NBCUniversal feels confident heading into the 2025-26 upfront, which the media giant is touting as its biggest and most important season ever as it gears up to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

The company will own nearly 40% of big live-event viewership in the U.S. over the next two years, including Super Bowl Lx, The World Cup, The Milan Cortina Winter Olympics and the launch of the NBA on NBC and Peacock. Those franchises join Sunday Night Football, the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and NBC’s tree-lighting ceremony for Christmas in Rockefeller Center.

In an interview ahead of Monday’s presentation, NBCU’s president of advertising partnerships Alison Levin told TheWrap there’s “a lot of interest” in the big moments NBC’s content can deliver, and the “deep engagement” that such events create with viewers.

Larry David had never appeared in a commercial — at least until 2022 when he debuted in a Super Bowl ad as part of a campaign for cryptocurrency platform Ftx in a spot titled “Don’t Miss Out.” In it, he takes on his Curb Your Enthusiasm persona as a skeptic who travels through time and scoffs at inventions until he’s pitched Ftx as a safe and easy way to get into crypto. “Ehhh, I don’t think so,” he says. “And I’m never wrong about this stuff. Never.”

The ad ends with a title card that states, “Don’t be like Larry. Don’t miss out.”

Later that year, Ftx collapsed. The fallout included investors suing David, who was allegedly paid $13 million for appearing in the commercial, and other big names who endorsed the company.

Based on a True Story was a dark comedic thriller, “about a realtor, a former tennis star and a plumber who seize a unique opportunity to capitalize on America’s obsession with true crime.”

The series, which first premiered in June 2023, starred Kaley Cuoco, Chris Messina, Tom Bateman, Liana Liberato and more. Season two debuted in November 2024.

Mr Throwback starred Stephen Curry, Adam Pally and Ego Nwodim, and followed a down-on-his-luck memorabilia dealer who looks for redemption by reuniting with his sixth-grade teammate, NBA legend Stephen Curry. The show premiered in August 2024.

Peacock has closed the book on Based on a True Story, cancelling the true-crime satire after two seasons, TVLine has confirmed. The streamer has also cancelled the sports comedy Mr. Throwback, starring Adam Pally and Stephen Curry, after one season. (Our sister site Variety first reported the news.)

The news comes five months after the release of True Story’s second season, which dropped in its entirety in November. The cancellation caps its run at 16 episodes.

NBA all-star Stephen Curry and Erick Peyton’s Unanimous Media banner has bolstered its executive ranks and named Sharla Sumpter Bridgett as chief content officer.

While the two months of NBA playoffs are some of the most dramatic must-watch TV of the year, it’s the six months of regular season live-event programming that is the league’s bread-and-butter when it comes to ticket sales and TV revenue.

Last season, in an effort to create some in-season excitement, the league created an in-season tournament, the second edition of which was rebranded the Emirates NBA Cup and tipped off last week with group play before eight teams advance to the knockout round on December 10-17. The in-season tourney is, objectively, a meaningless competition. Each game still just counts as a regular season win or loss, and winning the Cup carries no competitive advantage to the winning team.
