Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on October 8th, 2020, reviewing the new live action film “The War with Grandpa,” featuring Robert De Niro.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Adapted from youth fiction, the plot involves Gramps (De Niro) moveing into his daughter’s home and being assigned the bedroom of his grandson (Oakes Fegley). This development is the impetus for the conflict. Similar to “Meet the Parents,” the film uses De Niro’s image as a tough guy for comedy. The cast includes Uma Thurman as his daughter, Jane Seymour as De Niro’s potential girlfriend, as well as Christopher Walken and Cheech Marin (of Cheech and Chong fame) as De Niro’s best friends
“The War with Grandpa” is in theaters on October 9th. See local listings for theaters and show times.. Featuring Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, Uma Thurman, Rob Riggle, Jane Seymour and Cheech Marin.

Every few years, Robert De Niro likes to mix it up. He’ll throw in “Last Vegas” or “The Intern” to remind us all he’s more than Travis Bickle or Jake Lamotta. He can also be a generic old man with a deep voice and a contract that requires him to wear reading glasses for 70% of the movie. And so arrives “The War With Grandpa,” an adaptation of Robert Kimmel Smith‘s 1984 novel, directed by animation veteran Tim Hill, with a script by Matt Ember and Tom J.

Robert De Niro adds another grandpa comedy to his filmography with the serviceable but uninspired family comedy The War With Grandpa. Still, it could have been worse – at least it’s not Dirty Grandpa II.
Oakes Fegley (Pete’s Dragon) stars as Peter, a pre-teen kid who’s horrified to hear that he’ll have to give up his bedroom when his mother, Sally (Uma Thurman) insists that Grandpa Ed (De Niro) has to move in with them. Spurred on by best friend Billy (Juliocesar Chavez), Pete decides to declare war on his grandpa until he gets his room back. And when Ed lays out the rules of engagement, an escalating series of pranks and practical jokes ensues.

“I think your grandpa might be a Ninja,” a frightened child warns the younger half of a warring faction in the new The War with Grandpa trailer. Robert De Niro, who survived the Vietnam War in The Deer Hunter, mob wars in Goodfellas and The Godfather Part II, and battled Sugar Ray Robinson in Raging Bull, is taking off his fiercest enemy yet. And may finally be outmatched in this conflict of pranks in the family movie.

Updated, 10:15 Am: 101 Studios is moving The War with Grandpa to Oct. 9. The Robert De Niro family comedy moves off the Sept. 18 weekend, where it was against Disney/20th Century Studios’ The King’s Man and to a weekend where there aren’t any wide releases. Given how movie theaters are reopening with auditorium capacity restrictions, few titles will be occupying the majority space of a multiplex in the near future. Still Tbd in regards to when California and New York reopen. As we reported yesterday, Canada is underway on Friday with Paramount’s SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, Vvs/Solstice Studios’ Unhinged and Warner Bros.’ tenth anniversary re-release of Inception.

Chicago – What was once an “event” – even the the most medium level animated film was a rare movie occasion – has now become commonplace in the film market. Once that tipping point was reached, suddenly the event became just another weekend, with just another film like “Home.”
Rating: 2.5/5.0
To be fair, “Home” is aimed toward the younger set, who likes bathroom jokes and gags using nacho cheese (in 3D!), but on the adult level, these films have become a bit cynical, more marketing vehicles than notable works. Like last year’s “The Nut Job” and “Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return,” the formula seems to be get some familiar stars to do voice work, create a extreme concept or easy-to-follow story, and market, market, market to the kiddies. Who suffers for these economic model sins? The parents paying the 3D premium – the price level of which is up to a decent...

Now that even Pixar are making more sequels than original films, it's encouraging to see DreamWorks attempt to launch a fresh franchise story, but is it good enough to rival the likes of Despicable Me and Toy Story?
Based on Adam Rex's 2007 children's book The True Meaning of Smekday, Home follows an alien race called the Boov who, despite being rather incompetent, manage to take over Earth in order to hide from their enemy.
To do this, the Boov move the entire human race in big pockets of desert space, thinking they are doing us a favour in the process. On paper, if this plot was taken by someone like Neil Blomkamp or James Cameron, it could have been transformed into a rather terrifying sci-fi horror film...

"Casino Royale" and "Green Lantern" director Martin Campbell is reportedly the top choice of both Paramount Pictures and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura to take the helm of a third film in the "G.I. Joe" series according to Schmoes Know. Filming is aiming to begin in the first half of next year.
The site claims official negotiations have not yet begun, but the job is essentially Campbell's if he wants it. Jonathan Lemkin ("Devil's Advocate," "Lethal Weapon 4") is penning the script which will center on Dwayne Johnson's character Roadblock. It looks like DreamWorks Animation finally has another hit on its hands with sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2, which opens in theaters tonight. If Dragon does indeed breathe fire at the box office, the company’s executives will finally be able to relax a little, considering that three out of four of the studio’s last efforts - Rise of the Guardians, The Croods, Turbo and Mr. Peabody and Sherman – have been financial disappointments. Next up, the studio has Home, about a girl (voiced by Rihanna) who befriends an alien (Jim Parsons) on the run from his race.
Based on the first trailer, Home is a bit more risky than some of DreamWorks’ other ventures, but hopefully kids will show up in droves to see the cute aliens, called Boovs, at the movie’s center. The studio is clearly putting a lot of trust in director Chris Johnson (Antz,...

