Just weeks ago, Sir Elton John became the 19th entertainer to win the highly desirable Egot by claiming his first ever Emmy Award. And now, which person is the most likely to be the 20th Egot later this year, in 2025 or beyond? Here is a summary of the 80 people who have the best chance right now.
The most likely duo could be composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (actually meaning a 20th and 21st Egot if they win). They are producers and songwriters for the third season of “Only Murders in the Building,” so they will have a couple of opportunities in September at the Emmys. They first won an Oscar, Tony, and Grammy.
For the 2024 Grammys, nobody is nominated who could become an Egot, so the next possible chance would be 2025. There are a total of 25 people who have won everything needed except a Grammy. They are actress Ellen Burstyn,...

Christopher Nolan has made a career for himself for his unconventional narrative structures of storytelling. His 11 films have ranged from psychological thrillers to science fiction epics to “The Dark Knight” trilogy, and have garnered a total of 36 Academy Award nominations, five of which for Nolan individually. With his latest directed epic “Oppenheimer” breaking box office records and gathering massive awards buzz since its release on July 21 by Universal Pictures, let’s break down Nolan’s five Oscar nominations for three of his movies.
Nolan’s first recognition at the Oscars came for his second feature “Memento,” based on his brother Jonathan Nolan’s short story “Memento Mori,” both released in 2001. The psychological mystery thriller written and directed by Nolan stars Guy Pearce as a man with anterograde amnesia and short-term memory loss as he tries to solve the murder of his wife. Music superstars Adele, Eminem, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are nearing Egot, now just a notch away. All four of them won Emmy Awards on Saturday at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony in downtown Los Angeles.
Adele won for producing the Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) category for “Adele: One Night Only.” Eminem was one of the stars of the Super Bowl halftime show, which prevailed for Best Variety Special (Live). McCartney and Starr were producers on the documentary/nonfiction winner “The Beatles: Get Back.” Each of them has triumphed previously at the Oscars and Grammys, so they only need a Tony Award to reach Egot.

Darius Marder’s experimental “Sound of Metal” — the Oscar favorite for Best Sound — was surprisingly snubbed at the 68th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards for sound editing on Friday, but it rebounded on Saturday to take sound mixing honors at the 57th annual Cas Awards. The sound editors presented a three-way split between Aaron Sorkin’s multi-layered courtroom drama, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (dialogue/Adr), “Greyhound,” the World War II battleship action/adventure (effects/foley), which is an Oscar sound nominee, and Christopher Nolan’s time-inverted “Tenet” (underscore). Pixar’s “Soul,” which took the Golden Reel for animation, is also in the Oscar hunt for sound. However, the other two Oscar nominees — “Mank” and “News of the World” — were completely shut out.
Ironically, the primary reason the Academy consolidated sound editing and mixing into one category this season was due to increased overlap in recent years. However, despite...

“Tenet,” “Eurovision Song Contest,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Greyhound” have won feature-film awards at the Motion Picture Sound Editors Mpse Golden Reel Awards, which took place on Friday evening in a virtual event.
The Mpse divides the art of sound editing into several different categories, with “Tenet” winning for underscore, “Eurovision Song Contest” for music, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” for dialogue/Adr and “Greyhound” for effects/foley.
In the past, the last of those categories has most closely corresponded to the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing — but that Oscar category was merged with the Best Sound Mixing category into a single Best Sound category this year. “Greyhound” is nominated in that category, along with “Soul,” “Mank,” “News of the World” and “Sound of Metal.”

In 2008, the music branch of the Academy caused a stir when it announced that The Dark Knight was disqualified from the Best Original Score race. The reason for this had nothing to do with the use of non-original compositions as it's often the case. Instead, AMPAS had deemed that the picture had too many composers. In total, there were five credited artists – Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard, Alex Gibson, Mel Wesson, and Lorne Balfe. Even though the first two did most of the soundtrack and the remaining three signed affidavits relinquishing their chance at a nod, the Academy didn't budge.
Since then, rules have changed and then changed back again. Still, the presence of collaborative teams on the Academy's lists of nominees remains rare. In the past decade, only The Social Network, Lion, and Her have earned nominations for featuring the credited work of multiple composers. The...

