"Avatar: The Last Airbender" rose to a whole other level of greatness in its second, and some would say best, season. ("Book 2: Earth.") A lot of that comes down to two new characters the show introduced to its ensemble.
The heroes got a new teammate: Toph (Michaela Jill Murphy), the blind earthbending prodigy. But they also had a new threat to contend with: Fire Nation Princess Azula (Grey DeLisle), who was hunting both Avatar Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen) and her exiled brother Prince Zuko (Dante Basco). Smart, powerful, and ruthless, Azula is seemingly the "perfect princess." She's a firebending prodigy and success comes naturally to her.
Another detail that sets Azula apart is her firebending. In "Avatar," where people can bend one of the four classical elements, Firebenders transmute fire out of their own breath and chi and then control the flames.

Jason Isaacs once again wowed fans with his brilliant performance in The White Lotus, and it was his other sinister performance that actually inspired the character of Commander Zhao in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Turns out that the character was directly inspired by Isaacs’ performance in The Patriot.
Jason Isaacs would actually go on to play Commander Zhao, who was one of the most ruthless characters in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. With little to no regard for how the natural world works, Zhao might have been the perfect Fire Nation soldier, but was definitely one of the worst offenders in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Avatar: The Last Airbender was able to deliver one of the best redemption arcs in all of fiction, specifically when it came to the story of Prince Zuko. There is an entire section of the fandom that believes that his sister, Princess Azula, was not someone who deserved a similar arc.
This was often attributed to the fact that Azula was a lot more ruthless and ‘evil’ when compared to Zuko, which the creators of the show have largely attributed to her having a troubled relationship with her mother. They have also come out with statements that point towards Azula’s possible redemption, given that the creators believe that she is not truly evil.

One upcoming series set in the Avatar: The Last Airbender world just got a definitively disappointing update. Several new Atla projects are coming down the pipe in the next few years, but one of the most intriguing is Avatar: Seven Havens. The new series will be set after the events of Legend of Korra, and will follow an unnamed earthbending Avatar who is viewed as humanity’s destroyer, not its savior. There had been no word on an official release date for the series, but the most recent issue of Toy World Magazine features a Paramount section, which confirms that the show will not debut until 2027 at the earliest. Seven Havens will be created by original Atla scribes Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, and casting information has yet to be revealed.

Avatar: Seven Havensfinally has a release window, but unfortunately, it might take longer than people were hoping. In celebration of Avatar’s 20th anniversary, a new Avatar show was finally confirmed to be in development, with it following the Earthbender Avatar after Korra as she looks for her twin in a post-apocalyptic world that sees the Avatar as a symbol of destruction as opposed to an envoy of peace.
Fans have been waiting over a decade for the next Avatar show following Legend of Korra, but unfortunately, they will have to keep waiting a little longer. The May 2025 issue of Toy World Magazine featured a section of Paramount’s upcoming projects, and accordingly, Avatar: Seven Havens was confirmed to have a 2027 release window, putting its release at least two years off from the time of writing. While it wasn't without its issues, Netflix's live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender has been renewed through to conclusion, a rare feat for shows on the streamer nowadays. The remake was a darker, grittier take on the beloved animated series. It condensed the original story quite substantially, dropping some storylines altogether and blending arcs. The way it was adapted for live-action has its benefits and drawbacks, but overall it worked out pretty well.
The remake was announced way back in 2018. It underwent various changes (not least of all original series creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko dropping out) before it ultimately premiered in 2024. The show had an enormous production that utilized some of the most groundbreaking technologies in filmmaking. It's now been over a year since the debut season dropped, and fans are expecting updates on the status of season 2. In short: don't expect any new episodes this year.

Turns out, not all casting calls need auditions. Sometimes, pure greatness just walks in. Back when the creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender were assembling their dream team, one voice actor brought so much heat, they didn’t even bother with a test run. While Jason Isaacs had to earn his stripes as Zhao, this particular legend skipped the line entirely.
The performance was that iconic, locking down the role before a single word was spoken into a mic. And yep, it paid off. Because that voice? It practically bent its way into animation history.

