Though 20 years have passed since the show premiered, "Lost" remains a cultural touchstone. Its ending naturally didn't go over well with everyone, but its early seasons, at the very least, are pretty flawless. Its pilot in particular still holds up as an effective exercise in character building and tension. It's impossible to imagine its story beginning any other way, or any other actors playing the characters we'd grow to love.
The bulk of the cast remains synonymous with their roles to this day. For some, Daniel Dae Kim will always be Jin. Jorge Garcia will always be Hurley. And Matthew Fox will always be Jack, the noble hero whose point-of-view drives so much of the action in the inaugural episode of "Lost." The series lives and dies on the strength of its ensemble, but Jack Shephard is the glue that holds these disparate characters together — especially in season 1.
It might come as a surprise,...

David Henry Hwang’s Yellow Face debuted Off Broadway 17 years ago, spinning a farcical tale about a real-life Broadway controversy that had taken place some 17 years before that. How it manages to be relevant, insightful and very funny as it makes its Broadway debut tonight, all these years later, is anyone’s guess, but it does.
We can start by thanking Hwang’s terrific play – cut by a half-hour since its overlong Off Broadway version – and crackerjack direction by Leigh Silverman. Perhaps most of all, the production’s appeal rests with a cast led by an excellent Daniel Dae Kim, the Lost and Avatar: The Last Airbender star making a seamless transition to the Broadway stage.
The plot is, on its surface – but only on its surface – one big inside joke for Broadway aficionados. Inspired by real events – with liberty taken – Yellow Face recounts an event that found Hwang embroiled...

David Henry Hwang’s playfully subversive comedy Yellow Face received an Obie Award and was shortlisted for a Pulitzer Prize when it debuted off-Broadway at the Public Theater in 2007. Now it’s back—in a new Broadway revival directed by Leigh Silverman, the Tony-nominated director of Shaina Taub’s freewheeling musical Suffs. In what Hwang calls an “unreliable memoir,” the playwright—who won the Tony in 1988 for M. Butterfly—places a fictional version of himself, “Dhh,” at the center of the story.
The play takes audiences on a clever and humorous journey that blurs fact and fiction. It revisits historical events sparked by the 1990 controversy surrounding the yellow-face casting of a white actor, Jonathan Pryce, in the lead Eurasian role in the mega-musical Miss Saigon. The work also examines allegations made against his father, Henry Y. Hwang, and the increasing prejudice faced by Asian Americans in this country.

Netflix’s live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is back in production for Season 2, with the streamer revealing that Miya Cech has been cast as the fan-favorite character Toph.
In a clip released as part of Netflix’s annual Geeked Week fan event, Toph’s feet are seen in closeup before she stomps down and demonstrates her earthbending.
The 17-year-old Cech is likely best known to audiences as the younger version of Ali Wong’s character in the Netflix romantic comedy “Always Be My Maybe,” released in 2019. Funnily enough, she also played a younger version of Ali Wong’s character in an episode of the Netflix series “Beef.” She also starred in Nickelodeon’s short-lived series “The Astronauts” and had a supporting role in last year’s coming-of-age comedy “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.”
Toph was first introduced in Book 2 of the original “Last Airbender” animated series.

First released in February, Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon’s beloved animated series was renewed for two more seasons in March.

For season two, Netflix announced Miya Cech will play Toph, an earthbender who joins the crew. The video released Thursday does not reveal her face, but implies her earthbending powers.
Cech’s previous credits include one episode of the Emmy-winning Beef and Adam Sandler’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.

I know it doesn’t feel like 2004 was 20 years ago, but it was, which means many great TV shows just turned 20 years old.
Seriously, 2004 is a sneaky good year for new TV premieres. Most of the titles on this list of good TV shows turning 20 years old in 2024 were broadcast hits. The cable networks had a decent market share in the early 2000s, but we’re still a decade before the streaming industry changed the TV game.
At this point in TV history, we’re still seven years before the Game of Thrones premiere. Remember that, please!
Let’s get the list started with the best show of 2004!

