Exclusive: Drama writer-producer JJ Bailey is expanding his relationship with Universal Television. Bailey has signed an exclusive overall deal with the studio, a division of Universal Studio Group, to develop and produce projects across all platforms. He has set his first project under the deal, The Hunting Party, a high-concept crime procedural which he is developing with The Endgame co-creator Jake Coburn for NBC.
Written by Bailey, The Hunting Party revolves around a small team of investigators who are assembled to track down and capture the most dangerous killers our country has ever seen, all of whom have just escaped from a top-secret prison that’s not supposed to exist.
Bailey and Coburn executive produce.
Bailey previously created two projects for Utv that went to pilot at NBC, Getaway with Moira Kirland and Echo with Davis Entertainment.

Exclusive: NBC has opted not to proceed with its drama pilot Getaway. Headlined by Annie Ilonzeh, it starred two leads of recently canceled broadcast series that have since been resurrected, Manifest’s Matt Long and All Rise‘s Marg Helgenberger. Both actors are now available to do other shows, including their old ones, which both have been picked up for 20 episodes. Meanwhile, NBC’s other drama pilot, Dangerous Moms, remains in contention.
I hear Long is in talks about rejoining Manifest as a series regular though it is unclear if a deal will be reached. The missing plane drama was picked up for a fourth season by Netflix in August following its cancellation by NBC.
“I will be back for some of it, we’re just trying to find out the maximum I can do,” Long said backstage at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards last month when he was still attached to Getaway.

Matt Long, Marg Helgenberger, Jasmine Mathews (The Rookie, Sweetbitter) and E.J. Bonilla (Bull, Unforgettable) are the latest additions to Getaway, NBC‘s drama pilot about a destination wedding gone very wrong.
Hailing from The Blacklist EPs John Davis and John Fox and writers JJ Bailey and Moira Kirland, Getaway follows a destination wedding at an isolated luxury resort that quickly spirals into chaos when a group of dangerous criminals takes the island hostage. The small RSVP list of guests, led by a fearless female Army vet (Chicago Fire‘s Annie Ilonzeh), in turn do everything they can to stay alive.

‘Manifest’s Matt Long, Marg Helgenberger, Jasmine Mathews & E.J. Bonilla Cast In ‘Getaway’ NBC Pilot
Amid talks about a new season of Manifest, one of the canceled NBC series’ core cast members, Matt Long, has booked a new pilot at the network but fans of the missing plane drama should not be too worried about it. Long, CSI alumna Marg Helgenberger, Jasmine Mathews (The Rookie) and E.J. Bonilla (The Old Man) are set as series regulars opposite Annie Ilonzeh in NBC drama pilot Getaway, from The Blacklist duo John Davis and John Fox and Universal TV, a division of Universal Studios Group.
I hear Long was approached about Getaway after the options on the Manifest cast expired last month and studio Warner Bros. Television ended its efforts to find a new home for the show after conversations with Netflix did not yield an agreement. Annie Ilonzeh is set as the lead in NBC drama pilot Getaway, from The Blacklist duo John Davis and John Fox and Universal TV, a division of Universal Studios Group.
Written and executive produced by JJ Bailey (Echo) and Moira Kirland (Madam Secretary), Getaway centers on a destination wedding at an isolated luxury resort that quickly descends into chaos after a group of dangerous criminals takes the island hostage. The small group of guests, led by a fearless female Army vet (Ilonzeh), will do everything they can to stay alive.
Ilonzeh’s Tessa Carrillo is a physically tough Army medical vet who at 18 put her career dreams on hold after her parents died to take care of her younger sister, Grace. Although the siblings are now on different paths, with Grace marrying a political scion, Tessa is attending her wedding in the hopes she can relax and reconnect with her sister.

It’s seven years since then-Fox chief Kevin Reilly declared “Rip pilot season”.
Today, NBC chiefs Susan Rovner and Frances Berwick were the latest top broadcast executives to declare the traditional cycle dead with the network looking to replace it with a “52-week scheduling mindset”.
Rovner, who is Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, speaking at the unveiling of its fall schedule, said that the Covid-19 pandemic has ignited this change.
“The unique circumstances of this year have made us relook at how we approach the traditional broadcast pilot season and I really think it’s going to benefit all of us. Rather than competing each year with other networks for the best directors, best actors and best writing staff all in the same small window, we’re now going to be able to take the time to make the best show, period,” she said.

Call it the pilot season that wasn’t. One year later, the Covid-19 pandemic is still casting a long shadow over the new crop of broadcast shows.
Across the Big Five networks, the majority of the pilots in contention this year are holdovers from 2020. The backlog is still being sorted out, underscoring the disruption of last spring when the public health crisis shut down work for months just as pilot production would have normally reached its peak. Some projects were scrapped and some are only now going before the cameras.
Studio and agency sources say they expect this to translate into fewer new series pickups this year, with the broadcasters largely expected to renew their existing lineups like they did last year. This year has also broken with precedent in that several networks have already made multiple series pickups a month out from upfronts, the annual broadcast showcase that typically...

