Contrary to Frank Costanza’s insistence, “serenity now!” can only do so much when it comes to keeping calm. Just ask Seinfeld stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jason Alexander, who can be seen breaking mid-scene in a newly-resurfaced moment from the iconic ‘90s sitcom.
Earlier this week, Redditor ExtraGlutenPlzz headed to the Seinfeld subreddit with an observation for fellow fans on Season Nine’s “The Merv Griffin Show”: What’s the deal with Michael Richards’ chip-and-burp combo making two of his fellow castmates visibly lose their shit?
“Julia has said that when Michael Richards takes a break to eat a chip on the Merv Griffin show, she couldn’t stop laughing. She can be seen here for a microsecond laughing,” they captioned a screengrab taken about nine minutes into the episode.

Crafting a perfect ending that does justice to all of its characters is often a tough nut to crack in the realm of television, as even iconic shows, including How I Met Your Mother, failed to satisfy its fanbase with its conclusion. Jerry Seinfeld’s Seinfeld is no exception, whose polarizing finale still remains a topic of discourse among fans of the show.

As for the lead’s perspective on the finale, Seinfeld has one major regret, which could’ve facilitated the ending’s reception among fans.

Though Jerry Seinfeld’s eponymous sitcom character may famously detest germs, throwing away a shoelace that touched the men’s room floor, pitching a belt that bumped into a urinal and refusing to kiss his ex-girlfriend, Jenna, after her toothbrush fell into the toilet, he’s far from the clean freak he claims to be, according to actual clean freaks.
Last Tuesday, Redditor TheJewPear headed to the Seinfeld subreddit with a strange observation about the stand-up comic: For someone who claims to hate dirt and grime, Seinfeld sure takes a laissez-faire approach to allowing New York City street shoes on his furniture.
“How come Jerry is supposed to be a neat freak, yet him and his friends regularly put shoes on his couch?” they captioned a snap of the actor enjoying a Diet Coke with his sneaker firmly planted on the cushion of his light teal couch.

"Seinfeld" was famously a grower in terms of popularity. The sitcom struggled in the Nielsen ratings throughout its first three seasons before rising in season 4 and, finally, becoming the juggernaut that it would continue to be until the gang called it quits at the end of season 9.
To get there, Seinfeld and co-creator Larry David had to tweak the formula a little to set the show apart from more amiable hit sitcoms like "Cheers" and "The Cosby Show." For folks familiar with Seinfeld's stand-up through his appearances on HBO comedy specials or "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson," this irascibility was surprising. Sometimes, the show got downright mean — never nastier than the dispatching of George's bride-to-be Susan (Heidi Swedberg) in the classic episode "The Invitations."
Seinfeld himself got more acerbic than he had been in his act, but, because he was not and has yet to be a versatile actor,...

Although I'm on record saying that the "Seinfeld" series finale was good, and Larry David never should've apologized for it, it's undeniable that a lot of people disagree, especially in the episode's immediate aftermath. "Sitcom's finale found guilty of mediocrity" wrote one headline at The Des Moines Register. "It delivered many fewer yucks than yadas," said Howard Rosenberg at the LA Times. "Seinfeld should have quit while it was ahead. Better yet, it should've quit last week," said the Fr. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel.
Although most of the cast and crew stuck up for the ending over the years, Jerry Seinfeld has voiced some regrets. He still mostly stands by it, he just wishes he could've changed one part. "I think the only mistake, if there was one, was leaving them in jail," he said in a May 2024 interview, "We didn't really have to do that."

Calling "Seinfeld" a success story is understating it. But Jason Alexander, who played George Costanza on the show in every episode except one, thinks the series' success might've had bad consequences for the TV industry as a whole. In a Charlie Rose interview from 1998 (the same year "Seinfeld" concluded), Alexander walked through the story of how he, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Elaine), and Michael Richards (Kramer) fought for a raise about halfway through the show's run.
Alexander explained how, around season 5 of "Seinfeld," he, Louis-Dreyfus, and Richards felt "there was no upside" in staying on the show anymore. The success of "Seinfeld" could even be a double-edged sword since they'd be typecast as actors going forward. His fears ended up being founded; of the three, only Louis-Dreyfus has become more than her "Seinfeld" character to the larger public.

