It’s been less than 12 years since Dan Stevens raised a middle finger to the British aristocracy, quitting “Downton Abbey” as the show neared its Emmy-amassing zenith and setting sail for America with his family. As he admits, he had “absolutely no idea” what was going to happen to him.
“There was no roadmap,” the 41-year-old actor explains with frank honestly about a decision that, at the time, was considered by many to be sheer lunacy. “I left ‘Downton’ with a blank slate. It was just, ‘I think I want to do other things.’ But I didn’t know what that looked like.”
To have an idea of what that currently looks like, anyone need just head to their nearest cinema, where Stevens is going head-to-head against himself in two of the biggest studio releases of the season. In what has become something of a calling card for the Brit...

‘The Office’: Domhnall Gleeson & ‘White Lotus’s Sabrina Impacciatore Cast In New Greg Daniels Comedy
The potential new Greg Daniels and Michael Koman comedy series in The Office universe has locked in its first two stars: Domhnall Gleeson (The Patient) and Sabrina Impacciatore (White Lotus), who will be part of an ensemble, sources close to production tell Deadline. Details regarding their roles are under wraps. The Office studio Universal Television declined to comment, other than to confirm that the project remains in development.
As Deadline revealed exclusively in January, Daniels opened up a development room to explore ideas for a follow-up series to the Emmy-winning The Office. The prospective new series, which is not a reboot, is said to be set in a new office with new characters but live within the same world as the Steve Carell-led mockumentary series which follows employees at the Scranton, Pennsylvania, branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. Daniels has indicated that a new Office iteration could...

Fictional characters can be created with any amount of exaggeration as needed because there’s no benchmark to compare them with. Sure, the characters can be inspired by real people, but the makers are free to present the fictional characters with as much exaggeration as they want, without any obstruction. However, what do you do when the inspiration for your character is erratic and unhinged in real life, and the TV series you’re making is the dramatization of the actual person? This was the situation White House Plumbers showrunners Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck were faced with when coming up with a character who could capture the eccentric nature of former FBI agent, G. Gordon Liddy.
If you’ve watched any of the interviews by the man himself, you’ll note that Gordon Liddy was a charismatic man like no other, and he exuded charm. However, there is a...

Loyalty is a two-way street, but unfortunately, it’s often the higher-ups who seem to forget that they need to repay the loyalty that once saved their skin. The same thing quickly transpired in the final episode of the HBO miniseries White House Plumbers, as events picked up right after Dorothy’s death in the plane crash. As the trial for bugging the DNC reaches a tipping point, Howard Hunt and Gordon Liddy start thinking of ways to approach the matter individually, though vastly different in their manner of approach. Let’s find out what all happened in the White House Plumbers finale.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happens During The Trial Phase?
During Dorothy’s funeral, All that Gordon can do is ask the grieving Howard if he’s still writing the tell-all book exposing the involvement of the higher-ups. Apparently, right before Dorothy got on the plane, she’d gotten $200k in insurance,...

HBO’s dramatization of the 1972 Watergate scandal, White House Plumbers, is a blueprint of what Not to do when you’re infiltrating a highly secretive government building. Based on the arrests made during a break-in attempt to gather information on President Nixon’s opponent, the show represents how former CIA and FBI operatives Howard Hunt and Gordon Liddy fumbled the plan, which led to their subsequent arrests. Starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux in the lead roles, here’s what happens in the third episode and what became of the crew during the fourth break-in attempt.
Spoilers Ahead
The Second Attempt
If obstinacy and hard-headedness were an Olympic sport, Gordon Liddy would be winning prizes left and right, right beside Howard Hunt, competing for the sport to prove your doubters wrong. The third episode of “White House Plumbers,” based on the 1972 Watergate scandal, demonstrates how the Plumbers’ crew found themselves...

Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux).
In the full trailer, Howard’s wife Dorothy, played by Lena Headey, declares the scheme to re-elect President Richard Nixon by bugging their opponents at the Democratic National Committee, “The stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.” The series begins with the White House employing Hunt and Liddy to investigate the leak of the Pentagon Papers and zeroes in on their subsequent, haphazard schemes to break into the DNC offices; the...

