The eighth installment of the Mission: Impossible film series, titled ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ starring Hollywood heartthrob Tom Cruise, will be released in US theatres on 23rd May 2025 and a week earlier in Indian theatres on 17th May 2025. But did you know that long before Tom Cruise stepped into the shoes of the daredevil agent Ethan Hunt, there was a Mission: Impossible television series bearing the same name? Read on to know all about the series.

Created by Bruce Geller, the first season of the spy action television series Mission: Impossible aired in 1966. It was followed by six more seasons, which concluded in 1973. The basic plot of the show, spanning more than a whopping 170 episodes, revolves around an elite team of secret agents known as the Impossible Missions Force (Imf). They are assigned different missions and have to deal with unethical businessmen,...

Mel Rodriguez Signs With Innovative Artists Entertainment
Image
Exclusive: Innovative Artists Entertainment has signed actor Mel Rodriguez for representation in all areas.

Most recently, Rodriguez was seen recurring on Shonda Rhimes’ Netflix series The Residence as White House engineer Bruce Geller, a deceptively central figure in the show’s murder mystery. The actor is perhaps best known for his role as Todd on Fox’s Emmy-nominated comedy The Last Man on Earth, which ran for four seasons.

Rodriguez first came to prominence for his Critics Choice-nominated performance on HBO’s Getting On, alongside Laurie Metcalf and Niecy Nash. He was a series regular on the Netflix animated series Carol & The End of the World, as well as Showtime’s On Becoming a God in Central Florida, and appeared as Marco Pasternak on AMC’s Better Call Saul.

In film, Rodriguez’s credits include MGM/UA’s Overboard, as well as Fat, writer-director Mark Phinney’s film in which he stars as Ken,...

The Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Trailer Brings Every Movie Together (And Gives Ethan Hunt An Aircraft Carrier)
Image
Is there a more apt name for a franchise than "Mission: Impossible?" While there are numerous film properties that are (impressively) still going after nearly 30 years or more, there are far fewer that've maintained a consistent level of overall quality during that period, let alone kept a single star at the helm with each installment. This longevity can be chalked up to several factors: the template set by the original Bruce Geller 1966-1973 TV series, the various directors who've been invited to play in the films' sandbox, and most of all, the tenacity of Tom Cruise, who's proven his dedication to the franchise time and again, demonstrating his craft and risking his life with each successive entry.

Up until recently, however, the "Mission: Impossible" films have enjoyed a rather loose continuity, with a one-shot structure not only mimicking the original TV show but also best serving the revolving door of...

‘The Residence’ Showrunner on That Killer Reveal, Who Was Almost the Culprit and Where the Murder Mystery Could Go Next
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from the season one finale of Netflix’s The Residence.]

Sometimes it only takes a blink to tell a detective everything — or at least it does for Uzo Aduba’s Cordelia Cupp and Randall Park’s Edwin Park in the finale of Netflix’s The Residence.

Throughout the eight-episode Netflix series, the murder mystery is maintained until the very end, as the audience eagerly waited to learn who killed White House chief usher A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito). Though red herrings and multiple suspects appeared to be at fault for the murder — including housekeeper Elsyie Chayle (Julieth Restrepo), engineer Bruce Geller (Mel Rodriguez) and even the rising White House assistant usher Jasmine (Susan Kelechi Watson) — the actual killer was revealed in the season finale to be (spoiler alert!) Lilly Schumacher (Molly Griggs), the White House Social Secretary.

While taking her likely suspects on a tour of the events of the murder, Aduba’s Cordelia assessed the...

‘The Residence’ Creator on Casting Al Franken (but Not Hugh Jackman!), a Possible Season 2 and Losing Andre Braugher: ‘We All Loved Him and He Loved the Show’
Image
Spoiler Alert: This interview contains major spoilers from “The Residence,” now streaming on Netflix.

Before writing a single word of Netflix’s latest murder mystery “The Residence,” creator Paul William Davies knew exactly who the killer and the victim would be.

