While Francis Coppola plans to set cinema alight in 2024 with his final epic Megalopolis, the Oscar-winner will begin the year with a revisit of one his most misunderstood efforts, One From The Heart. That’s the 1981 picture that Coppola threw himself into so hard, creatively and financially, that his American Zoetrope had to declare bankruptcy when it failed to draw audiences. It took Coppola years to build back his fortune with film hits and a win empire, to the current situation where he was able to self finance the $100 million+ Megalopolis.

If all you knew about Francis Ford Coppola’s epic-scale 1982 musical “One from the Heart” was that it’s reportedly “brain food” for the “Joker” sequel “Folie à Deux”, you might think it was more successful. Coppola’s first film after a decade-long run that included two “Godfathers,” “Apocalypse Now,” and “The Conversation” is a nostalgic musical about two ordinary people trying to rekindle their romance on the outskirts of Las Vegas.
A kitsch throwback in the vein of “New York, New York,” it was an even bigger disaster, and ultimately more ruinous for its director. Costing nearly twice its initial $15 million budget (admittedly not a terrible ratio for Coppola), it grossed only $8 million. Within 18 months, Coppola’s studio was bankrupt and, by 1992, he’d filed for a third time.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie”(starring Margot Robbie as the titular doll) is, justifiably, capturing the cultural zeitgeist.
The movie itself is wonderful – a subversive, silly and surprisingly moving. Whatever you thought a “Barbie” movie would be, this isn’t it. There is no egregious product placements (despite almost every product imaginable in our world having a “Barbie” tie-ins) or feelings of gross consumerism. Instead, it’s a lovely tale about feminism and the differences between an idealized world created, in part, by the dreams of young women, and the cruel reality of the world we actually inhabit.
“Barbie” gives you such a buzz, in fact, that you’re probably looking for more things like it. We’ve compiled five movies that are, at the very least, “Barbie”-ish, and ones that we think you’ll probably enjoy.
Note: These are all movies that were not a part of Greta Gerwig...

CMT’s Artists of the Year special honored relative upstarts like Cody Johnson, Carly Pearce, and Lainey Wilson earlier this week in Nashville, but it was Alan Jackson, the show’s Artist of a Lifetime recipient, who showed them all how it was done.
Jackson, a Country Music Hall of Fame member, closed out the evening with a spirited performance of his Southern party anthem “Chattahoochee.” Introduced by Chris Stapleton and punctuated by Jackson’s signature vocal tics and sprightly fiddle, the rendition had his fellow honorees on their feet.

Carrie Underwood is the first woman nominated for Entertainer of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards since, well, the last time she was nominated in 2017. Will she win? She has the potential to set a new record if she does, but she also had a chance to take top honors last fall at the Country Music Association Awards, only for them to leave her stranded.
Underwood has won Entertainer of the Year twice at the Acm Awards (2009-2010). Those victories were followed by back-to-back wins for Taylor Swift (2011-2012), which makes them the only women ever to win that prize multiple times. So if Underwood wins again she will stand alone as the only woman with three Entertainer of the Year titles. But Underwood and Swift’s victories all came when fans decided the top category. In 2016 the academy went back to picking the winner, and it...

As a young, aspiring “girl singer” arriving in Nashville in the early Sixties, Loretta Lynn found a mentor in established artist Patsy Cline. Like Cline, Lynn was signed to Decca Records, produced by Owen Bradley, and a regular performer on the Grand Ole Opry. She may have landed in Music City a naïve Kentucky coal miner’s daughter, but she ended the decade as the reigning queen of country music.
Cline, however, would not live long enough to share in her friend’s greatest success. Fifty-seven years ago today, on the night of March 5th,...

The 2020 Country Music Hall of Fame inductees will be announced in just a few weeks. Which two country superstars will be selected this year for an induction ceremony slated for next October? Could this finally be the year for Tanya Tucker, who just won her first ever Grammy Awards after a career beginning back in the 1970s? Or will it be a more recent artist now eligible, such as Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw or Shania Twain?

