuum. This is most evident with a franchise film. Is there a way to critically approach Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides without contextualizing it among the previous three films? Is there a point? This movie does not exist on its own, nor could it. To say, then, that On Stranger Tides is good "for a Pirates film" is a reasonable analysis, even if film studies purists may turn their nose at such a turn of phrase.
But I think we all know what I mean. The Pirates franchise is a curious one, indeed. For something that has greatly altered what we wear on Halloween and what embarrassing uncles like to quote, it's been an intellectual property with a rather noticeable problem: only one of the three previous movies is any good. The third one, in fact, was bloody awful.

I have no idea what any of this means, so I'll leave it at that and let you discuss amongst yourselves.
Perhaps a good sign for how Bridesmaids is tracking, THR reports another comedy about bridesmaids is underway from producers Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. This one is an indie tentatively titled Bachelorette. Kirsten Dunst, Adam Scott, Lizzy Caplan and Casey Wilson ("Happy Endings") are all attached for writer/director Leslye Headland, a staff writer on the FX show "Terriers." I'm very happy to tell you that the occasional podcast I've been doing with pals David Ehrlich, Matt Patches and Dave Gonzales now has a home-- Kino Katey, the new section of the site we've launched this week. We're still working on coming up with a name, but for now call it the Kino Katey Podcast, and feel free to make your own suggestions. For our inaugural episode at our new home, it's just Dave and me, since Patches and David are off poisoning themselves with barbecue at SXSW. But don't worry, Dave and I are doing just fine! We talked about the string of sci-fi movies coming out this spring and whether or not that's a trend that spells the end of the superhero genre. We also kept digressing into how excited we are about Super 8, how wary we are about Sucker Punch, and comparing notes on our...

Back in late 2000, my nephew and I had an idea to launch a film/movie review site that appealed to the English speaking Latino-American film audience who are big movie goers.Nowadays the Latino population has proved to be the heaviest movie goers with a per capita viewing of 9.9 films during the year, representing 15% of admissions. So we decided to call it LatinoReview (Lr) and my nephew did his first review of Snatch, which is no longer online but you can see how we started back in January 2001 by clicking Here.At the time I just wanted a site that did movie reviews due to the fact that I used to work on Wall St., and I noticed that just doing reviews wasn't helping, so I asked for help. The first version or Lr was God awful and till this date I still remember calling up Patrick Sauriol from Coming...

At long last, the Oscars are finally happening on Sunday, meaning we can stop talking about the movies of 2010, stop debating whether The King's Speech is Oscar bait or just a damn good movie, and move on with our lives for Christ's sake. Of course for some people, even people who will be watching the Oscars on Sunday, the awards are just a distraction from actually good movies, or worst-case scenario, actually harmful to the movie industry we all love. Rather than just being a good time where people get to dress up and congratulate themselves, the Oscars set up arbitrary and rigged definition of "Best ____" and lessen us all in the process. For my latest podcast get-together with the usual crowd, we had two Oscar-haters-- Dave Gonzales and David Ehrlich-- take on two people who wanted to defend them-- Matt Patches and myself. The conversation you can listen...

It's been while since I've hopped on Skype with my regular podcast pals, and we've missed it as much as you hopefully have. So at the urging of the ever-stalwart Dave Gonzales, I got into a conversation with him and David Ehrlich (Matt Patches, who completes our quartet, was sadly busy) about a few things that were on our minds. Primarily we talked about the deal that the Criterion Collection has struck with Hulu Plus to bring their immense, amazing collection of DVDs to stream exclusively at that site, which previously had been a way for you to pay an unnecessary amount of money for old episodes of The Office. We wondered if it was a great leap forward for the futures of movies online, for paying for content that we're used to being free, or if real Criterion fans would still clutch their Blu-Rays and not shell out the...

