In 2015, two years before #MeToo, the porn industry severed ties with its golden boy, James Deen. Three days after the “kinky feminist” with boy-next-door good looks was accused of sexual assault by three women, major studios Evil Angel and Kink.com cut all financial ties with him. While its content includes “consensual and exploratory aggressive and rough sex,” a representative for Evil Angel said Deen’s behavior was “contrary to [the] company values.” Deen was a porn star with mainstream crossover appeal who was known and celebrated for performing hardcore sex, yet the porn industry saw no gray area when it came to consent.
That’s a concept Hollywood still can’t seem to grasp. “The Deuce,” a television show about sex, sex work, and the porn industry, did nothing about the allegations against its own golden boy actor and executive producer, James Franco, who stands accused of sexual assault or misconduct by five different women.

Over the past three decades, novelist Bret Easton Ellis has dealt in ultraviolence, casual nihilism and the skewering of America’s superficialities. With his last book, Imperial Bedrooms approaching its 10-year anniversary, it began to seem that Ellis was spinning his wheels. With several savagely reviewed screenwriting ventures in recent years — the 2013 Lindsay Lohan/James Deen erotic thriller The Canyons didn’t exactly set the world on fire — the Bret Easton Ellis brand might not hold as much commercial clout as it once did. However, in his 54th year, Ellis is happy.

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Paul Schrader's The Canyons (2013) is showing July 14 - August 13, 2018 in the United Kingdom.Dyspeptic and sleazy and often as thick-headed as the selfish, solipsistic assholes around which its languid narrative unfurls, Paul Schrader’s The Canyons presents an unprecedented and unmitigated perspective on Hollywood’s toxic affluence, as judgmental as it is enamored of the iniquitous lives it depicts. It is a mess, certainly, but a fascinating, sometimes brilliant one, and necessary—a bizarre coalescence of influences and talents representative of and germane to the obsessions of its progenitors. Directed by Schrader and written by Bret Easton Ellis, the film has at its core a generational dichotomy, an insider’s sense of debasement filmed with a surveyor's inquisitiveness. (Few are as deft as Ellis at disemboweling the bilious lives of the Hollywood elite.) This tension between artists pervades the film,...

Farrah Abraham is opening up about her experience following her sex tape. As E! News previously reported back in 2013, the 26-year-old reality star appeared in a video with porn star James Deen, one that she claimed was never meant to go public. Following the alleged leak, Abraham quickly signed a deal with adult-film producer Vivid Entertainment to distribute the video. In a new interview with Mv Mag while appearing as the centerfold in their March 2018 issue, Abraham is speaking out about the tape while revealing just how her involvement within the adult entertainment industry first came about. "I have to emphasize that I didn't intentionally decide to work in the adult industry," she said....

The battle between Farrah Abraham and Teen Mom isn’t over yet.
After announcing she was “moving on” from the MTV series last month, blasting the show as “hateful” and “horrible,” the reality star is taking legal action, suing parent company Viacom for $5 million.
According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Abraham claims she was fired because of her decision to work in the adult entertainment industry. The 26-year-old previously released sex tapes with Vivid Entertainment in 2013 and 2014 with porn star James Deen, and since then, she has done adult webcam shows and appearances at strip clubs. She has also endorsed sex toys.

Lindsay Lohan. James Deen. Bret Easton Ellis. Paul Schrader. It isn’t so much a case of one of these things not being like the other, as much as none of them sharing a single common strand of DNA, such that a film involving all of them will invariably go one of two ways – an alluring curio, or an unmitigated train-wreck.
This $250,000 experimental film, rolling out on VOD platforms this week, is one which scribe Ellis himself has decried as a “languorous” interpretation of his screenplay, yet the director’s inexplicable effort nevertheless allows the perceived misogyny of the author’s work to run painfully amok throughout.
Self-reflexive to a point, The Canyons examines the lack of actual creativity that drives Hollywood, as the future of a movie project hinges on the whim of sexually possessive movie producer Christian (Deen). He casts young up-and-comer Ryan (Nolan Gerard Funk) in a role,...

