Disco icon Gloria Gaynor has revealed in a recent interview that she doesn’t identify as a feminist.

“The biggest misconception about me? Hmm,” she told Metro. “It may be dangerous to say this, but… that I’m a feminist.”

In the interview, Gaynor explained that her relationships with the men in her life inform her rejection of the feminist label. “People say it to me, ‘And since you’re a feminist…’ Erm, no. Not really. I love men… I grew up with five brothers, and I love men.”

She continued, “I love men who know who they are and are strong enough to take their place, but also strong enough to recognize a woman’s strengths and who are able to allow her to exercise those strengths and realize that we are to be partners and not opponents.”

Kylie Minogue ‘Tension II’ Review: Even More Deliciously Empty-Calorie Dance-Pop
Image
If Kylie Minogue’s Tension generated its, well, tension from its fluctuations between propulsive electro-pop and breezy synth-pop, the album’s sequel, Tension II, fully commits to the former. “Padam Padam” is a direct influence here, with the slinky, undulating synths and robotic vocal hooks of tracks like “Kiss Bang Bang” and “Hello,” an outtake from the original sessions, clearly indebted to that sleeper hit from Tension.

The new album, which could have easily been called More Tension, is Minogue’s most shamelessly ingratiating collection of dance-pop songs since 2010’s Aphrodite—maybe even 2001’s Fever. The Aussie pop singer has, admirably, never before tried to replicate that album’s global smash, “Can’t Get You Out of My Head,” but the frothy “Diamonds,” with its unrelenting bassline and earworm vocable, makes a valiant attempt. Elsewhere, the rollicking bass and string sample of “Taboo” nods to another infectious club anthem from the...

Roush Review: A ‘Disco’ Documentary You Can Dance To
Image
As you might expect for a documentary titled Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution, this vibrant three-part account of the rise and fall of the disco era has a great beat and you can dance to it. Dancing being the motivating factor that fueled the genre’s birth in the early 1970s in abandoned New York City warehouses and underground clubs. In these havens, marginalized people found community within walls of sound and pulsating tempos, allowing free expression of Black pride, women’s newfound liberation and LGBTQ+ acceptance. “It’s the great equalizer,” explains DJ/producer Honey Dijon, reflecting fondly on a movement that became a phenomenon. “In the late ’70s, the outsider became the insider,” says photographer Bill Bernstein, who captured the scene in images as club DJs created cult hits that crossed over to the mainstream, earning radio play for heretofore overlooked Black artists. “Disco divas” including Donna Summer and Gloria Gaynor became superstars,...

The Voice Recap: Season 25 Premiere Serves Up an All-You-Can-Seat Buffet
Image
Monday’s Season 25 premiere of The Voice answered a question that had been left dangling since it was announced that Dan + Shay would be joining returnees John Legend, Chance the Rapper and Reba McEntire on the coaching panel: Would four-chair turns still be called four-chair turns… or five-, since technically both Dan and Shay would have seats?

The answer — and maybe this was only of such keen interest to Voice recappers — was that four-chair turns would remain four-chair turns (perhaps since the new coaches’ dual seat swivels as one). And right off the bat, a four-chair turn was what we got.

Image
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert premiered to a rapturous, midnight-screening reception at Cannes on May 15, 1994. The tart, feel-good comedy follows a trio of Sydney drag queens — Terrence Stamp, Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce — who travel by bus (that’s Priscilla) to a gig in the Outback, finding their way into hijinks and eye-popping outfits along the way. The film became a crossover sensation and even won an Oscar for its costumes (this despite having a costume budget of approximately $5,000). Its writer-director Stephan Elliott joins THR‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast this week to reveal all about this making of the comedy classic on the cusp of its 30th birthday. Here are five facinating takeaways from the episode:

Guy Pearce Was Desperate to Shed his Soap Opera Image

Pearce was 26 and well-known to Australian and U.K. audiences at the time as the star of Neighbors, the popular soap,...

