"Breathe in the clear air, and out the blackness…" Netflix has released an official trailer for an acclaimed, super dark Australian thriller titled The Stranger, made by actor / director Thomas M. Wright. This first premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival back in May, just played at the Melbourne Film Festival, and is also stopping by the London Film Festival before debuting on Netflix in October. A small circle of seasoned undercover cops must pose as a vast and influential criminal network to catch a murderer who has evaded conviction for eight years. Joel Edgerton stars as Mark, a cop who perilously finds himself descending deeper into hell while trying to establish a relationship with a dangerous murder suspect. The film unravels as it plays out, initially you don't know who's who and what's going on, with details coming to light as the story continues. Also starring Sean Harris, Steve Mouzakis,...

Locusts will screen at The Tivoli Theater (6350 Delmar) Thursday, Nov 14 at 9:30pm as part of this year’s St. Louis International Film Festival.. Ticket information can be found Here
In “Locusts,” a dark thriller set in Australia’s Outback, estranged tech entrepreneur Ryan Black returns to his desert hometown — the ironically named Serenity Crossing — for his father’s funeral. Ryan is reluctantly reunited with his ex-con brother, and the pair soon becomes the target of an extortion scam at the hands of desperate criminal associates of their reprobate dad. The Aussie movie site FilmInk writes: “Boasting a tight and twisting script and stunning imagery, ‘Locusts’ is the kind of film that we don’t see nearly enough of in Australia: a classy crime B-movie in the style of John Dahl or (early) James Foley. It’s elevated even further, however, by the stellar performances. Ben Geurens is totally empathetic as the harried hero,...

‘Bilched.’ (Photo credit: Jay Dykes)
After making his screen debut as the star, writer and co-producer of an Australian teenage romantic comedy, Hal Cumpston could not have imagined what would happen next.
Three weeks after production of Bilched wrapped in Sydney, the 19-year-old was contacted by Us talent agency Industry Entertainment, suggesting he audition for one of the lead roles in AMC Studios’ The Walking Dead spin-off.
Cumpston did a selfie and was then asked to go to Los Angeles, where he nailed the role of Silas in the 10-part series which is now shooting in Richmond, Virginia.
Silas is described as a gentle giant, a shy loner who hates the fact that he scares people in the show created by Scott M. Gimple, which focuses on the first generation to grow up during the zombie apocalypse, co-starring Alexa Mansour, Nicolas Cantu, Aliyah Royale and Annet Mahendru.

Ben Geurens in ‘Locusts.’
Typifying the challenges facing the vast majority of Australian films, Heath Davis’ suspense-drama Locusts and Partho Sen-Gupta’s thriller Slam were released on a handful of screens last weekend.
Working with limited marketing budgets the distributors and producers relied primarily on reviews and publicity, and the weekend figures were commensurately modest.
Ben Geurens and Nathaniel Dean play estranged brothers who are the targets of an extortion racket in Locusts, which grossed $11,000 on 11 screens and $14,000 with previews.
Film Ink Presents is handling the theatrical release of the privately-financed film, which co-stars Jessica McNamee, Steve Le Marquand, Justin Rosniak, Andy McPhee, the late Damian Hill and Alan Dukes, while Jonathan Page’s Bonsai Films will sell the ancillary rights.

Doris Younane in ‘Five Bedrooms’
After years of fighting against being typecast as Lebanese or other Middle Eastern characters, actor Doris Younane is in a very happy place in her career.
She’s played a variety of characters, most of no specific ethnicity, in the past five years with recurring roles in Five Bedrooms, The Wrong Girl and Party Tricks plus guest appearances in Secret City, Harrow and Janet King.
“I just want to be seen as an actor in Australia,” she tells If. “I no longer want to be a pin-up for multiculturalism; I have passed that baton on to others. I’ve been really lucky. I think I am a good, solid actor and that’s what has got me through.”
Currently Younane is winning plaudits for her performance as the firebrand Heather in Five Bedrooms, Hoodlum Entertainment’s eight-part comedy-drama for Network 10 created by Christine Bartlett and Michael Lucas.

