Oscar Nominee Cynthia Erivo Starred in Netflix's 'Luther: The Fallen Sun'
Image
Cynthia Erivo is now a two-time Oscar nominee after receiving immense acclaim for her performance as Elphaba in the movie musical Wicked. However, right before Wicked, Erivo acted in a much different film. The movie, Luther: The Fallen Sun, was a Netflix exclusive and incorporates multiple genres, including action, crime, and psychological thriller.

Erivo stars alongside Idris Elba, who plays the titular character, reprising his role from a popular BBC series. Erivo gets to act frequently with Elba in the film, as she spends a large portion chasing him before the two join forces. The film also turns dark as the motives of the twisted serial killer antagonist are revealed.

Fans of Harlan Coben style dark mysteries should try this 2023 movie drama
Image
Have you been watching Missing You, the latest Harlan Coben drama on Netflix? Plenty of people have as it’s a regular top ten show on the platform currently. But with just five episodes in the limited series, it’s all over far too quickly.

If you like watching the many Coben shows like that one, you may be hungry for more to watch in a similar style. His deal with Netflix means there will be others to follow. It looks like the next two from the author are being lined up now.

If you want another dark mystery full of plot twists and with big characters then Netflix will have many options. One recommendation would be to turn to the 2023 movie featuring the return of Di John Luther. The maverick UK cop was always highly watchable during his five TV series. A movie promises more of the same but in a shorter time frame.

‘Baltimore’ Review: Imogen Poots’ Resolute Fury Fuels a Portrait of a Real-Life Heiress Turned Revolutionary
Image
Baltimore — whose title refers to a village in County Cork, Ireland — begins in the midst of a heist, but it’s not a heist film. And its starting point is not just any heist but the largest art theft in history, pulled off by four Ira members led by a onetime debutante, Rose Dugdale. She’s the focus of Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor’s concise and intimate film, and she’s played with a compelling mix of ferocity, focus and conscience by Imogen Poots.

As a few incisive flashbacks reveal, Rose grew up in immense wealth but never quite bought into the entitlement and expectations. At age 10, on her first fox hunt, her sympathies lie with the fox. On a museum visit, the teenage Rose baffles her mother when she’s moved by a painting’s focus on a Black woman; Mum sees a piece of pottery as the...

‘Baltimore’ Review: Imogen Poots Carries a True-Life Marxist Art Heist Film
Image
Rose Dugdale has the kind of life story where, if she didn’t happen to be a Marxist, it would feel tailor-made for a Hollywood film. The heiress of a millionaire English family, Dugdale was born into an easy life: finishing school, debutante balls, and a place in the rarefied halls of Oxford. But Dugdale rejected the wealth handed to her and, after an incident in which she attempted to steal 82,000 pounds worth of silverware and paintings from her parents’ estate, left England to become a member and leader in the Irish Republican Army, fighting to end British rule of Northern Ireland.

“Baltimore,” a new feature film starring Imogen Poots as Dugdale, occasionally jumps somewhat awkwardly through this woman’s path to radicalization, but the film, from writer, director, and editor duo Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor, largely anchors itself on the nine-day sliver of time she’s most notorious for.

Luther: The Fallen Sun Writer & Director On Leaving London & Losing Alice
Image
A sequel to the ever-popular Luther series, Luther: The Fallen Sun has been steadily ranking in Netflix's top 10 since its release. Disgraced Dci John Luther (Idris Elba) opens the film in jail, but his services are needed once more when a deadly villain (played by Andy Serkis) begins manipulating the internet's dark underbelly. While the series is usually tied to the rainy streets of London, The Fallen Sun widens the scope and even takes Luther to Iceland before the credits roll.

Jamie Payne wrote Luther: The Fallen Sun from a screenplay by series creator Neil Cross, and the duo's affinity for the original show shines through. Fan-favorite characters such as Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley) remain vital to the plot, but new faces include Cynthia Erivo as Dci Odette Raine, whose disdain for Luther's methods is a familiar-yet-different twist on his usual interactions at the office. And while Alice (played...

Luther: The Fallen Sun is celebrating two weeks in Netflix's top 10, proving that the demand for stories about tortured London detectives is as high as it's ever been. The latest movie picks up after the most recent season of Luther, which ended in 2019, and finds ex-dci John Luther still locked up for his less-than-savory methods of obtaining justice. But when a twisted criminal named David Robey starts terrorizing the town through the internet, Luther's old colleagues have no choice but to call him in.