“The Dark Knight Rises” (2012) was the only film in Christopher Nolan‘s Batman trilogy not to receive a single Oscar nomination but despite that it has had a pretty good track record at the awards. By the time of its release four of its actors already had Oscars: Christian Bale (“The Fighter”), Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”), Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”) and Michael Caine (“Hannah and Her Sisters” and “The Cider House Rules”). Then Anne Hathaway won an Oscar for “Les Miserables,” which opened the same year. This year’s Oscars turned out to be pretty good for “The Dark Knight Rises” too, especially for Gary Oldman, the erstwhile Commissioner Gordon who just won Best Actor for “Darkest Hour.” Check out the complete list of Oscar winners here.

The 90th Academy Awards has concluded and I think a lot of movie geeks are happy with the way things played out! I couldn't be more excited to see Guillermo del Toro win Best Director and his film The Shape of Water win Best Picture of the year!
We also saw Gary Oldman win Best Actor, which he definitely deserved! Frances McDormand, took home the Best Actress Award and Sam Rockwell won for Best Supporting Actor for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Then there was Jordan Peele, who won Best Original Screenplay for Get Out, which so freakin' cool!
Personally, the one film that I didn't think should have won was Call Me By Your Name for Best Adapted Screenplay. Molly's Game, Logan, Mudbound, and The Disaster Artist were all better films with better scripts!
Below you'll find a full list of the nominees with the winners bolded. Are you happy with the winners?...

Gregg Landaker, Gary A. Rizzo and Mark Weingarten picked the Best Sound Mixing honour for the film, and Alex Gibson and Richard King took the Best Sound Editing trophy. The film, which has also been written by Nolan, brings the story of Operation Dynamo as it unfolds on land, sea and air. Icarus, which was about doping in Russian sports, and helmed by director Bryan Fogel, was named as the Best Documentary (Feature). Meanwhile, Coco was named as Best Animated Feature Film at the Oscars 2018, and co-director Lee Unkrich dedicated the honour to the people and culture of Mexico, saying "representation matters". Filmmaker James Ivory became the oldest Oscar winner at 89 for his adapted screenplay for Call Me By Your Name. The screenplay of the gay romance movie, directed by Luca Guadagnino, is based on the eponymous novel by Andre Aciman. Jordan Peele won an Oscar for Original Screenplay, with Get Out. Best Supporting Actor Actor Sam Rockwell won his first Oscar in the Best Supporting Actor category for his performance in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. He was up against Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project), Woody Harrelson (Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri), Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water) and Christopher Plummer (All the Money in the World) for the award. Helmed by Martin McDonagh, the film is about a mother who, when the police in her town fail to find a suspect in her daughter's murder, purchases three billboards to call public attention to the unsolved crime. Meanwhile, actor Allison Janney took home her first Oscar in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category for her powerful performance in I, Tonya. She was in the race to win the coveted trophy with Mary J. Blige (Mudbound), Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread), Laurie Metcalfe (Lady Bird) and Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water). Best Actor Gary Oldman won the Best Actor Oscar for Darkest Hour, for his portrayal of Winston Churchill, which involved daily four-hour makeup sessions. For Oldman, it was his second nomination in the Actor in a Leading Role category. He was previously nominated for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in 2011. While accepting the award, Oldman said: "I've lived in America for the longest time, and I am deeply grateful to her for the loves and the friendships I have made and the many wonderful gifts it has given me. My home, my livelihood, my family, and now Oscar." On the other hand, Frances Mcdormand won the Oscar for Best Actress, for her role in Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri. She was given the award for essaying the role of Mildred, a woman with a burning sense of injustice over the police failure to find the killer of her daughter. 60-year-old McDormand pipped, among others, The Post star Meryl Streep, who scored her 21st nomination and the 17th in this category at the Oscars. McDormand left an impact with her acceptance speech after she asked every female nominee in the room to stand up and asked male gatekeepers to ask them about their projects and ideas not just at Oscar after-parties, but in office meetings following awards season. The 90th Annual Academy Awards were held on Sunday night, March 4, hosted for the second year in a row by Jimmy Kimmel. The Emmy winning comedian and host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” impressed with his hosting duties in 2017, but that ceremony is probably best remembered for its twist ending: “La La Land” was announced as the winner for Best Picture, but minutes later it was revealed that the wrong winner had been announced and that “Moonlight” was the rightful victor. Was the 2018 Best Picture outcome just as shocking? Scroll down for our live updating report and analysis of the winners as they happened.
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” was the front-runner for Best Picture going into Oscar night after winning top prizes at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and BAFTAs. But close behind was “The Shape of Water,” the winner at the Producers Guild, Directors Guild and Critics’ Choice Awards.

