Two high-profile new streaming platforms, Apple TV+ and Disney+, launched last month, just as awards season was starting to gear up. Following the Gotham Awards and AFI Awards earlier this week, which both feature TV categories, today the WGA Awards unveiled their TV nominees.
The list included the first major nomination for a program from the two newly launched streamers, Disney+’s upcoming original movie Togo, which is being released Dec. 20. Its writer, Tom Flynn, was nominated in the Original Longform category alongside writers for HBO’s Chernobyl and True Detective and AMC’s The Terror: Infamy.
This is the first creative awards nomination for a Disney+ program. The marketing campaign for the platform’s Star Wars world drama series, The Mandalorian, was recently nominated for the 57th Annual Icg Publicists Guild Awards.

Yes, yes, there’s Willem Dafoe, but Ericson Core’s moving historical drama “Togo” is a canine-obsessed affair. And why shouldn’t it be? The Disney+ original joins a long line of classic predecessors like “Balto,” “Iron Will,” “White Fang,” and a ballooning number of “Call of the Wild” adaptations, though this one has a bit more on its mind than the rest of its doggy brethren. While even casual dogsledding fans likely know the name of Balto — a brave sled dog who inspired both his own animated franchise and a popular statue in Central Park — few are familiar with Togo, arguably the real hero of the so-called “Great Race of Mercy.”

According to Deadline, Point Break remake director Ericson Core has signed on to direct The Claim, a drama film that doesn’t sound like it would be an especially big deal if not for the fact that it was written by La La Land’s Damien Chazelle. The movie is about a father with a “criminal background” whose daughter gets kidnapped, but while trying to track her down, a different couple shows up and makes “mysterious claims” that the child actually belongs to them. That makes it sound like the other couple was probably behind the kidnapping, but maybe the daughter was taken by a third party, and the criminal dad has to fight with the mysterious couple to prove that she’s really his daughter and not theirs.

Exclusive: There has been mass slaughter going on in the Western Sudan for years and outside of George Clooney using his celebrity (with his Dad) to draw attention to the atrocities, not much has been done in Hollywood. Now, a film is being made about the genocide based on an international bestselling book from Daoud Hari entitled The Translator. Ericson Core, who established himself as the cinematographer of The Fast and the Furious and then directed Disney’s Invincible and then the Alcon/Warner Bros.’ actioner Point Break, will helm this incredible story of one man who made a difference. The book was a memoir by Hari (friends call him “David”) whose life has been one of courage — a man who has truly made a difference in the world by putting together an on-the-ground account of the genocide in Darfur. The project is being produced by Zero Gravity, Sixth Sense and Big Boy Films from an adaptation by Alex Graves. With the Armenian genocide there was one journalist who was largely responsible for telling that story to the West. For the Irish, the stories were passed down through generations of what the British did to the people. The Jewish genocide was recorded on film, it was widely reported on and stories were also passed down through generations. Paul Rusesabagina’s story helped focus attention on the genocide in Rwanda through the Philip Gourevitch book We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families in 1998 (later made into the Terry George helmed movie Hotel Rwanda). Hari, a Zaghawa tribesman who was among the hundreds of thousands attacked and driven from their homes by the Sudanese government, is (like Clooney) a messenger for the brutality that the people have suffered in Darfur. Hari survived the government-fueled militia attacks and although his village was burned to the ground and his family was decimated and displaced, he found safety across the border. He then eagerly offered his services as a translator and a guide to make sure the West knew what was going and the brutality would be reported on. With his high school knowledge of languages, he went back into extreme danger, risking his life multiple times, so that the story of his people would be told, hoping all the while that there was still time to save them. This heroes story is being produced specifically by Christine and Mark Holder (Zero Gravity) with Richard Harding and Sam Feuer. Priscilla Moralez is the executive producer.

Action movies possess their own special kind of artistry. While there are numerous techniques in the action filmmaker’s arsenal – jump cuts, montages, hard-pumping soundtracks, body cams – putting them all together with a certain degree of panache and energy takes a very particular kind of filmmaker. Kathryn Bigelow, James Cameron, James Wan, Justin Lin, John McTiernan, even the oft-derided Zack Snyder – these are the masters of the kinetic art form.
Director Ericson Core, however, is not one of those people, as he’s put together one of the most boring action films ever made with Point Break, which base-jumps its way onto Blu-ray this month.
Point Break is a remake of Kathryn Bigelow’s cult classic of the same name, and more or less follows the original’s basic plot. Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey) is a rookie FBI agent sent out after a gang of thieves who keep making off...

