For nearly three decades, Tom Cruise has been leading the Impossible Mission Force, but that chapter is coming to a close this week with Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning. There may be Mission: Impossible movies in the future, but Cruise swears it's his last ride as Ethan Hunt.
Cruise originated the role in 1996's Mission: Impossible movie, which was based on the 1960s TV series of the same name. That first film had more overt ties to the show, but as the cinematic series continued, the films gradually became their own thing. Now, the franchise is synonymous with some of the best action movies ever made.
But not every Mission: Impossible film is created equal. To celebrate the end of an era, we’re ranking the first seven Mission: Impossible movies, from worst to best.
7. Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)

Plot: With the world on the brink of a nuclear war due to the machinations of an evil AI program called “The Entity”, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team make an all-out, last-ditch effort to prevent armageddon.
Review: Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning aims to put a bow on the franchise by bringing together elements from all the previous instalments in one all-out conclusion that aims to send off Cruise’s Ethan Hunt with a bang. Picking up exactly where Dead Reckoning left off, it ties together many critical plot points from previous films. This is particularly true of the first and third films, to illustrate how Ethan Hunt’s efforts to save the world over and over may have inadvertently played a part in the fact that it’s now on the brink.
It’s a bold direction for the franchise, taking a detour into nearly mythical territory,...

Deadline reports that Damien Chazelle is setting up his next project and is eyeing some prominent actors, with Cillian Murphy and Daniel Craig both in negotiations to star.
Chazelle will write and direct the untitled movie, which, according to insiders, will be set in a prison. Assuming the deal closes, production could kick off later this year.
The director has been considering several projects, with many believing that his Evel Knievel movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio would be next. However, Deadline’s report states that the studio couldn’t reach a deal for DiCaprio, which has put that one on the back burner as Chazelle moves forward with the prison drama.

When Spaced and Shaun of the Dead star Simon Pegg signed on to play the Imf technician Benji Dunn in 2006’s Mission: Impossible III, he never thought he’d continue to clack keys and crack wise while saving Ethan Hunt’s bacon more than two decades and six movies later.
“I went to Hollywood for the first time, and I did my little bit on the Paramount lot. I then went home and figured that was it,” Pegg told The Hollywood Reporter during the lead-up to the release of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. “And a year or so after Mission III came out, I got an email from J.J. that said, ‘How would you feel if Benji was a field agent?’ And I think I replied, ‘I would feel good.'”

After six seasons of "Peaky Blinders," Steven Knight has created a world full of unforgettable characters thanks to some world-famous stars who bring them to life. Through Cillian Murphy's piercing blue eyes, Thomas Shelby springs to life with a thousand-yard stare. Thanks to Tom Hardy's snarling, brutish screen presence, Alfie Simmons raises the tension of any room to unspeakable highs. It's also why, even years after her passing, we still listen for the footsteps of Helen McCrory's Polly Gray. These are the roles we can't imagine anyone else taking over; however, in perhaps one of the most important and rarely seen characters in the show, Prime Minister Winston Churchill, this legendary figure was portrayed by three different actors, one of whom was hidden under carefully applied prosthetics.
Initially appearing in the first season of "Peaky Blinders," Churchill isn't quite at the status of the figure he'd become,...

It’s hard to imagine Tom Cruise saying goodbye to Ethan Hunt, the character he’s dutifully portrayed since 1996’s Mission: Impossible. But everything from the name (The Final Reckoning) to the trailer’s closing moment (“I need you to trust me one last time”) sure makes it seem like the end of the road for a character that’s outlasted countless crises, two James Bonds, and five presidential administrations.

In the summer of 2005, Simon Pegg arrived on the Paramount lot to film a supporting role for J.J. Abrams and Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible III. Knowing that the director and star-producer were fans of his preceding zombie comedy, Shaun of the Dead (2004), Pegg thought his role as Imf technician Benji Dunn was just a way to satisfy their temporary curiosity. At no point did he think that he’d still be playing Dunn two decades later in the franchise’s eighth installment, Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning.

I then went home and figured that was it,” Pegg tells The Hollywood Reporter in support of The Final Reckoning’s May 23 theatrical release. “And a year or so after Mission III came out, I got an email from J.J. that said, ‘How...

Nobody does action like Tom Cruise does and his latest Mission: Impossible flick is yet another proof of that. Now that his time in the franchise is rumored to be over, Cruise is likely on the lookout for new roles, projects, and co-stars.
So while he searches for newer projects and co-stars to work with, many believe Cruise would jump at the chance to work with Scarlett Johansson after seeing Jurassic World Rebirth. Having previously shown interest in working with the Marvel star, the collaboration is even more likely to happen after her potentially standout role, as seen so far in the Rebirth trailers.

