The death of George Cooper Sr. (Lance Barber) was set in stone as soon as "Young Sheldon" aired its first episode. Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) had revealed that he'd been forced to deal with his old man passing away during his teenage years on "The Big Bang Theory," so the prequel series was always going to chronicle the heartbreaking event. Sure, "Young Sheldon" flat-out changes some plot points from "The Big Bang Theory," but George's death was unavoidable, and it's a tear-jerking viewing experience.
Of course, the creators of "The Big Bang Theory" probably weren't thinking about making "Young Sheldon" when they decided to seal George's fate. Fortunately, Steven Molaro and Steve Holland had no regrets about their decision when they returned for the prequel, as they explained in a 2024 interview with Glamour. To quote Holland on the matter:

Sometimes a TV show starts to change throughout its run, morphing into something new as the writers and producers get a handle on what works best for the characters and story. The most obvious and common changes are often to a show's tone, as initial ideas are either softened or sharpened and things get more complex. Just look at the brilliant political satire "Veep," which starts as a vulgar dark comedy but eventually becomes depressingly real in its satire, with a final season that's pretty much pitch-black. The hit CBS comedy "Young Sheldon" had a little bit lighter of a transformation, but it was no less dramatic. Already wildly different from its predecessor, "The Big Bang Theory," by simple means of using a single-camera format with no studio audience, "Young Sheldon" transformed even further throughout its seven-season run to become a heartfelt family dramedy.

"The Big Bang Theory" lasted for 12 successful seasons, and during that time, the sitcom brought in several characters from Sheldon Cooper's (Jim Parsons) life. His mom, brother, and sister all show up for on-screen roles, and his deceased father gets a mention. That said, not everyone who impacted Sheldon gets acknowledged in the nerdy sitcom. Paige Swanson (McKenna Grace) from "Young Sheldon" doesn't appear on "Big Bang Theory," even though she was a notable part of his coming-of-age years, while Dr. John Sturgis (Wallace Shawn) is also ignored in spite of having dated Sheldon's Meemaw (Annie Potts) and mentored him.
Case in point: Sheldon's Nobel Prize speech in the "Big Bang Theory" finale made the cast cry, proving that it's an emotional moment. The scene sees the socially awkward physicist thank most of the important people in his life for supporting him throughout the years, marking a rare expression of gratitude from the character.

There are some pretty big differences between "The Big Bang Theory" and its prequel spin-off series, "Young Sheldon." For one, "Young Sheldon" is a single-camera series whereas "Big Bang" was multi-cam to allow for a studio audience, which was a pretty massive change-up for the show's creators. Not only that but "Young Sheldon" is completely different tonally, starting as a pretty standard family comedy before becoming more of a dramedy, giving all new context to "The Big Bang Theory." Instead of just cracking jokes or making references to the later events of Sheldon's life, the series actually expanded upon some of the ideas from "The Big Bang Theory" and made Sheldon Cooper a richer, more complex character. And because "The Big Bang Theory" was written without ever planning on making a prequel series, sometimes that meant they had to retcon a few things in order to make it all make a little more sense.

Months after it ended, CBS offers a sneak peek at what Young Sheldon season 8 would have become if it continued. It's no secret that Young Sheldon's cancelation wasn't rooted in the lack of interest from the public. Aside from maintaining its spot as TV's number 1 comedy, it also posted show-high ratings during its final year. Normally, that would have been enough motivation for a renewal, but because of its The Big Bang Theory ties, CBS had no choice but to pull the plug on Young Sheldon, as Chuck Lorre and his producers opted to honor the established canon.
There were primarily two reasons from the continuity on why Young Sheldon ended when it did. Two of the biggest Cooper family incidents took place in 1994, which was when the show ended, per The Big Bang Theory. Firstly, the death of George Cooper, and secondly, Sheldon's move to California to begin his post-graduate studies at Caltech.