It's the last week of 2010, which means it's time for looking over the year that was and making a lot-- a Lot-- of lists. Here at Cinema Blend we've been all over it; you can read my top ten list and Josh's, and all the rest of our 2010-in-list-form wrap-up here. But before we ring in the new year it's also time for the podcast buddies to chime in with their own picks for the best films of 2010, not just listing them but arguing about what we picked and what we didn't, and marveling at the fact that we all picked the same movie for the #2 spot. Because he has, as he puts it, a "real job" and didn't see as movies as the rest of us, Dave Gonzales was on board to moderate, and David Ehrlich, Matt Patches and I supplied all our individual top ten lists. None of...

I have to admit, I was expecting more people to be talking about Love and Other Drugs this morning-- the Anne Hathaway/Jake Gyllenhaal romantic comedy had been heavily promoted, and seemed like a good option for families getting together over Thanksgiving, at least families where everyone is over the age of 17 and can handle a few penis jokes. But the movie only grossed $14 million over the five-day weekend, meaning far fewer of you saw it than saw Tangled or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 for the fourth time. Now that Anne Hathaway is set to host the Oscars we may be in for a lot more talk about the movie, but it's still far from a big hit. And yet, my pals David Ehrlich, Dave Gonzales and I felt like there was a lot to discuss about the movie, and a few weeks ago got together on...

Hopefully last week you caught the audio conversation I had with fellow critics and bloggers Dave Gonzales and Matt Patches and thought to yourself, "I'd like to hear more of where that came from," not "God, I hope I never hear those voices again." When the three of us wrapped up that conversation we knew we probably wanted to do it again but had no idea what to talk about, until the next topic presented itself-- where else?-- on Twitter. Another friend David Ehrlich, of Cinematical fame, had seen 127 Hours and pretty much hated it, an opinion shared by virtually no one else in the critical community-- the movie stands at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes-- and I was dying to hear David defend his position, especially since I knew he was incredibly well-informed on film and would probably have a much stronger opinion than me just saying "I liked it!

I already brought you all the major details from the brand-new trailer for The Thing that showed at New York Comic Con, but what did the cast and filmmakers have to say for themselves? I caught up with producer Marc Abraham, star Joel Edgerto and director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. after the panel to pester them, alongside Dave Gonzales from Latino Review, about some of the details of the horror prequel, from how they were keeping true to John Carpenter's film without slaving over the details to what kind of non-human cargo Edgerton's pilot character might wind up flying over the course of the film. Each of the interviews are about three minutes long-- standard for those lickety-split press lines-- and you can watch them all below. Between these interviews and our extensive reporting from the set, we've got pretty much everything they're going to let you know about...

Many audiences don't realize it, but the movie industry is in serious trouble. Going to the cinema used to be a big event for couples and families. Not long after talking pictures were created, audiences would actually dress up in their Sunday best to go to the movies because they considered it a luxury equal to a trip to a live show. Now its become a cheap date where for a couple of bucks you can treat someone to popcorn, soda and maybe a little food and basically not look at each other for two hours. The biggest problem is that the studios have shifted their focus from quality to technology, always trying to outdo one another with the latest gags rather than produce good stories. We all know this, yet like suckers, when the latest spectacle gets promoted, we end up dazzled and hypnotized like those poor children by the Piped Piper of Hamelin.

As former bandmate and friend Dave Alvin points out in his liner notes, Chris Gaffney was a man who didn’t care much for boundaries or borders. Torn between his love of the classic country songs of George Jones and Merle Haggard and the pleading soul music of Otis Redding, Chris and his band The Hacienda Brothers simply split the difference. And that facile description doesn’t even begin to account for his love of accordion-driven norteño polkas or AC/DC balls-to-the-wall rock ‘n roll. Music programmers and record labels had no idea what to do with him. And so he lived in virtual obscurity, touring with Alvin from time to time, recording a handful of absolutely great but ignored solo albums and with his songwriting partner Dave Gonzales as part of The Hacienda Brothers, playing west coast dive bars on the weekends, and writing a couple hundred of the...
