“That which does not kill us makes us stronger,” reads the Nietzschean maxim that serves as epigraph for writer-director John Milius’s 1982 adaptation of Conan the Barbarian, thereby encouraging viewers to plumb the philosophical depths of this rousing sword-and-sorcery epic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger from the get-go. So it’s sort of ironic to consider that, given the film’s commercial success and subsequent cult status, Milius no doubt contributed to the seemingly endless proliferation of this slogan across multiple platforms, emblazoned on everything from motivational posters to coffee mugs.
Milius’s seriousness of intent is signaled from the opening scene when Conan’s father (William Smith) advises his young son (Jorge Sanz) to trust nothing in this world but his sword. Critics at the time believed this solipsistic bit of paternal advice to reflect the ruthless individualism of Reagan’s America. But things are a bit more complicated than that,...

Detailed Guide to ‘A Christmas Prince’ Film Series ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Films and TV shows do not always have to be profound, with a deeper meaning behind them. They don’t always have to have a conventional format, and they definitely do not always have to be life-changing experiences. And while many films out there aim for substance and depth, sometimes they can get a bit daunting and stressful. Which is why cheesy, guilty pleasure films exist. These are movies that just go for the cheese and clichés, no grand conclusions, no complexities whatsoever. They’re often so bad that it makes them good.
One such film series is the “A Christmas Prince” trilogy. It’s a Christmas romance that was first released in 2017, but apparently, one movie wasn’t enough, so they decided to turn it into a trilogy.

1984’s Conan the Destroyer was an attempt to soften Arnold Schwarzenegger’s titular barbarian into a PG-rated fantasy film hero. The result was a movie that was only a middling success in theaters, being overshadowed by Arnold’s other big 1984 movie, James Cameron’s The Terminator. Conan the Destroyer proved to be the last time Arnie would play Robert E. Howard’s Cimmerian icon, and in the decades since its release the movie’s reputation has been pretty atrocious. Hardcore fans prefer John Millius’s darker, R-rated Conan the Barbarian to Richard Fleischer’s lighter, family friendly version which seemed to owe a lot more to eighties fantasy movies like The Beastmaster than Millius’s original. It’s a deeply silly film, and one of the cheapest Schwarzenegger’s films of the eighties, with him essentially forced into making this and the following year’s Red Sonja to fulfil a...

DC Studios head James Gunn announced that a Swamp Thing movie will be part of the first slate of DC films he will be producing as he reboots the DC Universe. When people talk about the gold standard of superhero movies, they are often referring to "Superman." Even after all these years, the 1978 film remains the bar by which all other movies of the genre are judged. From John Williams' iconic score to the pitch perfect casting of Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder — not to mention its groundbreaking special effects — "Superman" truly made audiences believe a man could fly.
"Superman" and its sequel were largely shot back to back and while I do believe the first film is one of the greatest superhero movies ever made, "Superman II" was always my favorite growing up. The 1980 film had a notoriously troubled production, with Richard Donner being replaced by Richard Lester more than midway through -- though Donner's cut was released decades later. "Superman II" really upped the stakes of the first film and part of how it did that was by pitting...

Once upon a time, when there were just three major networks, the schedules would be filled with glossy, interesting, high-concept miniseries, usually aired during the vital November, February, and May sweeps periods when the ratings were used to set advertising rates. This is what gave us great concepts like ABC’s Roots or, in 1983, V.
Metro subways and bus stations were plastered that spring with red-suited people, wearing sunglasses and big smiles, wrapping their arms around ordinary folk and we were assured: “The Visitors are our Friends”. A few weeks later, they were replaced with replicas but now a spray-painted V covered them and we got a hint of the Visitors’ true, reptilian nature.
The V miniseries, wonderfully written and directed by Ken Johnson (he of Incredible Hulk fame) was a taut two-night affair that presented the aliens coming to Earth and befriending us before their true intentions were revealed and a resistance movement began.

