Raine-Allen Miller’s feature directorial debut Rye Lane, out now on Hulu, is a firecracker of a film exploring modern-day dating (and heartbreak) mores while providing witty commentary on the borderline-absurd ways in which millennials and zoomers have latched onto social media buzzword culture.

When it comes to lowered expectations in pop, there probably isn’t a better candidate than the Avalanches’ third record. The Australian Edm combo’s debut, Since I Left You, took the art of constructing music out of samples to a heightened level of craft; that patchwork quilt of music was one of 2000’s kickiest albums. Nearly two decades passed before we heard from the Avalanches again, and when we did, time seemed to have passed them by: 2016’s Wildflower was a far less satisfying grab-bag of voices, sound effects...

George Michael may not have had a discography to rival his fellow peers like Madonna and Prince — he released only five studio albums as a solo artist; three with Wham! — but his influence on pop music is undeniable. He scored two Grammys, eight No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, four MTV VMAs, and sold more than an estimated 100 million records worldwide. With news that the boundary-pushing icon died Sunday at the age of 53, EW is looking back on just a few of the songs that made him so special.

We've only recently begun dusting off the Best Original Song contenders section and filling it out with prospective players in the upcoming Oscar race (though the ranking is arbitrary for the moment). You can bet the wonderful "Lost Stars" from "Begin Again" will be a force, and I imagine Stephen Sondheim's original offerings for "Into the Woods" will be in play, too. But another song that deserves to be in the thick of it is "Land Ho!," Keegan DeWitt's title track from Martha Stephens and Aaron Katz's Sundance sensation. Inspired by songs like Go West's "The King of Wishful Thinking," Fine Young Cannibals' "She Drives Me Crazy" and Terence Trent D'Arby's "Wishing Well," as well as films like "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," DeWitt set out to craft something that felt of another time. It's tongue-in-cheek, but it still gets at the heart of the movie,...

MTV News' Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery face off over song selections for the 'Idol' top eight.

"American Idol" top eight
Photo: Fox
Last week, we tried to give the "American Idol" top nine some helpful advice with a selection of songs they should sing during Idols week. Of course, they mostly ignored us — except for our girl J.Sanch, who totally did Beyoncé and advanced — but we remain undeterred, which is why we're back this week with even more picks.
This time out, "Idol" is taking us back to the 1980s, which is great news for both Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler, but totally makes us wish Heejun Han was still around — we'd pay good money to see him do "Weird Al" Yankovic's "Living With a Hernia." But that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of great opportunities for the remaining eight.

Gwyneth Paltrow showed off her singing skills again during a recent trip to Beijing, China when she performed covers of Terence Trent D'Arby's Wishing Well and Cee-lo Green's F**K You at the exclusive Coach 70th Anniversary Celebration.
The actress has detailed her "Beijing Scrapbook" on her weekly Goop blog, revealing her two-day November stay in the city was a dream come true.

Boo Who Who. Doctor Who's never really been known as a programme that tugs at the heartstrings. Take your vox pops onto the street and see how many people say: "Ah! Doctor Who – the show that makes me bawl like a baby!" Which is fair enough, since its chief function is to provide brilliant escapist science fiction drama week in, week out.
But when it wants to, Doctor Who can turn on the emotional tap – in particular, the last few years have seen an upsurge in tear-jerkers. Some of the storylines have gone for the jugular by putting both characters and viewers at home through the emotional wringer. Even The Doctor has broken out the crying towel on more than one occasion – the 10th incarnation was almost on the verge of tears as he regenerated (now if only they'd have used that 4th take when he actually breaks down.

When David Hasselhoff is the first guest and he's the least odd thing that happens on "The View," you know you've had one pretty weird hour of daytime TV.
Three things we learned while watching "The View" on Wednesday (Dec. 1):
Hobbits = Rockettes?
During the Hot Topics segment, the hosts brought up the recent controversy over the producers of "The Hobbit" firing a casting agent who was seeking extras with only "light skin tones." Sherri Shepherd says that when she read the books as a girl, she had pictured a veritable rainbow of hobbits in the Shire. "Somebody told this casting director they wanted light-skinned hobbits," she asserted.
Whoopi Goldberg wasn't so sure. "Maybe she just said, There's a lot of hobbits and fairies and all kinds of stuff here" -- so we're guessing Whoopi's not a Tolkien fan -- "let me see if I can darken it up a little bit.