It's no disaster, but there's still not much point to the remake of Point Break...
Kathryn Bigelow's Point Break was fairly successful when it hit cinemas back in 1991, pitting Keanu Reeves' rookie FBI agent against Patrick Swayze's impossibly cool surfing bank robber in a film that landed with audiences but was largely dismissed by critics.
Its uniquely sensitive spin on macho action movies has led to its reappraisal as a cult classic, thus making this remake pretty much inevitable. Few of us would have predicted that director/cinematographer Ericson Core would convert it into an extreme sports movie, but that's one of the only surprises to be had here.
After a tragic accident, former poly-athlete Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey) leaves the adrenaline junkie scene behind and applies to join the FBI. He's still on probation when he discovers that a daring gang of bank...

There has already been much scrutiny over the need for Ericson Core to remake pioneering action thriller Point Break, released in 1991 and starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. Director Ericson Core talks us through how he want about shooting his remake of Point Break...
As a cinematographer, Ericson Core filmed movies like The Fast and the Furious, Payback, and Daredevil. When he became a director on the true sports story Invincible, Core remained his own director of photography. So for his second film, Point Break, he was still the Dp. Point Break filmed in 11 different countries with athletes performing extreme stunts in the most extreme locations. Luke Bracy plays Johnny Utah, an FBI agent going undercover to root out an eco-terrorist. Bodhi (Edgar Ramirez) is still the leader of a group of athletes, but with more on their mind than robbing banks.
Here's how our chat with him about the film went....
Thank you for filming everything clearly so we could see all the stunts. As a Dp yourself, what are your thoughts on the...

Point Break makes no sense. It doesn’t seem to be trying very hard to make sense, either. A remake of the improbably fun 1991 crime thriller of the same name, 2015’s version only serves to inject excess adrenaline into this updated version of an already flimsy conceit.
After his future in the world of extreme sports takes a cliff dive, Johnny “Utah” Brigham completes a Ged, undergraduate, and law degree before entering the FBI’s training academy. His experience becomes an essential tool when a gang of skydiving thrill-seekers steals a pallet-load of stacked cash from a cargo plane, only to cut the ties and rain money on the poor villagers below. It somehow takes the expressionless lunk Utah to consider that fellow extreme athletes are behind these Robin Hood heists.

Topping the bromance between Patrick Swayze's Bodhi and Keanu Reeves' Johnny Utah in Point Black was going to be a daunting task in re-imagining the 1991 action flick for 2015. Edgar Ramirez and Luke Bracey, however, have a great chemistry in an updated version of Point Break. The two stars tell CineMovie it was an instant chemistry when they first met along with director Ericson Core (Invisible). There were no ice breaking activities needed, according to the Point Break actors. Listen to the interview.

There are about a million reasons why remaking Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 FBI-agent-goes-undercover-as-a-surfer classic is a bad idea, but let’s focus on the most obvious one. If the original Point Break itself is any good, it’s thanks to Bigelow’s vigorous direction and the breathless, almost romantic chemistry between Keanu Reeves’s hot-headed young FBI agent Johnny Utah and Patrick Swayze’s Zen bank-robber/beach bum/surf-god Bodhi. The film is a stupid idea made sublime. Take Bigelow/Keanu/Swayze out of the equation, and you’re just left with the stupid idea. That said, variations on Point Break do litter the cinematic landscape. And occasionally, they work. That, after all, is how the Fast and the Furious series started, with Paul Walker as the aspiring agent taken in by Vin Diesel’s muscle-car outlaw tribe.Enter Point Break 2015. The new film’s director, Ericson Core, was the cinematographer...

Warner Bros. Pictures delivered their new action/thriller movie, "Point Break," into theaters today, December 25th, 2015, and the reviews are in from just a few of the major, top movie critics. They ended up with a pretty mixed score of 45 out of a possible 100 across just 4 reviews at the Metacritic.com site. The film stars: Clemens Schick, Édgar Ramírez, Luke Bracey, Matias Padin, Ray Winstone and Teresa Palmer. We've added comments from a couple of the critics, below. Tom Russo from the Boston Globe, gave it a less than stellar 63 score, stating: "For all the adrenalizing positives in this reworked Point Break, inadvertent silliness remains." Elizabeth Kerr over at The Hollywood Reporter, gave it a 50 score. She said: "Ericson Core’s Point Break strips the silly fun and relatively straight-ahead narrative from the original for a humorless, if photogenic spin on extreme crime." James Marsh over at Screen International, gave it a 40 grade,...

