Steven Spielberg is responsible for creating some of the most unforgettable films of all time. From Schindler’s List to Jurassic Park, the filmmaker has time and again proven that no one has a mind quite like him. With his 1998 film Saving Private Ryan starring Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg gave the film industry one of the greatest films ever made.
Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan (1998)
However, there was a time when the film was met with a roadblock which could have ended with the cast of Saving Private Ryan walking out on Steven Spielberg. In order to make the film feel as realistic as possible, the filmmaker made the actors go through an extensive boot camp led by a Marine Corps veteran. Exhausted by the ordeals of Captain Dale Dye’s tasks, the cast of Saving Private Ryan almost quit their jobs before lead actor Tom Hanks changed their minds.

Welcome to The B-Side from The Film Stage. Here we usually talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today, we talk to a great film writer about a great film subgenre! Brian Raftery! Vietnam War Movie B-Sides!
Brian (author of the wonderful Best. Movie. Year. Ever. How 1999 Blew Up the Big Screen) released a wonderful podcast mini-series for The Ringer called Do We Get to Win This Time? this past summer. It examines the evolution of the American Vietnam War movie through the decades. Raftery speaks with everybody for this thing, from Oliver Stone to Dale Dye.
Our B-Sides today are: Hearts and Minds, The Little Girl of Hanoi, and Hamburger Hill.
We cover plenty more, dissecting movies made by both American and Vietnamese filmmakers. From when we first became aware of Vietnam as a war,...

In 2001, the first two episodes of HBO's World War II miniseries, "Band of Brothers," aired just two days before the September 11 terrorist attacks, an event that would irrevocably alter America and its perception of its own war history, much of which it has mythologized on film. However, when creators Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks set out to adapt Stephen E. Ambrose's nonfiction book, "Band of Brothers," they wanted their follow-up to "Saving Private Ryan" to have the ring of historical authenticity.
On "Saving Private Ryan," Hanks had already found himself channeling his character, Captain Miller, when other members of the cast threatened to quit before filming even started. The experience of being forced to go "method" and attend a rigorous boot camp, led by the senior military advisor and real-life Marine veteran Dale Dye, left some of them wanting to bow out.

Chances are if you've seen an American war film in the last 30 years, the name Dale Dye might ring a bell. Dye is a former Marine captain whose brief cameos and appearances are peppered throughout action films like "Under Siege," "Mission: Impossible," "Starship Troopers," and "Saving Private Ryan." After his first onscreen appearance in Tobe Hooper's "Invaders from Mars," Dye played Captain Harris in Oliver Stone's semi-autobiographical war epic "Platoon." The concept of actor boot camps is nothing new, and the intense soldier training that goes on at these grueling sessions does tend to bond the players together. The experience can also add some verisimilitude that pays respect to the actual soldiers that had to go through actual boot camp. Dale Dye's actor boot camps are legendary in the business. Apparently, the one that Charlie Sheen and the other actors went through during the making of "Platoon" in 1986 was particularly brutal.

When Steven Spielberg made "Saving Private Ryan, he wanted to portray the terrors of D-Day as genuinely as possible — not only visually, but also through the actors' performances. To help with the authenticity, the director sent his ensemble cast to a boot camp led by U.S. Marine Corps Captain Dale Dye, Hollywood's top military consultant who worked on other significant war films such as "Platoon" and "Casualties of War."
In the woods behind an old British aerospace plant in Hatfield, England, Dye led Tom Hanks and his seven co-stars in daily physical training taken from "the same sort of syllabus...

It’s not unheard of for an individual that’s been active in the military to take up acting or at least help out as a consultant, but Dale Dye has taken that to a degree that not many can match. Learning that the guy was as gung-ho for the military as he could be from a young age makes it all come together since he would hear stories from those around him when he went to work with his father. While low test scores kept him out of the US Naval Academy, this didn’t deter Dye from joining up with the

Released in 2018 the Australian alien invasion film Occupation caught a lot of people off guard with the amount of action and the quality of the effects it produced on a low budget. Now the sequel Occupation: Rainfall is here, the success of the original allowing it the luxury of a $25,000,000 dollar budget. Military adviser Dale Dye may have done more to help Hollywood deliver an accurate portrayal of war than anyone else in the business. From “Platoon” and “Saving Private Ryan” to “The Thin Red Line” and his most recent work, 2019’s “The Last Full Measure,” his attention to detail — along with his boot camp methods for teaching actors to be soldiers — share a singular vision: realism.
A veteran of three tours in Vietnam, Dye was a Marine correspondent awarded the Bronze Star for heroism in action. He’s equal parts storyteller, military historian and psychologist, and his performance prep goes where others fail to tread: into actors’ heads.
Born in 1944, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., Dale tagged along with his father, a liquor salesman, as he stocked local bars. Hearing war tales from the clientele, the youngster became fascinated with the military. After the Naval Academy turned down his application, he enlisted at age 20 in the Marines,...

