Audiences were eager to wrap up Season 4 of Netflix‘s You. The second half of the season debuted on the streamer on March 9, catapulting the latest installment back to the top of the English-language TV charts for the week.

Season 4 racked up 75.8M viewing hours for the week of March 6 to March 12. It was in the Top 10 in 86 countries.

Chris Rock‘s comedy special, Selective Outrage also made it onto the global chart, ranking at No. 8 with 17.8M hours viewed. According to Netflix, the special ranked in the Top 10 in seven countries.

Last week, the special had only made it onto the U.S. charts at No. 7. Since the special debuted on Saturday evening, it was only available for about one day of the measurement window.

On the English Films side, Idris Elba returned as detective John Luther in “Luther: The Fallen Sun.” The thriller, featuring Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis and Dermot Crowley debuted at No. 1 with 65.9 million hours viewed.

It’s also worth noting that German film “All Quiet on the Western Front” was in the fourth spot on the Non-English Films list in the week leading up to the Oscars, where it took home four Academy Awards including Best International Feature, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design and Best Music (Original Score).

At the end of the Luther TV show, Luther was arrested for various crimes but primarily for being framed for the death of Mr. Palmer, an assassin he had shot but not killed. In the film, however, we are led to believe he was incarcerated because villain David Robey (Serkis) has released incriminating evidence surrounding Luther's illegal misdeeds.

This weekend, Netflix is adding a documentary about a mysterious disappearance, the second part of the latest season of one of the platform’s most successful TV shows, and a long-awaited movie about a detective. Last weekend, Netflix welcomed a long list of licensed content, most notably the comedies Easy A, Magic Mike Xxl, and The Hangover trilogy, the musical Burlesque, the rom-com Sleepless in Seattle, the sci-fi adventure The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, and the drama movie This Is Where I Leave You, along with season 2 of the Italian TV series Framed! A Sicilian Murder Mystery, the Spanish rom-com Love at First Kiss, and season 2 of the reality TV series Next in Fashion.

Unlike last week, this weekend Netflix won’t see the addition of much licensed content, with the arrival of the horror movie World War Z, the Bollywood drama Rekka, the comedy Do Your Worst!

Luther’s back. Being banged up at the end of Series 5 didn’t stop that growly genius from taking on a new case and a new villain in Bond-inspired Netflix movie The Fallen Sun. Idris Elba is the main attraction in this thriller that mixes James Bond with serial killers and gruesome crimes: without being a great movie, it has a little bit of everything to entertain you on a Friday night and delight horror thriller lovers.

It doesn’t always work, but it knows how to correctly apply the rules of the genre and borrow ideas from other referential films. The ideas worked before, they work now, even if everything is blatantly “familiar” and the bad guy is not exactly Hannibal Lecter.

It has its charm, its BBC-like “British” photography and perhaps precisely because of that, it sometimes tends to drift over to the made-for-tv film side of the road, with some “easy” and not very elaborated sequences.

Luther: The Fallen Sun, the first movie adventure for Idris Elba’s morally (and fashionably) grey detective, follows up five series’ worth of shenanigans in the successful BBC TV thriller. That’s a lot of murder, character development and shocking moments. The Fallen Sun has been designed to work as a standalone story as well as a continuation of the show, but with a world this complex, context is everything.

Neil Cross has admitted that a well-loved series character almost returned in the Luther film.

The novelist and TV writer has created a Netflix movie based on the BBC series, titled Luther: The Fallen Sun, in which Luther is pitted against David Robey (Andy Serkis), a tech billionaire with deadly motives.

It’s the first Luther project since the fifth series in 2019, and is low on returning characters: the only other regular to appear is Dsu Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley).

However, in a new interview with The Independent, Cross opened up about the “temptation” he felt to bring back other characters in varying ways, including Ruth Wilson’s Alice Morgan.

Idris Elba’s (The Harder They Fall) seminal performance gets another chance to stretch its legs in this two-hour film. The ever-reliable Andy Serkis (Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes) and Cynthia Erivo (Widows) fill out the supporting cast to creator Neil Cross’ (Crossbones) script. For better or worse, Luther: The Fallen Sun never tries to be anything the show was not, and at times its expanded budget takes away from the stellar cinematography the show is known for. That said, the tale is gripping, the acting is top-notch, and Luther: Fallen Sun is just plain good to miss for long-time fans of the series.
