In the offices of Dunder Mifflin (Scranton branch), salesmen, accountants and even Hr got together to decide once and for all: Is Hilary Swank hot or not? They’re referring to her looks, but one could just as easily be talking about her career. At what point was Hilary Swank hot in her career? In 2008, when the episode aired: Yeah. In the years between her Oscars? Not exactly. Now? No. So, let’s take a look and find out…Wtf Happened to…Hilary Swank?

The Oscar front-runner for Best Picture, “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” got a massive boost on nominations morning when it reaped a leading 11 bids. Among those many citations was one for lead actress contender Michelle Yeoh, her first ever after working in the business for decades. Should “Everything Everywhere” go on to win Best Picture and Best Actress, it would become the 13th film in Oscar history to achieve such a feat.
Yeoh takes on the role of laundromat owner Evelyn Quan Wang in the multi-dimensional adventure flick directed by The Daniels (aka Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert). Her competitors in the Best Actress category are Cate Blanchett (“Tár”), Ana de Armas (“Blonde”), Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”) and Michelle Williams (“The Fabelmans”). Happy Birthday to one of We Are Movie Geeks favorite stars. Clint Eastwood was born on this day in 1930, making him 90 years old today. Last year’s Richard Jewell proved that he actor and two-time Oscar winning director hasn’t let his age slow him down a bit.
We posted a list of his ten best films as an actor on his last birthday, but this list is what the Geeks at We Are Movie Geeks think are his best out of 38 feature films as a director.
10. Mystic River
Mystic River (2003) told the story of three childhood friends, Jimmy, Dan & Sean, who drifted apart after a terrible tragedy & grew up in the same city. Destiny pitted them again & it’s brutal tragedy again. Jimmy’s 19 year old daughter murdered & Dave is the strong suspect. Sean is a cop trying to solve the crime before something unusual done by uncontrollable with situational fix.

Believe it or not, it’s been 15 years since the Oscar winner for Best Actress hailed from the year’s Best Picture champ. The last time it happened was 2004, when Hilary Swank prevailed for “Million Dollar Baby” as boxer Maggie Fitzgerald in Clint Eastwood‘s tragic sports drama. None of Swank’s co-nominees that year starred in Best Picture nominees: Annette Bening (“Being Julia”), Catalina Sandino Moreno (“Maria Full of Grace”), Imelda Staunton (“Vera Drake”) and Kate Winslet (“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”). Could there be — gasp! — a Best Actress Oscar curse in the making?

In honor of the women’s U.S soccer team beating out the Netherlands in Sunday’s World Cup Final, watch these inspiring female athletes bring their star-power to the silver-screen. From “Bring it On” to “Bend it Like Beckham,” we have you covered with movies that run the athletic gamut.
“Bring it On”
Two rival cheerleading squads duke it out in a teen flick fraught with routine theft, betrayal, romantic drama, and of course high flying cheer stunts. The movie delivers on its title’s promise — the girls of Rancho Carne and East Compton High indeed “bring it on.” Watch the young Kirsten Dunst and Gabrielle Union give starmaking performances in this cult classic.
“Bring it On Again”
The cheerleading sequel has graduated from high school drama to college campus drama. With an entirely new cast and plotline, the followup still maintains the cheer squad battles that made its predecessor so entertaining.

Last year, Frances McDormand won her second Best Actress Oscar for her searing performance as grieving mother Mildred Hayes in Martin McDonagh‘s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri.” Sam Rockwell won for his featured turn as the racist police officer Jason Dixon who is won over by her fervor.
They were the sixth such pairing of leading actress and supporting actor to take home Academy Awards. Lady Gaga and Sam Elliott could well become the seventh to do so. Lady Gaga sits atop our Best Actress chart for her work as Ally Campana, a would-be singer who is discovered by Jackson Maine, a troubled talent. The screen vet Elliott plays Jackson’s older brother Bobby and is firmly in the top five contenders in the Best Supporting Actor race.

These standout performances by Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell have already been rewarded at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, Critics’ Choice and SAG Awards, making the dynamic duo odds-on frontrunners at the Oscars. “Three Billboards” is also predicted to win the Oscar for Best Picture, according to Gold Derby’s combined predictions.

The past 12 Best Picture Oscar winners all have one thing in common: None starred a woman in the leading role. You have to go all the way back to “Million Dollar Baby” (2004) to find a Best Picture champ told from the perspective of a female character — in that case it was Hilary Swank‘s amateur boxer Maggie Fitzgerald. Might “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” which stars Frances McDormand as bereaved mother Mildred Hayes who shames the police department for not solving her daughter’s murder, follow in “Million Dollar Baby’s” boxing gloves 13 years later by winning Best Picture?