Over the course of eight episodes, the new screwball whodunit series — inspired by Kate Andersen Brower’s non-fiction book “The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House” — unraveled the mystery surrounding the demise of White House Chief Usher A.B. Wynter on the night of an Australian state dinner at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

After conducting a whirlwind investigation on the night of the murder, during which she interviewed 157 suspects and potential witnesses to the crime and its attempted cover-up, Detective Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba) returns to the White House, where she gives all of her remaining persons of interest a tour of the house while explaining the many...

‘The Residence’ Ending Explained: Who Is the Killer?
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers for “The Residence” Episode 8.

“The Residence” followed as ace detective Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba) put together the seemingly endless thread of clues for the murder of White House chief usher A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito).

Episode 1 saw as Cordelia ruled out the death being a suicide, after quickly realizing that A.B.’s wrists had been cut, but there was no knife. She also deduced that he had been moved into the Game Room, where the body had been found. Through the six episodes, Cordelia and FBI agent Edwin Park (Randall Park) worked together to interview the many staffers and guests at the White House to find the killer — as a Senate Committee assembled months after the death also looked into the facts of the controversial case.

By Episode 8, Cordelia met with the Senate Committee for the first time to tell her side of the story,...

Who Killed Ab in The Residence? The Finale Ending Explained by Cast and Creator
Image
The Residencemaintains its murder mystery until the very end. As all the major players settle into the Yellow Oval Room, there are still multiple suspects in the murder of A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito): the dubious “third man” Patrick Doumbe (Timothy Hornor), engineer Bruce Geller (Mel Rodriguez), and housekeeper Elsyie Chayle (Julieth Restrepo) all seem to be likely candidates.

But, the true culprit is someone else entirely. Lead detective Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba) reveals the killer is Lilly Schumacher (Molly Griggs), the White House social secretary. The woman who hated the White House murdered the person who most embodied its values. Griggs was thrilled to “push the boundaries” with Lilly.

“Getting to crawl into Lilly’s demented head was really fun,” the actor says. “It was really satisfying to make her as kooky as possible. Then it’s actually quite scary when you see how calculated she can be...

How Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation Pays Homage To The Original Series' Pilot Episode
Image
The "Mission: Impossible" movie franchise has been going on for close to 30 years now, and with the seven films in the property soon to become eight at the time of writing (with the release of this summer's "The Final Reckoning"), there's more than enough to catch up on prior to May. When it comes to "Mission: Impossible" rankings and recaps, you hardly ever see a key entry being included at all: the original TV series that kicked off the entire thing (in its normal episodic or even movie-length form). That series ran for a whopping seven seasons and 171 episodes from 1966-1973, and that's not even counting the revival series from 1988, which lasted 2 seasons on its own. Clearly, there are a ton of impossible missions that precede the film series, so why aren't they discussed very often?

The uninformed answer is that the films have no connection to the TV series,...

‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ Teaser: Everything Tom Cruise Has Done Amounts to This
Image
It’s been a turbulent flight getting here, but we’ve finally got the trailer for “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” (fka “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part Two” and colloquially known as “Mission: Impossible 8”). Thank goodness Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) can still sprint.

In “M:i 8,” Hunt needs his team to trust him “one last time.“

In the trailer, which is shown in ultra wide format, we see Hunt — as one has come to expect — running very fast. It also features footage of the sunken submarine that kicks off the events of “Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning,” as well as a callback to the first film that even many who haven’t seen it are more than likely familiar with. As previously teased, the big stunt for this entry will involve Cruise hanging outside of a functioning 1930s biplane, shots of which are also seen in the teaser.

The...

How Lucille Ball Saved the ‘Mission: Impossible’ Franchise
Image
We’re just a few months away from the release of Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, which is supposedly the last installment in the film series that began as a spy thriller about stealing floppy discs, then somehow morphed into Tom Cruise’s big budget take on Jackass.

But we would have never gotten any joy out of seeing Cruise routinely endanger his life for our amusement if not for the actions of one of the most famous comedic performers of all-time: Lucille Ball.

