John Brumpton in ‘Measure for Measure.’
One of Australia’s hardest working actors, John Brumpton rarely turns down offers – except when he is asked to work for free.
In the past year he has played a rapist in Stephen Johnson’s Western High Ground, a gunslinger in the second season of Mystery Road, Hugo Weaving’s protector in Paul Ireland’s Measure for Measure and a worried dad in Jamie Helmer and Michael Leonard’s short The Diver, which premieres in competition in Venice.
IMDb lists 95 credits for the actor who made his screen debut in The Flying Doctors in 1989 and took up the profession after working as a surveyor and professional boxer.
“It’s a tough industry and surviving this long is an achievement,” he tells If. “My approach is: ‘Just be yourself.’”

Kaarin Fairfax and Chris Haywood in ‘Skewwhiff.’
Chris Haywood is so committed to making a thriller based on the Australian novel The Crossing he has agreed to produce as well as star in the feature film.
First-time feature director James Khehtie sent the novel by B. Michael Radburn to the actor, who loved the premise: Taylor Bridges flees from Victoria to an isolated Tasmanian town to work as a park ranger after his daughter disappeared, triggering the breakdown of his marriage.
When a young girl who was the same age as his daughter vanishes, Bridges, a chronic sleepwalker, begins to wonder what happens when he sleepwalks.
“I did not want to produce but James insisted,” Haywood tells If, recalling that he has served as a producer only once before, on writer-director Peter Watkins’ 1991 feature doc The Media Project, which critiqued Australian media coverage of the first Gulf war.

It’s no secret that while these fair British Isles basically invented acting and movie-making, another country out there has a particular knack of making some tremendously emotional and jarringly real films and TV shows… Australia I am looking directly at you!
For years now I have championed some of the titles that come out of Australia (especially on the indie scene) the wealth of talent in front of and behind the camera is incredible. Look no further than TV shows like Underbelly or Wentworth; movies like Two Hands, Babadook, Chopper, Wolf Creek, Ned Kelly or Animal Kingdom to name a few.
Now I get to add West of Sunshine to my list of Aussie movies that more than deserve your attention.
I am a sucker for a movie...

"Are these men bad?" "It's a bit tricky..." Uncork'd Entertainment has just debuted an official Us trailer for a crime drama titled West of Sunshine set in Australia, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Jason Raftopoulos. This premiered at the Venice Film Festival back in 2017, but is just now getting a very small released in the Us. The film is about a father who has less than a day to pay back a debt to a violent loan shark, while his relationship with his young son is tested as his plans fall apart. Damian Hill stars as Jim, along with Ty Perham, Kat Stewart, Arthur Angel, Eliza D'Souza, and Kaarin Fairfax. This already opened in Australia last year and is heading to VOD here soon, for those interested in it. One of the quotes mentions Animal Kingdom, which is an exceptional Oz crime drama, but I don't think this one is that good.

The first streaming service dedicated exclusively to Australian films will launch in the first half of 2016. Ozflix will aim to offer 250-400 titles initially, with producers receiving 50 per cent of each pay-per-view transaction. The long-term goal is to make available every Australian film from the 1900s to latest releases. That timetable will depend on how long it takes to convert hundreds of films to digital. The company directors are veteran distributor/producer and AFI-Aacta chair Alan Finney and producer/director Ron V. Brown. Brown tells If he first had the idea for an all-Australian streaming service five years ago. He pitched the concept to Foxtel and got a tepid response. Earlier this year he floated the proposal with Finney, who said, .We have to do this and do this now.. They put their plan to distributors at the Australian International Movie Convention, which was warmly received. The site will...

John Jarratt and Kaarin Fairfax co-star and co-direct this rancid battle-of-the-sexes film, which is mean-spirited, implausible and offensive as a work of art
John Jarratt went to the pub to promote his new film StalkHer, touring a range of Australian outback hotels where prerelease screenings were followed by Q&A sessions and karaoke competitions. At least he got the choice of venue right, given audiences will want a stiff drink – probably several – if they manage to sit through all of the veteran actor’s behind–the–camera debut.
This rancid battle–of–the–sexes chamber piece, co-directed and co-produced by Jarratt and Kaarin Fairfax (who both star in the lead roles), is billed as a “comedy thriller”.

Luke Ford and Anna Samson play a distinctly odd couple at the centre of What Time Is My Heart?, the debut feature from writer-director Romi Trower.
Produced by Tristram Miall, the privately financed film also features Brooke Satchwell, Wade Briggs, Meyne Wyatt, Eddie Baroo and Kaarin Fairfax. Shooting wrapped in suburban Melbourne at the end of last month.
Ford, whose recent credits include Infini, Catching Milat and Deadline Gallipoli, plays Adrian, an It genius with a penchant for fast cars, leather gloves and soppy 1980s pop music, who also happens to have Ocd.
Samson (The Doctor Blake Mysteries, Winners & Losers) is Grace, a street artist with multiple personalities who can only engage in sexual activity through her promiscuous alter ego named G.
The new neighbours find themselves in therapy with the same psychiatrist and share a walk home one evening, beginning a kind of impossible love story with no touching,...

Wolf Creek.s John Jarratt will once again take a dark turn for the camera in his feature directorial debut, Stalkher.

.I spent most of my time directing the film while tied to a chair with my hands bound - a fun challenge that I really enjoyed. says Jarratt.

John Jarratt is convinced global piracy has severely impacted the B.O. potential of Wolf Creek 2.
The veteran actor reckons he can count the personal cost when he compares his share of the spoils from the original movie with the zero returns he.d had thus far from the sequel.
Six months after Wolf Creek opened in 2005, he got a cheque for $50,000. Eight months after the follow-up opened in Australia he tells If, .I haven.t made a goddamn cent out of it,. despite having a bigger share of the back-end.
Wolf Creek 2 producer Helen Leake tells If that investors are getting a return and it.s still early in the film.s earning cycle, with some major territories just opening.
"John is not an investor, we first repay all our investors and marketing costs which is what is happening,. she said.

Wolf Creek and Django Unchained.s John Jarratt has written and plans to star in an Aussie comedy Western.
The title, Passing Winds, epitomises the irreverent approach. That's the name of a cattle property owned by Jarratt.s character. Craig McLachlan has agreed to play the bad guy who aims to gain control of the land which is rich in untapped gold. Steve Bisley will play a bounty hunter.
Jarratt describes the tone as a cross between Blazing Saddles and Crocodile Dundee. He will produce the film with Kris Maric and Craig Kocinski, his partners in production company Ozpix Entertainment.
No director has yet been signed but Jarratt would love to hire someone of the calibre of Mel Gibson, having admired his work in the Richard Donner-directed Maverick opposite Jodie Foster-- although he doubts Mel would be willing to spend six months in Oz working on the film.

Wolf Creek star John Jarratt is directing his first feature, StalkHer, a gritty black comedy in which he co-stars with Kaarin Fairfax, on the Gold Coast.
Directing oneself can.t be easy but the degree of difficulty is even greater here because Jarratt.s character is tied to a chair for most of the film.
The screenplay is by Kris Maric, who is partnered with Craig Kocinski and Jarratt in production company Ozpix Entertainment.
Maric likens the plot to an Australian version of Misery meets Who.s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Jarratt.s character breaks into Fairfax.s house with evil intent and the tables are turned numerous times.