Ted Danson apologized on Wednesday to Kelsey Grammer for a 30-year-old rift that occurred when they were both on “Cheers.”
The two discussed their relative falling out on the latest episode of Danson’s SiriusXM’s podcast “Where Everybody Knows Your Name.”
Danson recalled a time when he “got angry” with his costar, who played Dr. Frasier Crane on the NBC sitcom and on the spinoff “Frasier.”
Watch the conversation in the video above.
“This isn’t self-deprecating, but I wish — I feel like I got stuck a little bit with you during the Cheers years. I have a memory of getting angry at you once,” Danson told Grammer.
“Yeah, you came and told me that one day,” Grammer replied, although neither one of them elaborated what the argument was about.
“It’s stuck in both of our memories,” Danson continued. “But I feel like, f–k, I don’t know.

Eva Mendes admitted in an interview with The Sunday Times that she was “never in love with acting,” so there’s no real urgency to ending her 10-years and counting break from it. The actor has not starred in a feature film since a small supporting role in partner Ryan Gosling‘s 2014 directorial effort “Lost River,” although she lent her voice on a 2021 episode of “Bluey” on ABC Kids.
“I was never in love with acting. I don’t mean this in a self-deprecating way, but I wasn’t a great actress,” Mendes said. “I had my moments when I worked with really great people.”
As far as Mendez sees it, her best acting work came when she was starring opposite Gosling in 2012’s crime drama “The Place Beyond on the Pines” or when he was directing her in “Lost River.” She said: “He gets something out of me that’s never been accessible before.

Despite the show’s iconic status and massive success, the financial fallout revealed a complicated landscape of contracts and negotiations. While Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David reaped the rewards of their creative genius, other key players faced financial struggles that highlighted the disparities in Hollywood.

Jerry Seinfeld with his observational comedy has several accolades throughout his life. Not only this, but he’s also the genius behind the NBC hit sitcom Seinfeld and played a fictionalized version of himself. The show ran for a remarkable nine seasons and also brought the comedian a lot of acclaim. But along with this, he’s also not new when it comes to sparking controversies.

For a show with 180 episodes, "Seinfeld" has oddly few stinkers. Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld's magnum opus took the TV landscape by storm throughout the '90s, but the show still remains fresh –- and funnier than almost anything else on television, before or since. Across its nine seasons, "Seinfeld" honed and then perfected its distinctive style of comedy, bringing viewers increasingly labyrinthine and rewarding standalone stories of misunderstandings, faux pas, and assorted disasters –- all memorably set in the creators' unpredictable vision of New York City.
For all its greatness, though, "Seinfeld" has a few low points, and I don't just mean the clip shows. Its first season doesn't start off particularly strong, though its early episodes build a solid platform onto which later, more intricate comedic plots can expand. Likewise, season 4 spends long stretches of time focused on George (Jason Alexander) and Jerry's (Seinfeld) attempt to write a TV show,...

There's a lot of reasons "Lost" was so successful, but a big one was Hugo "Hurley" Reyes (Jorge Garcia). He's one of the few survivors on the show who gets along with pretty much everyone; he doesn't have a mean bone in his body, except of course when Sawyer tries to make fun of his mental health. Hurley's a sweet and loyal friend, and he's funny in a way that rarely seems to boil down to an easy fat joke, which 2000s-era TV loved to indulge in.
Of course, Garcia doesn't always play a nice guy. Before "Lost" aired, he starred in a season 4 episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm," playing a straight-man drug dealer for a nervous, awkward Larry David to bounce off of. Garcia's character here is still funny, but more because of how jaded and tired he is. He's only in the episode for one scene, but he makes a strong impression,...

Larry David could have had a bright future as an action-comedy hero if a certain Saturday Night Live clone had survived long enough to make its own sketch-to-movie adaptations — after all, Enter The Matzoi: The Movie couldn’t have done that much worse at the box office than MacGruber.

Is Curb Your Enthusiasm the first sitcom about an asshole? Jeff Schaffer says no.
In the academic sense, Curb Your Enthusiasm is about as textbook a comedy of manners as we’ve ever seen on television. For 12 seasons and 24 years, Larry David bristled against social norms and challenged conventions of polite society to the delight of cantankerous Curb fans everywhere, highlighting the absurdity of modern society as he sees it. However, according to entertainment journalist Joel Stein in his new essay for The Wrap titled “Bad Manners,” David and Curb Your Enthusiasm also carved out a new subgenre within the umbrella of the comedy of manners: the comedy of the asshole.
According to Stein, Curb Your Enthusiasm entered the zeitgeist during a unique period of TV history when the antihero main character was quickly becoming the most popular character archetype, just as crime dramas such as The Sopranos and The Wire...