In recent years, DreamWorks has been upping their output significantly, and though the studio has had some icy patches, the future is looking very, very good. Home, the studio’s 3D animated buddy comedy, kicks off a trio of movies for next year, with the hugely anticipated Kung Fu Panda 3 closing the year over the Christmas weekend.
2015 is pretty much guaranteed to be an awesome year for animation lovers everywhere.
The studio is continuing the How to Train Your Dragon franchise this year with the second instalment in the upcoming trilogy, with talk of expanding it into a quadrilogy, and they’ve used the family-friendly sequel to introduce Home to the masses.
When the galaxy’s most annoyingly optimistic alien finds himself on the run from his own alien race, he’s forced to team up with a fiercely stubborn teenage girl. Together they become the most unlikely fugitives ever to save the planet.

DreamWorks Animation has released their fun sci-fi comedy short Almost Home online for everyone to see. You can see the short on the big screen as well. It's attached to the studio's feature film Mr. Peabody & Sherman, which was actually a really fun kids flick.
Almost Home is an adaptation of the children's book by Adam Rex, and the story follows an alien race on a search for a planet to hide from a mortal enemy. The leader of the alien race is actually voiced by Steve Martin. The movie was directed by Tim Johnson (Shrek, Over the Hedge) and it was written by Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember (Get Smart, Epic). Derivative as all get out and plainly concocted by a committee, "Epic" is a children's animated film that is more entertaining and emotional than it has any right to be.
Characters make sacrifices and die, miss their parents and mourn. And we're touched. At least a little. Hard (if over-familiar) lessons are learned and laughs land on queue. Throw in some truly gorgeous animation and Blue Sky, the studio that made it, delivers more proof that it's moved on from the junky cash-machine "Ice Age" movies, even if this one doesn't rise to the charms and wit of "Rio."
Taking characters from William Joyce children's novel about "Leaf Men" and "Brave Good Bugs," a team of writers has borrowed from "Antz" and "A Bug's Life," and even "Spiderwicke Chronicles," for a story about the fairy forces of life in a forest, the Leaf Men (and women) and their allies, in...

Epic
Directed by Chris Wedge
Written by Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember
USA, 2013
We are living in a golden age of animation, yet so many people working at Hollywood’s studio-funded animation companies are content working in the realm of the familiar. Too frequently, new mainstream animated films are like a big bowl of soup, with countless flavors that you’ve tasted before tweaked only slightly to not be total carbon copies of something bigger and often better. Blue Sky’s latest, distributed by 20th Century Fox, is no different: Epic is pleasingly colorful and well animated. Unfortunately, it is immensely derivative and thus, only moderately charming some of the time.
It would take as much space to review this movie as it would to catalog its many inspirations (the word we’ll use in the spirit of being charitable) and describe exactly how Epic echoes them. Like FernGully: The Last Rainforest,...

Blue Sky Studios may be plucky underdogs when measured next to the brilliance of Pixar, but their ongoing Ice Age series and 2011's Rio show they know a thing or two about putting together bright and buoyant animated adventures.
Their latest offering Epic takes inspiration from William Joyce's book The Leaf Men and the Grave Good Bugs, bringing to life a miniature forest world populated by warriors riding atop hummingbirds, an evil tribe of Boggans led by Mandrake (Christoph Waltz) and a Mother Nature ruler called Queen Tara (voiced by Beyoncé).
There's a human component to the story, too, with Amanda Seyfried providing the viewer entry point as teen Mary Katherine (she prefers to go by Mk). The death of Mk's mother...

It's unreal how 2013 has really kicked it up a notch poster-count-wise. It seems that every major, and soon minor distributor, will be adding 50 posters per movie at this rate. We now have 20 posters for Epic which is helmed by Chris Wedge, with the voice talents of Josh Hutcherson, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Farrell, Christoph Waltz, Jason Sudeikis, Aziz Ansari, Beyoncé Knowles, Johnny Knoxville, Judah Friedlander, Steven Tyler, Pitbull and Blake Anderson. Still, it really is a beautiful, eye-catching poster and welcome addition to the recent character-to-actor cast cards we added, as well as interview soundbites. The 20th Century Fox release from Blue Sky Studios opens May 17th, and is scripted by Tom J. Astle, Daniel Shere, William Joyce, Matt Ember and James V. Hart. See more images below the latest poster.
