CSIhas become the staple television phenomenon that spawned multiple spin-offs and redefined the procedural. It is the series that ushered the televised procedural crime drama into American culture ever since its creation back in 2000. After 16 seasons and over 300 episodes, CSI said goodbye back in 2015 only to make a comeback late in 2021 with its original two cast members, Gil Grissom, played by William Peterson, and Sara Sidle, played by Jorja Fox, back in the lab.

Laurence Fishburne left CSI: Crime Scene Investigation for a specific reason. The show, which premiered on CBS in 2000, was created by Anthony E. Zuiker and ran for 15 seasons, in the process spawning half a dozen spinoffs including CSI: Miami, which ran for 10 seasons, and CSI: NY, which ran for nine. The flagship show, which followed a Las Vegas Police Department crime scene investigation team, featured a rotating cast of stars over the years, which included William Petersen, Marg Helgenberger, Gary Dourdan, George Eads, Jorja Fox, Paul Guilfoyle, Eric Szmanda, Robert David Hall, Louise Lombard, and Elisabeth Shue.

American actress Jorja Fox did some minor roles here and there when she got her much needed break in the industry with ER. In this, she played the recurring role of Dr. Maggie Doyle and quickly gained popularity. While she continued to pick up roles, it was the CBS police procedural drama CSI that earned her a strong fan base. She played the intelligent Sara Sidle in this and had amazing chemistry with William Petersen’s Gil Grissom.

The changing landscape of TV, with the introduction of streaming services like Netflix and the decline of cable, has led to series with fewer seasons and fewer episodes per season. However, some programs have stood the test of time and lasted way longer than fans would have thought possible.
While it's easy for animated shows like South Park to go on for years because of the creative freedom and endless possibilities in the genre, some drama shows have lasted just as long due to their gripping storytelling. They also replace characters as they age to keep viewers interested. As things change, it's comforting for many viewers to find a show that taps into nostalgia while tackling modern issues. From The Simpsons to Grey's Anatomy, several TV shows have been running for decades and still boast a steady viewership, with no end in sight.

The attention-grabbing episode "Cockroaches" sets the stage for significant character development, leading to an exciting climax until the end. The impactful episode "Anonymous" showcases early engagement with a serial killer case and unique scientific work by the team. "After The Show" delves into team dynamics and professional envy, with Catherine's strong investigative skills coming to the forefront.
After 15 seasons, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation has amassed many fantastic episodes, but only a few stand out as the best CSI episodes. Since the show ran for so long, few characters lasted until the end. However, beloved leads like Gil Grissom (William Petersen), Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger), and Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) are major players in the greatest episodes of the series. The show is set in Las Vegas, and the crimes frequently incorporate different aspects of the city's history and legacy.
The series' huge success is because CSI did things differently than other crime procedurals.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for CSI: Vegas season 3, episode 10.
The series finale of CSI: Vegas season 3 was a standout episode, highlighting newer characters and setting up an exciting direction for season 4. CSI: Vegas attracted a significant viewership for its series finale, showcasing potential for future growth and engagement had the show continued. This proves CBS made a mistake in canceling the series.
Despite its recent cancelation, CSI: Vegas still had plenty of gas in the tank, leading to questions about why the network let such a successful series go. As the last of the five shows in the CSI franchise, Vegas was unique because it featured a mix of old and new characters in a familiar setting. Original CSI stars William Petersen and Jorja Fox appeared in season 1, and season 2 brought Marg Helgenberger back to fill the void after Petersen and Fox's arcs concluded.

CSI: Vegas has come to a close with the airing of its Season 3 finale on CBS. While there won't be a future for the series on the network any longer, the show managed to get a big win on its way out the door.
Per TVLine, the series finale of CSI: Vegas set a new high for the series, drawing the highest viewership it's ever had. On Sunday, the airing of the series finale drew 4.8 million total viewers, a 16% increase. Because the cancelation was not known until more recently, it wasn't planned for CSI: Vegas to end with its third season, resulting in a cliffhanger conclusion that may never be resolved. Perhaps the silver lining is that the show made it to three seasons when the original plan was for the show to be a limited series. CSI: Vegas star Pauline Newsome is also holding out hope for her character's story to continue.

Pauline Newsome expresses interest in reprising the role of Maxine in the future. The cancellation of CSI: Vegas doesn't rule out the return of Maxine to the franchise, as CBS may develop a new show. After three seasons and 39 episodes, the ratings continued to be strong.

CBS canceled NCIS: Hawaii and CSI: Vegas due to strategic scheduling decisions based on performance metrics and financial considerations. Despite cancelations, CBS remains committed to its CSI franchise and plans to continue with new projects, including the blockbuster NCIS series.
CBS recently announced the cancelation of several shows, including NCIS: Hawaii and CSI: Vegas. The network's executives shared the reasons that led to the discontinuation of the said shows during CBS's press briefing.

