The Prince estate has unearthed “Hot Summer,” which premiered briefly a decade ago, as the latest offering from the posthumous album Welcome 2 America.
The song was originally only played once on Prince’s 52nd birthday, June 7th, 2010, with the singer debuting the track on Minnesota public radio station the Current before it reentered Prince’s vaults after that one-time airing.

On and off since Prince’s death in 2016, archivist Michael Howe has spent ample time sifting through audio and video tapes, film footage, and other sonic flotsam in the late pop star’s vault. But last year, in the L.A.-area storage space that currently houses Prince’s archives, Howe came across three CD-Rs, each with a title and track sequence written on its cover in Prince’s own hand. He quickly realized he’d stumbled upon something he’d only heard whispers about: a complete, unreleased Prince album.

“Born 2 Die,” the second single off Prince’s upcoming posthumous album Welcome 2 America, premiered Thursday. It follows the album’s title track, released earlier this year.
On the sultry tune, Prince is joined by bassist Tal Wilkenfeld, drummer Chris Coleman, and vocalists Shelby J., Liv Warfield and Elisa Fiorillo. The singer’s longtime music director Morris Hayes added the final production to the song.