Seinfeld wasn’t typically known for weighing in on important issues that actually affect people’s lives — unless of course you consider masturbation contests and surgeries being disrupted by projectile Junior Mints to be “important issues.” But the sixth season episode “The Couch” dove head-first into the abortion debate. And also the far less-important “cheating on your girlfriend’s book club” debate.
The episode begins with Jerry and Elaine dining at Poppie’s restaurant. When Jerry mentions the name of a popular pizza chain, Elaine insists that he shouldn’t ever order from them again because “the owner contributes a lot of money to those fanatical anti-abortion groups.” After Elaine discovers that Poppie, the Italian culinary whiz with an aversion to hand washing, is also anti-choice, she storms out of the restaurant, as do several other diners.

The message — a dig at Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump (a similar one came the night prior on Saturday Night Live‘s political opener) — was delivered in voiceover by Gary Cole, who played Kent Davidson, senior strategist to star Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Selina Meyer, who served as both the 45th and 47th president of the HBO’s show version of the United States.
The next introduction came from Matt Walsh, who played Meyer’s press secretary, Mike McLintock. “Many people assume that Kamala Harris is Selina Meyer,” he said in character, stumbling through the speech. “Im here to say she 100 percent is…not. Kamala Harris is not Selina Meyer and Selina Meyer is not Kamala Harris. Selina Meyer is,...

Cheryl Hines has become a household name for portraying the role of Larry David’s on-screen wife, Cheryl, on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. The actress received two Emmy nods for her craft but before her entry in the HBO series, she was only working on small roles.

Tonight's brand-new episode of Saturday Night Live kicks off the show's historic 50th season. So it's fitting that the premiere's host will also be making SNL history.
Hacks star Jean Smart is hosting tonight's Saturday Night Live, making her SNL debut. She'll be joined by musical guest Jelly Roll.
And when Smart comes through the door and onto the Studio 8H stage, she'll make Saturday Night Live history. The accomplished actor will be the oldest host for a premiere episode in SNL history.
Smart makes her SNL debut at 73 years old. And while that doesn't make her the oldest SNL host, she is the oldest host to get the honor of starting a new season.
The previous record was held by Woody Harrelson. The actor hosted the season 45 premiere in 2011 at the age of 58.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is willing to admit her Veep character bears some similarities to a real-life presidential nominee.
Amid the show’s election year resurgence, the Golden Globe winner reasoned that her morally bankrupt politician character Selina Meyer is more like Donald Trump than his opponent Kamala Harris.
“In Veep, I play a very unhappy vice president, and at a certain point in a run of the show, I have the opportunity to run for president,” she explained on MSNBC.
“Now, I do want to say one thing about the character I play on Veep. I do want to say I play a very, shall we say, almost narcissistic, sociopathic, mega-maniacal type of person,” added Louis-Dreyfus. “I am not a Kamala Harris type. I am possibly much more like someone from the other party whose name I shall not even utter.”

There are only a small handful of shows in the history of television that can claim to be as successful as "Seinfeld." Other shows may have lasted longer in terms of sheer volume of episodes. But as far as staying power and cultural impact goes? What Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David created is damn near untouchable. The show ran for nine seasons from 1989 to 1998. It actually could have gone at least one more season but that wasn't in the cards, at least not for the series' lead. In fact, NBC offered Seinfeld a fortune to stay for at least one more year -- a fortune he walked away from.
In a 2012 interview with Fox News, Warren Littlefield, the former President of Entertainment at NBC, explained that he tried to make "Seinfeld" season 10 happen. Keep in mind, by this point, David had already left to pursue other ventures, including HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Veep‘s election fundraiser reunion has booked some special guests.
Joining the cast and writers of HBO’s iconic political comedy for a live table read event on Sunday are Veep creator Armando Iannucci, along with Larry David, Jason Alexander and Kevin Smith.
“We’re so thrilled to have Armando, the creator of Veep, joining us,” Veep‘s showrunner David Mandel tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And I am so excited to have my old boss Larry David along with Jason Alexander. It’s kind of like a mini-Seinfeld reunion stuffed inside a Veep reunion. Like a turducken.”
Of the filmmaker of such classic franchises as Jay and Silent Bob and Mallrats, Mandel adds, “Kevin Smith is the biggest Veep fan I know and his movies have always been as wonderfully foul as Veep, so it’s a perfect combination to have him as part of our table read!”

Fans would remember Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Elaine Benes in the 1989 sitcom Seinfeld, which ran for nine seasons before wrapping up in 1998. Her role was loved by fans because of her quirky and smart personality, and sometimes brutally honest opinions, but overall a very interesting character that brought so much fun to the show.