CBS is developing a new CSI show despite cancelling CSI: Vegas amid budget constraints. The future CSI series details and casting were omitted in the announcement by the CBS President. The new spinoff might benefit from returning to a weekly case format instead of following the serialized path.
A new CSI show is in active development at CBS, according to a top network executive, despite the cancellation of CSI: Vegas. Continuing the long-running procedural drama of the same name, CSI: Vegas took a different approach than the original by going in a more serialized direction. In its first installment, a group of investigators led by Maxine Roby (Paula Newsome) turn to old friends - including Gil Grissom (William Petersen) and Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) - to solve a case centered around former colleague David Hodges (Wallace Langham). Despite generally solid ratings, CSI: Vegas was among the shows recently cancelled by CBS.

The viewing public learned of CSI: Vegas's end on April 19.
Its cancellation by CBS really shouldn't have come as a shock. Its middling ratings have made it a bubble show throughout its entire run.
CSI: Vegas had every opportunity to thrive. It first aired in 2021, amid a wistful revival craze as a nation coming out of a pandemic sought comfort viewing.
In that first season, odd couple Gil Grissom (William Peterson) and Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) returned to break a conspiracy smearing the former crime lab's reputation.
At the same time, this generation's CSI lab, led by Maxine Roby (Paula Newsome), solved new cases like the former criminologists that viewers had loved for 16 seasons, only with newer, fancier gadgets to do the work.
Marg Helgenberger's Catherine Willows has fit seamlessly with the current squad over the past two seasons.
Like a legacy at any institution, the series was given time to find its way.

CSI: Vegas stars have shared their reactions to the news that the series will not be returning for a fourth season. The current season, which reaches its conclusion in May, will be the last entry in this iteration of the much-loved crime drama and indeed the ending of the franchise for now. As the news broke of the series being brought to a close, fans shared their disappointment on social media, and two of the show’s stars were not far behind.
CSI and CSI: Vegas star Marg Helgenberger, who portrayed Catherine Willows for a total of 14 seasons across all of her appearances in both shows, shared her sadness at the cancelation, and expressed her gratitude for the journey she has been on.
“I’m gonna miss my partners in crime solving. CSI:vegas, unfortunately, has been cancelled. Each & every person involved with the making of this series brought their A game each & every day.

The CSI franchise’s return to CBS is coming to an end as CBS on Friday opted not to renew CSI: Vegas for a fourth season.
On Saturday, CSI and CSI: Vegas star Marg Helgenberger who played Catherine Willows for 14 seasons across the original series and the followup, reflected on the cancellation.
“Each & every person involved with the making of this series brought their A game each & every day,” Helgenberger wrote on Instagram next to an on-set photo of the cast. “It was truly a pleasure & honor to work/play alongside such a fun & talented company of story tellers. Immeasurable thanks & gratitude to all for making this experience such a memorable ride. And to all the fans; we did it all for you.”
Lex Medlin, who, like Helgenberger, joined CSI: Vegas as a series regular in Season 2, posted a similar behind-the-scenes cast photo on Ig with a note to fans about the cancellation.

CBS has canceled CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd, two TV shows that are each still garnering more than four million viewers an episode. CSI: Vegas is in its fourth season, with five episodes to go. So Help Me Todd is in its second season, with four episodes to go. Both series have been performing better than several other CBS programs, so it's quite a surprise that CBS has canned both shows in the middle of their seasons.
So Help Me Todd starred Marcia Gay Harden and Skylar Astin in a light legal dramedy about an out-of-work private detective deep in debt to his successful mother, who offers to erase his debt if he lends his talents to her law firm. The show premiered with 4.82 million live viewers and hasn't slipped much at all, with its second season premiere garnering 4.91 million viewers.

The crime scene investigations in Las Vegas are over at CBS. Following reports that CSI: Vegas was in serious danger of getting canceled, the bad news has now been confirmed, as CBS has axed the CSI sequel series after three seasons.
Per Deadline, CSI: Vegas was one of two shows to get axed on Friday. So Help Me Todd has also been canceled, and this news comes as a bit of a shock, as it had been a solid ratings performer alongside CSI: Vegas. However, compared with the other shows on CBS, they were still the least-watched drama shows on the network for the Spring 2024 season. With so many other CBS shows getting renewed, and with new shows like NCIS: Origins, Watson, and the Matlock reboot debuting in the fall, the axe had to fall somewhere, sealing the fate of CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd. CBS has cancelled one of its long-running crime franchises with CSI: Vegas alongside So Help Me Todd to make way for new shows. Despite improved ratings for the former, the network has decided to cut ties with the crime show. Both shows had previously been on the bubble for CBS, ultimately landing the axe due to their growing roster of projects.
One of CBS' longest-running crime franchises has come to an end again as CSI: Vegas has been cancelled along with So Help Me Todd. The former show served as a revival of the iconic police procedural, featuring the return of most original stars, including William Petersen, Jorja Fox and Marg Helgenberger. The latter legal dramedy revolved around a rule-bending private investigator who is roped into working for his mother's law firm as their in-house investigator.

