Cartoons from the 1980s hit differently. Maybe it was the fact they were all clever subliminal advertisements to bankrupt parents into buying endless merchandise and unnecessary items like Michaelangelo's Sewer Exploration Belt (though this author still asked for two of them for his birthday). The point is these animated series continue to be spoken about to this day, remaining cherished pop culture artifacts.
But how in the world do you rank the best of the best? That proved tricky, to be honest. The /Film team wrestled with all options, considering which shows had the greatest legacy and influence -- both then and now. Heck, I even suggested a Hell in a Cell match to settle a spot for "BraveStarr," but the idea was vetoed as "too dangerous" or something. Nonetheless, shoutout to "BraveStarr," "My Little Pony," and "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends," as these shows deserve honorable mentions here.

There was so much to love about the '90s "X-Men" animated series that creating a revival show in 2024 seemed like a risky maneuver. But Disney's legacy sequel series, "X-Men '97," debuted to great reviews, providing '90s kids everywhere with a straight shot of animated nostalgia. Of course, the 2024 version of the show was a lot cleaner than the Og series, which originally ran from 1992 to 1997 on Fox Kids. "X-Men" debuted during a time when hand-drawn animation done under a tight budget and often shipped overseas for coloring gave all our favorite cartoons a charmingly janky aesthetic. That same feel was missing from the revival show, but that was really the only thing that felt different.
To make sure this particular nostalgia-fest hit properly, Disney and Marvel ensured they did everything they could to make "X-Men '97" feel as close to the original series as possible. The show was...

The highly anticipated Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was released on September 6, 2024, and many of the original actors returned for the Beetlejuice sequel, however, the franchise already had a great sequel 35 years prior. Following the success of Beetlejuice in 1988, director Tim Burton created, and executive produced, a Canadian animated TV series called Beetlejuice in 1989, which was loosely based on the original movie. The animated Beetlejuice series followed a young Lydia Deetz (Alyson Court) and her friend Beetlejuice (Stephen Ouimette) on their wild adventures in the mortal world and the Neitherworld in a four-season run which spanned 94 episodes.
Beetlejuices animated series had a unique art style, and its comedy derived from slapstick humor, wordplay, and allusions. The majority of Beetlejuices episodes focus on Beetlejuices relationship with Lydia, with Lydia being the voice of reason to the wild schemes of Beetlejuice, and Beetlejuice helping Lydia be more confident. The animated series ran for two years,...

In a rare move, Tim Burton stepped in to direct the 1989 Beetlejuice cartoon that was based on his own film from a year before. Even though this animated sequel series initially came about due to the horror comedy being immensely successful, ironically, only the characters of Beetlejuice, Lydia Deetz, and Harry the Hunter (a.k.a. The Shrunken Headed Guy) were kept around. All the other names and faces featured in this cartoon were original creations. This not only included Lydias school pals such as Percy and Bertha, but also Beetlejuices new neighbors, like a pumped-up skeleton who was obsessed with his shape, a tap-dancing spider who used to be a famous cheerleader, and a very tall monster covered in red fur.

Whether or not you side with Micheal Keatons recent comments about the scrapped Batgirl movie or that his Batman paved the way for cinematic universes, one of the actors most undeniable roles had to be in 1988s Beetlejuice. Thanks to Keatons hyperactive interpretation of the lead role a mischievous and gnarly ghost wanting nothing more than to cause havoc in the real world this big-screen combination of horror and comedy has easily evolved into a franchise.
The paranormal tricksters relationship with Lydia Deetz (played by a young Winona Ryder) is a connection unlike any other and, therefore, has transcended into other mediums, including video games, a stage musical (that was brought to an end and then revived) as well as an animated television show that lasted four seasons.

Just as Lydia Deetz is strange and unusual, Winona Ryder found her experience reprising the character for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to be just that. After all, not only has it been more than 35 years since the original Beetlejuice came out but Ryder has actually never starred in a sequel before.
Speaking with Empire, Winona Ryder had a hard time describing just what it was like reprising Lydia Deetz for the Beetlejuice sequel. “I struggle to find the words. It’s just one of the most special experiences that I’ve ever had. The fact that we’re coming back to it, it’s…It’s beyond…I don’t know if I’ve ever felt this way.” Ryder also noted that “this is a first for me. I’ve never revisited a character, ever.”

