Pablo Hasél’s Arrest Ignited Free Speech Protests in Spain. Years Later, the Rapper Is Still in Jail

Pablo Hasél didn’t want to go to prison. But by 2018, the Catalan rapper had ruffled the coiffed feathers of the Spanish monarchy with unapologetic, rebellious music denouncing perceived injustice — so much so that he’d been handed a two-year prison sentence by Spain’s National Court. Although an appeals judge reduced the term to nine months, Hasél still didn’t think it was right. Neither did a lot of people in Spain.
The sentence — for a song, music video, and 64 tweets — was partially for “injurias a la Corona,” or insulting and slandering the monarchy.

In the early stages of Spain’s democracy, a risky bank robbery would become a turning point to test the country’s new political order. “Bank Under Siege” brings back to life the amazing events of May 23, 1981, when eleven men in masks broke into Barcelona’s Central Bank and turned what seemed like a heist into a powerful political statement.
Three months after a failed military coup to remove Spain’s new democratic government, these thieves took more than 200 hostages. They demanded that Colonel Antonio Tejero and the other people who were involved in the coup be freed. What at first looked like a simple criminal operation turned out to be a complicated political move meant to throw off the country’s delicate shift to democracy.

So, the truth is, no one really knows if the secret document featured in Bank Under Siege is real or not. The entire narrative is based on the accounts of the real-life Jose Juan Martinez Gomez, the mastermind of the 1981 Central Bank robbery, who claimed that the former director of Cesid, Emilio Alonso Manglano, had hired him to steal a briefcase from bank safe deposit box number 156. But hold on, what was really inside these documents, and why was it so important for the director of the secret service that he funded a heist just to retrieve the documents?
According to Martinez, these documents had some confidential details about the infamous Operation Armada. Now what was that? Without going much deeper into the political history of Spain, you might just want to know that the country was going through a transition phase during the early 1980s. And even though former...

Played by the charismatic Miguel Herran, the character of Jose Juan Martinez Gomez, also known as “Number One” and “El Rubio” (the blonde), is based on a real-life person of the same name. According to the reports, he was just 25 years old when he pulled off the Central Bank robbery on May 23, 1981, in Barcelona, Spain. As per the series and real-life accounts, Martinez and his friends had previously been arrested for various armed robberies, though not much is known (or has been reported) about Gomez’s past life. It could be possible that the makers of Netflix’s Bank Under Siege added a few fictional elements to Gomez’s backstory to make his character appear much more realistic.
The fourth episode focused primarily on Martinez’s past, where we found out that he was raised on the streets of Almeria, where he used to rob local jewelry stores and banks from a very young age.

British royal family news reveals that Prince Harry has had his share of sour headlines, both before and after his marriage to Z-lister Meghan Markle.
There was the time he was photographed romping naked in Las Vegas, the time he thought it would be fun to dress as Hitler for Halloween, and more recently, has engaged in atrocious behavior toward the family who cared for him after the death of his mother Diana in 1997.
Harry is not the only UK royal to be dragged through the media—his mother, his father King Charles, his grandfather Prince Philip, and his first wife have all been crucified in the press for one reason or another.
But the UK monarchy is not the only one to be beset by bad PR. Here are some of the other European royals who have been roasted for their bad behavior.

Exclusive: When Emmy-nominated EP Christian Beetz set out to explore the story of disgraced former Spanish King Juan Carlos I, he could never have imagined the “nightmare trip” that followed.
As Sky and NBCUniversal Global Distribution prepare to unveil Juan Carlos: Downfall of the King at Mip TV, Beetz revealed to Deadline that he believed he and his production team were being followed and their conversations listened to during the making of the four-parter last year.
“After doing our first round of interviews with journalists we got an anonymous call saying ‘Be careful what you’re doing here’,” he told us. “This was the start of a nightmare trip.”
Beetz believes his emails were being read and phone was being tapped, and his team started taking precautions, including placing their phones in the fridge – a move made famous by Nsa whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Queen Sofía and her husband, King Juan Carlos I, ruled over Spain for 39 years, which is why it might shock you to find out their marriage didn't actually start in the country. The royal couple married in Athens on May 14, 1962, but there's a good reason for why the nuptials didn't take place at the cathedral in Madrid, like the wedding of the current king, their son, Felipe VI. The now queen consort was then known as Princess Sophia Margarita Victoria Frederica of Greece, the oldest daughter of King Paul and Queen Frederica. She met Prince Juan Carlos on a cruise through the Greek Islands in 1954, and she reconnected with him at a wedding just a year before they married. The third cousins (they are both descendants of Queen Victoria of England) might have wanted their wedding to take place in Spain, but in 1962, Juan Carlos and his family were officially in exile in Rome,...

King Juan Carlos I of Spain announced that he would abdicate, making his son, Prince Felipe, and daughter-in-law, Princess Letizia, the new king and queen of Spain! After King Juan Carlos I made his announcement last month, King Felipe VI was passed the crown in a coronation ceremony on Thursday. The 45-year-old king is already a popular figure in Spain, thanks to his sweet relationship with the gorgeous and accomplished Princess Letizia and their two daughters, Princesses Leonor and Sofía. While they may not get as much international attention as the British royal family, Letizia and Felipe are stars in their own right - Letizia was an award-winning journalist before she took on royal life, while the prince is a former Olympic athlete and philanthropist. To celebrate Felipe's new role, we're looking back at a few of the family's most adorable moments.

With King Juan Carlos I of Spain's abdication, 46-year-old Crown Prince Felipe's coronation will take place on Thursday alongside his soon-to-be queen, Crown Princess Letizia. The 41-year-old princess has been part of the Spanish royal family for just over a decade, and as she prepares to be queen, we're taking a look back at her pre-princess days. Like England's Kate Middleton - who's drawn more than a few comparisons to Princess Letizia - the Spanish princess was born without royal ties. Her father, a journalist, and her mother, a nurse, divorced in 1999. She's the oldest of their three daughters, and her youngest sister sadly passed away in 2007. Before she wore a crown, Princess Letizia built up quite the impressive résumé. After attending a public high school in Madrid, she earned a bachelor's degree and a licentiate's degree in sciences of the information, a form of journalism, at the Complutense University of Madrid.

Spanish actor Paul Naschy was a leading star in horror films for forty years from the late 1960s. He was best known for his role as the tragic werewolf, Waldemar Daninsky, which he originated in the 1968 film La Marca del Hombre Lobo (Mark of the Wolfman) from his own script. Though the film pitted Daninsky against a pair of vampires, the movie was oddly retitled Frankenstein’s Bloody Terror when it was released in the United States. He went on to play the werewolf in nearly a dozen subsequent films, many that he also co-scripted under his real name, Jacinto Molina.
Naschy was born Jacinto Alvarez Molina in Madrid on September 6, 1934. He began working in films as an extra in the 1961 biblical feature King of Kings. He appeared in small roles in a handful of films in the 1960s before creating the role of the werewolf Daninsky.