Both “So Help Me Todd” and “CSI: Vegas” have been canceled at CBS, Variety has learned.
“So Help Me Todd” is currently airing its second season at the broadcaster, while “CSI: Vegas” is airing its third. Both shows are scheduled to air their season finales in May, which will now serve as series finales.
The two shows were some of the few CBS shows awaiting words on their fates for next season. The only other CBS shows with pending renewal statuses are “The Equalizer” and “NCIS: Hawai’i.” They are both solid performers, with “So Help Me Todd” averaging 7.7 million viewers an episode in multiplatform Live+35 and “CSI: Vegas” averaging 7.6 million. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, CBS simply did not have enough room on the schedule to bring them back.
In addition to its many previously announced renewals, CBS already has a number of new shows set to debut next season.

CBS has canceled CSI: Vegas after three seasons and So Help Me Todd after two. The news is not surprising as Deadline revealed earlier this week that both dramas were heavily on the bubble and in grave danger.
That despite CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd being solid ratings performers. With the entire CBS schedule doing well this season and three new drama series joining in 2024-25, NCIS: Origins, Matlock and Watson (in addition to a second season of the Australian NCIS: Sydney), the network was faced with painful decisions, and So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas are the least watched CBS drama series this spring in both linear and multi-platform ratings.

In 2000, Christopher Nolan’s Mememto blew everyone away. The psychological thriller stars Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jorja Fox, and Joe Pantoliano. It’s the story of a man named Leonardo, who has short-term memory loss and must seek revenge for his wife’s death. Due to his forgettable memory, Leonardo had to rely only on photographs. The film is based on Christopher’s brother Jonathan Nolan’s short story, Memento Mori.
It has been 24 years since Memento was released, and Nolan fans consider it one of his best directorials. The movie has twists and turns and moments that will startle you often. But did you know that when the movie was screened initially, the response was not that great? Jonathan Nolan made this shocking revelation.

Memento defied traditional storytelling, becoming an innovative hit for the Nolans with a unique narrative structure. Initial reactions to the film were negative, with executives displaying contempt for the audience's intelligence. Despite being overshadowed by other Nolan hits, Memento remains the director's joint-best movie on Rotten Tomatoes.
Memento became an early example of the kind of twisting, innovative narrative that Christopher Nolan would become partially known for with movies like Inception and Tenet. The Guy Pierce-starring mystery thriller would go on to be a defining moment for Nolan and his brother, screenwriter Jonathan Nolan, but the latter revealed that it could have all been very different considering the initial reaction to that film.
Premiering in 2000, the Nolans’ groundbreaking film defied traditional structure to tell its story in reverse. Based on the short-story by Jonathan, Memento sees Pierce playing Leonard, a former insurance investigator who suffers from short-term memory loss.

CSI: Vegas provides opportunities for early CSI characters to wrap up their character arcs in the long-running franchise. Actors returning for reboots and spin-offs is common in network television, giving CSI: Vegas a wealth of characters and episodes to draw from. Iconic characters like Gil Grissom, Sara Sidle, and Catherine Willows have already made appearances in CSI: Vegas, setting a precedent for more to return.

CSI: Vegas cannot have crossovers with other CSI shows due to the franchise not having any other shows currently on the air. The original CSI series had multiple memorable team-up episodes, known for bringing together familiar characters from across the franchise. It's unlikely CSI: Miami, NY, and Cyber are ever revived, though there could always be new CSI shows.
CSI: Vegas, currently on season 3, has featured several characters from the first CSI show in either cameo appearances or recurrent roles, but there is one thing the revival cannot bring back from the original series. Starting as a reboot of Crime Scene Investigation bringing back William Petersen as Gil Grissom and Jorja Fox as Sara Sidle, CSI: Vegas has since found its own identity and no longer heavily relies on the legacy characters. David Hodges, Jim Brass, and Catherine Willows also returned for the sequel series.