Our countdown of the 100 best films of the 21st century continues. This is Part 2 #75 through 51.
Click here for Part 1 (#100-76)!
The first decade and a half of the 21st century has brought a lot of changes to the landscape of film. The advancement and sophistication of computers has made realistic computer generated effects a mainstay in both big-budget and small-budget films. The internet and streaming technologies have given big Hollywood new competition in films produced independently and by non-traditional means. We went from purchasing films on yards of tape to plastic disks, and now we can simply upload them to the cloud. Advertisements for films have reached a higher, more ruthless level where generating hype through trailers and teasers is crucial for a film’s commercial success. Movie attendance has fluctuated along with the economy, but that hasn’t stopped films from breaking box office records, including having films gross...

'Million Dollar Baby' movie with Hilary Swank and Clint Eastwood. 'Million Dollar Baby' movie: Clint Eastwood contrived, overlong drama made (barely) watchable by first-rate central performance Fresh off the enthusiastically received – and insincere – Mystic River, Clint Eastwood went on to tackle the ups and downs of the boxing world in the 2004 melo Million Dollar Baby. Despite the cheery title, this is not the usual Rocky-esque rags-to-riches story of the determined underdog who inevitably becomes a super-topdog once she (in this case it's a “she”) puts on her gloves, jumps into the boxing ring, and starts using other women as punching bags. That's because about two-thirds into the film, Million Dollar Baby takes a radical turn toward tragedy that is as unexpected as everything else on screen is painfully predictable. In fact, once the dust is settled, even that last third quickly derails into the same sentimental mush Eastwood and...

Jose here, still reeling from Rust and Bone this past Sunday (going again today in a couple of hours because it's that good). My first reaction after watching it was: wow, Marion Cotillard truly has been trying to prove to us all her Oscar win was no accident.
I am not a fan of La Vie en Rose but year after year I have found myself more astounded by Cotillard's work. She was heartbreaking in Nine and was the only thing in Inception worth anyone's time, but it's in Rust and Bone where she provesonce and for all that she's one of the most fearless actresses of our time. Most people think she's a shoo-in for a Best Actress nomination but I'm not sure this will be so easy, given that her character isn't likable at all and we know that AMPAS likes to like its leading ladies; even Margaret Thatcher...

J. Edgar opens in theaters this Friday and it is the 33rd film directed by Clint Eastwood. Beginning with the thriller Play Misty For Me in 1971, Eastwood has directed westerns, action films, comedies, and dramas. From the very early days of his career, Eastwood had been frustrated by directors insisting that scenes be re-shot multiple times and perfected, and when he began as a director in 1971, he made a conscious attempt to avoid any aspects of directing he had been indifferent to as an actor. As a result, Eastwood is renowned for his efficient film directing and to reduce filming time and to keep budgets under control.
As seen through the eyes of Hoover himself, J. Edgar explores the personal and public life and relationships of a man who could distort the truth as easily as he upheld it during a life devoted to his own idea of justice, often...

Even the best-choreographed beat-down scene in a film can benefit from a one-two-punch of witty dialogue right before the fists start flying. A few actors try to make these scenes work in theaters every summer, but even the best leading men in Hollywood don't have to wear heels when they rumble.

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
Warrior (starring Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton and Nick Notle) is not a boxing movie. I know it’s Mma (Mixed Martial Arts). So why on Earth am I writing a Top 7 about boxers one week after Warrior failed to excite audiences at the box office? Wow. Great question. I’ll try to answer that. 1) If this article gets you excited about seeing someone punch someone else (in a movie) then maybe you’ll go see Warrior, which I totally think you should. 2) When I was watching Warrior I wasn’t comparing it kickboxing movies (Bloodsport), or films that have a lot of fighting in them (Fight Club). I kept going back and comparing them to the drama of boxing films. While I realize Tommy (Hardy) could potentially destroy anyone on this list, I’m still going to make it. Keep in mind,...

I've decided not to follow the line of most critics on this one by comparing Conviction (2009), the latest offering from Tony Goldwyn, to something that might have been turned out in the mid-nineties by the Lifetime network. Firstly, this is because I’m not an American and my only experience of television from the Us at that time was likely to have been repeats of Rikki Lake run on Channel 4. The second reason is that I’m writing this review for a UK based website, and it's likely that many of the readers wouldn't learn much from comparisons made between the film and the schmaltzy products of American cable networks.
Conviction tells the (apparently) story of Betty Anne Waters (Hilary Swank), a young women who, following the imprisonment of her brother Kenneth (Sam Rockwell) for the vicious and brutal murder of a local woman, embarks on an impassioned crusade to win his freedom,...