Ryan Reynolds is currently going through a lot, amid his wife, Blake Lively’s high-profile lawsuit against Justin Baldoni. It seems that whatever wrong is happening in the industry, people are quickly pointing their fingers at Reynolds. One such incident happened when Bobby Lee stirred the pot claiming how Reynolds might have been the star who was mean to Rebecca Ferguson.
Previously, during her Dune: Part Two press tour, Rebecca Ferguson appeared on the Reign with Josh Smith podcast and reflected on an emotional story with an “idiot co-star”, who tormented her on set. Thereafter, while fans began thinking of Tom Cruise and Hugh Jackman as the toxic thespian, Bobby Lee claimed with assurance that it was none other than Ryan Reynolds. But guess what? He couldn’t be more wrong.

God bless Brad Bird. He was the director tasked with the revival of the "Mission: Impossible" franchise in 2011, after J.J. Abrams concluded the initial three films in the series with "Mission: Impossible III," and he laid down the groundwork for future installments, aiming to be bigger, better, and more blistering than ever before. Bird's "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" was a blast. It opened the floodgates for a goofier yet also more intense, and even more action-oriented line of movies that set out to be hyper-exhilarating and adrenaline-fueled spectacles.
But it wasn't until Christopher McQuarrie's first entry in the franchise, "Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation," that the Tom Cruise-powered features reached their full potential. The fifth installment was absolute peak, leaning heavily into the breathtaking stunts and elaborate set pieces that propelled the franchise into new, formerly unseen heights. Yet "Rogue Nation" also managed to strike a balance...

Nearly 40 years on from the release of Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark, a TV remake is on the way from A24.

Tom Cruise is known for being the ultimate action God in the film industry. While it is true that there are several actors who perform their own stunts, Cruise is just built different for his knack for performing death defying stunts.
The best example of this is his Mission Impossible franchise, where he has hung from a helicopter several feet above the ground, drove a motorcycle multiple times off a cliff, climbed the tallest building in the world aka the Burj Khalifa, and even hung from a moving Airbus A400. While the stunt we are going to talk about is pretty much nothing compared to the above-mentioned stunts, it was still deadly enough that director John Woo was afraid to ask Cruise to do it again.

The Mission: Impossible franchise, led by the legendary and fan favorite Tom Cruise, has been celebrated for its high-power action and complex plots to date. However, recent criticisms, like those of the James Bond series, seem misplaced, especially when actors like Henry Cavill play a part in them. Cavill’s portrayal of August Walker in Mission: Impossible—Fallout brought strength while distinguishing it from other spy thrillers.
As we dig deeper, we see that the departures of key actors, Rebecca Ferguson and Jeremy Renner, were often due to personal choices. Understanding these decisions might provide insight into this dynamic, long-running franchise and the challenges that come with it for the actors and the series itself.

While Tom Cruise has always been the main draw when it comes to the Mission: Impossible franchise, over the years several other characters have made their way into fans’ hearts. One such character is Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa Faust.

Tom Cruise is back, and boy, is he back with a banger. After 25 long years, his run in the Mission: Impossible franchise might well be coming to an end, but the last film is far from a disappointment, as the early reviews are saying.
As Ethan Hunt, Cruise has become the face of a series that redefined the action genre, delivering iconic moments like the Burj Khalifa climb, the famous driving the bike off the cliff stunt, and the Halo jump. Now, Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning, the eighth and reportedly the last film for Cruise, promises to close Ethan Hunt’s saga with a bang.
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film picks up right after 2023’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and introduces new stakes, including a daring underwater mission. Filled with complex characters, a formidable world-ending threat, and the emotional weight of a potential farewell to Ethan Hunt,...