CAA and Gersh launch Efm sales.
Tom Hanks will serve as executive producer on the Second World War D-Day landings film No Better Place To Die, which will be available to buyers at the Efm this week.
CAA and Gersh are arranging financing on the feature and represent Us rights in Berlin.
Vietnam War veteran Dale Dye wrote and directs the film and the parties involved say the project will do for the story of the D-Day airborne assault what Saving Private Ryan did for the Normandy beach landings.
Dye and Hanks worked together on Saving Private Ryan, where the latter played the role of a war department colonel. They also collaborated together in Forrest Gump, Band Of Brothers, The Pacific and Larry Crowne.

The downfall that faced Tobe Hooper's creative relationship with The Cannon Group in the eighties wasn't much different than the fate of George A. Romero's collaboration with Orion Pictures. After leaving an iconic legacy for horror in the previous decade, Hooper had a reputation to live up to when he made a three picture deal with Golan and Globus that resulted in the ambitious, but entertaining failure Lifeforce, the misunderstood parody The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, and the family friendly remake of Invaders From Mars that helped sink Cannon out of Hollywood forever.

Planes: Fire & Rescue, much like the Cars sequel, spins us into an entirely new world, and though the Cars franchise sequels haven’t been quite the blockbusters Pixar might have hoped for, this broader sequel theory has made them both far better films than simpler “add-on” efforts might have managed.
Dusty finds himself out of the racing game, and quickly joins with a crew of rescue vehicles who keep an eye on a vast forest in order to contain fires. Naturally, this isn’t something that sounds like a great time to Dusty at first, but he learns that there’s a lot more to life than being in the spotlight.
This all kicks off because Dusty continually pushes himself too far, damaging a part that can’t be replaced. In a fairly obvious maneuver, he ends up crashing, and causing a fire. This leads to the airport being shut down,...

Disney has released a set of beautiful vintage posters ahead of the release of Planes 2: Fire And Rescue.
Dusty and the gang are the focus of the posters – designed by Art Director Toby Wilson early in the production of the movie. The Americana-style concepts for the look of Piston Peak National Park were inspired by vintage 1930s Wpa-era prints.

Appreciated by wee’uns but widely disliked by adults with reviews to write, Planes seemed like a rare creative misfire for Lasseter-era Disney. But there were enough tinies in the former camp - $220m worth – to warrant a trilogy, and sure enough, part two, Planes 2: Fire & Rescue arrives this summer. If it’s anything like as easy on the eye as these new concept posters, that critical animus might just soften. The story this time has a crew of firefighting aircraft defending Piston Peak National Park from the ravages of bush fire. Signing up on scorch prevention duty is Dusty (Dane Cook), hero of Planes, who is resigned to his retirement from racing with a dicky engine and looking for a new outlet for his talents. Also on deck are wizened fire-and-rescue chopper Blade Ranger (Ed Harris), tanker Dipper (Julie Bowen), heavy-lift helicopter Windlifter (Wes Studi), ex-military...

Last summer's "Planes," animated by DisneyToon Studios and spun off from Disney/Pixar's lucrative "Cars" franchise, was a lovely little diversion -- a soaring, charming 3D travelogue that saw a crop-dusting plane named Dusty Crophopper (Dane Cook) seek out his destiny by competing in a worldwide air race. This year we get "Planes: Fire & Rescue," which sees Dusty switching positions -- after he finds out that his engine is damaged and he may never be able to race again, be decides he'll pursue a more selfless task and become a fire and rescue plane. It's a pretty nifty premise and a movie that we're even more excited for after taking a look at these six vintage-style posters.

This review contains spoilers.
3.10 Brazil
Falling Skies apparently saved up a big portion of its special effects budget for the final episode, which features multiple Beamer ships, a mega-mech, an Espheni transport ship, the long-awaited unveiling of the Volm super weapon, multiple members of the Volm race, and the Volm transport ship that has been one of humanity's last, best hopes for winning the war against the alien invaders with a minimum amount of messy bloodshed. Well, human bloodshed, that is.
For all its failings, Falling Skies has been very optimistic. For every bad moment near the close of an episode, there's been some sort of redemption by the end of the hour. Each season, we've had some sort of big cliffhanger to carry...