The budding relationship between Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) and Gil Grissom (William Petersen) on CBS's CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (known by CSI fans as Gsr - Grissom Sara Relationship) wasn't exactly a slow burn; it was a smoldering ember at best. But that's what made it so good. While it was evident from the beginning of the CSI series that Sara and Grissom had feelings for one another, there wasn't much of an attempt to build the romantic tension. The revelation for viewers that Grissom and Sara were involved romantically was revealed in the Season 6 finale. The final scene showed Grissom lying on a bed and talking, and when Sara was revealed, coming out of the bathroom in a robe, it was clear what was happening.

CBS's CSI: Crime Scene Investigation has always been about the evidence. The hit police procedural introduced audiences to a new kind of crime drama where forensics was king, and the characters were secondary. That isn't to say that the characters weren't interesting — quite the opposite, in fact. Each investigator added unique perspectives and helped drive the narrative, but the stories always came back to the details of the crimes. As fascinating as the gritty crime details were, audiences would have quickly lost interest if the characters weren't compelling. CSI introduced viewers to many captivating characters, but one that remained an enigma for much of the first few seasons is Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox). That all changed in Season 3, Episode 14, "One Hit Wonder," when Sara shows a little-seen side of herself, making her more relatable and likable.

The success of CSI spin-offs relies on a compelling dynamic between characters, both in the lab and outside of work. CSI: Vegas benefits from familiar faces from the original series, but the team's balance is still finding its stride. CSI: Miami's success comes from providing intricate backstories for characters, but it could result in uneven development within the group.
One of the most iconic crime procedural franchises on network television, CSI, has incurred multiple spin-offs since the original series premiered, but not every investigative team is as strong as the others. As with most procedurals, the cases are the hook, but the interpersonal drama and development keep the audience watching. To be invested in these relationships, the characters working together in the lab must have an intriguing dynamic and enough chemistry to make their decisions important to the plot.

The 2000s were all about recovering from Y2K, wearing low-rise jeans and cargo pants, and listening to mixed CDs, though those eventually got loaded onto the new iPod. On television, reality TV got its beginning with the premiere of Survivor on May 31, 2000, and film franchises like Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and Pirates of the Caribbean ruled the box office.
Movies in the 2000s also had some not-so-great trends, like torture horror (Hostel), raunchy frat boy comedies (Road Trip), and fat suits (The Nutty Professor), but the decade also came with some of the most beloved films of the last 30 years, including The Dark Knight (2008), Mean Girls (2004), and Iron Man (2008), which kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With all the incredible films released between 2000 and 2009, there are bound to be some that audiences have missed, and now is the perfect time to catch up.

CSI: Vegas season 3 faces delays in production due to ongoing strikes, making its release date uncertain and likely to be in 2024 instead of 2023. The new season will continue to focus on a mix of legacy characters and new cast members, with Marg Helgenberger's Catherine Willows continuing to play a major role. The storylines for CSI: Vegas season 3 are yet to be revealed, but unresolved arcs such as Joshua Folsom's murder charge and Maxine Roby's Ptsd are expected to be addressed.
CSI was arguably responsible for changing the face of crime procedural series on television, so it’s no wonder that CSI: Vegas season 3 is on the way. The CBS series revives the original CSI with a blend of new and old characters, following the familiar format of using forensic science to unravel the mysteries behind criminal cases. This may be the season that CSI: Vegas finally stands on its own two feet.
In its first two seasons, this hybrid has faced a difficult challenge. It's not a revival of the popular series, which ran for 15 seasons on CBS. It isn't a reboot, with new characters repopulating an old concept.
Instead, in its first two seasons, CSI: Vegas has featured a couple of legacy characters to draw in viewers of the original series.
In CSI: Vegas Season 1, power couple Gil Grissom (William Peterson) and Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) returned to clear the lab's reputation and former lab rat David Hodges (Wallace Langham) from a well-crafted frame.
Meanwhile, seemingly in the background, the lab's new criminologists solved the day-to-day cases.
What Were the Highlights of CSI: Vegas Season 2?
The second season struck a better balance between new and old. It almost had to.
The return of Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger) was well handled.

Eric Szmanda addresses another possible CSI: Vegas return for his character. A follow-up to CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, the series tracks a team of forensic investigators who employ new techniques to analyze evidence and protect the streets of Sin City. CSI: Vegas premiered on CBS back in 2021 and featured several original cast members, including William Petersen and Jorja Fox. Szmanda portrayed Greg Sanders, a main character throughout most of CSI, and while he was revealed to have left the Crime Lab before the events of the sequel, he eventually returned towards the end of season 2.
Szmanda's time on CSI: Vegas was brief, but the actor is already teasing more appearances down the line. In a recent interview with TV Insider, he reveals that Greg's future was left uncertain because there is a possibility that he could come back, adding that "nothing's off the table."