Few modern blockbuster franchises have been as thrilling as "Mission: Impossible." What began as an excellent summer thriller with Brian De Palma's crackerjack "Mission: Impossible" in 1996 evolved into something bigger with each subsequent sequel. Over time, the series became a seemingly unstoppable machine buoyed by the presence of Tom Cruise, a preternatural performer willing to risk life and limb for our entertainment. The "Mission" films weren't just action-adventures — they were stunt showcases, where Cruise, as superspy Ethan Hunt, would continually do his own dangerous stunt work. The results spoke for themselves: in an era where big studio movies have become awash in digital artifice, the "Mission: Impossible" movies were doing something real. Tom Cruise wasn't safe on some studio set in front of a greenscreen, damn it! He was really hanging off the tallest building in the world!

iEnthralling and packed with nail-biting, armrest-grabbing tension, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning cements Tom Cruise as the greatest movie star in motion picture history! Perhaps no other actor puts more on the line—or exposes himself to more real danger—for the sake of his fans than Tom Terrific, Maverick, or, as Nick Offerman affectionately calls him, “Tom Cat.”
There’s nothing “Tc” won’t do to entertain the masses. The jaw-dropping action stunts in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning are spectacular—and that intensifier is no overstatement. The sheer audacity, bravado, and maybe even outright arrogance of watching the world’s biggest star hang at 8,000 feet in 140 mph winds, without CGI, is so nerve-wracking that you can hardly stand it or sit still.
We know Cruise survives the real-life stunt, but people respond to guts, and this guy has them. He elevates the action-adventure genre to new,...

What will seemingly be the last chapter in Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible franchise, The Final Reckoning, will hit theaters everywhere next weekend. After playing Ethan Hunt for nearly 30 years, Cruise has found ways to one-up himself each time he suits up as the legendary spy, and The Final Reckoning will certainly be no different. One of the most famous shots from the film’s marketing campaign sees Cruise hanging off the wings of a biplane soaring through the air, which is one of the most dangerous stunts in movie history. Mission: Impossible 8 director Christopher McQuarrie recently sat down for an interview with GQ, and he revealed that expert wing walkers told Cruise his plane stunt was impossible:
"They said, ‘What do you want to do?’ And Tom said, ‘I want to be between the wings of the plane holding on to the tension wires, and I want to...

It’s safe to say that the “Mission: Impossible” franchise is the most consistent recurring saga in Hollywood’s recent history, as nearly every installment in the series contains the type of creative storytelling, stylistic flourishes, and inventive spectacle that most blockbusters are devoid of. While John Woo’s “Mission: Impossible II” stood as the only real failure in the series, the franchise took on a more serialized format with the fifth entry, “Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation,” the first of which to be directed by Christopher McQuarrie. By deepening the character arcs and adding more insight into the psychology of Ethan Hunt, McQuarrie was able to heighten the stakes with each subsequent entry, with the final two installments serving as a grandiose sendoff to the series that began in 1996.

Not many would willingly relive the spring of 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic was still in its nascent stages and we still disinfected groceries while remaining socially distant in our homes. But, for a chance to act opposite Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal, it was worth it for Matt Gomez Hidaka.
Gomez Hidaka, 27, stars in Midsommar director Ari Aster’s latest movie for A24, Eddington. The film takes place in May 2020 and is set in a small town in New Mexico where the local sheriff (Phoenix) faces off against the mayor (Pascal). The plot has been kept under wraps, but in the trailer for the film, news coverage and social media posts revisit the chaotic pandemic era, from reports tracking the virus’ spread to the rising racial reckoning and protests against police brutality that erupted in the summer. Gomez Hidaka plays the son of Pascal’s mayor.

Tom Cruise may not be the tallest guy in Hollywood, but he sure stands taller than most in the food chain. Reported to be 5 feet and 7 inches tall, the superstar is often made fun of for his height. After all, haters need something or the other to latch onto to bring a man down, right? However, his larger-than-life movies often exaggerate his height, making him appear taller than he really is.
While there are obviously many ways to accomplish this trick, there is one movie where Tom Cruise didn’t have to lie about his height – the 2014 sci-fi, Edge of Tomorrow, starring Emily Blunt. Here’s why I believe this creative decision did justice to his character, Major William Cage.

From put-upon backroom schlubs to everyone-knows romances, the franchise reflects modern work culture, especially the collective banter
With Tom Cruise’s reckoning upgraded to “final” in the imminent instalment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, it seems a strong probability that the curtain is about to fall on cinema’s leading daredevil. Unless his Impossible Mission Force agent Ethan Hunt expires mid-battle like 007 in No Time to Die, it seems likely the character will be gracefully retired. Cruise, now 62, can’t reasonably be expected to suction-cup himself to landmark architecture for much longer. Which begs the question of his Imf colleagues: what to buy the departing espionage hotshot? There’s always the trusty carriage clock.
The office comparison isn’t just fanciful. Along with envelope-pushing stunts and concierge-class glamour, part of the reason for the Mission: Impossible franchise’s resurgence over the last 15 years is something far more relatable: how it reflects modern office dynamics.