Director: Holly Dale.
Writer: Joe Weisberg.
Cast: Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton, Drew Roy and Colin Cunningham.
Episode 9 of the sci-fi television show "Falling Skies" aired August 7th. This episode was part of a two hour finale, which ends with "Eight Hours." This one hour episode put soldier Tom Mason (Noah Wyle) firmly against Captain Weaver (Will Patton) over a planned attack in Boston. Previous episodes involving reconnaisance have been building the tension for this attack that takes place in the final episode. The plan comes into question when the scout Dai (Peter Shinkoda) returns with news of the 4th and 5th Mass' demise, along with Col. Porter (Dale Dye). Events in this episode make the attack look like a suicide mission, while others argue for striking back against an alien invasion. This episode was full of tension, more unpredictable behaviours from Pope (Colin Cunningham), and a cliffhanger ending,...

Steven Spielberg's latest series is a post-alien invasion story starring Noah Wyle – but is that enough to draw sci-fi fans?
It's an exciting time for fans and followers of genre television; tonight it's Falling Skies' chance to make its mark. Will it be a candidate for early cancellation or will it have the legs to run for years to come? Will it be like Lost or Buffy, a series that explores the premise from every angle and builds on it with characters we'll look forward to welcoming into our homes every week? Or will it be a FlashForward or a V (remake)? Or, dare I even mention the name, an Outcasts? Even good shows can be binned, such as Joss Whedon's utterly terrific Firefly. You get the idea: with the sword of Damocles dangling so low it's almost in shot, how will Falling Skies fare?
It has a better pedigree than most,...

I really like that poster. The sky blue with the alternating thick/thin sans serif font and the jarringly bright yellow, drawing your eye to it and down towards the pair of movie stars at bottom right. Julia Roberts looks ecstatic and Tom Hanks suavely cool on his scooter—this could be a gem of a film with some sophisticated style.
Alas, though, it is not. After starting with the charming joke of a middle-aged man living and breathing his retail sales job, picking up the trash in the parking lot as he arrives before any of his co-workers, it slowly devolves into tedium. The titular Larry Crowne, Hanks is a bit of a goof, perhaps with a few screws loose, but definitely left of center on the maturity level. I guess working with kids half his age will cause that to happen, leaving his life as a 20-year Navy...

Hollywood is always responsive to trending hot topics--like the death of Osama bin Laden. Who will get close to the secretive Navy Seals to dramatize this pivotal moment in American history? First at bat is Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow and producer/writing partner Mark Boal, who are ramping up a SEALs bin Laden movie for Sony. The film will focus on the black ops mission that ended with bin Laden’s death in May 2011. Producer James Jacks is also developing a Seals Afghan war movie, Hindu Kush, that is picking up steam. Another possible way into the story: military film advisor Captain Dale Dye has written a graphic novel based on the capture of bin Laden, Code Word: Geronimo, to be published by Idw Publishing ...

Idw Publishing's one-shot graphic novel, "Code Word: Geronimo", in association with Charlie Foxtrot Entertainment, will be available September 6, 2011, written by Captain Dale Dye (Usmc, Ret.) and Dr. Julia Dye, with illustrations by Gerry Kissell and Amin Amat :
"...'Code Word: Geronimo' offers a blow-by-blow account inside the story of the clandestine raid on Osama bin Laden's compound by Seal Team 6, May 1, 2011..."
"Due to entirely appropriate security concerns," said Dye, "there is some creative license in our script. But I think readers will be gratified with the detail and thrilled with our take on one of the most daring and successful commando raids in American military history."
A portion of the proceeds from "Code Word: Geronimo" will be donated to a charity supporting military service members.
"I have worked for many years now with Charlie Foxtrot Entertainment on a number of successful projects," said Tom Waltz, Idw editor, former Marine and Desert Storm I veteran.

Alien invasion storylines are nothing new at the movies or on television. The latter medium has most recently had a set of failed shows like the V re-imagining and last season's The Event. There's some debate about whether those series were doomed because they were either too ambitious or had no long term plan, but TNT's new mini-series Falling Skies seems to have an advantage, having only a short summer run. The sci-fi tale is also grittier and more realistic or “down-to-Earth” so to speak, with a premise that cuts out unnecessary details, getting to the heart of the story as a strong human drama. With an all-star cast led by ER vet Noah Wyle, the series, executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, gets off to a strong start in its first ten minutes alone.A few years ago, Spielberg visited this territory with his 2005 remake of War of the Worlds. Imagine...

Chicago – It’s the end of the world as we know it, and the ragtag resistance fighters of “Falling Skies,” starring Noah Wyle from “ER,” are defending themselves against a surprise extraterrestrial colonization of earth. Live free or die hard.
TV Rating: 4.0/5.0
Falling Skies combines 2009’s “District 9” (space alien lizards), 1984’s “Red Dawn” (kids practicing guerilla warfare) and, of course, 1996’s “Independence Day” fairly effectively, while not going too far into the philosophical and psychological damage that a nuclear war-style destruction could have on a delicate American society. Noah Wyle is excellent as a conflicted ex-Military history professor turned warrior who represents a reasonable voice among the chaos.
The series opens with a series of children’s drawings, with a youthful voice over describing the invasion of a space alien force that knocks out most of the important cities in the United States, and puts the rest of the...

