Season 17 of “American Idol” ended on May 19. Will the new winner enjoy more success than the 2018 champion, Maddie Poppe? After all, she didn’t even get a chance to perform on this year’s finale despite releasing her first album, “Whirlwind,” just two days prior. What a contrast to the early days of the show, when the previous season’s winner was always showcased on the episode that unveiled the new winner of the franchise.
This Emmy-winning reality competition series began in 2002, For more than a decade, it was a ratings powerhouse with many of those winners enjoying some success. The first-ever champ, Kelly Clarkson, has won three Grammys and turned her fame into a string of hit records and an ongoing gig as a judge on the competition, NBC’s’ “The Voice.” And season 4 winner Carrie Underwood has done even better, having sold upwards of records and won a shelf load of music awards.

With Season 17 of “American Idol” coming to a close on May 19 with Alejandro Aranda, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg as the final three, it has a good chance of being considered to be among one of the best seasons ever. But is it The best? That is yet to be determined. Certainly all three contestants have grown as vocalists and entertainers each and every week, especially on Sunday’s second-to-last show. But it is a little too early to see how No. 17 stacks ups with these four stellar seasons from the past.
America per saymay not have voted in our “best-ever” poll, but Gold Derby readers did — and 39% chose Season 8 when Kris Allen with his folky renditions of pop tunes somehow beat the versatile showman Adam Lambert. Of course, being the current front man for Queen is a different kind of win. I also don’t recall Allen being invited back on the show,...

After a so-so revival last year when ABC took over “American Idol,” most fans are in agreement that the talent on display on Season 17 is a giant leap for singing kind. The show overall seems to be more entertaining. Yes, judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan are never going to be as scathingly funny as Simon Cowell in his snide heyday. But their personalities and musical knowledge complement each other and all three seem quite genuine in their quest to help the contestants to up their games.
Very early in this current edition of the show, the words “best season ever” were uttered. It is all subjective, of course, but with just one more episode and the three-hour finale left, No. 17 could go down in “Idol’ ‘history talent-wise once a winner is crowned. Of course, factoring into that assessment will be the winner’s post-show success as well.

On Monday’s Hollywood Week episode on “American Idol,” Las Vegas native Johanna Jones, 23, was preparing to sing her sultry note-perfect rendition of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.” In an interview, she said she was bummed that her boyfriend couldn’t be in L.A. to witness her solo because of his college finals.
Jones said, “He’s the most supportive, loving, awesome guy I ever met. I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but I think he’s the one. We don’t need to tell him that quite yet – I mean, I don’t know if he knows, but I know”

Some folks don’t like to come in second but will gladly accept it as a challenge to do better the next time. Diana DeGarmo is one such individual who’s been in some aspect of show business since she was very young and has grown up trying to be the best she can possibly be. The musical by Christine Rea and Rick Briskin, directed by Michael Schiralli, had a sold-out run at the Rahway, New Jersey theater last season, getting a boost of attention from critics and ticket sales.

Everyone’s family is crazy. Some may seem crazier than others, but that’s generally a byproduct of them being less self-conscious. The question we don’t ask ourselves — whether a part of the insanity or watching as an outsider — is why. Why does one member prove so gratingly obnoxious when you know he/she knows what others think? Why does another member retreat into his/her insular existence away from the sprawling chaos so that any opportunity to join the others feels like a chore? What has happened to drive this wedge that grows larger with each passing year of silence? The answer usually concerns blame. To be so close to someone when something bad happens to you both requires empathy and understanding. Guilt, however, often forces us to find fault instead.

Season 10 of American Idol. Top 4 results night. May 12, 2011.
I remember it vividly, joyfully — but not just because the exceptional Haley Reinhart (who’d been enduring egregious sabotage from judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson) improbably survived over rocker dude James Durbin. Mostly, the date is blazed into my memory because of a surprise delivery I’d received a few hours earlier from the New Jersey State Division of Youth and Family Services: Three-month-old foster twins, ridiculously cute boys whom my husband and I had only learned about earlier that morning.

We have two clips to share with you from Alto, which describes itself as "a NYC mafia flavored lesbian rom com." That really says it all, doesn't it? If not, the official synopsis should do the trick: "Frankie (Diana DeGarmo, American Idol) is as headstrong about her rock band, The Altos, as she is about her Italian-American heritage. Engaged to a good Italian man, everything in her life is in order until she discovers a corpse in the trunk of her rental car, possibly due to a mob hit. Heather, her sister, convinces Frankie to attend the funeral where they meet Nicolette (Natalie Knepp), the daughter of the new Brooklyn mafia don. When Nicolette shows up at her band's gig, it triggers a cascade of events that...

Given all the musicals we've seen on TV recently -- NBC's live-performance versions of "Peter Pan" and "The Sound of Music," not to mention ABC's "Galavant" and all six seasons of Fox's "Glee" -- it's a wonder that the pipeline hasn't flowed in the opposite direction, from the small screen to Broadway.
That may change with the announcements that a couple of TV-based musicals are in the works. One is "Bombshell," the Marilyn Monroe biographical musical that was created and staged over the course of two seasons on NBC's "Smash." Bringing it to Broadway would seem easy enough -- the songs and choreography already exist; all that's needed is a book.
The other is a stage version of "Downton Abbey," which may launch after the British drama's sixth and final season wraps this winter. John Lunn, who composes the music for the series, says he envisions an international tour, starring...

But they were surprised to be confronted by a larger group of Native American activists. “This goes way beyond mocking. Poking fun is one thing, but that’s not what happened,” said one of the fans who agreed to “The Daily Show” appearance. “The Daily Show” has yet to air the segment. NBC is no longer the only player when it comes to live network TV productions of classic musicals. Fox announced on Monday (April 28) morning that the network is moving forward with "Grease Live," an entirely self-explanatory live production of "Grease," which will premiere in 2015. After "The Sound of Music Live!" premiered to a whopping 5.6 rating among adults 18-49 and 22 million viewers (in Live+7 figures) for NBC last December, "Grease" was considered a possible contender to be the network's second live musical. Instead, NBC went with "Peter Pan," which will air live on December 4, 2014 with a yet-to-be-announced cast. That left "Grease" for Fox and the network is mighty excited. “From Broadway to film, and across generations, ‘Grease’ is one of the most beloved musical stories ever told -- and we can't wait to bring it to our air in a spectacular live event," blurbs Shana C. Waterman, Senior Vice President of Event Series for Fox.

Though he certainly didn't mean to, John Travolta started a meme during his very short appearance at the 86th Academy Awards. Even reading off a teleprompter, he just couldn't figure out how to say Idina Menzel ... while introducing Idina Menzel. That was pretty awkward.