John Dean doesn’t recall the exact date more than 50 years ago when he first met Martha Mitchell, but he remembers his impressions.
“The Attorney General [John Mitchell] used to have lunches every Wednesday for the senior staff, which I was a part of. He’d have them in his large conference room at the Department of Justice. And often Martha would attend those,” recalls Dean, the former White House Counsel under President Nixon, and a key figure in the Watergate coverup. “She was always a bright light in any room she walked into. She was vivacious, she was smart.”
There was a time, even before she became a kind of Watergate whistleblower, when seemingly all of America knew Martha Mitchell. The first teaser for “White House Plumbers,” a new HBO limited series about the Watergate Scandal, was released this Friday. In addition, HBO announced that the series will premiere March 2023.
Taking inspiration from the 2007 book “Integrity” by Richard Nixon administration lawyer Egil Krogh — who is played in the series by “Mad Men” actor Rich Sommer — and Matthew Krogh, “The White House Plumbers” recounts the Watergate break-in of the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters in 1972, from the perspective of E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), members of the “White House Plumbers” group tasked with stopping leaks of classified information who plotted the break-in that failed and eventually led to the collapse of Nixon’s administration. The series follows Hunt and Liddy as they desperately try to minimize the fallout of the breakout, and examines how the events impacted their personal lives.

The sound department for the Starz limited series “Gaslit” earned a pair of Emmy nominations for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. It was the 24th nomination for re-recording mixer John W. Cook II and the second for co-supervising sound editor Kevin Buchholz. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Cook, who won an Emmy in 2007 for “Scrubs,” is thrilled to be a double nominee this year for “Gaslit” and the HBO Max comedy “Hacks.” He says, “We get so focused on the project that we’re currently working on. Consequently, the stuff that we did six months ago or a year ago tends to fall away in our memories. Emmy-nominated re-recording mixers John W. Cook II and Ben Wilkins layered in 16 different tracks of recording for a key courtroom moment in Starz’s “Gaslit.”
The political thriller takes a different look at the Watergate scandal. Rather than look at the infamous hotel break-in, the show examines the political relationships and the women — particularly Martha Mitchell, played by Julia Roberts.
It also looks at John Dean, President Nixon’s White House counsel (played by Dan Stevens), and his wife Maureen “Mo” Dean (Betty Gilpin).
In a key moment, John Dean is set to testify before the Senate committee.
The scene before shows John almost chickening out of his testimony. It’s a moment with Mo and the two are sitting outside an office. “He wants to give up and Mo says, ‘You are absolutely not going to give up. You think this is hard? This is not hard.’ Cook explains...

Domhnall Gleeson channels Hannibal Lecter in the first trailer for “The Patient,” the upcoming FX limited series co-starring Steve Carell.
Created by Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, who previously worked together on the acclaimed FX drama “The Americans,” “The Patient” focuses on the relationship between Alexander Strauss (Carell), a well-regarded psychotherapist, and his new patient Sam Fortner (Gleeson). When Sam takes Strauss hostage, he reveals himself to be a serial killer, and asks the doctor to cure him of his murderous tendencies. As Strauss reluctantly begins treatment, the experience unearths demons and traumas of his own, blurring the line between the patient and therapist. The trailer begins with a normal therapy session between the two before fast-forwarding to the hostage situation, with Strauss trapped via chain in Sam’s house.
“Successful therapy requires a safe environment, without anything like fear hanging over every session,” Carell says in the trailer.

The buzz for the Starz limited series “Gaslit” began in early 2020, when it was announced that the first season of Slate’s “Slow Burn” podcast was being adapted into a limited series. Since its final episode, which aired on June 12, many of Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts are speculating that the thrilling historical drama has the potential to earn multiple nominations in several above and below the line categories.
One of the most compelling narratives on the path to Emmy success is that the “Gaslit” cast is composed of A-list, award winning actors, as well as television and film standouts. The casting is so incredible that Robert Lloyd, Los Angeles Times television critic, markedly stated, ”Indeed, the series can be watched as dance, a pair of alternating actorly pas de deux, set off by ensemble pieces, and is completely enjoyable as such.”