Written by series creator Neil Cross and directed by The Hour's Jamie Payne, Luther: The Fallen Sun reunites its star with fan-favorite characters such as Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley) while also introducing new elements, including Cynthia Erivo as Dci Odette Raine, who is a stickler for rules until she must choose between them and her own child. Robey runs the Red Bunker, an eerily...

Idris Elba On What Comes After Luther: The Fallen Sun
Image
Weeks after its initial release, Luther: The Fallen Sun is still defending its spot in the top 10 for Netflix US as well as being crowned the #1 Netflix movie on a global scale. Though the BBC series has been off the air for years, the love for John Luther lingers in audiences everywhere. Written by creator Neil Cross and directed by Jamie Payne (The Hour), The Fallen Sun opens with Luther in prison but ends up taking him all the way to Iceland.

Aside from his reliable friend Dci Martin Schenk (series regular Dermot Crowley), Luther: The Fallen Sun introduces new faces to tell its story. Andy Serkis (still best-loved for Lord of the Rings) plays the terrifying David Robey, who runs the sinister Red Bunker, while Cynthia Erivo (soon to be seen in the upcoming Wicked movie) plays Dci Odette Raine, who isn't sure she can trust Luther's methods. But...

Tales From The Luther: The Fallen Sun Red Carpet
Image
After five seasons on the BBC network, Luther has finally made the leap to feature films with Luther: The Fallen Sun. This movie continues where the TV show left off, with Dci John Luther sent to jail for his history of bending the rules in his dogged pursuit of justice against the most ruthless serial killers in London. However, Luther has unfinished business with a sadistic murderer, which prompts the disgraced detective to escape from prison in an effort to take down his most dangerous opponent yet.

Armed with a bigger budget than a typical TV episode, The Fallen Sun completely opens up the scale of a Luther story, featuring bigger and more bombastic scenes, including a pulse-pounding sequence set at London's famous Piccadilly Circus. In addition to Idris Elba returning as the title character, the film also features Dermot Crowley reprising his role as Martin Schenk, as well as a slew of newcomers,...

Luther's Movie Ending Prevents Idris Elba's Bond Casting For The Best Reason
Image
This article contains spoilers for Luther: The Fallen Sun.Idris Elba may be a fan-favorite casting choice for the next James Bond, but Luther: The Fallen Sun prevents this in the best possible way. Following on from the hit BBC crime drama Luther, Luther: The Fallen Sun follows the titular detective's investigation into a dangerous serial killer, played by The Lord of the Rings' Andy Serkis, with a level of derangement rivaled only by Gollum. Elba's John Luther, however, falls victim to the killer's machinations and is finally arrested, after evading the law for his morally dubious actions for five seasons.

Elba has been one of the favorite choices to take over the role of James Bond from Daniel Craig for nearly as long as the actor played 007. However, the ending of Luther: The Fallen Sun teases that the actor will ultimately not be the one to replace Craig...

Luther: Why the Series Ending Was Changed for the Fallen Sun Movie on Netflix
Luther fans finally saw Idris Elba's character return in the Luther: Fallen Sun movie on Netflix, but a small continuity change was made to the title character's storyline.

Starring Elba, Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis, and Dermot Crowley, the Luther: Fallen Sun movie follows Dci John Luther (Elba) after his release from prison as he hunts down a serial killer in London.

At the end of the Luther TV show, Luther was arrested for various crimes but primarily for being framed for the death of Mr. Palmer, an assassin he had shot but not killed. In the film, however, we are led to believe he was incarcerated because villain David Robey (Serkis) has released incriminating evidence surrounding Luther's illegal misdeeds.

Luther: The Fallen Sun Ending Explained – So, Now What For Idris Elba’s Detective?
Image
Picking up where Series 5 of the TV show left off, Luther: The Fallen Sun sees Idris Elba’s brilliant but disgraced copper breaking out of the slammer to hunt down serial killer David Robey (Andy Serkis). A twisted tech genius with dodgy hair and an even dodgier fashion sense, Robey is luring his victims by hijacking their digital footprints and using their deepest, darkest secrets – or as he calls it, their “shame” – against them.

Robey is one of the franchise’s creepiest and most sadistic baddies. Not only is he able to properly go toe-to-toe with Luther both physically and mentally, but his vast resources allow him to carry out his crimes on a much grander scale than we’re used to seeing – think a very, very messed-up Bond villain.

Luckily, Dci John Luther – equipped with his signature grey coat and blood-red tie – is on hand to save the day,...