Ball’s production company Desilu produced a number of famous TV shows, including Star Trek and the original Mission: Impossible series. And Ball didn’t simply greenlight the pitch and walk away either. As one of the show’s stars, Barbara Bain, revealed in an interview, Lucy had the “final word on the casting.”

Bain had to meet with Ball after others became “concerned” about...

10 Movie Franchises That Bounced Back After A Disappointing Second Film
Image
One of the most consistent trends for franchises is the disappointing sequel to the first movie. Of course, there are movie franchises where each successive movie is better than its predecessor, but that's considerably rarer. However, a less consistent trend is the worst movie sequels of all time being followed by better third movies that allow franchises to bounce back. Some of these terrible sequels surprisingly don't kill their franchises, buoyed by a better follow-up that revitalized people's faith and interest in the series.

Movie franchises that rebounded after a disappointing sequel often have a pattern in the creative choices. The disappointing sequel usually fails to live up to the standards of the original because creators are trying to recapture the magic of the original film by treating the first movie as a blueprint. The third movie on which the franchise's future hinges is often where people take the biggest risks,...

‘Mission: Impossible 8’ Finally Gets a Title — and a Teaser Trailer
Image
Good things come to those who wait, and we’ve been waiting a long, long time for “Mission: Impossible 8” to get a title. Well, we got that and more on Monday. (Ethan Hunt is an Army alum — Happy Veterans Day to all!) If you need a catch up on the previous films, here’s IndieWire’s ranking of the “Mission: Impossible” movies.

In the new film’s teaser trailer, Hunt (Tom Cruise) can be seen sprinting through a variety of landscapes and hardscapes — you simply do not mess with the Cruise formula. At one point, Hunt is running after an airplane that he presumably catches. At another he’s knife-fighting in his underwear; if you weren’t already reminded, from him rappelling into the Paris Olympics Closing Ceremony, Tom Cruise is in his 60s.

“Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” will be released in theaters on May 23, 2025. As the teaser trailer,...

Every Henry Cavill Movie That's Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, Ranked
Image
There's nothing more impressive than a spotless filmography, and while directors and producers have huge amounts of control over the artistic products they create, the same can't be said about every person that makes up the cast and crew. Actors, in particular, can't carry a film all alone and, therefore, can't be blamed if the final product is less than adequate. An actor can put forth an Oscar-worthy performance every time they step on screen, but it doesn't matter if the rest of the film isn't at the same level of quality.

Even though he is one of the premier stars of his generation, Henry Cavill has struggled to attach himself to critically acclaimed projects despite brilliant performances. It's unclear who is at fault in this situation. Some fans point the finger at his agent or the directors of the critically panned films, while others put the blame directly on Cavill.

Filming began in March 2022, and despite being over a year ahead of the start, the film was halted due to the SAG-AFTRA strike in July 2023. Production then resumed in March 2024 but faced more delays due to a malfunction with a submarine. After nearly two years in production, the budget for Misson: Impossible 8 was always going to be high, but just how high could spell disaster for Tom Cruise's latest mission.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Mission: Impossible 8 production budget is approaching $400 million. While no exact number was given, if the budget is $400 million, that would make Mission: Impossible 8 the fourth most expensive movie ever behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($447 million), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom...

Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible 8 is trending in the media, especially because of its ballooning budget. It has now gone north of $300 million. Christopher McQuarrie will reportedly direct the last movie in the franchise. Scroll below for more.

The action spy films are based on the 1966 TV series created by Bruce Geller. The first film in the series came out in 1996, establishing Tom as an action star and making him a global sensation. It is one of the most popular franchises that Tom has led. They have grossed around $4.09 billion worldwide. Unfortunately, Mi 7, released in 2023, had an underwhelming performance at the box office. It suffered because of the films Barbie and Oppenheimer. They overshadowed every film, even Cruise’s Biggie. It was the first film in the series to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.

