In “We Strangers,” Rayelle (Kirby) confesses to her mother (Tina Lifford) that she doesn’t have dreams. Perhaps she doesn’t have time for them, or else she’s simply too exhausted to hang onto anything else in her head after spending her days as a cleaning lady, monitoring her every move so as not to become any part of the mess she picks up for other people. Still, this isn’t to say she can’t have fantasies in Anu Valia’s absorbing character study, except like everything else her life, they’re not for herself when her observational skills lead some to think she’s psychic.
After honing her craft directing prestige TV shows such as “The Afterparty” and “Shrill,” Valia makes an aesthetically striking feature debut that may impress even more with the clear eyes she brings to the trickle effect of privilege, envisioning the ability to...

Why are cleaners expected to be dowdy and dull? Ray (Kirby) is a naturally glamorous woman, striking even in her work clothes. When Jean (Maria Dizzia) first sees her, there’s an anguished look in her eyes and one wonders if, just for a moment, she’s wondering if Ray is Dr. Patel’s new mistress, if she’s been replaced. She’s on the outside, banging on the French windows for attention. Ray is on the inside, confident and serene. It’s a little taste of power. There will be more to come.
Dr. Patel (Hari Dhillon), a podiatrist with an apparently lucrative private practice, is pleased with Ray’s work – so much so that he asks her to clean his house, too, and Jean’s house. The latter, to Ray’s surprise, is also occupied by Jean’s husband Ed (Paul Adelstein), who initially makes his presence felt...

It’s hard to imagine the Gary, Indiana janitorial community having many savvier political operators than Ray Martin (Kirby Howell-Baptiste). The commercial custodian knows that she’s every bit as smart as the people whose messes she spends her days cleaning up, but she takes bits of joy in adapting to whatever environment she ends up being thrust into. But at the start of “We Strangers,” Anu Valia’s feature directorial debut that seems destined to be one of the breakout hits of SXSW 2024, she finds herself in a puzzling situation that even she can’t quite wrap her mind around.
In the middle of one of her shifts cleaning the office of Dr. Neeraj Patel (Hari Dhillon), the wealthy therapist propositions her to become his personal housekeeper. It’s not immediately clear why he took an interest in her, but she accepts the curious gig with the hope of making a little extra money.

Bad Education can currently be viewed on HBO
Review by Stephen Tronicek
If the standard of a great scene is one where you can watch the external action and see everything going on within the internal life of the characters, then every scene in Cory Finley’s sophomore feature, Bad Education, is a great one. Whether it be the cast, the editing, the direction, or the sound, what Finley’s debut feature, Thoroughbreds was missing in subtlety Bad Education has in spades. It’s one of the most satisfying films over the year.
Admittedly, Bad Education is the type of story you can’t help but fall in love with. Follows the true story of the investigation of a huge embezzlement scheme at Roslyn High School in 2002, perpetrated by Frank Tassone (Hugh Jackman) and Pam Gluckin (Allison Janney), uncovered by a student at Roslyn who “followed the money,” (Geraldine Viswanathan...

"What is going on??" "They opened up a portal to Hell!" Universal 1440 Entertainment has just debuted the first brief teaser trailer Doom: Annihilation, another new live-action Doom movie arriving some 14 years after the original attempt at adapting the classic video game. This one is heading straight-to-vod, skipping theaters entirely, but has a major producer behind it (Lorenzo di Bonaventura of the Transformers series) and doesn't look that cheap. Described as an "intense action-packed" thriller, the sci-fi action horror movie is about a group of space marines who land on a Martian moon, but "discover it's been overrun by demonic creatures who threaten to create Hell on Earth." Of course. Starring Amy Manson, Dominic Mafham, Luke Allen-Gale, Hari Dhillon, Jemma Moore, and Nina Bergman. There isn't much footage so far, but it does look pretty cool. Some big guns, some cool sets, might not turn out too bad. I'd like to see more.

It’s no secret that Sgt. Olivia Benson is married to her work. But in this week’s Law & Order: Svu, she seriously considers a conscious uncoupling.
The episode, “Next Chapter,” opens with Tucker delivering some big news over a romantic dinner with Liv: He’s planning to retire, “to smell the damn flowers.” Olivia is taken aback, but he presses her to really think about what she wants out of the rest of her life. The notion of not being a cop seems to leave her a little unsettled.

The Hollywood Reporter says the series has received a script commitment from the network, and will move the action to San Francisco instead of New York. Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh starred in the 1992 original about a woman named Allison (Fonda) who takes in Hedra (Leigh) as a roommate, only to have her turn into a full-on psycho stalker. The iconic moment came when Allison discovered Hedra had copied her exact haircut and wardrobe — the birth of the term “single white female’d.

We were all hoping that the London production of Lillian Hellman's The Children's Hour would mark Keira Knightley's Broadway debut (she got great reviews in 2011 starring opposite Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss), but we'll take her however we can get her. Next fall, she will make her Broadway debut in Roundabout Theatre Company's adaptation of the tragic novel Thérèse Raquin, continuing with Knightley's affinity for period dramas. In other news, Big Brother standout Frankie J. Grande (the bro of another famous Grande, Ariana) will take on a supporting role in Rock of Ages for two months beginning Nov.

This story first appeared in the Oct. 24 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. "It's Ok — if one of us should fall, it should be me!" jokes playwright Ayad Akhtar, leaning precariously over a balcony railing before posing for a photo with his play's marquee draws, Gretchen Mol, 41, and Josh Radnor, 40. As they horse around, one wouldn't guess that Akhtar's Pulitzer-winning Disgraced contains some of the most challenging scenes on Broadway this year. Holby City newcomer Sasha Behar has revealed that her character Alex Broadhurst will be very different to her classic Coronation Street role as 'Mad' Maya Sharma. The actress, who portrayed Maya between 2003 and 2004, appears on Holby from next week. Viewers will see new consultant Alex arrive at the hospital as part of a storyline for established regular Michael Spence (Hari Dhillon). Behar told What's On TV of Alex's personality: "She's a high-flyer, who's proved everything she needs to prove and is just there to do the best job she can. She certainly hasn't come in to put anyone's nose out of joint. "Alex and Michael are on a collision course the moment they meet. A conman who netted $30 million (£18.7 million) by targeting actor Danny Glover and a civil rights group is facing up to 20 years in jail.
Samuel Cohen, 53, approached Lethal Weapon star Glover when the actor was a director of the Vanguard Public Foundation in 2002, offering to allow the organisation to profit from a Microsoft buyout of his software company.
Glover introduced Cohen to Vanguard president Hari Dillon, and they eventually invested a total of $30 million in Cohen's company - but the Microsoft deal didn't exist and Cohen was no longer even working for the business he claimed was about to be sold.
A court in San Francisco, California heard Cohen spent the profits of the scam on flashy cars, priceless gems, private jets, and a luxury home.
On Wednesday, he was found guilty of 29 counts of fraud, tax evasion and money laundering. He is due to be sentenced in February.