Will.i.Am (aka William James Adams) of The Black Eyed Peas is 35 years old today. The singer/rapper/whatever made his first big screen feature-film appearance in last year’s horrible Wolverine Origins movie (although it wasn’t his fault that it was horrible; however, I think his job could have gone to someone else with more skill). He’s done some voice-over work for cartoons, and appeared in a couple of TV shows. Nothing noteworthy. Nothing upcoming on his acting resume. But you’ll find his music on the soundtracks of many TV shows and films.
Mrs Spike Lee, Tonya Lewis Lee, is 44 years old today. Surprise to me that she has done some acting previously, in a 2002 film titled Winning Girls Through Psychic Mind Control, which was directed by Barry Alexander Brown, whom most of you will know, is a long-time Spike collaborator, editing a significant number of Spike’s films.

Many moons ago in the dark ages of the '80s, an upstart soul singer by the name of Terrence Trent D'Arby claimed that he was destined to be as big as the Beatles. Thirty years since their break-up, the Beatles are still one of the top-selling acts in music history, and an inspiration for anyone looking pick up a guitar or write a song. Where's Terrence Trent d'Arby now? He goes by the name Sananda Maitreya and is playing some gigs in Switzerland. The lesson? Be careful who you compare yourself to. Heidi Montag should heed this lesson well. Her debut album, aptly titled "Superficial," is in stores this week. According to the pop music gate crasher, "Superficial" cost her the significant sum of $2 million. Montag told Entertainment Weekly that she expects to make her money back in the first...

New York -- Media group Bertelsmann and private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co are to form a music rights management joint venture, Kkr said on Tuesday.
The deal, expected to be announced Wednesday, will create a venture 51% owned by Kkr and 49% owned by Bertelsmann, Kkr said.
Such a deal could be a more efficient way of managing rights under one roof, and would mark a more aggressive push into the music business for the privately held German media giant, which has largely exited the industry.
Bertelsmann pulled out of a recorded music joint venture with Sony Corp. in August 2008 and sold its music publishing business in 2006.
However, in October it announced plans to build a new music rights business called BMG Rights Management.
It launched that business with a selection of European music catalogs retained from the venture with Sony, which included about 200 artists such as the Scorpions and Terence Trent D'Arby,...

Tonight's the night! Adam Lambert and Kris Allen face off on the "American Idol" stage for the final time, each singing three songs. Third place finalist Danny Gokey, who was voted off last week, rates the final two, saying, "Kris is very mellow, and that's always one character trait I've always wanted. And Adam, he's just an all around great guy. I really can't fault him on anything. Adam is who he is onstage and who he is offstage. He's very creative. He lives creative. He dresses creatively. He talks from that perspective." Danny received the lowest number of votes on the night that judges Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi selected a Terence Trent D'Arby song for him to sing ... and that even though she picked it, Kara didn't love. But Danny says his downfall may have begun the week before, the rock 'n' roll-themed week, when he performed "Dream On...

To hear American Idol castoff Danny Gokey tell it, Terence Trent D'Arby may have simply finished what Aerosmith started. Though Gokey's take on D'Arby's "Dance Little Sister" drew him so-so reviews this past Tuesday night, the 28-year-old widower suspects it was his big finish to "Dream On" the week prior that laid the foundation for his eventual ouster.
"I was thinking about that this morning. Maybe that [scream] was kind of like the downfall," Gokey told TVGuide.com the day after his Idol dismissal. "It could have been one of the variables."
Gokey stands by the Aerosmith selection, explaining, "I really wanted to have a big song, and I never [sang] rock." He also goes on to say that "everything in the performance was good ...