Tom Cruise is in Denial Over Getting Older and Could Be Risking His Life Because of It
Image
It wont come as too big a surprise to some, but Tom Cruise is now being accused of having a crazy invincibility complex. Its true that the 62-year-old actor exquisitely continues to do his own stunts, as the Hollywood A-lister was clearly spotted performing some wicked aerial work back in July, while shooting next summers highly anticipated Mission: Impossible 8.

However, an unnamed source has voiced their opinion in the press and is worried that Cruise isnt taking into account his age, to say nothing of all the variables that could go wrong during those jaw-dropping daredevil stunts the Oscar nominee continues to mesmerize audiences with. The film source told RadarOnline:

Toms got this crazy invincibility complex and truly believes hes a superior human being wholl be able to pull off these stunts well into his senior years. The reality is theres always the chance something could go horribly wrong.

Tom Cruise's Shocking Olympics Paycheck Happened for One Reason
Image
Tom Cruises appearance at the 2024 Olympics closing ceremony became one of the big talking points of the event, with the actor making a special and dramatic appearance to collect the Olympic flag and deliver it to its next destination of Los Angeles. While the production, which included pre-recorded footage of Cruise leaving Paris by plane and skydiving down to the Hollywood sign, seemed like the kind of big budget stunt that the actors Mission: Impossible movies have become known for, Cruise himself has a surprising pay packet for his appearance. Absolutely nothing.

While Cruise has been known as one of the highest paid actors in the business, it seems that he had one simple condition to do the whole thing for free he wanted to do his own stunts. This is hardly surprising considering the actors history of throwing himself off buildings, mountains, out of planes, and fighting on top of moving vehicles.

Tom Cruise Risks His Life in New Look at Mission: Impossible 8 Aerial Stunt
Image
Hollywood icon Tom Cruise is back to doing what he does best risking his life for our entertainment as the actor takes to skies for the latest Mission: Impossible 8 stunt. As revealed in new images from the filming of the action movie sequel, the next Mission: Impossible will find Cruise hanging from an upside-down plane, seemingly with no parachute, as he once again fights to save the world. The images show Cruise holding on for dear life as the small biplane tips upside down and leaves the action superstar dangling. A second pilot can be seen sporting a greenscreen suit, which suggests that they will be digitally removed for the sequence and Ethan Hunt will find himself alone and wondering exactly how he got into another death-defying situation.

‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ Review: Tom Cruise & Co. Take Excitement & Suspense To New Level
Image
They should call it Mission: Exceptional. Given that this is a series that began on television 57 years ago and over the past 27 years has delivered seven big feature films, no one would be terribly surprised if it were to begin flagging a bit. But Tom Cruise & Co. will have none of that; to the contrary, this new entry, officially called Dead Reckoning Part One, ramps up the excitement and sheer flat-out impressiveness to a new level, with the absolute final piece of the puzzle already shot and due to open in a year’s time.

Few films have come into existence that display so much confidence and conviction in what they’re doing and can follow through with their ideas onscreen virtually without regard to budgetary constraints. To put things in perspective, the normal budget for a one-hour episode of M:i on television in the late 1960s was $225,000, which...

Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
How to Watch the ‘Mission: Impossible’ Movies in Order
Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Since 1996, Tom Cruise has been the heart of the “Mission: Impossible” film series, thrilling audiences as Ethan Hunt, the Imf agent constantly plunged into increasingly dangerous scenarios. And he’s not about to stop anytime soon – “Mission: Impossible, Dead Reckoning, Part One,” the seventh film in the franchise, is due out this July, while “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part Two” will be unleashed next June.

If, somehow, you’ve never seen any of the “Mission: Impossible” movies, they began in 1996 with the Brian De Palma-directed original, an adaptation of the popular, Bruce Geller-created spy series that ran from 1966 to 1973 for 172 episodes and was revived briefly in the late 1980s (that version only ran for two seasons and 35 episodes). Many of the hallmarks of the television series made it into the movie – the mission briefing that would “self-destruct” at the end of the message, the idea of a team of highly trained specialists,...