Not every actress can move from a stint on Beverly Hills, 90210 one year to becoming an Oscar-winning actress the next, but that's exactly what Hilary Swank did. In one fell swoop as Brandon Teena, she wiped away memories of her ditz in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and her brief time as The Next Karate Kid. The Academy win earned her a number of high-profile roles which led her to her second win as Maggie Fitzgerald in Million Dollar Baby only 5 years later. But since then? Not much. The Black Dahlia didn't do it for her, nor did Freedom Writers, The Reaping, and certainly not P.S. I Love You. By the time Amelia hit last year, it was hard to remember the actress who made such a quick and stellar turn towards Hollywood success. But, I'm happy to say, I think she's back.

40. United 93 (2006)
It takes guts to make a movie about the four terrorists that took over United Flight 93 and plagued us Americans with a day we won’t ever forget. No doubt that Paul Greengrass would have to climb an uphill battle to get this movie the way he wanted it to look but he does the film justice, more importantly the victims on this flight get supreme recognition. He makes it impossible for us to take our eyes off of the screen. The camera style throws us unto the plane of the teary eyed, enraged passengers whose emotions are unexplainable. Its heart-wrenching seeing the passengers come as one and do what they have to do, risking their lives to save...

Historical figures like Amelia Earhart are hard to come by-- a woman who bucked the trends of her time by wearing pants and refusing to marry until her 30s, who wasn't just a pioneer in the field of aviation, but was committed to helping other women follow in her footsteps. Then again, directors like Mira Nair and actresses like Hilary Swank are hard to come by too. Nair is one of few female directors working consistently with big budgets and stars, while Swank has made her career playing tough women like Million Dollar Baby's Maggie Fitzgerald, or tackling tricky roles like Brandon Teena in Boys Don't Cry. Suffice it to say that the pair were as excited as can be to tackle the iconoclastic Earhart, delving deep into her history and her psyche to present a portrait of the woman from the inside, not as a cultural figure but...

If you were not a fan of Beverly Hills 90210 or the later Karate Kid installments, then it's likely you were first introduced to Hilary Swank in 1999 via her breakthrough role in Kimberly Peirce's Boys Don't Cry. For her efforts as Brandon Teena, the transgendered teen tragically misunderstood by a small Nebraska town, Swank won her first Best Actress Oscar, at the ripe old age of 24. Five years later, Swank again gave a knockout (sorry!) performance in Million Dollar Baby, Clint Eastwood's tearjerker about a female boxer with heart and determination. Defying all odds, Swank took home her second Oscar (at 29) for her brave and physical portrayal of Maggie Fitzgerald. Unfortunately for Swank, this double win before the age of 30 seems to have engendered a love-her-or-hate-her dichotomy that lingers today. Ask anyone, 'What do you think of Hilary Swank?' Chances are, they will not be lukewarm. For ...

A biopic of Amelia Earhart is like every girl's dream come true. Did any woman not grow up idolizing her, spend hours covering her gorgeous flight jackets, and wondering just where her plane vanished to? She has a story just made for the big screen, and if there was an actress who could pull it off, I do think it's Hilary Swank. She has the physical resemblance, and I know she has the talent, if only because I still love her as Maggie Fitzgerald.
Unfortunately, I'm not seeing much promise in Amelia. The first trailer for Mira Nair's biopic has gone online at Yahoo! Movies. (I've embedded a version below the jump to make it easier, but be sure to go visit Yahoo! for the HD version.) While it's beautifully costumed and lushly filmed, it looks a little too teary and overwrought. Admittedly, my image of Earhart is one...

At the press conference following today's New York Film Festival screening of Changeling, a critic in the audience asked director Clint Eastwood about his choices to make two movies in a row about women standing up for themselves, following a career of tough-guy roles. And while Eastwood's latest is, again, the story of a woman finding her inner strength, he doesn't have nearly the same success with Changeling's Christine Collins that he did with Million Dollar Baby's Maggie Fitzgerald. Gorgeous to look at and stirring in parts, Changeling is a dressed-up period piece with nowhere to go, a cipher masquerading as a heartfelt piece of work. None of the blame, as it turns out, lies with Angelina Jolie, who has been a celebrity so much more than she's been an actor lately that we've forgotten how powerful she can be. Wraith-thin, with her loose 20's-style dresses hanging from...