Star Trek is always about boldly going and exploring the final frontier. But who said that frontier had to exist in the present? Many times, the voyages of the USS Enterprise and its sister ships in Starfleet go back to the past and sometimes to the future, where they get new perspectives on what has been and what could be.
With few exceptions, Trek‘s time travel stories are often entertaining romps or thought-provoking adventures. But a few stand above the rest, outdoing even favorites like “Time’s Arrow” or “Trials and Tribble-ations.”
This list ranks the best of Trek‘s time travel stories, but because this is Trek, we have to make a few disclaimers. We’re only talking here about stories in which someone actually moves forward or backward in time. That leaves out holodeck stories or tales in which the Enterprise finds a planet that just so...

Jeffrey Aro has worked on the stunt teams of several major films and television shows in his career – including “Yellowjackets,” “Lost in Space,” “War for the Planet of the Apes,” and more. But his role as supervising stunt coordinator on the Netflix series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” might have been the most complex and trickiest of his career. Discussions about the show started months ahead of production, and the series required Aro to not just train a cast of young actors in the ways of airbending and martial arts but also adhere to what fans of the property remember from the beloved anime series that ran on Nickelodeon in the mid-2000s.
“The first layer we wanted to ensure the cast understood was breathing. So much authentic movement can be found in the breath,” Aro tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “So we just defined four different qigong inner-energy breathing techniques.

In the final episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2, Azula’s lightning strike takes down Aang, nearly killing him. Before Azula could finish her job, Iroh facilitated the Gaang’s escape, allowing Katara to treat his wounds using her Waterbending skills. However, the Fire Nation believed that the last Airbender was gone for good this time. In the first episode of Season 3, Azula gives credit to Zuko for taking down Aang when they met their father Fire Lord Ozai.
Azula, voiced by Grey DeLisle, in the Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series
Avatar director Giancarlo Volpe revealed that it was Azula’s evil plan that motivated her to give Zuko the credit. Volpe shared that Azula was actually passing the blame as she knew about the possibility that Aang may reemerge after getting healed by Katara.

It is without a shadow of a doubt that one can say that Fire Lord Ozai and General Iroh are on two opposite ends of the spectrum. While Ozai is the character that most people remember and come back to again and again, Ozai is often relegated by most fans to the simple status of the big bad. However, we do not get to see these two characters have any sort of arc. Instead, the story plays out through Azula and Zuko.

Avatar: The Last Airbender now has two distinct live-action adaptations, from two very diverse schools of thought, especially when it comes to casting. While The Last Airbender, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, was heavily criticized for its casting choices, Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender has significantly improved upon the casting aspect of the film.
A still from M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender
Speaking with Teen Vogue, the actor Daniel Dae Kim, who plays Fire Lord Ozai, talked about the diversity of the cast that he was a part of which, consists entirely of people of Asian descent. This is in stark contrast with Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, which acts caucasian actors in place of characters of color like Aang, Katara, and Sokka, but leaves the casting of the Fire Nation and other antagonistic factions to talent of color.
Daniel Dae Kim took a subtle shot at M.

Water, Earth, Fire, Air, New Showrunners. Netflix‘s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender will switch things up for its remaining seasons as Albert Kim steps down as the wildly entertaining elemental adventure showrunner. Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani will lead the show as executive producers in the future. Boylan and Raisani are well-versed in the world of Avatar after Boylan served as co-executive producer on Season 1. At the same time, Raisani was an executive producer, director, and VFX supervisor. Kim remains a part of the series as an executive producer for seasons two and three.
Kim’s exit stems from his getting the opportunity to develop more projects at Disney. Additionally, he’s boarding the second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians as an executive producer. Avatar: The Last Airbender was renewed by Netflix for two more seasons after the series exceeded expectations at launch. While the...