“Dunkirk” is ahead to win Oscars for Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing, and it’s no wonder since action-packed war movies often do well in audio categories. If the film indeed wins the award for its sound editing, it would additionally make history as Richard King would set a new record for the most wins in that category.
There is currently a six-way tie for the most Sound Editing wins. Ben Burtt, Charles L. Campbell, Per Hallberg, Richard Hymns, Gary Rydstrom and King have three victories apiece, including years when the prize was handed out as a special achievement award and not a competitive Oscar. King previously won his Oscars for “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” (2003), “The Dark Knight” (2008) and “Inception” (2010), and he earned additional nominations for “War of the Worlds” (2005) and “Interstellar” (2014). It was a clear victory for sci-fi sound editing Sunday night at the 65th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards at the Westin Bonaventure. “War for the Planet of the Apes” was the surprise winner for Dialogue/Adr, splitting honors with “Blade Runner 2049,” which grabbed the Effects/Foley prize. The big loser was “Dunkirk” (which won the BAFTA sound award earlier Sunday). However, Christopher Nolan’s World War II survival epic took home the Music Score award and remains the sound editing Oscar favorite.
In addition, “The Greatest Showman,” “Coco,” “Loveless,” and “Jane” earned sound editing awards for Musical, Animation, Foreign Language, and Documentary. The big TV winner was “Game of Thrones” (“The Spoils of War”) for Dialogue/Adr and Effects/Foley. “Dunkirk” is the heavy favorite to win Oscars for Best Sound Editing (for Richard King and Alex Gibson) and Best Sound Mixing (for Gregg Landaker, Gary Rizzo and Mark Weingarten). These two fields are some of the most misunderstood at the Oscars, by audiences, by some voters and, admittedly, by some awards pundits like me. But because war movies like “Dunkirk” give audiences so much to hear — explosions, gunshots, jet engines, dialogue and dramatic music — they tend to win awards in these categories.
Sound mixers record and adjust the levels of different sound elements, while editors assemble those elements, from dialogue to sound effects to sounds they create themselves for the production. Or as our Oscarologist Tim Gray (La Times) put it, “After the sound editor has assembled what the audience hears, the sound mixer determines how they hear it.” Sound experts within the motion picture academy decide who gets nominated at the Oscars,...

The nominations for the 2018 Academy Awards are in and Guillermo del Toro's fantastic film, The Shape of Water, did pretty damn good as it leads the pack with thirteen of the nominations! Those include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay and more. This was one of my favorite movies of the year, so it was great to see it get a lot of love.
Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk ended up with eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. Jordan Peele's Get Out also landed a few nominations including Best Director, which was cool!
As expected, James Franco and his film The Disaster Artist got snubbed amid sexual misconduct allegations surrounding the actor.

Meeting Santa in a mall is a rite of passage for many children, but for some, it could be nerve-wracking. The experience of meeting Saint Nick creeped out one toddler so much he used sign language to call his mother for help, making for one hilarious holiday photo.
When Kerry Spencer became a mother, one of the things she most looked forward to experiencing was the annual visit to the neighborhood Santa Claus for a Christmas photo. If you’ve spotted Team Ico’s The Last Guardian for less than the full retail price at your various local retailers, it’s not an accident – Sony has slashed the price of the whimsical adventure title. Confirming the price cut as a permanent one to Polygon, Sony has wiped $20 off of the asking price for the long-awaited PlayStation 4 exclusive, meaning you can now pick it up at Amazon, GameStop and pretty much everywhere else for the bargain price of $40. While somewhat expected, considering the game’s failure to even make the top five in the UK sales charts during its debut week, it’s no less disappointing to see Sony try and push sales with a price cut so soon after release.
Make no mistake either, The Last Guardian is worthy of each and...

Sandwiched between the launch of Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Titanfall 2 struggled to meet sales expectations right out of the gate, with analysts slashing forecasts by upwards of 30 percent prior to release. As a matter of fact, one firm claimed that long-term sales would be “substantially disappointing,” and that’s despite Respawn’s shooter sequel launching as a multi-platform title.
Electronic Arts is yet to disclose official sales figures just yet, and though that’s unlikely to change anytime soon, Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen touched on the matter while speaking at the Ubs conference in San Francisco, as relayed by GameSpot.
During the speech, Jorgensen revealed that both EA and Respawn are adopting a long-term strategy with Titanfall 2 moving forward, and that “it’s not about the first day of sales or the first week of sales.