Paul Schrader is no stranger to making headlines for his work; after all, the 67-year-old has written controversial films like Taxi Driver and The Last Temptation of Christ, and as a director, he's helmed sexually provocative films including American Gigolo, Hardcore, and Auto Focus. Still, nothing before in Schrader's career has ever reached the notorious headline highs of his latest film, The Canyons. A tabloid staple since its inception, The Canyons pairs troubled actress Lindsay Lohan with porn star James Deen in a script penned by American Psycho provocateur Bret Easton Ellis; the actual plot of the movie (rich, empty Hollywood types engage in a game of sexual manipulation) is almost secondary to the larger narrative that surrounded its troubled making, a narrative immortalized in a hilarious, candid New York Times production diary last January. With The Canyons finally debuting this Friday, we got Schrader on the phone to discuss...

Lindsay Lohan's latest big-screen comeback has run afoul of the critics, as the early word on The Canyons is that it borders on being the kind of bad, superfluous moviemaking its supposedly critiquing. One of the first microbudgeted films from established Hollywood talent, this collaboration between veteran director Paul Schrader and novelist Bret Easton Ellis has garnered mostly negative reviews—not least of which are the knocks the picture has taken for failing to dream up interesting sex scenes despite the pairing of the troubled starlet with real-life porn star James Deen. Lucky for Lohan, she did have at least one champion in Variety, which dared compare her performance to Marlon Brando's...

Porn star James Deen begins his assault on the mainstream with the release of "The Canyons" on Aug. 2, but don't expect to see Deen in the next big blockbuster from director Michael Bay. Deen, who plays the male lead in Paul Schrader's new film opposite Lindsay Lohan, slammed Bay as common trash in a new interview.
“You make that mass-produced, Hollywood blockbuster crap, you end up with Michael Bay's 'Transformers 11,'" Deen told the New York Post. "He's garbage, but his movies make lots of money. [...] [I was interested in] making a good movie and not bowing to the capitalist theory of Hollywood."
To that end, Deen told the Post that he isn't interested in leaving the XXX world behind. “People talk to me like this is my big crossover to the mainstream. Absolutely not,” Deen told the Post. "I have no desire to leave porn."
Indeed, those comments were echoed by Schrader.

Lindsay Lohan is hoping to promote her new film The Canyons at the Venice Film Festival, according to reports.
The Canyons is written by Bret Easton Ellis and directed by American Gigolo's Paul Schrader, and will screen at the August festival.
Lohan is hoping to make her first public appearance since leaving rehab in Venice, according to the New York Post's PageSix.
The actress has not yet confirmed her attendance at the screening, but is expected to make a final decision once she finishes her court-ordered treatment in the next few days.
Lohan is also apparently interested in hosting a Twitter chat to answer questions about The Canyons prior to the festival.
The Canyons stars James Deen as a manipulative movie producer and Lohan as his girlfriend, who is harbouring a dark secret.

The very early word on "The Canyons" has arrived, and save for a positive review from Variety film critic Scott Foundas, Lindsay Lohan's new film has been raked over the coals. Critical notices from The Hollywood Reporter, Indiewire and Screen Daily range from mixed to outright slam pieces.

Here’s what I have to say about The Canyons: Give it to me. Give me porn legend James Deen‘s grit, Lindsay Lohan‘s Lana Del Rey-style languor, and the delicate touch of Bret Easton Ellis to bring it all together. The movie’s theatrical release date is August 9, but it’ll be available on all VOD (video on demand) platforms August 2.
In the meantime, check out these exclusive and official “memes” from the movie. James Deen is delivering moodiness that I find slightly more Monty Clift than James Dean, and Lohan “seems happy” but might be “totally faking it.” What could it all mean?

