We are junkies and art is our drug. Family we love – but art? We are meshuggah for art. You think I wanted to leave my sisters, my mama and my papa and go stick my stupid head in the mouth of lions?”
So rants Judd Hirsch’s “Uncle Boris” in one of the pivotal scenes from Steven Spielberg’s masterful auto-biopic The Fabelmans. Boris, an eccentric crank based on the filmmaker’s real great-uncle, unleashes the abrasive life lesson on the adolescent Spielberg-alike Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel Labelle) during Hirsch’s fleeting appearance in the film. (Meshuggah, by the way, means “crazy” in Yiddish, and those lions are – for Sammy at least – metaphorical.) It was a moment that Spielberg claims made him become a director. And it was a scene that secured Hirsch his second Oscar nomination, a record-breaking 42 years after his first. Now a few days shy of 88, Hirsch would...

We’re back today with a brand new round-up of horror and sci-fi home media releases that are headed home today, and it includes quite the array of titles. Beloved daytime soap opera Search for Tomorrow ended its 35-year run on December 26, 1986. After more than three decades on CBS, the Procter & Gamble-produced drama moved in NBC in 1982 but failed to draw in viewers on peacock network.
In "A Complete, Concise Yearly History of TV Soap Operas" in 1978 for The Soap Box, John Genovese described attempts by CBS to launch a successful TV soap opera in 1951.
Then on September 3 of that year, CBS jumped on the bandwagon again with two new offerings. The first, The Egg and I, featured Pat Kirkland and Frank Craven in a serial adaptation of Betty's McDonald's book. Egg went rotten on August 1, 1952.
The other serial to make its appearance that day was a Procter & Gamble Production called Search for Tomorrow, created by Roy Winsor and headlining a B-movie starlet named Mary Stuart in the central role of beleaguered housewife Joanne Barron. Need we...

Listen I have nothing against ants – rubber tree plants, veracity, etc – but put enough of them together and I get nervous. Radiate them? You get the big ass ones in Them! (1954). Delve into cosmic circumstance and you have the smarty pants overlords of Phase IV (1974). Throw a bunch on the television, make them poisonous and you end up with The Love Boat meets The Towering Inferno goofiness of Robert Scheerer’s It Happened at Lakewood Manor (1977), a pretty silly and damn entertaining TV flick.
Aka Ants! upon rebroadcasting and future home video release, It Happ – screw it; let’s just call it Ants! okay? We spent the weekend enjoying the hell out of "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," the new Netflix series from "30 Rock" royalty Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. Starring "Office" and "Bridesmaids" vet Ellie Kemper, it chronicles the life of a woman who escapes from an apocalyptic cult and builds a new life in New York City. It is a scream. Here are seven major things to appreciate about it. 1. Veteran TV actresses get tons to do. "30 Rock" provided a wonderful showcase for veteran comic actors, and we can thank the Fey/Carlock mothership for giving Elaine Stritch, Jan Hooks, Anita Gillette, Tim Conway, Alan Alda, and many, many more such fun and weird roles. "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" is off to a great start in this area: Regular cast members Carol Kane and Jane Krakowski rack up some of the biggest laughs every episode as they notch another hit in their incredible TV careers,...

Everyone flies down to Florida to be with Phil after his mom’s passing. Claire helps Phil with his mom’s last wish for Phil’s dad, Mitch helps Gloria contend with an outstanding arrest warrant in Florida, Cam finds himself fitting right into an elderly women’s group, and Jay runs into his first.
Favorite Moments:
“It’s Florida. If I want to sweat more, I’ll just move my arms.” “Oh no, she’s going to ask me to throw her ashes in the Pope’s face!” Mitchell Pritchett – Man of The People. It takes Cam about five minutes to become one of the gossiping old biddies. The cornucopia of faboo older actresses, including Anita Gillette, Millicent Martin, Mary Jo Catlett, and an almost unrecognizable Ann Magnuson. Returning to the Irish Catholic roots he explored in his 1995 debut breakout film The Brothers McMullen, prolific actor/filmmaker Edward Burns delivers an overstuffed holiday feast in The Fitzgerald Family Christmas. This tale of a dysfunctional family whose members experience enough personal crises to fuel a dozen films is a virtual compendium of clichés, but the star’s sheer likeability makes it go down as easily as a cup of eggnog. Burns plays Garry, the de facto patriarch of a Queens, New York brood that includes six siblings and his soon to be 70-years-old mother Rosie (Anita Gillette). The

The Fitzgerald Family Christmas marks writer/director/star Edward Burns’ return to capturing the working class milieu of his earlier work in films like indie darling The Brothers McMullen. Somewhat surprisingly, the film also marks Burns’ very first foray into a making a film about the holidays. In the film, Burns plays Gerry, a grown man who still lives with his mother (Anita Gillette) on Long Island. He also lives with the burden of running his family’s bar and filling in for his father (Ed Lauter), who walked out his large Irish family – a total of seven siblings – twenty years ago. When his father announces that he’s dying and wants to spend his last Christmas with his family, the disparate siblings come together and debate whether or not they are ready to forgive their father for the transgressions of the past. Amidst all the family drama, Gerry also strikes up a romance with at-home nurse...