This article contains spoilers for X-Men ‘97 episode 4.
X-Men ‘97 episode 4 “Motendo” brings back a familiar villain, Mojo (voiced by David Errigo Jr.). Per his usual M.O., Marvel’s weirdest baddie kidnaps a couple members of the X-family, transporting them to a dangerous world of entertainment where they have to fight for their lives for his amusement. This time, newcomer Sunspot (Gui Agustini) and Jubilee (Holly Chou) are the victims, and on the latter’s 18th birthday, no less.
Sunspot and Jubilee are forced inside a 16-bit video game which bears a striking resemblance to the classic X-Men game created for the Sega Genesis (which was perhaps the only other X-Men property which had a theme song that could rival the animated series), and when inside this digital nightmare, the two must fight their way out. Mojo throws everything he can at the young mutants, but along the way,...

Warming: this article contains spoilers for the "X-Men '97" episode "Motendo / Lifedeath, Part 1," so proceed with caution.
Since "X-Men '97" is a revival of "X-Men: The Animated Series," the creators of the nostalgic continuation of the Marvel mutants' story made sure to bring back as many of the original voice actors as they could. Sadly, both Norm Spencer (Cyclops) and David Hemblen (Magneto) passed away in 2020, making them unable to return, but Ray Chase and Matthew Waterson are doing fantastic jobs filling in their respective shoes. Meanwhile, Jennifer Hale replaces Catherine Disher as Jean Grey, Chris Potter switched from Gambit to Cable for "X-Men '97," with A.J. The following contains major spoilers for X-Men '97 Season 1, Episode 4, "Motendo / Lifedeath - Part 1," now streaming on Disney+.
After getting off to an incredibly strong start, X-Men '97 shows its first flaws with its fourth episode -- which is more accurately two episodes in one package. As the title indicates, "Motendo / Lifedeath - Part 1" splits its already relatively short running time between two separate stories. The result is still entertaining, but something that doesn't mesh well together, because the two plots couldn't be more different in tone.
"Motendo" is a stand-alone Jubilee story, and the first time that the Disney+ series has done a plotline that isn't connected to its ongoing arc about the Magneto-led X-Men. In theory, this is a good idea since not every premise can be tied back to that bigger picture. However, the way it plays out -- no pun about the video game concept...

‘X-Men ’97’ premiered yesterday on Disney+ with its first two episodes, and initial reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. The show debuted with a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics hailing it as the “Best Marvel release in years.” Metacritic also awarded the show a high score of 82, signifying “Universal acclaim,” a rare achievement for recent Marvel Studios projects.
The series capitalizes on its biggest strength: being a direct continuation of ‘X-Men: The Animated Series.’ It strives to emulate the characters and animation of its predecessor while presenting a more mature and “raw” plot compared to typical Marvel fare.

While X-Men '97 brings back many original voice actors, with some of them reprising the same roles, Smith was not among them. In 1992, an animated series called X-Men: The Animated Series debuted in the US. This was Marvel Comics’ second attempt at an animated X-Men series after the pilot series X-Men: Pryde of the X-Men was not revived for a second season. Unlike the latter, X-Men: The Animated Series gained critical acclaim, and had very high ratings for a Saturday morning cartoon series. The show reached a total of 23 million households.
The finale of the series, which was aired in 1997, saw the death of Professor Charles Xavier. This put the future of the X-Men into his students’ hands. At the time, Jean Grey had said fate lay in their hands. As fate would have it, the iconic Saturday morning cartoon series featuring its classic animation style is returning in a new show for 2024, and fans are hit by nostalgia as some relive their childhood memories through the trailer itself.

The wait for X-Men '97 may be ending sooner than previously thought.
In development for years, X-Men '97 serves as a continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series, picking up right where the original left off. Several of the same cast members have returned with the classic art style carrying over for the new show to make the revival seem as seamless as possible. The biggest issue that fans have faced has been the wait, and there were previously reports that the show wouldn't be arriving until later in the spring, somewhere around April or May 2024. Per The Direct, it was more recently confirmed during The Walt Disney Corporation's earnings presentation on Wednesday that the series is set to debut on Disney+ in "early 2024," which could suggest the new show's arrival is coming earlier than expected.

In a year of reduced Marvel output, there are still a lot of interesting comic book adaptations emerging in 2024 from both Sony and Marvel Studios. As it stands, Deadpool 3 is the only MCU film releasing in theaters this year, but the Sony side of Marvel has three movies heading to multiplexes, including Kraven the Hunter, which was previously set to make its debut in 2023.

