Many baseball fans blame him for costing the Baltimore Orioles the 1996
American League pennant, due to a call he made in the Championship
Series awarding a New York Yankees hitter a home run after a young fan
had reached over the outfield wall and caught a ball headed for an
Orioles outfielder's glove. The Orioles went on to lose the series to
the Yankees.
An American League umpire from 1975 to 1999, he worked in four World
Series (1981, 1984, 1989, 1998) and two All-Star Games (1980, 1992).