Like any good Irish-Catholic family, the Fitzgerald clan features a lot of siblings. The eldest of seven children, Gerry (Edward Burns) adopted the role of patriarch when their father (Ed Lauter) walked out on them over twenty years ago. Fortysomething, single and childless, Gerry still resides with their mother (Anita Gillette), while the other siblings each have their own individual dramas to contend with -- individual being the operative word, as none of the siblings show much desire to share their personal problems with each other, unless forced. At the onset of writer-director Edward Burns' The Fitzgerald Family Christmas, Gerry is attempting to convince his siblings to celebrate their mother's 70th birthday together. Gerry has an ulterior motive for the gathering; he wants the family to vote on whether their long-estranged father should be allowed to spend Christmas Day with them. Unfortunately, their mother's birthday is only a couple days before Christmas,...

Sometimes once is just not enough, so, today, we have a super-special encore conversation with a recent InDepth InterView participant who shares even more candid tales from her impossibly colorful, genre-spanning career on Broadway and in Hollywood - star of properties as diverse as the Broadway musicals Mr. President, Kelly and Theyre Playing Our Song, to movies like Moonstruck and Shall We Dance to her numerous TV appearances on everything from Match Game to Quincy to 30 Rock - chameleon-like comedienne and actress Anita Gillette. Discussing some of the more ribald and hilarious stories from her idiosyncratic showbiz career - such as the riotous backstage goings-on out of town at the tryout of one of Broadway biggest bombs, Kelly - as well as spine-tingling you had to be there-type memories of the Golden Age - like Irving Berlin stopping by the Winter Garden every Wednesday just to see her Act One...

Mixing Comedy & Soap: A History of the Serialized Situation Comedy
By Doug Prinzivalli
As one of the producers of the hit web series Pretty - a parody hybrid of reality TV and soaps - I thought it would be a fun idea to take a brief look at the long history of the serialized situation comedy. The idea of mixing comedy with soap elements is not a new one - in fact it started over 60 years ago.
The First Hundred Years (CBS 1950-52) was a mildly humorous daily soap about newlyweds who are gifted with a bat-infested Victorian mansion. Sounds pretty wacky to me. After less than two years, it was replaced by something called The Guiding Light.
The Egg & I (CBS 1951-52) Based on a book by Betty MacDonald and the 1947 film (starring Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray) that followed, this show followed the misadventures of city folk...

The stars are lining up to appear on one of NBC's most popular shows, "30 Rock". Although producers are keeping tight-lipped about the finale, rumors are circulating that the "The Bourne Identity" star, Matt Damon, is set to steal the heart of Liz - Tina Fey - after she meets him, the man of her dreams, at a wedding marathon. In the finale Damon plays an airline pilot who appears on the show and is a huge fan of "The Girly Show". Apparently he will also return to kick off the first episode of the fall. The show has had a slew of big names the past few weeks. On the Mother's Day special on May 6 Buzz Aldrin, Anita Gillette and Jan Hooks all showed face time and the show was an instant hit. Gillette played Liz's mom. Liz tried to set up her mother with her former lover, Buzz Aldrin.

Elaine Stritch is putting the mother in Mother's Day on "30 Rock."
On the Thursday, May 6 episode titled "The Moms," Stritch reprises her role as Colleen Donaghy, mother to Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin). And let's just say that she gets a little involved with his Avery-Nancy (Elizabeth Banks, Julianne Moore) love triangle.
"Well she thinks he's got to catch up for God's sakes. You know, grow up," Stritch tells the press. "He's involved in a lot of romantic bull**** and she tries to straighten him out."
Jack doesn't exactly welcome his mother's meddling though.
"[He takes] another stab at trying to get her to stay out of his life," explains Stritch. "I don't think he wants her to try to straighten him out. But as it turns out, he's very grateful because she's very straightforward with him. They really have a wonderful relationship and love each other very, very deeply."
Aww, we're getting rather verklempt.

In a small Deep South town in 1942, "The Summer of Ben Tyler" was a tough summer -- even if liberating.
Another of those involving Hallmark Hall of Fame tales on CBS, "Tyler" covers two anguishing problems, at least for this town at that time.
One is the adoption of a newly orphaned black boy, Ben (Charles Mattocks), by the loving and white Rayburns (James Woods and Elizabeth McGovern). The other is the domination of the town in general, and lawyer Temple Rayburn specifically, by slyly munificent Spencer Maitland (Len Cariou), owner of town employer Maitland Mills.
The town, at least the gossipy old marms, fuss over Ben's presence in the Rayburn home; Maitland, desiring to extend his power base, urges Rayburn to run for the state Senate and pays the bills. But then Maitland's drunken son kills a black woman in a rainy hit-and-run and looks to get away with it, enveloping Rayburn in moral dilemmas.
It's a warm, wise script by Alabama native Robert Inman, and director Arthur Allan Seidelman has a solid cast, including the can-do-everything Woods as the laid-back lawyer and Cariou as the deceptive town tyrant. Two newcomers deserve special mention: Julia McIlvaine as the Rayburns' spunky daughter and Mattocks as the mildly retarded Ben, who is "a fine fellow" and wise well beyond his supposed capabilities.