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the animated series adaptation of Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice,“ which aired from 1989 to 1991 on ABC/Fox Network.
In the eighties and nineties, studios were never shy about taking mature intellectual properties and cashing in on them by giving them their own animated spinoffs for kids. Among the rather extensive list were direct G-rated adaptations like “Rambo,” “Conan,” “Ace Ventura,” and even “Police Academy.” One of the most notable, and more widely celebrated adaptations was of Tim Burton’s 1988 hit film Beetlejuice. While the original movie excelled in being as menacing, bizarre, and raunchy as possible, executive producers Tim Burton and David Geffen opted for a more kid friendly variation of the “Ghost with the Most” for the animated series.
Aimed more for the 8-12 Saturday morning cartoon demographic, the animated show thankfully stuck true to much of what made the movie so entertaining.

Following the massive success of this year’s Resident Evil 2 remake, it’s no wonder that Capcom is open to revisiting some of its other classics and dusting off various intellectual properties. With that in mind, fans have already begun pondering the possibilities of modernized versions of the first Dino Crisis and Devil May Cry games, in addition to several others.
To be quite honest, I believe Resident Evil 3: Nemesis to be next on the company’s agenda, as that’s already said to be in development. But after that, I do think there’s a good possibility a Code: Veronica remake could follow. After all, there’s already been much demand for it online, so why not give the people what they want?
Should Capcom indeed want to revisit Code: Veronica somewhere down the line, voice actress Stephanie Panisello is apparently down for reprising her Claire Redfield role.

Factory announced a multi-property alliance to bring the memorable Warner Bros. television series “MADtv” (seasons two though five) and the animated series “Beetlejuice” to the home entertainment marketplace. The multi-year alliance provides Shout! Factory with exclusive DVD rights to all 94 episodes of “Beetlejuice” for home entertainment releases in the United States and Canada. The announcement was made by Shout! Factory founders Richard Foos, Bob Emmer, and Garson Foos.

Admittedly, I have an unjustifiable level of love for this cartoon. It wasn’t the best of its time, nor did it always make sense the way the episodes were arranged with no respect to an overarching timeline, but it was fun. It has sappy one-liners from Wolverine and Gambit; it cements Cyclops as the dickish leader; and it lets many of the great villains from the X-Men universe get a moment in the spotlight. Sure, it was inferior to Bruce Timm’s spectacular Batman: The Animated Series, but what cartoon of that era wasn’t? Despite its chronological shortcomings, the series as a whole maintained a superb visual aesthetic, great characterization, and interesting plots – at least until the end of the season. Just like Batman, which changed its name to The Adventures of Batman & Robin and altered its awesome opening sequence, some studio exec decided the X-Men series needed...

Usually we see animated cartoons as a separate entity from live-action movies, or else they spawn a major movie event or franchise. This would be the case with G.I. Joe, which opens this Friday, August 7 in theaters nationwide. However, there are a select number of memorable animated television series that were based on a live-action movie. Having broke the mold in that sense, we decided to come up with our list of the Top Ten Animated Series Based on a Movie. Each of these animated series garnered various levels of success and popularity from various eras on TV nostalgia.
10. Tales From the Cryptkeeper (1993)
This early 90’s cartoon of course was based on the HBO Series and two Movies (Demon Night and Bordello of Blood). Of course the content was completely watered down, taking out the violence and other questionable material.Instead the episodes were about machines that turned people into wax,...

Chicago – Instead of playing one of the most anticipated games of the last few years, “Resident Evil 5,” fans of one of gamings most influential franchises are being asked to watch what is essentially a 96-minute cut scene that serves as a prequel or appetizer for what is to come in 2009.
Not as much fun as the Milla Jovovich movies and not nearly as well-conceived or written as the games, “Degeneration” feels like an afterthought, stuck between the world of the movie trilogy and the world of some of the best games ever made. Without the B-movie charm of the former or the blockbuster action of the latter, “Resident Evil: Degeneration” ends up as the last thing fans of the “Re” movies or games usually think of their beloved franchise, forgettable.
The most remarkable thing about “Degeneration” is how disposable the entire affair feels from the very beginning. The CGI visuals...

Video game heavyweight Capcom and Sony Pictures teamed up to create Resident Evil: Degeneration, the first full-length animated feature based on the popular game series Resident Evil. Unlike the live-action films starring Milla Jovovich, Degeneration takes place within the same universe as the video games, trailing the game’s two main characters Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield. In the English version of the film, Paul Mercier voiced the part of Leon and Alyson Court voiced the part of Claire. The film made its premiere in Japan on October 11th, 2008 at the Tokyo Game Show, following a limited U.S. release on November 13th in New York City and November 18th in Los [...]...