We all know sex sells, and boy does it pay.
Farrah Abraham reportedly sold her porn video to Vivid Entertainment for $1.5 million, and she's still making money from her X-rated romp with adult-entertainment star James Deen.
TMZ reports that the former "Teen Mom" star has raked in close to $120,000 in royalties in just two months.
Abraham's porn video, "Farrah Superstar: Backdoor Teen Mom," was wildly successful and received more than 2 million visitors in just the first 12 hours after it was released.
With sales numbers like those, Abraham has no doubt already paid off the bills for her most recent boob job, and with the way her career is headed, it seems like they were probably a good investment.

Oprah Winfrey is getting into the Lindsay Lohan business.

We’re finally getting a closer look into Lindsay’s new film ‘The Canyons’ — which looks a lot like a reality show.
In her first dramatic role in what seems like forever, Lindsay Lohan stars in The Canyons, which vaguely resembles the troubled starlet’s actual life — but hey, we’re not complaining! The film stars Ms. Lohan as Tara, an aspiring actress who engages in all the youth, glamour, and sex that modern-day Los Angeles has to offer.
The film also stars James Deen, the other half of Teen Mom Farrah Abraham’s sex tape, as Tara’s producer boyfriend Christian along with Awkward‘s Nolan Funk. The film opens with Tara questioning the movie experience but sharply transitions into a thrilling noir with moments of a barely-clothed Lindsay and Nolan that are oh-so sexy.
We think this may be Lindsay’s official comeback into the movie business. The Canyons will be released Aug.

After a series of jokey retro teasers, disgruntled reports about its rejection from Sundance and SXSW, and plenty of gossip questioning its (thus far unseen) artistic merits, Paul Schrader's The Canyons is ready to see the light of day. To celebrate (?!), it has received a serious trailer that looks quite accomplished, hip, cool, modern, kinda jazzy, kinda Valley porn-y, what have you. It also has an official, serious synopsis: Notorious writer Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho) and acclaimed director Paul Schrader (writer of Taxi Driver and director of American Gigolo) join forces for this explicitly erotic thriller about youth, glamour, sex and surveillance. Manipulative and scheming young movie producer Christian (adult film star James Deen) makes films to keep his trust fund intact, while...

A new trailer for The Canyons, the buzzy film that stars troubled actress Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen, has debuted. The trailer opens with Lohan's character discussing the state of the film business. "Ok tell me something: Do you really like movies?" she says. "I don't know -- I guess maybe it's just not my thing anymore." Photos: Lindsay Lohan Through the Years The trailer -- backed by strong, dubstep-like music -- goes on to preview the tormented life of Lohan and Deen's characters, who seem to be dealing with plenty of problems, from secrets to sex tapes.

Paul Schrader's already hotly debated new film "The Canyons" has a trailer, and in anticipation of the film's August release, the UCLA Film & Television Archive kicks off a retrospective of the director's work this weekend. Originally funded via Kickstarter, "The Canyons" -- written by literary provocateur Bret Easton Ellis and starring Lindsay Lohan and porn actor James Deen -- began production in July 2012. The film is a scathing portrait of contemporary youth, glamor and sex. In January, The New York Times published a must-read profile of the production, and the many on-set histrionics of Lohan. "Canyons" was rejected by Sundance and in the months that followed, was suspended in post-production limbo. At one point, Steven Soderbergh offered to cut the film. A controversial director but an indisputably great writer robbed of an Oscar nomination for his "Taxi Driver" screenplay, the obstinate Schrader declined. But right now he is happy with the film.

A new trailer has recently arrived for the micro-budget indie flick The Canyons, which stars child-star-turned-troubled-actress Lindsay Lohan and porn-star/mainstream-actor James Deen. While the actors look great, the performances seem solid, and some of the themes of the movie are discussed, there is still no indication as to what the actual plot revolves around. Apparently we'll all find out when the movie is released on August 2nd, both in theaters and on VOD.