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

When Christopher Nolan's divisive science fiction epic "Interstellar" was released, audience feedback included quite a few complaints about the film's sound mix. It seemed like quite a big portion of the film's dialogue were being drowned out by the sound effects and musical score.
Whilst malfunctioning cinema equipment was blamed at first, post-release interviews with the crew members suggested the choice was a deliberate one by those involved in creating the film's sound mix - namely director Chris Nolan and composer Hans Zimmer. Nolan himself then confirmed that the film's sound was mixed in an "unconventional way" and that the dialogue is "sometimes it's mixed slightly underneath the other sound effects or in the other sound effects to emphasize how loud the surrounding noise is."

If you saw Interstellar in theaters and thought it strange that a few pieces of dialogue were drowned out by the sound effects, you.d be valid in your worry. This issue with the mixing has caused quite a stir among moviegoers, but according to the film.s composer, Hans Zimmer, there isn.t actually a problem. During a roundtable discussion for The Hollywood Reporter with fellow film composers Marco Beltrami (The Homesman), Danny Elfman (Big Eyes), John Powell (How To Train Your Dragon 2) and Trent Reznor (Gone Girl), Zimmer was asked about this issue. Though the sound mixing seems to be a widely recognized source of error, the composer replied: You know, one of the things Trent brought up was that we work as a team. For instance, Richard King, our sound designer, Alex Gibson, our music editor, Chris . we are all in this together. And we really...

Yes, another Dark Knight news posting — but this time it’s not just another crazy third film rumor or “Christopher Nolan is still considering a Dark Knight sequel” update. In November, the Executive Committee of the Academy of Motion Pictures music branch ruled that the score for The Dark Knight was disqualified due to a technicality — five names were listed as composers on the music cue sheet for royalty reasons (Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard and three other individuals — music editor Alex Gibson, ambient music designer Mel Wesson and composer Lorne Balfe). But now the Los Angeles Times is reporting (and Variety has since confirmed) that the Motion Picture [...]...

Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard collaborated on the score for The Dark Knight and now both men are being notified their efforts are being disqualified for consideration as Best Score by the executive committee of the Academy music branch. This matches their collaboration and disqualification for Batman Begins in 2005.
Zimmer, Howard, music editor Alex Gibson, ambient music designer Mel Wesson, and composer Lorne Balfe all were listed on the music cue sheet, the document judged by the Academy. They all signed an affidavit stating that the score was primarily the work of Zimmer and Howard but that was not good enough for the Academy. A different document provided to the Academy indicated more than 60%, but less than 70% of the score came directly Zimmer and Howard.

A little more Dark Knight news for you, as the biggest movie of the year tries to bolster its chances for Academy Awards. But we now know it won't win an Oscar for Best Original Score, because AMPAS has disqualified it from contention.
The Academy also disqualified the Batman Begins score by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard three years ago, and it's very particular about its rules for music. Does anyone remember "Come What May" from Moulin Rouge! winning Best Song? Of course not, because AMPAS ruled that since David Baerwald actually wrote it for Romeo + Juliet, even though it was never recorded for that film, it wasn't "original." To me, that's ludicrous, because it's hard to prove that songs are written for a specific movie.
For all we know, Randy Newman wrote that year's winner, "If I Didn't Have You," a long time before Mosnters, Inc. came around...

It's ironic this happened today considering just yesterday I was putting a few of the final touches on the new RopeofSilicon.com that is about to launch very, very soon while I decided to give the ol' Dark Knight score a listen. As it was playing I realized once again, there are a few tracks on that thing that really get your motor running. The opening track, "Why So Serious?", is an excellent starting point but tracks like "I'm Not a Hero" and "Like a Dog Chasing Cars" really catch your ear while listening. Unfortunately, said score has been disqualified by the Academy music branch and won't be in the running for Original Score at the 2009 Oscars. The move mirrors a similar decision disqualifying the score for Batman Begins of which composers Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, also collaborated on. The catch, as reported by Variety, citing "sources inside...