There’s something comfortably distancing about history. Grainy black and white footage can look impossibly foreign, and even once something’s in color, the more limited options older film stocks worked with to recreate real life have this kind of patina to them in comparison to digital color. It is easy for a modern audience to use the look of something as an emotional off-ramp — this thing looks different from how the world is now, so it doesn’t apply to us. But “Gaslit,” Starz’s look into the Watergate scandal (adapted from the first season of the “Slow Burn” podcast), doesn’t want to provide viewers with any escape from how the hubris, incompetence, and immorality of men in power ripple outwards. This extends to the show’s visuals, which restore immediacy to an event that’s now considered settled history.

As Emmy nominations voting comes to a close this Monday, UCP and Starz have found one more way to expose their limited series “Gaslit” to potential voters: Free, over-the-air broadcast TV.
The first episode of “Gaslit,” starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn, will air on NBC-owned TV stations in key markets including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, this weekend in a final push to expose the series to as many people as possible.
Universal Studio Group’s UCP produces “Gaslit” for Starz. And in a case of Comcast/NBCUniversal synergy, Usg and UCP have turned to their sister NBC broadcast station unit for help. As a result, the first episode of “Gaslit” will air on Knbc/Channel 4 in Los Angeles on Saturday, June 25, at 8 p.m. — in primetime.
In New York (Wnbc), Philadelphia (Wcau), Washington D.C. (Wrc), Boston (Wbts) and Philadelphia (Wcau), the NBC stations will air “Gaslit” at 7 p.

Editor’s Note: This post on the Jan 6 committee hearings by our TV critic Dominic Patten has been reclassified from a review to a commentary, and has been edited to better reflect the author’s point of view. In trying to opine that the presentation of evidence about a horrific day in American history did not rise to the occasion, the author did not mean to denigrate or belittle the loss of life and shocking violence that happened that day.
If tonight’s primetime debut of the House January 6 committee investigating the Maga-fueled murderous attack on the U.S. Capitol last year was any indication of how the democracy-protecting politicians plan on making their pitch to the American public, they fell short.
The fact is Thursday’s hearings led by chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss) and vice chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-wy) was not effective.

“It’s been the great mystery in political history of the past 50 years,” said Slamdance Film Festival founder, writer and director Dan Mirvish of the eighteen-and-a-half minutes famously missing from the Nixon Tapes. His campy political thriller out this weekend takes a stab at what might have happened.
Adventure Entertainment opens 18 1/2 today on four screens in NY, LA, and Fort Lauderdale, expanding next week to about 60 including a special screening Wednesday at the Landmark Theatres E Street Cinema in Washington, D.C. to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Watergate. The National Archives is screening CNN documentary series Watergate: Blueprint for a Scandal the same night at a dueling event with John Dean, who was President Richard Nixon’s counsel from July, 1970 to April, 1973. The mother of U.S. political scandals exploded in June of 1972 when five men broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate hotel and office complex.

Exclusive: Marking the first major role to be cast in the upcoming sequel, Dan Stevens is set to lead the next installment of Legendary’s Monsterverse film franchise, a follow-up to last year’s Godzilla vs. Kong. Adam Wingard, who helmed the first film, is returning to direct, with production is slated to begin this summer in Australia.
Per usual, plot details are being kept under wraps, other than following the film’s larger-than-life monsters and then preparing for their next battle against each other. Godzilla vs. Kong helped get audiences back in theaters as it became the second film of the Covid era to cross the 100 million mark at the domestic box office en route to 468 million globally. The number is impressive as it also bowed day-and-date on HBO Max.

CNN will debut Watergate: Blueprint for a Scandal, with John Dean offering his first-hand account of the break in that brought down Richard Nixon’s presidency, on June 5.
Dean, former White House counsel for Nixon, serves as an executive producer on the project, with the debut tied to the 50th anniversary of the break in.
In a statement, Dean said, “After passage of a half century, we have the complete record of what happened during Watergate and this series is more than a cautionary tale about these events. The criminal conduct of Richard Nixon and his top aides was found to be totally unacceptable to the American people and became the blueprint for what no President of the United States should do.”

In Gaslit, Starz’s new retelling of the Watergate conspiracy, it’s no surprise that G. Gordon Liddy is the first to grab the mic. “History isn’t written by the feeble masses — the pissants, the commies, the queers and the women,” the political zealot tells us. “It is written and rewritten by soldiers carrying the banner of kings.” As he lectures, he’s scorching his hand over an open flame and embracing the pain.