Zoom! Pow! Zap! These are the familiar utterances of my childhood, as comic book heroes on the screen were given over to the less ethereal and the more pragmatic: diamond thieves, bank robbers, maybe the occasional mad scientist to remind you of the fantastical origins of the material. Wes Craven’s Swamp Thing (1982) had certain campy elements, but didn’t completely reach that sugar-coated rush I was looking for. Jim Wynorski’s The Return of Swamp Thing (1989), however, is overflowing with teeth-rotting material that my inner 10-year-old craves.

I guess there are plenty of adults now too young to remember when Christopher Reeve made his debut as The Man of Steel. It was a massive hit across the full spectrum of moviegoers. Grace Jones, the subject of Sophie Fiennes’ documentary Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami, which premiered Sept. 7 at Tiff, drew her first film-world blood with Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1984’s Conan the Destroyer.
In this sequel to the 1982 blockbuster Conan the Barbarian, Schwarzenegger was teamed up with basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain, Sarah Douglas (who had played Kryptonian villainess Ursa in a pair of Superman movies) and Jones. The Hollywood Reporter said the pairing made the film “a bit reminiscent of The Professionals mixed with The Wizard of Oz.” However, THR gushed over Jones, saying she “proves [to be] the movie’s...

These days he might be making nonsense like Amphibious Creature of the Deep, but Brian Yuzna’s directorial career began on a high with the excellent body horror satire Society, followed up by a good Re-Animator sequel. Then in 1993 came Return of the Living Dead 3, which, while not matching Dan O’Bannon’s 1985 original, goes some way to righting the wrongs of Part II.
Experiments with “Trioxin” gas began in 1969. The idea was to resurrect the dead and use them as a zombie army. It didn’t go so well, and now the cadavers are locked away in tanks in a temporary government facility. So – where was I last weekend? I was in Metropolis, that’s where, down in the Southern tip of Illinois attending the 39th Annual Superman Celebration. Way back in 1972 the city got DC’s permission to call itself Superman’s home and later that year the Illinois legislature passed a resolution confirming it. By the late 70s, the city decided to capitalize on all this by staging an annual Superman Celebration on the second weekend in June, a festival for the Man of Steel. Damn good idea, I sez.
The Celebration includes media guests connected with Supes. This year it was Margot Kidder, Dean Cain, James Marsters, and Sarah Douglas… as well as a few of us comic book types. I was the featured writer about six years ago and it seems I didn’t burn too many bridges because they had me back again this year along with Jimmy Palmiotti,...

Sure, we have all seen our share of an “Unstable Mabel” in cinema throughout the years. Some, more than others, do stand out in craziness, chaos and curiosity. These furious females in film–at least the ones that we will spotlight in this particular movie column–have something to their off-kilter filter that dares to dig deep on so many psychological levels of frivolity and fury.
In Hath No Fury Like a Woman Scorned: Top 10 Damaged Divas in the Movies we will examine some of the warped women on the big screen that have a sense of demented diva-like dimensions to their cockeyed characterizations. These mistresses of misbehaving all demonstrate various kinds of detachment and dysfunction that capture our puzzling imaginations. Are there perhaps even stronger and more memorable bombastic she-beasts that have a certain score to settle against their detractors or society as a whole? Of course. However, the...

Which blue-chip gallery has an artist roster that’s only 5 percent women? Which European institution devotes only 16 percent of its solo shows to female artists? And which New York museum does barely better than that, with just 20 percent of its shows devoted to female artists? All these questions are answered within the blisteringly statistics-filled essay by curator Maura Reilly that is the centerpiece of the new ARTnews Women in the Art World issue. It’s a feminist statement laid out calmly and intelligently, with a profile of Yoko Ono and a long section of personal essays by female artists rounding out the shocking revelations in the graphs and figures. But how did it all come together, and what effect will it have on the testosterone-washed art world? We spoke on the phone with ARTnews editor Sarah Douglas and Reilly, who acted as a guest contributing editor of the issue, about...