Gloria Gaynor: I Will Survive Review: Illuminating Portrait of a Music Legend and Her Incredible Resilience
Image
Gloria Gaynor's documentary is a moving story about her personal and career highs and lows, and her mission to produce a genre-switching comeback with her Gospel album Testimony. Gaynor's resilience, both in her personal life and as an artist, is showcased throughout the film, highlighting her ability to overcome obstacles and reinvent herself. The documentary offers a captivating look behind the scenes of the artistic process, showcasing the friendships, bonds, and faith that have played a vital role in Gaynor's journey.

Early on in Gloria Gaynor: I Will Survive, a music industry executive says: “What am I going to do with a seventy-something artist at an end-of-career genre switch?” That question becomes the significant thread weaving itself into a larger tapestry in Betsy Schechter’s moving music documentary about disco queen Gloria Gaynor.

This is a tale about Gaynor's personal and career highs and lows, and her mission...

Black Box Diaries (2024)
Sundance Review: Black Box Diaries is an Autobiographical Investigation of Sexual Assault
Black Box Diaries (2024)
In the middle of Black Box Diaries, journalist Shiori Ito’s debut documentary, Ito grins at the camera as she strolls through downtown Tokyo on the day of her book launch. It’s October 18, 2017. The New York Times broke the Harvey Weinstein news two weeks ago. Alyssa Milano popularized the hashtag #MeToo two days ago. Ito, fresh-faced and 28, happily recounts these events to the camera. The world may finally be ready to listen to her.

It’s hard to imagine a time before the #MeToo genie was let out of its bottle, but that’s what Ito asks of viewers as they journey back with her to 2015, when she says she was raped by a senior journalist with connections to then-president Shinzo Abe. Through an incredible amount of personal documentation––primarily videos, audio recordings, and journal entries––she grants viewers unprecedented access into her experience as a woman seeking justice for sex crimes in Japan.

Gloria Gaynor Shares How 'I Will Survive' Almost Didn't Become a Hit
Image
The late, great Aretha Franklin once said: “Music does a lot of things for a lot of people. It's transporting, for sure. It can take you right back, years back, to the very moment certain things happened in your life. It's uplifting, it's encouraging, it's strengthening.”

It surely has been for Gloria Gaynor. The Grammy-winner singer is the subject of director Betsy Schechter’s compelling new documentary Gloria Gaynor: I Will Survive. The outing, which became an Audience Favorite at the recent Palm Springs International Film Festival, tracks the disco diva’s legacy, which took flight nearly five decades ago upon the release of her chart-topping disco hit "I Will Survive" in 1978. That song, which has sold more than 14 million copies to date, became the quintessential anthem for jilted lovers and anybody moving through life’s most pressing challenges.

Gaynor opens up about her own troubles in the documentary — from...

She told the crowd, “It’s so great to be back in New York. You have no idea. The enthusiasm, the joy, it’s just coming out of my pores. It’s amazing.”

The Celebration Tour faced setbacks when Madonna, 65, was hospitalized earlier in the year due to a severe bacterial infection, which led to the postponement of her North American dates.

Her joy at being back on stage was palpable.

At one of the most poignant moments, Madonna, guitar in hand, said, “It’s a miracle that I’m alive…I feel like...

Will Benson Forever: Celebrating 25 Years of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer
Image
When people think of Jim Gillespie’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, they usually consider it a solid slasher. It certainly had an engaging lead cast—Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe—and a script from Scream creator himself, Kevin Williamson. It even spawned an Amazon Prime spinoff series and is being featured as part of a “High School Horror” category on the Criterion Channel.

But that’s not the film this article is about. This is about the 1998 sequel that has a less positive reputation: Danny Cannon’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which brought back Hewitt and Prinze Jr., but not Gillespie and Williamson. A lot of people tend to think of it as a lesser follow-up that is best left forgotten.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of I Still Know, which is even getting a...