Created by Chuck Lorre, both The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon showcased the complexities of life through a humorous lens, while also incorporating heartwarming storylines. While the original series remains best on its own, the spin-off starring Iain Armitage deals with death scenes with remarkable sensitivity.

After his death, George Cooper Sr. actor Lance Barber has a secret Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage involvement, and that makes Young Sheldon's finale much sadder. Despite its popularity, CBS had to cancel Young Sheldon after Chuck Lorre and his writers decided that it needed to stick to The Big Bang Theory's established canon. This was despite the show creating plot inconsistencies throughout its seven-year run. Still, the network and the creatives found a way to take advantage of the prequel's popularity by continuing the Coopers family's story in Texas via Montana Jordan and Emily Osment's new show.
While Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage is technically a continuation of Young Sheldon, picking up just a couple of months since Sheldon's move to California, expect big differences between the shows. For starters, it is a multi-cam sitcom, which means that it is filmed before a live-studio audience. Secondly, the storytelling...

The Big Bang Theory fans always knew to expect the death of George Cooper (Lance Barber) in Young Sheldon, as this was established in the original series. However, when it finally happened, the moment still took some viewers off-guard.
In the penultimate episode of the series, George leaves the house for the final time, unbeknownst to anyone in the family. His daughter, Missy (Raegan Revord), turns down a ride to school that's offered, while Sheldon (Iain Armitage) doesn't acknowledge his father leaving at all. George's wife, Mary (Zoe Perry) urges him not to be late at the end of the day. Nobody says goodbye to the Cooper family patriarch when he walks out the door, and they learn later in the day of his passing after a heart attack. As executive producer Steve Holland shared in a new interview with Variety, it was intentional for none of the family members...

The following contains spoilers for Young Sheldon Season 7, Episode 12, "A New Home and a Traditional Texas Torture," which aired Thursday, May 9 on CBS.
The death of George Cooper has always been inevitable on Young Sheldon. Sheldon Cooper speaks about the tragedy on The Big Bang Theory and how the lack of a fatherly presence greatly affected his adult life. Unlike the retcon of George's affair, his death was around the corner.
Throughout Young Sheldon, there were near heart-stopping teases of George's future demise. He had a heart attack in the third episode of the series and another one in Season 5. All in all, George was quite lucky since those two scares convinced him to turn his life around and focus more on his marriage and family. Unfortunately, staying faithful to his wife and offering sound life advice to his children wasn't enough to save him from his last heart attack.

Chuck Lorre had two jobs when creating Young Sheldon. One was to make a funny show, and two, undo all the damage made to George Cooper throughout The Big Bang Theory's run. George was dead when The Big Bang Theory started, but Sheldon and his mother revisited him occasionally. More times than not, they had negative things to say about him, making him seem like the worst husband and father. When he was cast, Lance Barber was aware of the prevailing perception of George. In an interview with TV Line, Barber revealed that there were active efforts to change the character and make him more human instead of the butt of the joke. He and everyone in production overhauled the character to create a new person whom people could identify and sympathize with.

Gary Cooper movies on TCM: Cooper at his best and at his weakest Gary Cooper is Turner Classic Movies' “Summer Under the Stars” star today, Aug. 30, '15. Unfortunately, TCM isn't showing any Cooper movie premiere – despite the fact that most of his Paramount movies of the '20s and '30s remain unavailable. This evening's features are Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), Sergeant York (1941), and Love in the Afternoon (1957). Mr. Deeds Goes to Town solidified Gary Cooper's stardom and helped to make Jean Arthur Columbia's top female star. The film is a tad overlong and, like every Frank Capra movie, it's also highly sentimental. What saves it from the Hell of Good Intentions is the acting of the two leads – Cooper and Arthur are both excellent – and of several supporting players. Directed by Howard Hawks, the jingoistic, pro-war Sergeant York was a huge box office hit, eventually earning Academy Award nominations in several categories,...