This trailer is so dishy, sexy and on-the-nose about movies, Hollywood and the soul-hardening star culture that it's almost too sweet for the morning.
And yet it's also too good to pass up with Lindsay Lohan is full louche sexpot mode, talking to an off-camera character about how she thinks maybe movies aren't her thing anymore (Wink Wink) while we see abandoned theatres and empty marquees so you know this isn't going to bother with subtlety.
The movie is directed by Paul Schrader, the guy who wrote Taxi Driver and directed American Gigolo we're told via on-screen titles, was written by Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho) and co-stars porn king James Deen, which means the pot will be stirred in this pulpy drama.

Arriving in cinemas and on VOD in the Us early next month, Paul Shrader’s The Canyons is sure to be somewhat divisive when it lands.
Lindsay Lohan and (porn star) James Deen lead the film, and IFC have released the first ‘proper’ trailer ahead of its release next month, via Apple, along with a handful of Nsfw images in the new issue of FilmComment, via Collider.
It gives us a much better look at the film’s feel, over the previous parody trailers. And you can’t help but feel that the film will, at the very least, gain some form of cult status, regardless of its reception amongst critics.
The Canyons is a contemporary L.A. noir from director Paul Schrader, writer Bret Easton Ellis, and producer Braxton Pope about the dangers of sexual obsession and ambition, both personally and professionally, among a group of young people in...

If you haven't read The New York Times' astonishing fly-on-the-wall piece about the making of crowd-funded Hollywood flick The Canyons, you should rectify that immediately. It's a micro-budget Hearts Of Darkness and Burden Of Dreams rolled into one sun-drenched La nightmare. There are budget crises, location crises, and Lindsay Lohan crises, all of which left director Paul Schrader clinging to his sanity like a mountain goat with particularly greasy hooves.Read it? Excellent. Now watch The Canyons' new trailer and marvel that an actual movie has emerged from the jaws of possible disaster. It's got plenty of Lohan philosophising and a Gus Van Sant cameo, although what exactly it's about remains cloudy. What we do know is that screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis has crafted a Less Than Zero-y piece which follows a group of twentysomethings who get into sex and crime in Los Angeles. Lohan stars alongside adult movie actor James Deen.

The trailer for The Canyons looks like it will give you a neon-colored Std. There’s no escaping that brash aesthetic element, but the far more common commentary that seems to be happening is the funeral dirge being sung for movies. Some of the first promo imagery for the Paul Schrader-directed sexual thriller featured the crumbling insides of a theater; he recently spoke at length about the “systemic change” facing the filmmaking industry; and the meta nature of a producer (James Deen) and his actress girlfriend (Lindsay Lohan) anchoring the story brings it all home. So it’s not surprising that the latest trailer for the film opens with Lohan’s character rhetorically asking if we still like movies before admitting that she’s just not that into them anymore. Beyond the darkness and forced shock to be expected from anything Bret Easton Ellis is involved in, the quiet death of movies might be something we...

After several teaser videos, IFC Films has finally released the first official version for director Paul Schrader’s new film The Canyons starring Lindsay Lohan and pornstar James Deen. The new trailer for contemporary L.A. noir about the dangers of sexual obsession and ambition starts off with Lohan’s monologue about movies, which obviously are not her thing anymore. We see later glimpses of sex, provocative images of barely-clothed men, and, of course, a cameo by Gus Van Sant who also stars in the film. The film also stars Nolan Gerard Funk and Amanda Brooks. The background music sounds like tracks used for the spots for Spring...

The Canyons has debuted a new trailer.
Lindsay Lohan and porn actor James Deen star in Paul Schrader's erotic thriller.
The trailer offers a brief glimpse into the world of affairs and revenge around which the movie circles.
Nolan Gerard Funk and Amanda Brooks will also star in the Bret Easton Ellis-written film, with Gus Van Sant making a cameo as a psychotherapist.
Schrader recently compared Lohan to Marilyn Monroe, saying that despite her "tardiness, unpredictability, tantrums, absences, neediness [and] psychodrama", she was a "treat to work with".
The Canyons will debut at the Venice Film Festival later in the summer.
It was rejected by South By Southwest earlier in the year due to "quality issues".