NBC has greenlighted two pilot orders – a wedding island disaster thriller exec produced by The Blacklist duo John Davis and John Fox and a bank heist drama exec produced by Julie Plec.
The moves mark the first pilot orders in 2021 by the network – coming after the Covid-19 pandemic threw the 2020-21 development season into chaos with many pilot projects being unable to be filmed until this year and networks moving out of the traditional buying patterns.

The show’s one and only season aired between May and August earlier this year. The series starred Harriet Dyer as Cassie, a woman who is able to see visions of the past and future as well as communicate with the dead. She uses her gifts to help her detective father solve a number of dark and puzzling murders.

Charlotte Sieling served as executive producer and directed the pilot. It was produced by Universal Television, NBCU International Television Studio, and Heyday Television.
“The InBetween” ran for 10 episodes over the summer, averaging around 2.6 million viewers in Live+Same Day while seeing little lift in delayed viewing.

NBC is closing the loop on its new spring-summer 2019 scripted series by cancelling freshman drama The InBetween.
The news is not surprising. The InBetween, starring Harriet Dyer, did not debut until after the end of the 2018-19 broadcast season. It was the lowest-rated NBC summer 2019 series in Live+Same Day ratings, something for which delayed viewing bumps could not compensate.
The InBetween‘s core creative team already has moved on to another project. In a competitive situation with multiple networks bidding, CBS in September landed with penalty Queens, a police drama from The InBetween creator/executive producer Moira Kirland, executive producer Matt Gross and studio Universal TV, where Gross is under an overall deal.
The InBetween joins NBC’s new midseason 2019 series, comedy Abby’s and dramas The Village and The Enemy Within, which also were canceled after one season.
The InBetween centered on Cassie Bedford (Dyer), who was born with a rare ability.

There’s something to be said for a TV show that knows exactly what its lane is and fulfills its duties enough to hold together. NBC’s “The InBetween,” Moira Kirland’s new procedural billed as a “paranormal drama,” is a fan of just about every procedural cliche in the book, right down to the cheesy music following everyone between obvious cliffhangers. It wastes no time checking off the boxes that its genres of choice require, especially in regards to its bland cast of characters. Mysterious blonde (Harriet Dyer) with mysterious powers? Check. Square-jawed detective (Paul Blackthorne) with a cocky new partner (Justin Cornwell)? Check and check. Domestic violence crimes with a heaping side of nonsensical twists? Oh yeah, that’s a check.
Every so often, “The Inbetween” shows signs of slightly more individual life than its basic parts would suggest. That square-jawed detective has an equally square-jawed husband and a daughter,...

The 2018 pilot season is shaping up to be a landmark year for women behind the camera.
Female creators and directors saw gains virtually across the board, as networks ramp up efforts to include more women in the pilot process. As Variety previously reported, the Time’s Up and Me Too movements have played important roles this season, with the networks all looking for ways to increase female representation.
According to multiple TV literary agents who spoke with Variety, there was a clear shift within the networks this year to increase the number of women behind the camera, particularly in the director’s chair. One source also noted that the studios exerted “immense pressure” to increase the number of female directors this season.
ABC has 13 female creators on 9 of their 23 pilots this year, up from 9 creators in 2017. Of those, five are comedies, including originals from Liz Meriwether and J.J. Philbin, Diablo Cody,...

When it first hit the small screen in October 2011, American Horror Story may have seemed like a risky prospect. Conceived as an anthology horror series featuring a repertory cast, the subject matter was necessarily dark and challenging. Against all odds, however, it quickly became a critical success, enjoying impressive ratings and much excitement surrounding the premise of each new subsequent season.
Season one was set in the present day in a haunted house, season two in 1964 in an asylum for the criminally insane, and season three took place in the present day, the 1970s and the 1830s, as it followed the descendants of survivors of the Salem witch trials. Arrow, Season 1, Episode 4: “An Innocent Man”
Directed by Vincent Misiano
Written by Moira Kirland and Lana Cho
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm Et on The CW
The bulk of episode 4 continues Arrow’s quest to take down the evil businessmen whose names appear on “The List”. Only Oliver takes his job one step further as he attempts to exonerate, Peter Declan, an innocent man on death row for allegedly killing his wife.
Anyone who’s been following Arrow since the start can clearly identify the show’s recipe: Hokey voiceover, top notch archery-inspired action sequences, a few flashbacks, deep focus on Stephen Amell’s abs, sexually frustrated antics between Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) and Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy), a common corporate-villain-of-the week, and a cliffhanger that is somehow either tied to Arrow’s identity, or the conspiracy involving Moira Queen (Susanna Thompson) and her husbands death. Did I miss anything?...