This weekend, Netflix is adding a documentary about a mysterious disappearance, the second part of the latest season of one of the platform’s most successful TV shows, and a long-awaited movie about a detective. Last weekend, Netflix welcomed a long list of licensed content, most notably the comedies Easy A, Magic Mike Xxl, and The Hangover trilogy, the musical Burlesque, the rom-com Sleepless in Seattle, the sci-fi adventure The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, and the drama movie This Is Where I Leave You, along with season 2 of the Italian TV series Framed! A Sicilian Murder Mystery, the Spanish rom-com Love at First Kiss, and season 2 of the reality TV series Next in Fashion.

Unlike last week, this weekend Netflix won’t see the addition of much licensed content, with the arrival of the horror movie World War Z, the Bollywood drama Rekka, the comedy Do Your Worst!

Luther: The Fallen Sun Cast – Meet Idris Elba’s Movie Co-Stars
Image
Luther’s back. Being banged up at the end of Series 5 didn’t stop that growly genius from taking on a new case and a new villain in Bond-inspired Netflix movie The Fallen Sun. And, since most of his former colleagues were spectacularly killed in the line of duty, the man’s being joined by a fresh cast.

Dermot Crowley returns as John Luther’s former boss Dsu Martin Schenk, who’s joined by Cynthia Erivo as Luther’s replacement on the team, and far from his biggest fan. Going toe-to-toe with Idris Elba’s John will be Andy Serkis as surveillance tech billionaire David Robey, possibly the detective’s darkest foe yet.

And what of Ruth Wilson’s Alice, last seen taking a short drop off a tall tower? She’s not listed among the cast this time, but there’s no saying that wily brainbox won’t find...

Idris Elba in Luther: Verso l'inferno (2023)
‘Luther: The Fallen Sun’ Movie Review: A Very “British” BBC Thriller
Idris Elba in Luther: Verso l'inferno (2023)
Luther: The Fallen Sun is an action movie directed by Jamie Payne starring Idris Elba. With Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis and Dermot Crowley.

Idris Elba is the main attraction in this thriller that mixes James Bond with serial killers and gruesome crimes: without being a great movie, it has a little bit of everything to entertain you on a Friday night and delight horror thriller lovers.

Movie Review

It doesn’t always work, but it knows how to correctly apply the rules of the genre and borrow ideas from other referential films. The ideas worked before, they work now, even if everything is blatantly “familiar” and the bad guy is not exactly Hannibal Lecter.

It has its charm, its BBC-like “British” photography and perhaps precisely because of that, it sometimes tends to drift over to the made-for-tv film side of the road, with some “easy” and not very elaborated sequences.

Luther Recap: What Happened Before The Fallen Sun Movie?
Image
Luther: The Fallen Sun, the first movie adventure for Idris Elba’s morally (and fashionably) grey detective, follows up five series’ worth of shenanigans in the successful BBC TV thriller. That’s a lot of murder, character development and shocking moments. The Fallen Sun has been designed to work as a standalone story as well as a continuation of the show, but with a world this complex, context is everything.

So, if you want to refresh your memory so you’re ready to catch all of The Fallen Sun’s cheeky references, or even if you’re new to the world of Luther and want to find out how we got to this point, here’s a handy primer on the story so far…

After an inquiry into his arrest of serial killer Henry Madsen, who’s been left comatose with serious injuries, Dci John Luther...

‘There’s always temptation’: Luther creator says he almost brought back adored character in new movie
Image
Neil Cross has admitted that a well-loved series character almost returned in the Luther film.

The novelist and TV writer has created a Netflix movie based on the BBC series, titled Luther: The Fallen Sun, in which Luther is pitted against David Robey (Andy Serkis), a tech billionaire with deadly motives.

It’s the first Luther project since the fifth series in 2019, and is low on returning characters: the only other regular to appear is Dsu Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley).

However, in a new interview with The Independent, Cross opened up about the “temptation” he felt to bring back other characters in varying ways, including Ruth Wilson’s Alice Morgan.

“Alice is not in this film, but that's not a kind of an act of exclusion – it's a sin of omission,” he said. “If anything, it's not an attempt to prove anything.

“This film had to thread an incredibly difficult needle,...

Cynthia Erivo Dives Into The Moral Ambiguity Of Luther: The Fallen Sun
Image
Luther: The Fallen Sun is a chance for John Luther to stretch his legs once more after the fifth season of the beloved series ended in 2019. When audiences last saw him, he was stripped of his Dci title and headed for prison after the apparent death of his lover and accomplice Alice. But when a madman named David Robey (played by the ever-fantastic Andy Serkis) begins a new reign of tech terror, it's time for Luther to step out from under the shadows once more and take him down.