There are plenty of interesting directions a return to the Babylon 5 universe could take. Here are a few suggestions...
I read somewhere that J.M. Straczynski writes every day. That’s not surprising given his extensive body of work for television, motion pictures, novels and comics. He is best known for Babylon 5, of course. I remember what a lot of people used to say about Babylon 5, “How much can happen on a space station?” Well, a lot actually! And after five seasons of the original series, a bunch of made-for-tv movies and a couple of spin-offs, there are still plenty of stories left to tell.
That is why I was excited recently to read that Joe (apparently, he thinks you’re cool if you just call him Joe) was going back to work on Babylon 5. My excitement soon turned to dread when I found out that...

Legendary voice-over artist Hal Douglas, whose sonorous delivery starred in trailers for thousands of movies and documentaries, has died, his family said Thursday. Douglas, who was 89, died March 7 at his home in northern Virginia with his wife Ruth and daughter Sarah at his side, the family said in a written statement. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2010. While Douglas could probably walk down any street in the U.S. unrecognized, his voice was unmistakably a star. He was among the top voice-over artists of a generation, creating a career based on a rich baritone speaking voice that ranged from biblically epic to theatrically cheesy.

Voice-over artist Hal Douglas died of complications from pancreatic cancer on March 7. He was 89.
Hal Douglas Dies
Douglas’ daughter Sarah Douglas, an actor, confirmed her father’s passing to The New York Times. He passed away at his home in Lovettsville, Va.
Douglas lent his voice-over talents to trailers for Forrest Gump, Philadelphia, Meet the Parents and Lethal Weapon among others, according to TMZ. The movie trailers he worked on number into the thousands. Douglas was a master at changing up his voice to provide appropriate voice-overs for a wide variety of movies – from dramatic and action-packed films to the more comedic and light-hearted.
In 2002, he notably appeared in the trailer for Jerry Seinfeld’s documentary Comedian, engaging in a bit of wordplay rife with clichés as he attempted to provide the trailer’s voice-over.
Among his contemporaries, Douglas counted the late Don Lafontaine and Titanic trailer voice-over artist Don Morrow.

Man of Steel box office: Will latest Superman reboot break June domestic record? (Photo: Henry Cavill in Man of Steel) Directed by Zack Snyder, and starring Henry Cavill as Superman, Man of Steel had, as expected, a strong opening at the domestic box office on Thursday evening. The latest Superman reboot collected an estimated $12 million, in addition to another $9 million at midnight showings for a grand total of $21 million. For comparison’s sake: Starring Robert Downey Jr, Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 debuted with $15.6 million from Thursday evening / midnight showings in early May. (See also updated post: “Man of Steel Box Office: June Record Likely — Sort of.”) Now, to compare Man of Steel‘s Thursday late evening $21 million take to the midnight box-office grosses of, for instance, Gary Ross / Jennifer Lawrence’s The Hunger Games ($19.74 million), Robert Pattinson / Kristen Stewart / Taylor Lautner’s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ($30.1 million), Christopher Nolan...

Maybe it’s a coincidence, or maybe it’s something in the alignment of the planets, or maybe someone is actually traveling through time in order to ensure that the latest Fund This Film column spotlights two fortuitously headlined crowdfunding projects. As you’re probably aware, this summer we’re getting a new Superman movie (Man of Steel) and a new Wolverine movie (The Wolverine). What you’re probably not aware of at all, though, is that you also have an opportunity now to help out two new time travel films involving the theme of second chances that have nothing whatsoever to do with those two new superhero blockbusters. So why do I mention them if there’s no real link? Because there is still an interesting connection. One of the crowdfunding projects stars Sarah Douglas (pictured above), who played the villainess Ursa in Superman and Superman II. The other project is by the Swedish duo behind...

