In much of the same way that his earlier film “Hex” emerges as a bizarre updating of a popular foreign genre film before putting his own spin on things, “Curse of Evil” is director Kuei Chih-hung's updating of the 1953 genre title “The Maze.” Although originally started by director Fung Wong before taking over completely, this over-the-top movie features a roundtable collection of Shaw Brothers stars and contains just enough of Keui's trademark wackiness to be a highly enjoyable genre effort.

Few movements in the genre emerge as more uniquely localized to a central country than the Hong Kong black magic scene. This started in 1975 with the aptly-named Black Magic from director Ho Meng-hua that focused on bizarre occult rituals, gross-out sequences of shock horror, and wild special effects. Despite Kuei Chih-hung reaching a zenith in the genre with the seminal The Boxer’s Omen several years later, this earlier effort is no less impressive, enjoyable and outright revolting at times.
Following the discovery of a dead body, police detective Bobby Wong (Melvin Wong) becomes intrigued by the story of chief suspect Stephen Lam Wai (Fei Ai) who claims to have been possessed at the time of the murder. Traveling to Thailand to investigate the claims, a strange series of encounters begin that draw Wong to the same conclusion, that he himself has become possessed by a madman in...

One of the most well-regarded choreographers of the day, Chia Tang has never caught on the way contemporaries Chang Cheh, Yuen Woo-ping or Liu Chia-liang have become luminaries in the style. Still, judging by this first directorial offering, he had enough to offer that should’ve kept his name in the genres’ upper echelon with this strong and highly enjoyable late-era Shaw Brothers effort.
After being separated at birth, twin brothers Zi-tai and Dao Xing are forced to learn different forms of martial arts based on their disparate status in the world. With Zi-tai training with Emperor Gu and Dao Xing living with the Buddhist monks Wu Ming Wu Chu and Wu Li (Tau Wan Yue) in the countryside, they are unaware of each others’ true identity as the evil 9th Lord seeks them out to kill the two in order to keep his secret rule intact.