Michael Lucas and Christine Bartlett.
After years of creating fictional characters in such series as House Husbands, Offspring, The Wrong Girl and Playing for Keeps, Christine Bartlett allowed herself the freedom to do something unprecedented in Five Bedrooms.
Namely: To flesh out a character modelled on her own life and experiences.
Doris Younane plays her alter ego Heather in Hoodlum Entertainment’s 8-part comedy-drama co-created by Bartlett and her frequent collaborator Michael Lucas, which premieres on 10 at 8.40 pm on May 15.
The set-up director Peter Templeman describes Heather as “funny, complex and raw, and that’s Chris.”
Bartlett tells If: “Michael gave me permission to be totally unfiltered, so I went balls-out like never before. I was blown away watching what Doris did to bring the character to life.”
At the crossroads in her life, Heather is married to Colin (Alan Dukes), whom she says “peaked at high school,” and they have two doltish adult children.

Peter Templeman on set with Stephen Peacocke.
Director Peter Templeman rates Michael Lucas and Christine Bartlett as Australia’s pre-eminent creators of TV comedy-dramas.
So he jumped at the chance to serve as the set-up director of the duo’s Five Bedrooms, Hoodlum Entertainment’s 8-part series which premieres on 10 at 8.40 pm on May 15.
He could not be happier with the performances of the ensemble cast led by Kat Stewart, Stephen Peacocke, Doris Younane, Katie Robertson, Roy Joseph, Kate Jenkinson and Hugh Sheridan.

Actor and filmmaker Warwick Young is currently working with Aftrs to develop a film training program for veterans.
The news comes as Young, who completed active service in Iraq in 2006, was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (Oam) on Saturday for his service to veterans and their families.
To receive the Oam was humbling and unexpected, Young tells If, because his work with veterans “is something I do to give back to a community of people I think give us a lot.”
In 2013, Young was approached to advise the production of play ‘The Long Way Home’, a joint venture between the Sydney Theatre Company (Stc) and the Australian Defence Force (Adf). Together with wounded, injured, and ill defence personnel, the play was written and developed via a workshop at the Stc and then went on a national tour in 2014 with a cast of predominantly veterans who...

‘Backtrack Boys.’
Russell Crowe last week urged his 2.73 million Twitter followers to see Backtrack Boys in cinemas, lauding Catherine Scott’s feature documentary as really special and a great story.
A reasonable number of Crowe’s followers did so as Umbrella Entertainment launched the film as an alternate content release, which means exhibitors have the flexibility to run limited sessions.
Meanwhile writer-director Heath Davis’ drama Book Week began its staggered roll-out on eight screens via Bonsai Films.
Backtrack Boys examines a youth program run by rule-breaking jackaroo Bernie Shakeshaft (hailed by Crowe as a “good fella and a bit of a genius”) on the outskirts of Armidale Nsw. Voted as the top feature documentary at the Melbourne International Film Festival, the film collected $24,000 from one session on Saturday and Sunday on 44 screens, and $56,000 including festival screenings.
This opens theatrically in Australia on Thursday.
It’s really special.

Based in the Us for the past three years, Kieran Darcy-Smith had not seen the Jack Irish telepics when he was offered the gig as set-up director of the spin-off series starring Guy Pearce as a former criminal lawyer turned private investigator and debt collector.
After watching the telepics and reading the scripts for the 6-part ABC series by Andrew Knight, Matt Cameron and Andrew Anastasios, Darcy-Smith readily agreed.
In his first TV drama assignment, the director whose breakthrough was Wish You Were Here is directing two episodes and Mark Joffe and Daniel Nettheim are each helming two. Essential Media and Entertainment.s Ian Collie is the series producer.