Producer, songwriter, music publisher, filmmaker, visionary: Cowboy Jack Clement was all of these, but, perhaps first and foremost, the late Country Music Hall of Fame member was, throughout his lifetime, a devoted friend to countless fellow musicians. On Tuesday, during an afternoon ceremony at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Clement’s legacy was honored with the donation of his Gibson J-200 guitar to the museum’s permanent collection.

“Play our f-ckin’ records. Please and thank you.”
So read the inside of Jennifer Nettles’ cape on the Cma Awards red carpet, while the back of the Sugarland singer’s suit jacket bore the words “equal play.” Early in the evening, it seemed as if the sartorial statement may indicate a more outspoken tone than in CMAs past. As the night went on, however, it was clear that wasn’t the case.

Halsey is increasingly proving herself a woman for all seasons in her varied TV appearances and awards show collaborations, and Wednesday’s Cma Awards telecast was no exception, as she ingratiated herself into the country vocal trio Lady Antebellum for some flawless four-part harmony on a medley of two of their respective hits.
She and Lady A’s two lead singers, Hillary Scott and Charles Kelley, first traded lines on the group’s recent “What If I Never Get Over You” — a lovelorn ballad in the tradition of their Grammy-winning “Need You Now” — before segueing into the gravity of Halsey’s own “Graveyard.” Lady A’s rhetorical question “What if time doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do?” proved an apt cross-genre match for Halsey’s declaration that “it’s crazy when the thing you love the most is the detriment.”

Carrie Underwood, Dolly Parton, and Reba McEntire opened the 53rd annual Cma Awards with their rendition of “Those Memories of You,” a song that Parton originally recorded with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris for their 1987 Trio album.
Following the easygoing rendition, the co-hosts’ trio quickly grew in number as Tanya Tucker, Crystal Gayle, Martina McBride, Terri Clark, Sara Evans, Gretchen Wilson, Jennifer Nettles, Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman, and the Highwomen made their way onstage to perform. As country singers go, Crystal Gayle has long been a sparkling diamond in a rhinestone world. While the singer’s recently released You Don’t Know Me beautifully showcases her elegant, middle-of-the-road vocal delivery — a quality that led her to become one of the most successful crossover artists of the late Seventies — the record also pays homage to Gayle’s deep, abiding connection to vintage country music.

“There’s an angel missing in heaven and his name is Allen Reynolds,” Garth Brooks told author Patsi Bale Cox in 1990. In the early Nineties, Brooks, with Reynolds as his producer, was on one of the hottest streaks in country-music history, topping the charts, earning dozens of industry honors, and selling tens of millions of records. But in spite of Brooks’ assertion, Reynolds didn’t just suddenly appear out of the ether. He had been toiling in his own Music Row studio for a couple of decades, and was also...

Toby Keith follows up the poignant ballad “Don’t Let the Old Man In” with a raucous blast of country-music pride. “That’s Country Bro” is a classic list song, but instead of the usual run-through of rural imagery (trucks, bonfires and coolers), Keith ticks off a Hall of Fame-worthy roster of country singers.
Jimmie Rodgers, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Roy Acuff, Johnny Horton, Bill Monroe, Woody Guthrie and Bob Wills all get shout-outs in the first 18 seconds, followed by Kitty Wells, Jimmy Dean, Hank Snow and even Spade Cooley.

For the finale of the Loretta Lynn birthday concert in Nashville on Monday night, the majority of the all-star cast returned to the stage to sing “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” a motley crew of Tanya Tucker, Brandi Carlile and Dennis Quaid all gathered around the guest of honor. It was a tenuous moment, with the soon-to-be 87-year-old Lynn emphatically shaking off her sister Crystal Gayle’s overture for her to sing her signature song. “I don’t wanna,” Lynn said.
But then, at the start of the second verse, Lynn seized the moment.