The Peaky Blinders world is all set to expand its horizon with an upcoming film, reigniting the tenacious glory of Birmingham’s most dangerous gang. As fans early wait for Cillian Murphy’s return as the iconic Tommy Shelby, Tom Hardy’s involvement with the upcoming project remains uncertain.
Hardy portrayed Alfie Solomons in the Peaky Blinders series and has expressed ambiguity when asked if he will be reprising his role. The vagueness casts a shadow over the movie’s character and cast lineup, especially when we contrast it with Adrien Brody’s definite exit from the franchise, even when he expressed passionate interest in continuing his portrayal.

Jeremy Renner might not have stuck around with the Mission: Impossible franchise, but he did so for a good reason.
While appearing on Happy Sad Confused to promote his new book My Next Breath: A Memoir, Renner and host Josh Horowitz talked about his long history with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and his willingness to step away from the mainline films after Avengers: Endgame. When asked whether there was a big conversation with Marvel about this issue, the Hawkeye star emphasized that his commitment to his family came first, stating, "It's more the willingness to step away from things. Because my daughter is a priority and it's not even a choice. I'm gonna be a father to my daughter. If they're going to keep shooting in London or like... it's just not going to work."

Mystery box shows like "Lost" can be incredible, shows full of intrigue and mythology that raise questions and have you guessing while the character drama keeps you engaged. But mystery box shows can also get too bogged down by the mysteries themselves that they don't have much else to offer — like most of the "Lost" copies that came after that show's success.
That's what makes "Silo" so unique and great that Stephen King recommended it as a must-watched mystery box show. This is a sci-fi thriller with plenty of mysteries but because the characters can't just stop their lives and ponder these questions, we as the audience accept that we're not getting easy answers (at least not for a while). Together with just having memorable and well-written characters, the way the show doesn't make the mysteries feel urgent to the characters makes it easier to just follow them as they slowly unravel things themselves.

From ‘Ted Lasso’ to ‘Severance,’ here’s what makes Apple TV+ unskippable.
When Apple TV+ launched, I was more curious than anything — like, how was a tech company gonna handle movies and TV shows? Well, turns out, they’ve handled it just fine. In fact, they’ve quietly transformed into one of the best homes for prestige TV. The strategy’s pretty clear now: fewer shows, bigger swings, and major stars leading the charge. Whether it’s a grounded workplace drama or high-concept sci-fi, Apple TV+ tends to go all-in on quality — and you can see the difference. While other streamers come and go from my rotation, this one’s stuck around. I don’t churn it. There’s always something worth watching. Netflix just adapted this apocalyptic gem, and despite not having big names like Rebecca Ferguson, it’s already snowballing into a cult hit with a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score!
Based on the legendary 1950s comic by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López, Netflix’s The Eternaut isn’t just another survival story—it’s a deep, chilling dive into humanity versus alien horror. Only 6 episodes in, but with a Season 2 already brewing for 2026, this show might be Netflix’s boldest sci-fi move yet.

Earlier this year, Apple TV+ finished airing the second season of Silo, the science fiction series starring Rebecca Ferguson as intrepid engineer truth-seeker Juliette Nichols. Season 2 was a thrilling ride, with Juliette unraveling the mysteries of a second Silo while all her friends back in the original Silo we saw during season 1 kicked off a revolution. In today's day and age of television, we'd expect to be waiting quite a while for the show's third season. But that won't be the case for Silo, because Apple announced on X over the weekend that the show had just wrapped filming on season 3!
Silo was renewed for season 3 and 4 in December 2024; season 4 will bring the series to a conclusion. The show will cover all of the material from Hugh Howey's Silo books, wrapping this show up in a strong way without wandering off into the weeds. Silo season 3 and 4 were slated to be filmed back-to-back.

One of AppleTV+’s most talked-about apocalyptic shows just took a huge step towards its return to screens. Led by an all-star cast including Rebecca Ferguson and Tim Robbins, Silo delivered huge viewership for the streamer when it debuted in 2023, and the second season continued to build an audience for the mystery series set in a toxic future where communities exist in huge underground bunkers called Silos. Now, a new social media post has confirmed that Season 3 has now wrapped.
Including a celebratory behind-the-scenes image of Fergusson, the post confirms that the new season is in the can, and now the hefty amount of post-production can begin. Currently, there has been no word on when fans can expect to see Season 3 debut on the platform, but chances are it will be some time early in 2026. For those who need a reminder, the premise of Silo is:
