Keira Knightley as Sally Alexander in Philippa Lowthorpe’s Misbehaviour: “I had the most wonderful costume designer, Charlotte Walter …”
Misbehaviour, screenplay by Gaby Chiappe and Rebecca Frayn, is Philippa Lowthorpe’s take on the 1970 Miss World pageant, staged at London’s Royal Albert Hall, hosted by Bob Hope (Greg Kinnear) and the protests led by the newly created Women’s Liberation Front with Keira Knightley as Sally Alexander and Jessie Buckley as Jo Robinson. Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Miss Grenada, Jennifer Hosten; Emma Corrin is Miss South Africa, Jillian Jessup; Loreece Harrison is Miss Africa South, Pearl Jansen; Clara Rosager is Miss Sweden Marjorie Johansson, and Suki Waterhouse is Miss United States, Sandra Wolsfeld. Pageant organisers Eric and Julia Morley are played by Rhys Ifans and Keeley Hawes. Lesley Manville gives Bob Hope’s long-suffering wife Dolores a potent mix of resignation and spite.

Not everyone in Philippa Lowthorpe’s “Misbehaviour” has signed up for the revolution. Wide-ranging to a fault, the filmmaker’s multi-faceted look at the 1970 Miss World beauty pageant weaves its tale from the perspectives of a litany of players involved with what turned into a culture-shifting protest. It’s not just the women’s libbers on offer here or an assortment of conflicted competitors, it’s also the pageant brass, various members of the press corps covering the event — hell, even special guest Bob Hope gets his own arc. While Rebecca Frayn and Gaby Chiappe’s script works hard to give all of its players dimension,
And yet even that doesn’t stop the film’s many (many) stars from shining on occasion, including both Keira Knightley and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as seeming adversaries who might have more in common than meets the eye, plus a radical Jessie Buckley and a...

In 1970, the Miss World competition took place in London, hosted by US comedy legend, Bob Hope. At the time, Miss World was the most-watched TV show on the planet with over 100 million viewers.
Claiming that beauty competitions demeaned women, the newly formed Women’s Liberation Movement achieved overnight fame by invading the stage and disrupting the live broadcast of the competition. Not only that, when the show resumed, the result caused uproar:
the winner was not the Swedish favourite but Miss Grenada, the first black woman to be crowned Miss World. In a matter of hours, a global audience had witnessed the patriarchy driven from the stage and the Western ideal of beauty turned on its head.

Does anyone still watch televised beauty pageants? Some must do: The likes of Miss America and Miss World presumably aren’t being broadcast to a global audience of ghosts, whatever their declining presence in the popular imagination. Yet for years now, the pageant industry has felt like a dead woman walking and waving, steadily losing TV ratings and youth appeal, however many concessions it makes to more progressive standards of femininity: Banning the swimsuit round might help, but something larger is being denuded anyway. A bouncy fact-based Britcom in the “Made in Dagenham” vein, Philippa Lowthorpe’s “Misbehaviour” marks the point at which the worm turned. Revisiting the protest-blighted 1970 Miss World contest from the alternating perspective of participants and opposing activists, it’s cheery, easy comfort viewing, but for all its gaudy, kitschtastic period trappings, there’s little nostalgia underpinning it.

The Lady
Directed by Luc Besson
Written by Rebecca Frayn
France, U.K., 2011
Actress Michelle Yeoh has come a long, long way in her career as an international star. That is not to say that her beginnings were paltry when compared to the status she has now attained, only that her filmmography spans a great many genres, genres that not always highlight similar skills from its actors. Supercop and Supercop 2, anyone? Then came along The Tai Chi Master, which co-starred Jet Li. At the turn of the millennium, there was the international sensation Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which saw her popularity sore through the roof on the international market (a leading lady role in the 007 adventure Tomorrow Never Dies did not hurt either). Finally, with Luc Besson’s The Lady, Yeoh gets her chance to star in a political biopic of rather epic proportions, the sort of film than...

Chicago – I love every decision made by the great Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis in Luc Besson’s historical biopic “The Lady” and yet I cannot recommend the film. It is a wild understatement to call the film conventional and those who did not know that it was from the director of such personality-heavy films as “La Femme Nikita” and “The Fifth Element” would never guess that the man behind it was anything more than a director for hire. To be fair, Besson does draw the best out of his two leads but “The Lady” is a film about an extraordinary woman. So why is it such an ordinary film?
Yeoh plays the legendary peacemaker, leader, and Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, a woman who returned to Burma to care for her ailing mother at the same time that her homeland was undergoing remarkable upheaval. Rebels had...

How have there been so many previews for The Lady at this point? The movie doesn’t hit for almost another three months, but we’ve seen a teaser and two trailers; we won’t even get that many looks at The Dark Knight Rises by the time that one hits theaters. The latest trailer, which comes to us from Apple, isn’t any different from what’s been seen multiple times over — which is to say that I’m not terribly impressed by anything Luc Besson is selling us here. Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis still look nice in their respective roles, if that means anything to you (it should), while I’m also digging the cinematography and expansive, varied locations. Otherwise, this looks like TV movie-level material from a guy who should’ve stuck to dangerous women and killer weapons.

Many film buffs would argue that Luc Besson hasn’t directed a truly diverting film since his dippy 1997 sci-fi curio The Fifth Element, instead fashioning himself recently as a jack-of-all-trades, directing animation (Arthur and the Invisibles) and fanciful adventure (The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec), as well as producing countless mindlessly entertaining action films, such as The Transporter, District B13 and Taken. Besson, apparently ever keen to stretch himself, tackles a straight-faced drama this time with The Lady, and the extravagant director has never seemed more out of his depth.
Besson’s film attempts to summarise the attempts of one woman, Aung San Suu Kyi (Michelle Yeoh) to bring democracy to Burma, which is captivated by an oppressive and violent military regime. From her early beginnings as the lowly daughter of the revolutionary Aung San, Kyi leaves to England where she finds a loving husband, Michael...

Though early festival screenings of French director Luc Besson's new biopic, The Lady, have been met with mostly lukewarm reactions, Michelle Yeoh's performance as Burmese political leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been generating considerable Oscar buzz in advance of the movie's theatrical debut.
Written by Rebecca Frayn, The Lady is based on the true story of Aung San Suu Kyi's relentless non-violent campaign for democracy in Burma and her undying love for her British husband, Michael Aris (David Thewlis), who she was only able to see five times during the last ten years of his life because of his inability to return to Burma and her fear that she would not be allowed to return if she left the country to visit him in England. To see what the buzz is all about, check out two dramatic new preview clips from the movie.

HeyUGuys is very proud to be partnering with Cinémoi for our coverage of the Doha Tribeca Film Festival.
Luc Besson’s The Lady closed the festival and Julien Planté brings us his review.
“Freedom from fear”. Everything is there. This is the title of Aung San Suu Kyi’s speech in 1990 and the story of Luc Besson’s new movie, The Lady. This film, which closed the 3rd Doha Tribeca Film Festival on the 29th October, is arguably his best yet.
Luc Besson has a habit of falling in love with his characters, sometimes even his actresses. We saw it with Nikita (Anne Parillaud), Angel-a (Rie Rasmussen), Leeloo and Joan of Arc (Milla Jovovich), and even more recently with Adèle Blanc-Sec (Louise Bourgoin). Here, however, he falls in love with a real person, a strong individual with an inner beauty, a woman who doesn’t need money, power or fame,...