Richard LeParmentier, who is known to "Star Wars" fans the world over as General Motti from the 1977 film, has passed away at the age of 66, his family announced Tuesday (April 16). A statement from his children reads:
Every time we find someone's lack of faith disturbing, we'll think of him.
At age 66, Richard Le Parmentier is one with the Force. We're deeply grateful to the many devoted fans who have posted personal remembrances of our dad as a warm, genuine person with an unparalleled joie de vivre and gift for friendship (not to mention a mean petanque player). To his fans and friends, his lines were the ultimate power in the universe. He absolutely loved traveling the world and meeting his friends and fellow Star Wars fan - whose tributes have given us all the best lines in this message. Once touted as “the next Mary Lou Retton”, world-class gymnast Kristie Phillips may not have ever achieved that level of Olympic fame, but can Mary Lou Retton claim to have ever starred in a spy flick from the director of Cyborg and Brain Smasher… A Love Story?
Kristie Phillips' one and only acting role was as the heroine of Albert Pyun’s 1995 direct-to-video homage to classic spy movies of the 1960’s: Spitfire. Why Spitfire? Because she had fiery red hair, I suppose. Phillips’ character was that of – What else? – a world championship gymnast, the daughter of the world’s greatest spy, recruited into his world of international espionage after being targeted by a diabolical arch-criminal looking to get her hands on some Russian nuclear codes.

The Puppet Master series is very dear to my heart. Discovering the films many years ago as a teenager browsing the shelves of my local video store, I have grown up with the franchise, following it through thick and thin, good and bad… I’ve owned every iteration of the films on rental VHS, sell-thru VHS, DVD and now, thanks to the good folks at 88 Films, on Blu-ray.
Following the release of the original Puppet Master back in August, 88 Films are following up with the two immediate sequels, Puppet Master 2, which expanded the roster of puppets with one of my favourites, Torch, and Puppet Master 3: Toulon’s Revenge, which many consider to be the pinnacle of the series and which has since spawned two related sequels of its own in the recent “puppets vs. nazis” flicks Puppet Master: Axis of Evil and Puppet Master X: Axis Rising (which...

You have to wonder why The Asylum never thought of this one. It seems like a perfect fit. Nevertheless, Strippers vs. Werewolves is surprisingly good and much better than the title might suggest. Make no mistake though, it’s really a straight-up comedy, and a seriously goofy one at that. There is a smattering of gore but it never goes for scares.
One evening in London, a man finds himself in the mood for a private lap dance. He pays a visit to Vixens and finds himself alone with Justice (Adele Silva), a nice young stripper pretending to be a veterinary assistant. When the man suddenly turns into a werewolf and attacks, Justice stabs him in the eye with a silver pen, killing him.

Director Jonathan Glendening of 13Hrs werewolf notoriety doesn’t move that far away from his furry feral fiends in his latest grizzly flick, Strippers Vs Werewolves.
This exceptionally daft, tongue-in-cheek pastiche of the erotic slasher B-movie also taps into the comic-book filmmaking fascination of recent years with deviant glee, but all with the sole purpose of entertaining in the most blood spewing and badly acted way. And for those who never tire of Robert ‘Freddy’ Englund cameos, there’s a treat for fans too.
After werewolf Mickey (Martin Kemp) is accidentally killed in strip club Vixens, the girls who work there have until the next full moon to work out how to respond and defend themselves, before his bloodthirsty wolf pack, led by Jack Ferris (Billy Murray), work out who is responsible and seek murderous retribution.

A little over a year from now, the most iconic comic character in history will be back on screens, courtesy of Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel." Seven years on from Bryan Singer's oft-derided "Superman Returns," it'll see "The Dark Knight" mastermind Christopher Nolan producing a new, seemingly darker take on the character, to be played by Henry Cavill with Michael Shannon as his Kryptonian nemesis, General Zod.
But Shannon will have big shoes to fill: the last time the character was on the big screen it was played by Terence Stamp in 1981's "Superman II," still seen by many fans as not only the best take on that character, but the best screen version of Superman to date. Which was impressive, considering it had about as troubled a production history as you could ask for, with two directors, production stretched over two years, and a recent, wildly different reissue of the film.