If Paul Schrader's The Canyons fails to find an audience, it won't be due to lack of buzz. The film, which stars Lindsay Lohan and adult film star James Deen, made headlines due to reports and leaked audio revealing some serious drama on set during production. The film failed to find a spot at SXSW and Sundance, but it did manage to secure a distributer in IFC, and less than a month from its planned release into theaters and Video on Demand, The Canyons now has a new trailer. So you've watched The Canyons trailer, now what? Wondering what the film is actually about? The trailer does seem to dance around that, going the teaser route with its focus on rundown movie theaters, sex, violence and Hollywood glamour. Written by Brett Easton Ellis and directed by Paul Schrader, The Canyons is about an actress named Tara (Lohan) and Christian...

With only weeks to go before its big debut in theaters, a new trailer for the film "The Canyons" was released on Wednesday.
The much hyped thriller stars Lindsay Lohan and James Deen is described as youth, glamor, sex and Los Angeles, circa 2012.
On Tuesday, the film's director Paul Schrader told the press he saw something special about the often troubled actress, who is currently in court ordered rehab.
"Tardiness, unpredictability, tantrums, absences, neediness, psychodrama—yes, all that, but something more, that thing that keeps you watching someone on screen, that thing you can't take your eyes off of, that magic, that mystery,” he said.
"The Canyons" hits theaters on August 2. In the meantime, check out the trailer in the player below!

It’s the moment we’ve all been either waiting for … or dreading. After months of hype, fascinating profiles, delays, and finger-twirling, The Canyons is finally upon us.
From the minds of writer Bret Easton Ellis and director Paul Schrader, The Canyons is a Los Angeles-set neo-noir about Tara (Lindsay Lohan), an aspiring actress, and her producer boyfriend Christian (James Deen), and all the gritty eroticism that their modern-day, exaggerated L.A. has to offer.
For those of you who were somewhat won over by the manipulative pastiche of the teaser, the first official trailer goes in a slightly different direction.

Back before she was ordered to rehab, Lindsay Lohan was making headlines for her role in "The Canyons." Not because it was a wonderful movie or anything, but more because Lindsay was notoriously difficult to work with on the set, with even her co-star, porn actor James Deen, saying she was a child who would yell and cry.
Now that he's working with Farrah Abraham on "Back Door Teen Mom" though, maybe he's missed working with the likes of Lindsay.
Well, "The Canyons is finally getting a release, hitting video on demand, along with a handful of theaters, in August. To make sure the world is adequately prepared, an official trailer has been released. It starts with Lohan's character, Tara, discussing the demise of movie theaters, before the sex and dubstep soundtrack get turned way up.

Womp-womp! Can't imagine Skrillex will be showing up in this movie the way he cameo'd in "Wreck-it-Ralph," but the new trailer for "The Canyons" gets its dubstep on nevertheless.
Oh yeah. It also features Lindsay Lohan, porn star James Deen (clever!), plus some script assistance from world's wackiest Tweeter Bret Easton Ellis, no stranger to controversy thanks to "American Psycho" and "Less Than Zero" (which featured one of the best movie soundtracks ever - Slayer, LL Cool J, The Bangles, etc. - with absolutely zero womp-womp dubstep). "Less Than Zero" saw Robert Downey Jr. on his knees in front of another dude at the behest of coke dealer turned pimp James Spader.
"The Rules of Attraction," another Easton Ellis stamped flick, had onetime WB goodie-goodie Jessica Biel in lingerie, future "The Vampire Diaries" star Ian Somerhalder as bisexual lothario Paul Denton and even Dawson himself, James Van Der Beek.

In a provocative collaboration, writer Bret Easton Ellis and Taxi Driver director Paul Schrader pulled in controversial actress Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen for a sultry, sexy film called The Canyons. Early hype for the film included stranger teaser trailers themed around Los Angeles, infused with grindhouse traits, thrown back to the 1950s and another one that went even more retro with a 1930s vibe. Now an official trailer has arrived to give us a better idea of this film's style and story which follows the haphazard youth, glamor and sex of their lives and how it will eventually unravel the sanity.
