"Save us Father! There's evil down here." This looks creepy. 101 Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie supernatural horror film called The Gates, made by the filmmaker Stephen Hall. The title must be a reference to the "Gates of Hell", not just the prison itself. Or perhaps somewhere else more sinister... Set in Victorian London, a chilling thriller at a prison. A serial killer has been sentenced to death by electric chair in the 1890s, but in his final hours, he puts a curse on the prison he is in, and all of those in it. The film stars Michael Yare and Richard Brake, along with John Rhys-Davies & Elena Delia as two post mortem photographers, turned paranormal investigators; plus David Pearse & Peter Coonan. This looks much better than expected, with a scary story to boot. And the intense end of the trailer hints at a big showdown.

Peter Sutcliffe, a British serial killer known as the Yorkshire Ripper, has died after contracting Covid-19 at the age of 74, according to CNN.
He had been suffering from underlying health conditions before testing positive for Covid-19, and prison officials could not confirm whether that was the cause of death.
“Hmp (Her Majesty’s Prison) Frankland prisoner Peter Coonan (born Sutcliffe) died in hospital on 13 November. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed,” a prison spokesperson told CNN.
Sutcliffe was convicted in 1981 for murdering 13 women and attempting to murder seven more in Northern England between 1975 and 1980. He confessed to authorities in 1981 but then contested the charges in court — during his trial, he claimed he was on a mission from God to kill prostitutes. He was sentenced to 20 life terms.
His first murder was in October 1975, when he murdered a 28-year-old mother of four and sex worker named Wilma McCann. Over the next five years,...

John Simm plays a rabble-rousing populist politician in “Cold Courage,” and Lionsgate has stepped up and taken international rights to the series.
Based on the series of novels by Pekka Hiltunen, the drama is billed as the biggest yet out of Finland and will bow on the Viaplay streaming service in Scandinavia. With a cast from all over Europe and a shoot spanning Belgium, Finland, Ireland, and the U.K., “Cold Courage” is international in scope and ambition.
That was part of the appeal for Simm, a familiar face on British TV, playing The Master in “Doctor Who” and starring in a host of other shows for British networks. “There was a point I was on BBC and ITV at the same time and that was a bit much,” he told Variety. “I thought it would be nice to step away from that for a little bit and do something I haven’t done,...

L.A.-based indie distributor Cinema Epoch has acquired U.S. rights to “Penance,” the English- and Irish-language movie about a priest confronting his past as a firebrand preacher who promoted violence against British rule in Northern Ireland.

Starline Entertainment will handle worldwide sales on “Penance,” the new movie from lauded Irish filmmaker Tom Collins.
“Penance” alternates between Ireland during the 1916 Easter Rising against British rule and the city of Derry/Londonderry in Northern Ireland in the 1960s, during what became grimly known as “the Troubles.” A Catholic priest is forced to confront his past as a firebrand preacher promoting violence against British rule in Ireland when a former protege who fell under his influence reappears 50 years later as a hardened Ira gunman.
Shot in English and Gaelic, the film stars Peter Coonan (“Love/Hate”), Barry Barnes (“71”), and Gerard McSorley (“Omagh”).
“In these times of loudly debating nationalism, borders and Brexit, I hope this film, through the central character’s story, underlines that we are always a few heartbeats away from violence and we can live to regret ill-judged rhetoric,” Collins said.
Collins is acknowledged as Ireland’s leading director of Irish-language content.

Writer-Director Brendan Grant’s Get Up and Go, pairing Love/Hate alumni Peter Coonan and Killian Scott is an enjoyable if sometimes uneven, home-grown comedy drama. The story follows one day in the lives of frustrated musician Alex (Coonan), who has long dreamt of a move to London and his friend Coilin (Killian Scott) a dreamer hoping to break into the stand-up comedy circuit in Dublin. When his girlfriend Sinead (Sarah McCall) tells him she’s pregnant Alex panics and fast-tracks his London plans, hoping to borrow the fare from Coilin, but Coilin has problems of his own. He’s just lost his job and he’s become obsessed with Lola (Gemma-Leah Devereux) a girl who barely registers his existence. It’s a wry and often funny look at how we deal with life’s ups and downs. While Alex lets his head rule, Coilin lets his heart, and Grant...

Reuniting Love/Hate's Peter Coonan and Killian Scott, Brendan Grant's Get Up & Go follows two friends Alexander (Coonan) and Colin (Scott) nearing the end of their twenties frustrated with their lives as they watch all their hopes and dreams get further and further away from their grasp. Over the course of an action packed 24 hours, they attempt to get their live back on track, battling all that life throws at them, including irate girlfriends and dwindling bank balances, along the way. The type of slacker comedy rarely seen from Irish talents, there is a lot to like about the above trailer, especially the great central pairing of Coonan and Scott. It provides a snap shot of a time I think all people have suffered through in some form during their lives, handling it in a slick and very funny way. Get Up & Go hits Irish cinemas May 1st.

New feature film The Guarantee, produced by John Kelleher Media in association with TV3, the Irish Film Board and the Bai is currently shooting in Dublin this week. Directed by Ian Power (The Runway), the feature film recreates the drama surrounding the most significant political decision in modern Irish history when the Irish government decided to guarantee the entire domestic banking system. It’s the first time the story has been told on the big screen and charts the origins of that pivotal decision (four years before that fateful night), and follows developments through the peak of the boom to the beginning of the bust. As much as we’d like it too, it probably won’t feature a bunch of politicians and bankers being fed to a pride of starving lions.