I've never seen anything quite like writer/director Aaron Schimberg's "A Different Man," a movie that defies convention and typical dissection even as it begs you to talk about it. Is it a wry psychological horror fable, like something out of late-era William Castle? Or is it a paranoia-fueled thriller torn from the American New Wave of the '70s? Perhaps it's a biting inversion of the "body horror" subgenre, a knowing satire of how cinema has typically depicted and treated individuals with facial differences? Maybe it's just a dark, surreal comedy about a man thrust into an unusual situation, and the fallout of his increasingly deranged choices.
Yes. The answer to all of that is yes. Somehow. "A Different Man" recalls so many different filmmakers, straddles so many different genres, that it becomes unclassifiable. It writes own rules and it stands alone. I spent every minute of this...

If all TV production stopped today and no new TV shows were ever created, then every TV lover in the world were asked to name the greatest show in the history of television, there's a damn decent chance that "Seinfeld" would come out on top. Rewatchable, hilarious, and totally singular, it remains a miracle more than 25 years after it went off the air. So much of that is attributed to the core ensemble cast made up of Jerry Seinfeld (Jerry), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Elaine), Jason Alexander (George), and Michael Richards (Kramer). For nearly all of the show's 180 episodes, this group anchored the classic sitcom. We say almost because there was one episode that Alexander sat out.
Like many great shows, "Seinfeld" took a couple of seasons to find its footing. By season 3, though, it was fully off to the races. That season contains several classic episodes, including the third episode, the 20th of the show overall,...

Dr. Crane thinks that he is getting a new life but his plans are interrupted when his father moves in with him. The comedy of the series came from the highly dysfunctional relationship between Frasier and his father Niles Crane. Actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus has had a long and illustrious television career before making the jump to the global pop culture juggernaut that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There’s been a lot of talk about the last episode of Seinfeld this year after Curb Your Enthusiasm essentially remade the controversial finale, giving Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld a spiritual do-over. Sadly, Larry and Jerry didn’t continue to rewrite past embarrassments by, say, traveling back in time to stop Jerry from ziplining across Parisian rooftops in a Bee Movie costume.
But long before Curb revisited the ending of Seinfeld, Jerry Seinfeld got the opportunity to add an epilogue of sorts to the finale, thanks to Saturday Night Live and the cast of Oz.
In 1999, Seinfeld hosted SNL’s 25th season premiere with musical guest David Bowie. Coming just one week after the Saturday Night Live 25th Anniversary Special, and five months after the Seinfeld finale aired, Seinfeld used the opening monologue to joke about all the free time he suddenly had to watch Wings reruns and date married women.

It’s almost mind-boggling to know just how many well-known actors today auditioned for roles in our favorite sitcoms from back in the day. It’s hard to picture anyone other than the actors who eventually landed the parts, but it’s really fascinating to see how things turned out for everyone.

If you’re a fan of director Kevin Smith, you’ve probably seen movies like Clerks, Mallrats and Dogma, but one of his films has hardly been viewed by anyone at all.
In 2022, Smith released KillRoy Was Here, a low-budget horror anthology, loosely based on the World War II graffiti meme, and made with a crew of Florida film students. But the movie didn’t come to theaters, or streaming services, or even Betamax, it was issued exclusively as 5,555 NFTs on the Legendao platform, meaning the film was unavailable to watch unless you had the special “crypto key.”
Two years later, it still hasn’t been made available anywhere else.

Even Smith fans seemed pretty miffed at this arrangement, which essentially prevented them from ever watching the movie without shelling out big bucks to some crypto company.
But going the Nft route wasn’t always the plan for KillRoy Was Here.

All’s well that ends well. With most of HBO’s existing Emmy juggernauts — The White Lotus, The Last of Us, House of the Dragon and Euphoria — not releasing new seasons during the 2024 Emmys’ qualifying window and Succession and Barry gone, the network had been bracing for tough year-to-year comparisons.

Just eight months after the last round of Emmy celebrations — with the 2023 show pushed to January following the strikes — Hollywood is back at it, toasting this year’s top TV talents all across town. There was a lot to digest during Sunday night’s Emmys telecast, namely that telling twist of Hacks snagging best comedy over The Bear, but what happened off camera proved much more illuminating. We were there to chronicle all of the confusion, ring-kissing and sloppy standing ovations — as well as that mass exodus for the lobby bar.
The Schadenfreude Is Real
There was nothing wrong with Eugene and Dan Levy’s hosting job or monologue. That said, the room was noticeably hungry for some snark — as evidenced by the big laugh Eugene got when he said, “in the spirit of The Bear, we will not be making a joke about it being a comedy.” It truly hit better than any other punchline of the night — and proved quite prophetic when TV Academy voters were revealed to have picked joke-joke-joke comedy Hacks over the reigning restaurant dramedy for the night’s final award.

Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David famously named a number of Seinfeld characters after real people, such as Larry’s neighbor Kenny Kramer, Jerry’s college friend Michael Costanza (who sued the show for $100 million) and producer Joe Davola who, as far as we know, never stalked women while dressed as a clown.
While these characters were never played by their real-life counterparts, in the fourth season of the show, one of the fictional NBC executives who works on Jerry was very nearly played by one of the real NBC executives who worked on Seinfeld.
As recounted in Seinfeldia by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong, Seinfeld’s “first NBC liaison” Jeremiah Bosgang was instrumental in the development of the show. He ultimately left the executive game to become a comedy writer, and ended up getting a job at In Living Color. But when Seinfeld began its fourth season, which introduced the meta arc...

Curb Your Enthusiasm aired its 12th and final season earlier this year, but the show didn’t receive any farewell gifts from the Emmys on Sunday (September 15) as it was shut out once again. Larry David‘s long-running sitcom was nominated for four Emmys at this year’s ceremony, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for David. However, the show didn’t receive a single award, a familiar feeling for the HBO show, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest comedy series ever. Curb Your Enthusiasm outdid its previous record as the show with the most Outstanding Comedy Series nominations (11) without a win. Throughout its run, the series picked up a total of 55 Emmy nominations but has only won twice, for Directing in 2003 and Outstanding Single-camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series in 2012. And just like that, another hotly contested Emmy awards season race has come to a close. After last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes pushed the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony into January of this year, last night the glitzy statue-doling bash's 76th edition — this year hosted by Schitt's Creek's Eugene and Dan Levy — took place at the Peacock Theater in LA. And on a night of few major surprises, the two most nominated shows of the year — samurai epic Shōgun and kitchen-based "comedy" The Bear — got their hands ("Hands!") on 18 and 11 awards respectively, including historic Outstanding Actor and Actress In A Drama wins for the former's Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, and second Outstanding Actor and Supporting Actor wins for the latter's Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

Their opening bit avoided any controversial topics, and Dan Levy got a big laugh when he described the Emmys as broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services. Eugene also earned solid applause when he joked, “In the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes,” while addressing the show’s controversial classification as a comedy.
Speaking of The Bear, the series was awarded four Emmys during the broadcast in the Actor (Jeremy Allen White), Supporting Actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Supporting Actress (Liza Colón-Zayas), and Outstanding Directing categories. But Hacks pulled off a surprise win, snagging the Comedy Series Emmy.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards just aired on ABC, and things went about as expected. In other words, the excellent historical drama Shōgun won Best Drama Series; the caustic slice-of-life series The Bear won Best Comedy Series, since I guess it's a little more like a comedy than Shōgun; and the autobiographical stalker drama Baby Reindeer won Best Limited or Anthology Series.
Those three were the big winners of the night, with them each taking home four awards. Jeremy Allen White won Best Actor In A Comedy Series as expected, and his costar Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Best Supporting Actor. On the drama side, Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor and Anna Sawai won Best Actress; she was the one I was really invested in. She was magnificent as Mariko and if she hadn't won I would have been forced to write a strongly worded letter to whoever votes in these things.

FX’s Shogun and The Bear dominated the 76th Emmys in Los Angeles on Sunday night as they finished with 18 and 11 wins apiece, including last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards, despite an upset in the comedy series category where HBO/Max’s Hacks was the surprise winner.
Shogun was named best dramatic series and took home both lead acting wins for Hiroyuku Sanada and Anna Sawai, who became the first actress of Asian descent to win the category. The show itself became the first mostly not in the English language to win the series award.

Only eight months after the last Emmy ceremony (which was delayed due to the strikes), the Primetime Emmy Awards are back, although there were some big surprises in store. Everyone (myself included) expected The Bear to own every category it was nominated in. While it did well, winning many big categories including Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress, it lost Best Comedy Series (and actress) to Hacks.
Netflix’s controversial limited series Baby Reindeer also cleaned up, nabbing awards for star and creator Richard Gadd plus co-star Jessica Gunning. But, FX was the evening’s big winner, with their epic series, Shogun, dominating the drama categories, with the great Hiroyuki Sanada winning the prize for Best Actor, and Anna Sawai taking Best Actress, alongside the show’s Best Drama win. It’s amazing to see how Shogun’s become an absolute phenomenon, with the show...