Sometimes, history is so mind-boggling that you don't even need to change it up much for entertainment value.
Such is the case of Watergate, the historical background of Starz's new series, Gaslit.
With an award-winning cast scraping the barrel of some of political history's most outrageous characters, Gaslit Season 1 Episode 1 proves that we won't be able to take our eyes off of this one.
Gaslit is telling Martha Mitchell's (Julia Roberts) story. However, the premiere suggests a more rounded approach to Martha's herstory with the Watergate men getting lots of attention.
From the opening scene, featuring Shea Whigham as crazy man G. Gordon Liddy, the mastermind behind the Watergate schemes, you can smell the stink of desperation to secure an election that seemingly would be a landslide victory for President Richard Nixon anyway.
With some of the most notable government officials today skirting 100, refusing to clear a path for new ideas,...

“Gaslit” kicks off Sunday night on Starz, showcasing lesser known stories from those around the Watergate scandal, including outspoken whistleblower Martha Mitchell, the wife of Richard Nixon’s attorney general-turned-campaign manager John Mitchell.
The drama, starring Julia Roberts as Martha and Sean Penn as John, comes from executive producer Robbie Pickering (“Mr. Robot”), who told TheWrap he had been wanting to do a story set in the Nixon era for quite some time.
“I always wanted to do a show about the culture around Nixon, and nobody was really interested for many, many years,” Pickering said. “[For] about 10 or 12 years, I tried to pitch a show like that. In Starz’s new Gaslit, premiering Sunday, central Watergate figure John Dean is played by Dan Stevens. In White House Plumbers, an upcoming HBO limited series, Dean is portrayed by Domhnall Gleeson. And in The Last Witness: Watergate, an upcoming four-part CNN original series, Dean himself will “confront his own involvement in the biggest presidential scandal of the 20th century,” in the words of the network.
As we approach the 50th anniversary of the June 17, 1972, break-in at the Watergate complex, the “third-rate burglary” that brought down a presidency, Hollywood is still mining the scandal for storylines, drawing on new perspectives and points of view even as many of the central figures have long passed, the notorious aspects of Watergate have faded in memory, and D.C. has been gripped by so many other moments of abuse of power that are arguably of far more consequence. Dan Stevens decided not to sit down with John Dean, Republican lawyer in the Watergate era turned news pundit and circuit speaker, ahead of playing him in the Starz drama Gaslit.
Stevens has told the British press that he was initially keen to sit down with Dean, who still polarises opinion for his role in the Nixon-period scandal, but the actor changed his mind once word got out of the planned meeting.

Many of us know parts of the story of President Richard Nixon’s fall from grace, leading to his 1974 resignation. Two years before, Nixon’s paranoid streak had led to greenlighting the 1972 so-called White House Plumbers break-in at Democratic Party offices in DC’s posh Watergate Hotel, orchestrated by Attorney General John Mitchell. As a tween, I watched the political scandal unfurl on the nightly news over family dinners, with my outraged lefty father screaming at the TV and broadcaster “Uncle” Walter Cronkite while we booed Nixon alongside him. But, as I picked my way through adolescence, I didn’t know the epic details of the story “Gaslit” reveals.

Few television shows cycle through actors faster than the “Law and Order” franchise, and many a great thespian has launched their career by appearing as a criminal-of-the-week on the NBC series.
Betty Gilpin was no stranger to the show in her early years, appearing on both the flagship “Law and Order” show and many of its spinoffs. Appearing on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” this week, the “Glow” star opened up about the multitude of roles she played on “Law and Order,” including “a pedophile with vocal fry” and “a lesbian with acne.” But her most memorable experience on the show happened during what should have been her easiest role: playing a corpse.
“I was found naked in an oil drum — Vincent D’Onofrio found my naked, dead body,” Gilpin said, before adding that she was almost abandoned in a body bag. “I just had to sort of be in there.

“Shining Girls,” based on the novel by South African author Lauren Beukes, has an ingenious premise. Jamie Bell plays a time-traveling serial killer who targets special young women (the “shining girls” of the title). In the 1980s, he leaves one girl standing, who then decides to hunt him down. Of course, that girl is Elisabeth Moss, who through roles on “Mad Men,” “Top of the Lake” and “Handmaid’s Tale”, has become one of the most exciting and emotionally acute performers working today.

