CSI: Vegas stars have shared their reactions to the news that the series will not be returning for a fourth season. The current season, which reaches its conclusion in May, will be the last entry in this iteration of the much-loved crime drama and indeed the ending of the franchise for now. As the news broke of the series being brought to a close, fans shared their disappointment on social media, and two of the show’s stars were not far behind.

CSI and CSI: Vegas star Marg Helgenberger, who portrayed Catherine Willows for a total of 14 seasons across all of her appearances in both shows, shared her sadness at the cancelation, and expressed her gratitude for the journey she has been on.

The CSI franchise’s return to CBS is coming to an end as CBS on Friday opted not to renew CSI: Vegas for a fourth season.

On Saturday, CSI and CSI: Vegas star Marg Helgenberger who played Catherine Willows for 14 seasons across the original series and the followup, reflected on the cancellation.

“Each & every person involved with the making of this series brought their A game each & every day,” Helgenberger wrote on Instagram next to an on-set photo of the cast. “It was truly a pleasure & honor to work/play alongside such a fun & talented company of story tellers. Lex Medlin, who, like Helgenberger, joined CSI: Vegas as a series regular in Season 2, posted a similar behind-the-scenes cast photo on Ig with a note to fans about the cancellation.

CBS has canceled CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd, two TV shows that are each still garnering more than four million viewers an episode. CSI: Vegas is in its fourth season, with five episodes to go. So Help Me Todd is in its second season, with four episodes to go. Both series have been performing better than several other CBS programs, so it's quite a surprise that CBS has canned both shows in the middle of their seasons.

So Help Me Todd starred Marcia Gay Harden and Skylar Astin in a light legal dramedy about an out-of-work private detective deep in debt to his successful mother, who offers to erase his debt if he lends his talents to her law firm. The show premiered with 4.82 million live viewers and hasn't slipped much at all, with its second season premiere garnering 4.91 million viewers.

The only other CBS shows with pending renewal statuses are “The Equalizer” and “NCIS: Hawai’i.” They are both solid performers, with “So Help Me Todd” averaging 7.7 million viewers an episode in multiplatform Live+35 and “CSI: Vegas” averaging 7.6 million. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, CBS simply did not have enough room on the schedule to bring them back.

In addition to its many previously announced renewals, CBS already has a number of new shows set to debut next season.

CBS has canceled CSI: Vegas after three seasons and So Help Me Todd after two. The news is not surprising as Deadline revealed earlier this week that both dramas were heavily on the bubble and in grave danger.

That despite CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd being solid ratings performers. With the entire CBS schedule doing well this season and three new drama series joining in 2024-25, NCIS: Origins, Matlock and Watson (in addition to a second season of the Australian NCIS: Sydney), the network was faced with painful decisions, and So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas are the least watched CBS drama series this spring in both linear and multi-platform ratings.

The budding relationship between Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) and Gil Grissom (William Petersen) on CBS's CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (known by CSI fans as Gsr - Grissom Sara Relationship) wasn't exactly a slow burn; it was a smoldering ember at best. But that's what made it so good. While it was evident from the beginning of the CSI series that Sara and Grissom had feelings for one another, there wasn't much of an attempt to build the romantic tension. The revelation for viewers that Grissom and Sara were involved romantically was revealed in the Season 6 finale. The final scene showed Grissom lying on a bed and talking, and when Sara was revealed, coming out of the bathroom in a robe, it was clear what was happening.

CBS's CSI: Crime Scene Investigation has always been about the evidence. The hit police procedural introduced audiences to a new kind of crime drama where forensics was king, and the characters were secondary. That isn't to say that the characters weren't interesting — quite the opposite, in fact. Each investigator added unique perspectives and helped drive the narrative, but the stories always came back to the details of the crimes. As fascinating as the gritty crime details were, audiences would have quickly lost interest if the characters weren't compelling. CSI introduced viewers to many captivating characters, but one that remained an enigma for much of the first few seasons is Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox). That all changed in Season 3, Episode 14, "One Hit Wonder," when Sara shows a little-seen side of herself, making her more relatable and likable.

The success of CSI spin-offs relies on a compelling dynamic between characters, both in the lab and outside of work. CSI: Vegas benefits from familiar faces from the original series, but the team's balance is still finding its stride. CSI: Miami's success comes from providing intricate backstories for characters, but it could result in uneven development within the group.

One of the most iconic crime procedural franchises on network television, CSI, has incurred multiple spin-offs since the original series premiered, but not every investigative team is as strong as the others. As with most procedurals, the cases are the hook, but the interpersonal drama and development keep the audience watching. In its first two seasons, this hybrid has faced a difficult challenge. It's not a revival of the popular series, which ran for 15 seasons on CBS. It isn't a reboot, with new characters repopulating an old concept.

Instead, in its first two seasons, CSI: Vegas has featured a couple of legacy characters to draw in viewers of the original series.

In CSI: Vegas Season 1, power couple Gil Grissom (William Peterson) and Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) returned to clear the lab's reputation and former lab rat David Hodges (Wallace Langham) from a well-crafted frame.

Meanwhile, seemingly in the background, the lab's new criminologists solved the day-to-day cases.