Luther: The Fallen Sun sees Idris Elba reprise his iconic role for the Netflix film, and he is joined by longtime friend and associate Martin Schenk (played by Dermot Crowley). But it's not all familiar faces, and Ruth Wilson's Alice is nowhere to be found. Instead, Luther must face off — intellectually speaking — against the straightlaced Dci Odette Raine, who would...

Luther: The Fallen Sun Review - Idris Elba Is Perfect In This Wild Thriller
Image
Luther: The Fallen Sun, directed by Jamie Payne (The Hour), is a great example of what television movies can be. Idris Elba’s (The Harder They Fall) seminal performance gets another chance to stretch its legs in this two-hour film. The ever-reliable Andy Serkis (Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes) and Cynthia Erivo (Widows) fill out the supporting cast to creator Neil Cross’ (Crossbones) script. For better or worse, Luther: The Fallen Sun never tries to be anything the show was not, and at times its expanded budget takes away from the stellar cinematography the show is known for. That said, the tale is gripping, the acting is top-notch, and Luther: Fallen Sun is just plain good to miss for long-time fans of the series.

When the deranged David Robey (Serkis) unleashes a string of complex murders on London, Dci John Luther (Elba) is on the case again. But...

Movie Review: Luther: The Fallen Sun
Image
Idris Elba returns in Luther: The Fallen Sun as Dci John Luther, reprising the role he played in twenty-one episodes of the BBC television series from 2010-19. For the most part, the film plays well as a crime drama, but the cinematic debut of the character seems less focused on telling a self-sustaining story within the already constructed universe of the television series, and more intent on proving that Elba would have indeed made a potent James Bond.

As Luther: The Fallen Sun begins, the disgraced detective is behind bars, being taunted by the cyber psychopath he failed to capture, leading to his incarceration. As the taunting increases, along with the killer’s crimes, Luther decides he must break out of prison and catch this maniac by any means necessary. Once out, Luther mounts his own investigation to identify and apprehend the killer, even as the authorities – including the Police...

Luther: The Fallen Sun Review – Bigger Isn’t Always Better
Image
Developing a successful TV show into a movie is a tricky old business: go too big and you risk jumping the shark; play it safe and it’s slightly more polished business as usual. For the most part, Luther: The Fallen Sun – the first feature-length outing for Idris Elba’s beloved, rule-bending detective – plots a skilful course between the two. But a Netflix-sized upgrade, it seems, can be both a gift and a curse…

Serving as both a continuation of the show and a standalone adventure, The Fallen Sun is surprisingly self-contained, with just enough exposition up-front to ensure that newbies aren’t lost and a handful of references to past cases littered throughout for fans to pick up on.

As hinted at by his arrest at the end of series five, The Fallen Sun sees Dci John Luther (Elba) headed for a lengthy stint in a maximum-security prison...

‘Luther: The Fallen Sun’ Review: Bigger Isn’t Better in a Messy, Oversized TV Show Expansion
Image
Misery is part of the “Luther” equation. It’s visited on suspects and victims and detectives and, to some extent, the audience watching it. Over five seasons, it’s been a cornerstone of the BBC crime drama, a neverending series of rock-bottoms.

That overpowering darkness has been a major “Luther” throughline, coupled with the shuffling in and out of the coworkers and compatriots of Dci John Luther (Idris Elba). He’s had partners — in most senses of the word — die in front of him. He’s uncovered grisly killings and mutilated bodies. Those five seasons have been a steady dose of one-upping, to see how much one man can survive.

So after almost a decade of rumblings, the long-discussed “Luther” movie has arrived. “Luther: The Fallen Sun” is more adaptation than extension, changing the environment and Luther’s toolset in a way that makes it accessible for viewers who haven...

Luther: The Fallen Sun review – Netflix film makes a good case for Idris Elba as the next Batman
Image
Luther, the BBC crime drama starring Idris Elba as a rule-adverse detective, was swiftly overtaken by cinematic ambition. What began as a relatively humble cop series set in a crime-ridden London became increasingly more absurd as it went on. By its fifth series, Luther was dealing with a killer in a clown mask shooting people full of nails. Luther: The Fallen Sun, a feature-length revival by Netflix, feels like an all-too-logical extension. The budget’s been upped considerably. Hollywood’s own Andy Serkis and Cynthia Erivo have been air-lifted in for support. And it’s fun, in the patently ridiculous way these sorts of zhuzhed-up thrillers tend to be.

The Fallen Sun isn’t much of a Bond audition for Elba – who’s had to shoot down rumours he’s the next 007 yet again this week – but it’s a solid argument for making him the next Batman. Here’s...