Fire. Air. Water. Earth. Long ago, a television series won over the hearts of audiences across the globe. A world where elements could be bent, spirits could cross over, and hodgepodges of animals roamed free. In this world, one such bender bridged the spirit world to the material while wielding each of nature’s elements: The Avatar.
From Avatar: The Last Airbender to Avatar: Legend of Korra, fans were treated to adventures that explored the depths of its characters and expanded on the world-building. Just as Aang set out to restore harmony and Korra endured subsequent threats to the world’s natural state, the new avatar must find their direction.
Announced on February 20, 2025, Nickelodeon's Avatar: Seven Havens left fans with several questions about its premise. In a post-apocalyptic world, the new Avatar must contend with legions of upset spirits and humans on her journey to destiny. The world blames the Avatar for the disarray.

Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender is regarded as one of the very best animated series of all-time. Created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, the show was more than just another series aimed at young audiences: it was full of deeply emotional storytelling, covering themes of war, oppression, grief, and moral ambiguity.
Because of its incredible world-building and multi-faceted story, Avatar was always a top contender for a live-action adaptation. And that's exactly what it got...but the results were mixed. For instance, legendary director M. Night Shyamalan attempted to adapt the series to the big screen with The Last Airbender in 2010, but the results were disastrous. The movie was awful; look no further than its 5% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
This brings us to Netflix's live-action remake, which aired its first season in 2024. Despite Dimartino and Konietzko dropping out of the project early on due to creative differences,...

Created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, Nickelodeon'sAvatar: The Last Airbender still astounds viewers more than two decades after its premiere; fans instantly resonated with this world of elemental benders and dangerous spirits, with the unbearable burdens of its protagonist, Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen), teaching them the value of community in the face of hatred. It was a beautiful narrative many were gutted to see end after three seasons, but luckily, this world's intricate story continued in the sequel seriesThe Legend of Korra. And now we know that it will be fleshed out even further in the recently announced follow-up, Avatar: Seven Havens.

Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Zach Tyler Eisen -- the voice actor for Aang for the original Nickelodeon animated series -- has discussed the show's impact two decades later, as well as its somewhat divisive Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action remake on Netflix. According to Eisen, the producers had "a very hard job in trying to remake this beloved cartoon from a lot of people's childhoods."
Per a Cbr interview with Eisen at MegaCon Orlando 2025, the 2024 live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender was "great," but "wasn't exactly what the cartoon was, because you can't just do that." Eisen also stated, "They have a very hard job in trying to remake this beloved cartoon from a lot of people's childhoods, and you're going to inevitably not satisfy everybody. But they were bold enough to take some risks with it, and I think it paid off."

Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko co-created the beloved Nickelodeon animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender back in 2005. The series ran for three seasons, quickly garnering a devoted fanbase and establishing itself as one of the very best animated shows of all time.
Back in 2012, Avatar got a sequel series, The Legend of Korra, which was also an enormous success. Since then, however, further installments in the beloved series have been scant. Fans have seen the story expand through numerous comic books and novels. But in terms of animation projects, it's been silent.

'We Had Other Ideas': Avatar: The Last Airbender Creator Reveals the Story's Original Comedy Concept

In a recent reveal, the co-creator of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, Michael Dante Dimartino, made it clear that the series was initially envisioned as a very different kind of story than what fans have come to know and love.
These details came to light in a new episode of The Illustration Department Podcast, where Dimartino spoke about how The Last Airbender was originally intended to be a "kids in the woods comedy." According to Dimartino, the series came as an assignment from Nickelodeon executives, who were looking for a new action-adventure show. Dimartino and his co-creator, Bryan Konietzko, reportedly started working on their ideas together, initially conceptualizing the series as a "kids hanging out in the woods comedy kind of thing." Dimartino went on to state that the first concept was "actually very simple, because we wanted to make a show that had fun, charming stories.