Platoon (2 Disc Blu-Ray/DVD Combo)MGM Home Entertainment1986/120 mins/Rated RList Price: $29.99 – Available May 24, 2011Fresh off the critical success of Salvador, Oliver Stone finally broke into the mainstream with Platoon , his impression of the Vietnam War, taken from when he observed it first-hand as a grunt. Stone uses an innocent, middle-class, college drop-out, who volunteers to join an infantry unit for patriotic reasons, Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen), to be his alter ego. As the narrator and letter writer to his grandmother, which allows us to hear his personal reactions to what is happening, it is through Taylor's eyes that we see the savagery of the war. The first thing the young man sees as his transport plane lands in Vietnam in 1967, are all the body bags and the disheartened looks of the soldiers leaving to go back home. His unit will be somewhere near the Cambodian border where just existing...

Kiss Me Deadly (Criterion) Robert Aldrich’s 1955 reinvention of the film noir detective story is one of cinema’s great genre mash-ups: part hardboiled noir; part cold war paranoid thriller; and part science- fiction. Ralph Meeker plays Mickey Spillane’s fascist detective Mike Hammer as a narcissistic simian thug, a sadist who would rather smash a suspect’s fingers than make love to the bevvy of beautiful dames that cross his path. In fact, the only time you see a smile cross Meeker’s sneering mug is when he’s doling out pain, with a vengeance. When a terrified young woman (Cloris Leachman, film debut) literally crossed Hammer’s path one night, and later turns up dead, he vows to get to the bottom of her brutal demise. One of the most influential films ever made, and perhaps the most-cited film by the architects...

Platoon Review
Platoon is an illuminating yet polarizing journey of one United States Marine Corps private during the Vietnam War, a wartime neophyte who eventually is forced-fed many lessons and conduct edicts, both fortuitous and detrimental ones, dependent upon the situation. Private Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen)’s two “fathers” during his tour of duty, Sergeant Elias (Willem Dafoe) and Staff Sergeant Barnes (Tom Berenger), create a new version of Private Taylor: weathered, aggressive, and less afraid of his own shadow.
Private Taylor is the classic entry character for script writers: a virtual blank slate through which the experiences of the film are written on. He is the character through which the audience is introduced into the world...

Platoon
Directed by: Oliver Stone
Cast: Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, Keith David, Forest Whitaker, Johnny Depp, John C. McGinley
Running Time: 2 hrs
Rating: R
Due Out: May 24, 2011
Plot: A young soldier (Sheen) learns about the dark side of morality when he signs up to serve a year-long stint in Vietnam.
Who’S It For?: Collectivists of films that have won “Best Picture,” or those who can enjoy a gritty character study about American soldiers in Vietnam.
Movie:
Platoon champions itself as the one of the “first honest films about Vietnam,” and there’s certainly some merit to that. Writer/director Oliver Stone takes some very personal experiences he had while in service in Vietnam and melds them into a captivating character study. Whilst doing this, he strips away any glorification of war, and also in some way or the other, a sense of immediate patriotism. On either...

Chicago – Oliver Stone’s “Platoon” is easily one of the most important films in my life. It came out in theaters when I was eleven and I saw it not long after that on VHS. My parents decided that, despite the intensity of the film, its subject matter was important enough that I could handle it even at a young age. I remember being simply blown away by the movie for numerous reasons.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
The film is a technical masterpiece with a personal touch. Not only did it open a chapter of history for me in new ways but it showed me how film could be used to deal with personal demons, as Stone so clearly does with this work. Winning several Oscars, including Best Picture, the movie stands as one of the best war films ever made and it makes its HD debut this week in a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.

Long before the "Two and a Half Men" fallout and Charlie Sheen's reactionary touring carnival, Sheen was already "winning" as Chris Taylor -- a young American who drops out of college for combat duty in Vietnam -- in Oliver Stone's acclaimed "Platoon," which arrives on Blu-ray for the first time on May 24.
The movie won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and is disturbingly realistic because it is based on Stone's real-life experiences during the Vietnam War.
Chris thinks it unfair that only the poor and uneducated are fighting in Vietnam and decides to enlist, but his fellow soldiers consider him crazy. Chris starts to believe they're right as the bodies begin to pile up and his group endures ambush after ambush by the Viet Cong near the border of Cambodia in 1967. A hardcore film buff can rattle off a list of their favorite cinematographers, maybe even editors or production designers. But when it comes to "military advisors" there is only one: Dale Dye.
He pretty much invented the role of current military advisor for films, and his list of credits is a mile long. He's also wound up before the cameras, acting first in walk-ons and is a regular on the forthcoming Falling Skies.