As it turns out, I’ve been slightly remiss when it comes to praising this year’s 25th edition of AFI Fest 2011 presented by Audi. I’ve tossed off comments about how the festival gets better with every passing year, but in the wake of today’s announcement of the festival’s Centerpiece Galas and Special Screenings, I’ve realized that I have not gone far enough. AFI Fest has not just gotten better this year, the festival has made a dramatic jump to top-tier status, rolling out titles that play like a cinephile’s Christmas list for 2011. Today’s lineup announcement is essentially a “best-of” list of this year’s festival favorites, including Michel Hazanavicius‘s The Artist, Steve McQueen‘s Shame, Oren Moverman‘s Rampart, Lynne Ramsay‘s We Need to Talk About Kevin, Roman Polanski‘s Carnage, Simon Curtis‘s My Week with Marilyn, Lars von Trier’s Melancholia, Gerardo Naranjo...

Luc Besson’s biopic of Burmese pacifist leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, The Lady, will open the Rome Film Festival on October 27, reports Variety. The film, from French director Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita, Fifth Element), reveals the romantic side of Suu Kyi’s life through her relationship with British husband, Michael Aris, and their separation during Suu Kyi’s detention and house arrest, imposed on her despite winning the country’s election. Rebecca Frayn wrote the screenplay after 18 months of interviewing Suu Kyi’s relatives and friends. Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh (Tomorrow Never Dies, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) stars with David Thewlis; both will be in attendance for the opening. During filming, Yeoh was targeted by Myanmar authorities for portraying Suu Kyi, despite Besson’s attempts to film the movie quietly. The Lady will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

The first teaser poster and trailer for French director Luc Besson's new movie, The Lady, have been released online. Written by Rebecca Frayn, The Lady is based on the inspiring true story of Burmese political leader Aung San Suu Kyi (played by Michelle Yeoh), who spent 15 years under house arrest for her relentless non-violent campaign for democracy.
The Lady was shot quietly, under the fake working title "Dans la Lumière," because Suu Kyi was still under house arrest when it went into production in October of last year and Besson did not want jeopardize her release, which was scheduled for the following month. The teaser poster was designed by celebrated artist Shepard Fairey and is based on his own design for a poster celebrating the real Aung San Suu Kyi, who has become an icon for democracy.

If you're more interested in the typical fall slate of festival entrees than summer's glut of tentpole action fare, this is a great week. The Toronto International Film Festival announced the first wave of films that will play the fest in September. This is a batch of about 50 titles, which makes up only a small chunk of the programming. Usually Tiff features between two and three hundred films. But these are some of the highest-profile entries. Below you'll find rundowns on the new films from George Clooney, Bennett Miller, Jay & Mark Duplass, Todd Solondz, Francis Ford Coppola, Cameron Crowe, Sarah Polley, Fernando Meirelles, Lars von Trier, Marc Forster, Steve McQueen, Alexander Payne, and Lynne Ramsay. No announcement yet of the Midnight Madness programming choices, always some of my faves, but this is a great start. This is quite the list -- there are easily thirty films here that could be potential top ten for 2011 candidates,...

The Toronto International Film Festival is once again proving to be a major stop on the festival circuit. The announcement was released yesterday of 53 titles, including 31 world premieres, and some of the biggest names of the year are among them. Most, if not all, of the films I am most looking forward to will be in attendance, and with the festival just around the corner, the time to get excited for these offerings is now.

It looks like we're in for another great year at the Toronto International Film Festival, and I'm excited to be just a little bit closer to the action this time around. Michelle Yeoh as Aung San Suu Kyi, The Lady The Ides of March George Clooney, North American Premiere — The Ides of March takes place during the frantic last days before a heavily contested Ohio presidential primary, when an up-and-coming campaign press secretary (Ryan Gosling) finds himself involved in a political scandal that threatens to upend his candidate’s shot at the presidency. Also starring George Clooney, Paul Giamatti and Philip Seymour Hoffman. The Lady Luc Besson, World Premiere — The Lady is the extraordinary story of Aung San Suu Kyi and her husband, Michael Aris. It is also the story of the peaceful quest of the woman who is at the core of Burma’s democracy movement. Despite distance, long separations, and a dangerously hostile regime, their love endures until the very end. It’s a story of devotion and human understanding set against a backdrop of political turmoil that continues today.