To celebrate the release of political thriller Gaslit, we spoke to some of the stars of the show.
Created by Matt Ross, Gaslit revolves around the players who were behind the infamous Watergate scandal. Following government officials such as John Dean and G. Gordon Liddy, the show the events leading up to and after the event. It also looks at Martha Mitchell, and her anti-war stance which went against Nixon and her husband John Mitchell.
We were delighted to speak with Dan Stevens about tackling the ambitions of his character and blasting Boris Johnson on The One Show, as well as working with Betty Gilpin who plays his wife Mo Dean.
We also spoke to the brilliant Shea Wigman about taking on the role of G. Gordon Liddy and how he layered this engrossing yet temperamental, stoic character.
Gaslit premieres on Starzplay on the 24th April.

The first problem for Starz’s new series “Gaslit” may be in its title.
Sure, to “gaslight,” as a verb, has its origins in the 1944 film (and its earlier stage source material), all about a woman whose husband, insistent on his falsehoods, leads her to question her sanity. But its contemporary usage, as a slang term with a meaning that has drifted closer to simply “lying,” might not be how a woman in the 1970s would understand a case of marital dishonesty.
Which is not to say that Martha Mitchell, the character Julia Roberts plays here, doesn’t have a keen understanding of just what she’s up against. Martha, the real-life wife of Richard Nixon’s attorney general John Mitchell, is depicted by Roberts as at once puckishly witty and as not immune to dramatizing her already dramatic circumstances. “Gaslit,” which takes a broad view of the political players...

You’re not imagining things: We are positively drowning in TV docudramas these days. The Girl From Plainville, Inventing Anna, The Dropout, The First Lady… if it made headlines or inspired a podcast, it’s probably on TV right now, with big stars lining up to play famous real-life figures (and earn an easy Emmy nomination). So I couldn’t blame you if you cast a weary eye in the direction of Starz’s Gaslit — premiering this Sunday at 8/7c; I’ve seen the first four episodes — especially since the story of the Watergate scandal has been told and retold...

“Malum in se.”
In “Gaslit,” as explained by G. Gordon Liddy, Malum in se is a Latin phrase that means “an act of evil in and of itself” — something easily recognized as wrong, no matter the framework. It works in opposition to “Malum prohibitum,” which speaks to an act that violates the laws of man. Maybe it’s not obviously illegal, but society still deems it as such. Liddy, a loyal soldier of President Richard M. Nixon, believes that the leaders who wrote these laws were thus right and good; that, as the strongest men, they had the right to shape history as they see fit; that everyone else should follow their will, for they were the purest and most righteous among us.
Sound familiar? Even before accusations of fascism were being hurled across Twitter, they were being shouted at bars, during protests, and anywhere else Americans felt it was...

Starz has unveiled the trailer and key art for “Gaslit,” its limited series that tackles the Watergate scandal. The show focuses on the perspective of Martha Mitchell (Julia Roberts), the wife of Richard Nixon’s attorney general, John Mitchell (Sean Penn). “Gaslit” will debut on Starz’s digital platform at midnight on April 24, with a linear debut the same day at 8 p.m. Et.
Roberts is on fire in the trailer, Arkansas accent and all, as a political storm swirls around her, and Penn is nearly unrecognizable in his prosthetics and hair pieces. At one point, John slaps Martha across the face, to which she responds by slapping him back, adding, “My momma slapped me harder than that.”
Martha was the first person to publicly blow the whistle on Nixon’s involvement in the infamous scandal, which kicked off an avalanche of political and personal consequences. John was Nixon’s close advisor and friend,...

And the award goes to...
Let's prep for a very exciting awards season with Starz's Gaslit looking to be quite the thrill ride with a cast that makes your hair stand on end.
Sean Penn may be in Ukraine filming the atrocities occurring there, but you'll soon see him supporting leading lady Julia Roberts as the two play married couple, John and Martha Mitchell, and it looks like they'll knock it out of the park!
The series is a modern take on Watergate, focusing on the scandal's untold stories and forgotten characters -- from Nixon's bumbling and opportunistic subordinates to the deranged zealots aiding and abetting their crimes to the tragic whistleblowers.
They would eventually bring the whole rotten enterprise crashing down.
The story will center on Martha Mitchell, played by Roberts, a big personality with an even bigger mouth. Martha is a celebrity Arkansan socialite and wife to Nixon's loyal Attorney General,...