When two Japanese anime characters form a duo, those characters either complete one another or challenge each other, and there is always a sense of co-dependency. In a trio, however, there are ongoing tensions, a strong sense of competition, and rivalry that can also become jealousy, making the whole group much more interesting. However, many of the most iconic trios, such as Jesse, James and Meowth and Winry, Alphonse and Edward, have an underlying current of true care.
There are many iconic trios in the anime world, some composed entirely of villains, others of heroes, and some a mix of the two. Some trios are strong and determined main characters; others feature shy and quiet protagonists; still others are made of remarkable side characters. All these trios have one thing in common: they make the story unique and truly memorable.

Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when "Avatar: The Last Airbender" premiered in 2005. Since then, animation hasn't been the same. The Nickelodeon cartoon, as created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, takes place in a fantasy world inspired by Asian culture and mythology. At the center of its story is Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen), the latest incarnation of the Avatar and, as such, the only living being capable of wielding all four elements and stopping the evil Fire Lord Ozai before he can conquer the world.
It didn't take long for "Avatar: The Last Airbender" to set itself apart from other action-heavy animated shows in its day on its way to becoming one of the best and most unique American cartoons of all time. Alongside "Teen Titans," "Avatar" helped popularize anime-inspired cartoons in the West and started discussions among...

Set in an Asian-inspired setting and having various other Asian elements, the story follows the journey of twelve-year-old Aang, the current Avatar, who can bend all four elements— water, earth, fire, and air. However, the story is not restricted to Aang but features dynamic characters and side stories that add to the narration’s richness, keeping it fresh and intriguing.
While in the world of Avatar, these supporting stories have generated a lot of buzz and intrigue, few have intrigued fans as much as...

Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender Star Reveals What Fans Can Expect From Live-Action Toph Beifong

Some things about Toph in Avatar: The Last Airbender will be slightly different, while others will remain entirely the same.
During an interview with Pacific Rim Video Press at the 2024 Unforgettable Gala, Miya Cech talked about her upcoming role in Netflix's Avatar series and what fans can expect from the iconic blind Earthbender's live-action debut. "She's a little bit older so she's not, like, a little kid anymore," Cech acknowledged regarding the character's age, though she assured the interviewer that Toph Beifong's trademark sass would be kept fully intact. "She is still that same spitfire, kind of spunky and she gets to call a certain someone 'Twinkle Toes' quite a bit" she continued, later adding, "I think there are going to be a lot of things that the fans are going to remember from the animated series and a lot of things that they're going to be excited...

If there’s one thing that makes for a good cosplay, it's an iconic character, and Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender definitely fits that description. The best characters for cosplay are immediately recognizable by a few key features that can then be reimagined according to each cosplayer’s artistry. The great number of beautiful Zuko cosplays that can be found on the Internet or strolling around conventions all over the world are also a testament to the longevity of the Avatar: The Last Airbender fandom, as well as its continuous creativity and engagement.
The show created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimartino first aired in 2005, and Zuko has been a pretty prominent part of the story ever since the beginning. He went from being an antagonist to a trusted ally of Avatar Aang and his friends, in a beautifully written character arc that viewers can’t wait to...

After the major success of Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender, the creative team decided to make a sequel series set in the same universe of elemental benders. Under the direction of original creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, the sequel show The Legend of Korra debuted in April 2012. The show follows a young Water Tribe woman named Korra, who is the next Avatar in the cycle following the death of Aang. Across four seasons, Korra progresses from a hot-headed, impulsive girl into a spiritual, fully realized Avatar ready for the next phase of her life.
While The Last Airbender was aimed at children, this series appealed to teens, introducing more complex romantic side plots and more brutal fight scenes. It even reintroduced older versions of familiar characters from the original story, such as Katara, Toph, and Iroh, as Korra's guides, maintaining the connection to Aang's life. Sadly, compared to its companion series,...
