There are entire generations that have no idea that Steve Martin was a stand-up comedian. They may recognize him as one-third of the trio that’s turned Only Murders in the Building into a streaming hit, or the long-suffering patriarch of the Father of the Bride movies, or maybe as that guy with the funny mustache who was in that one thing with Beyoncé (i.e. 2006 Pink Panther reboot). Some might have watched Parenthood or Planes, Trains and Automobiles with their parents when they were younger. He’s the celebrity who,...

The 11h episode of “Survivor 43” aired on Wednesday night and concluded with host Jeff Probst snuffing out the torch of Sami Layadi. The nineteen-year old from Las Vegas, Nevada was sent packing and became the fifth member of the jury. Did the tribe make the right decision by voting Sami out? And what were the dumbest, most shocking and most exciting moments of the last episode?
See Sami Layadi (‘Survivor 43’ exit interview): ‘I started to lose control of my fate in the game’
Top Moments of Episode 11:
1. Post Tribal Angst: Is there anything better than watching the initial reactions when the remaining castaways return to camp? Just something so unintentionally hilarious in my opinion, but I am sure that as they watch it unfold on screen, they are less jovial. Gaia is the equivalent of the Island of Misfit Toys at this point — but with chaos. Sami Layadi...

The White House was the site of a gorgeous wedding over the weekend as President Joe Biden’s granddaughter Naomi Biden married her fiancée Peter Neal. Naomi is the eldest daughter of Hunter Biden, whom he had with his first wife Kathleen Buhle.
Hunter and Kathleen were present for the ceremony as well as the President and First Lady Jill Biden. Both of Naomi’s parents walked her down the aisle, and Naomi wore a gorgeous gown and veil designed by Ralph Lauren for the ceremony.
It was a bit of a chilly morning as guests first arrived at the South Lawn around 11 a.m. on Saturday, and guests were provided with blankets and shawls while they waited. Elements of the wedding program included a vocal performance by the father of the groom: Dr. William Neal, and a reading of the E.E. Cummings poem “I Carry Your Heart With Me.

Above: Poster for Bamboo Dogs. Art by Soika Vomiter.Unless you’ve been going to film festivals around the world for the past 15 years you may not have heard of Khavn dela Cruz. I had not myself until a poster caught my eye recently. It was a design for Orphea, a 2020 collaboration between the venerable 89-year-old German filmmaker Alexander Kluge and an artist called simply Khavn. The poster had a certain iconoclastic energy and a stylish title treatment and so I decided to dig deeper. And there was a lot to uncover. Born in Quezon City in the Philippines in 1973, Khavn has made over 50 features and 150 shorts over the past 20 years, but he is also a musician with 40 albums to his name, and a writer who has published eight books of poetry, a novel, and two collections of short stories and has twice won the most prestigious literary award in the Philippines.

Winning the prize for first post-pandemic indoor stage performance, L.A. Opera will present composer Igor Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex for a single matinee June 6 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The inimitable Stephen Fry — prerecorded at London’s Abbey Road studios — will appear onscreen as the narrator of the production.
Based on a 1927 libretto written by Jean Cocteau and later translated by E.E. cummings, the 50-minute opera-oratorio recounts Oedipus’ inquiry into the murder of King Laius. Oedipus, the King of Thebes, discovers that Laius, whom he secretly killed, was actually his father and that he has slept ...

In the Terrence Malick canon, A Hidden Life is reportedly one of his lower-budgeted films, with a net production cost in the high single digits. That’s significantly below the $32 million net cost of his 2011 Cannes Palme d’Or winner Tree of Life, which starred Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and a fresh-faced Jessica Chastain.
That’s remarkable considering Malick’s reputation for lengthy productions and improvised on-the-fly shooting, and A Hidden Life, about Austrian farmer-turned-wwii conscientious objector Franz Jägerstätter, who refused to fight for the Nazis, is reportedly the director’s longest production ever from pre-production to final cut. The majority of that time was spent in the editing room.
As riveting as Malick’s E.E. Cummings visual cinematic movies are, so too are their commercial prospects risky. For the most part, his movies don’t make money, even if they have stars like Natalie Portman, Christian Bale or Ben Affleck...