"American Idol" Result Show sent Danny Gokey home, making Kris Allen and Adam Lambert as the Final 2. Gokey's fan support apparently was not enough to take him to be the Idol top 2, which does not cope with judge Paula Abdul's prediction of Gokey and Lambert to perform in this season American Idol final.
Gokey with Terence Trent D'arby's "Dance Little Sister" - chosen for him by judge Paula Abdul - and his own choice, "You Are So Beautiful," popularized by Joe Cocker, failed to impress public on Tuesday night show. Meanwhile, Lambert, the Los Angeles musical-theater veteran got almost all thumbs up for both his sensuous take on U2's "One," and a cat-scratch run through Aerosmith's "Cryin'", adding another record of great performance on his nearly flawless path through the final.

88 million votes came pouring in during "American Idol" Top 3 performance night but only one million separated the Top 2, meaning that the final may be a close call. America has voted, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen advance to the next round while Danny Gokey has to end the journey third place.
On Tuesday, Gokey sang Terence Trent D'arby's "Dance Little Sister" and was criticized for his awkward dancing and the song choice, which actually was Paula Abdul's pick. And then in the second round the Milwaukee native went acoustic with Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful". Simon Cowell called it "a vocal master class."
Filler of the night was a performance by season 6 winner Jordin Sparks who debuted her new single "Battlefield" accompanied by piano. Katy Perry was also in the house, singing "Waking Up in Vegas" and wearing a cape with "Adam Lambert" written on the back.

We are only mere hours away from the results show for American Idol and the anticipation is at an all time high. Last night, the final three took the stage and each performed two songs; one was a personal pick while the others were handpicked by the judges. They are did an incredible job, but unfortunately someone will be voted off tonight. The question is, who will it be? Paula Abdul picked Terence Trent D'Arby's "Dance Little Sister" for Danny Gokey and the judges were unimpressed with his somewhat screamy performance. However, when he took the stage to sing his personal song which was Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful" they all poured him with rave reviews. "American Idol"'s final three -- Adam Lambert, Kris Allen and Danny Gokey -- each performed two songs: one selected by the judges and one of their own choice -- but not before each of them made a hometown journey. Danny kicked off the night with his judges' pick: Terence Trent D'Arby's "Dance Little Sister," selected by Paula Abdul. Randy Jackson gave him a thumbs up, saying, "Lots of energy. Performing like crazy. Dude, that was dope for me." Kara liked the vocals, but not Danny's moves. She said, "I like that Paula picked that song, but the dancing was a little too gyrating for me. You are a great singer, but am I going to remember that performance?" Paula disagreed, pointing out, "I am a choreographer, and I think you did really good. "American Idol" season 8 has reached a critical stage where three remaining contestants, all men, are vying for a slot in the final run. Adam Lambert, Danny Gokey and Kris Allen performed on the stage on Tuesday, May 12, with a song which is selected by the judges and a song that they feel comfortable with. Here is the recap.
First on the stage was Danny Gokey with Paula Abdul's choice, Terence Trent D'arby's "Dance Little Sister". Randy Jackson actually liked it but Kara DioGuardi despised the part where he danced with the saxophone solo. She said she would not remember the performance tomorrow. Paula loved the whole thing, the dancing and the singing. Simon Cowell called the dancing "desperate" and the song choice bad. Paula and Simon later on argued and she punched him. Let the speculation begin.
And no, we're not talking about who's going to win "American Idol," but rather, is Simon Cowell totally kissing the show goodbye?
For weeks, there have been whispers that the cantankerous "Idol" judge might not be returning for the show's ninth season, and on Tuesday night's (May 12) show, Cowell didn't seem like he was in the mood to stick around, spending most of the night sparring with fellow judges Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson.
The battling began during Kris Allen's first performance of the night, a swooning take on OneRepublic's "Apologize" chosen for him by DioGuardi and Jackson, when DioGuardi took issue with Allen's straightforward interpretation of the song.

The Directors Label [1] was a series of DVD releases featuring noteworthy music videos and short films from a number of well-known directors including Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, Anton Corbijn and Mark Romanek. It was a great way to celebrate the short form works of various filmmakers and examine how it may have influenced their feature film work. Unfortunately it looks like the series is now pretty much dead, which is really too bad because there were so many other talented directors that still had yet to be featured. The good news, however, is that it looks like Michel Gondry will be putting on a second DVD of his own work anyway. According to Pitchfork [2], the new DVD is called Michel Gondry 2: More Videos Before & After DVD 1, and it will be available to order directly from his website [3] starting on April 14th.