We’ve officially come full circle. Point Break arrived in 1991 with more cheese than a Green Bay Packers game and ten years later a fresh generation got to enjoy an ambiguous cops and robbers romp that moved the same basic plot from ocean to streets with The Fast and the Furious. It’s probably an obscure connection at best, but the cinematographer of that unofficial remake, Ericson Core, just happens to now be the man to bring a brand new version of the original story to life as his sophomore directorial effort. This time the names are mostly the same—screenwriter Kurt Wimmer realized “Utah” works better as a nickname than given surname—and the waves make a return too even if they aren’t quite as important.
I know this is sacrilege to say, but Kathryn Bigelow’s cult classic dripping in nostalgic testosterone is the perfect property for a big-budget remake.

One issue still plaguing the film industry remains the need for studios to remake classic properties. Movies with some form of brand recognition get repackaged for a new generation – often with modified bells and whistles meant to attract a different crowd. So it’s not enough to remake Point Break using extreme sports as the backdrop. It also has to be released in 3D. This isn’t a review of the new Point Break. This is a breakdown of the use of 3D in Ericson Core’s new crime thriller. We’ll go over key categories that are essential to your 3D enjoyment, to make sure that you pay for the right ticket if and when you choose to see Point Break. The Big One. What is the symbolic “big one” in a film that features motocross, rock climbing, base jumping, wing suiting, boating, skydiving, snowboarding, skateboarding, remote hiking and, of course, surfing as the medium for an illegal geo-political agenda? In the original 1991 Kathryn Bigelow-directed “Point Break” — starring Keanu Reeves as Johnny Utah and Patrick Swayze as Bodhi — chaos is what financed the athletic pursuits of Bodhi and his gang, that lurking nihilistic thrill of hunting for The Big One whilst jumping from planes and paddling toward 20- and 30-foot waves. This Christmas, for the new “re-imagining” of “Point Break,” practicing extreme sports in rare, beautiful Earthly destinations are allegorical acts of natural one-ness to a cell of eco-terrorists who devise high-end corporate heists. There’s a Bodhi — played by Edgar Ramirez — who is Zen Master to this band, to what was repeatedly referred to as his “wolf pack.” On...

It's award season, so we're getting a surfeit of dramas and star-director projects, but mostly every studio is doubling down on making moviegoing an event experience. That means Big. Huge spectacles, more luxurious theaters, more IMAX screens, better 3D, faster frame rates, better sound via immersive 3D Dolby Atmos (which is now installed on more than 1000 screens) and Dolby Vision and AMC's state-of-the-art Dolby Cinemas. The "Point Break" remake has little to do with the original. Rather it advances the notion of Xtreme sports on film. Directed by "Fast and Furious" cinematographer Ericson Core the actioner stars Aussie Luke Gracey as an extreme athlete and deploys the world's best athletes in the pursuit not just of giant waves (Laird Hamilton is back as an advisor) but winter sports and heart-stopping web-flying in formation through narrow canyons in the Swiss alps. I don't know how good the movie is, but the...

Jason Statham is one of the more consistent and prolific action stars working in Hollywood today, with many entries in the genre under his belt. As such, it makes sense that he's now been cast to play the lead in a Hong Kong action movie, written by Kurt Wimmer, which is as yet untitled.
Hong Kong action movies tend to be quite stunt-intensive, with a general inclination to do things practically (though to a lesser extent in recent years). Jason Statham is a very logical choice for this kind of filmmaking, since he has Mixed Martial Arts training, and a lot of action experience, preferring to do as many stunts as possible himself. Obviously, some are going to be too difficult or too dangerous for the star to do them all himself, so he's worked with numerous stuntmen over his career, who he has tremendous respect for.

China has approved a new December 3rd release date for the upcoming remake of "Point Break" - a full three weeks before it opens in the United States. The move is thought to be due to the film having the backing of Chinese investor Dmg Entertainment.

When it came to capturing real-life extreme sports, the upcoming Point Break remake really pushed things to the limit. Thanks to the assistance of some tremendously talented athletes, the movie features all kinds of daring and terrifying stunts . from riding giant waves to motocrossing along a mountain ridge. Perhaps the most breathtaking in the film, however, is a wingsuit sequence filmed in Walenstadt, Switzerland. and what you probably don.t know is that it was a hugely risky thing to shoot. Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a special Point Break presentation in Los Angeles, and in addition to seeing extended footage from the film, there was also a panel discussion with star Edgar Ramirez, director Ericson Core, and base jumping advisor Jeb Corliss. During the event, the men went deep into detail about the making of the movie, and spent a considerable amount of time discussing the...