Lust, Actually: Lawson’s Sexually Charged Debut Struggles with What Women Want
Taking home the audience prize at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival, Australian director Josh Lawson makes some decidedly risqué choices with his debut, The Little Death, which is basically an omnibus of alternative sexual practices rarely explored in the cinematic arena of the heterosexual. Mostly motivated by the complicated and sometimes controversial secret desires of women, the film, taking its name from the French idiom for orgasm, is sometimes refreshingly blunt as it navigates through several scenarios. However, it is just as often silly and unsubstantial, with an undefined purpose setting in as we close with an unseemly end to the common thread.
Maeve (Bojana Novakovic) and her boyfriend Paul (Lawson) set us off on in the circle. She’s getting her feet sucked, but confides after their bout of lovemaking her real fantasy involves being raped. Except she...

The Little Death
Written and directed by Josh Lawson
Australia, 2014
The Little Death is an Australian comedy concerning five hetero couples (or potential couple in one case), whose relationships become defined by their fetishes. Though the lives of some of these characters intertwine through the setup of them living in the same neighbourhood, the film is more anthology feature than network narrative in that the stories basically act as shorts that we jump in and out of for 95 minutes – and one of them runs uninterrupted for the final 20. Writer-director Josh Lawson even introduces each plot thread with a title card akin to what you might find in a more traditional anthology feature. This isn’t so much The ABCs of Sex, but the title of recent Argentinean anthology Wild Tales wouldn’t be out of place if re-applied to The Little Death.
Lawson definitely tries to be wild, anyway. His...

His...

*there are spoilers here. Director: Daniel Krige. Writers: Jonathon Green and Anthony O'Connor. Cast: Nicholas Hope, Kelly Paterniti, Sam Reid, Alan Dukes, James Mackay, and Hayley McElhinney. Redd Inc. is an Australian shot horror film, which was originally titled Inhuman Resources. This is truly an independent film, that was partially financed through crowd funding. Redd Inc. is also a tale of an office worker's worst nightmare. Thomas Reddmann keeps his five workers literally chained to their desks, while needling them to work harder. Shot primarily on one location, Redd Inc. can sometimes look drab, but the film's characterizations and especially the lead villain create for an exceptionally good time. Thomas Reddmann is accused of several axe-murders. Reddmann was able to escape the local mental rehabilitation unit, after he is found guilty. He puts his time to good use. Soon, Reddmann has abducted five characters, each of whom are involved in his case.

While looking back at my viewing for this year, I have seen a lot of genre films, and actually I have seen a lot of really good ones. I had been surprised quite a lot this year, and I wasn’t sure if anything else this could do that. I was proved wrong with Redd Inc. (Inhuman Resources is the Us title), not only did this film surprise me, but also it is one of the best genre films I have seen this year. This is a great film, not just a great genre film, there is so much to enjoy and embrace here.
Our storyline here is very intriguing, with a setting that is very brave and it works like a charm. Six people wake up chained in an office, to desks by a man named Thomas Reddmann (Nicholas Hope), an escaped killer. His...

The film sees a group of shoppers trapped in an underground supermarket after a tsunami strikes the coast which has sent a school of sharks into the building.
The film, produced by Arclight Films, was shot on the Gold Coast at Village Roadshow Studios in 2010. It stars Xavier Samuel, Julian McMahon, Sharni Vinson and Dan Wylie. It will be distributed in the Us by Anchor Bay Films.
The Out of Competition section is billed as ‘important works by directors already established in previous editions of the festival.’
While no Australian feature film made it into competition in the prized Venezia 69 program, two Australian short films will screen in competition in the Orizzonti program,...

The ABC’s latest political satire, At Home With Julia, wraps today. The series, which invites Australians into The Lodge and life of Prime Minister Gillard (Amanda Bishop) and her partner Tim Mathieson (Phil Lloyd) is set to air on ABC1 on Wednesday 7 September, 9.30pm.
The 4×30 minute series finds the Prime Minister and Mathieson struggling with alone time as they get harrassed by Bob Katter, live in fear of terrorist attacks and receive unsolicited advice from Paul Keating.
