It has been rightly said that ‘we should enjoy youth while it lasts’. The British comedy Arthur’s Whiskey has been directed by Stephen Cookson. The 2024 film stars well-known faces like Diane Keaton, Hayley Mills, and Lulu. Three elderly women, Joan, Susan, and Linda are transformed into young women after drinking a magic potion made by Arthur, Joan’s late husband. Is their youth momentary? Will they get addicted to shaping up as young women? Will they be able to relive their youth again? There are multiple similar questions that arise in our minds as we slowly unravel the plot of Arthur’s Whiskey film.

In the comedy Arthur’s Whiskey, Diane Keaton finds the secret of eternal youth and shares it with her friends.
The film follows Joan who, after her husband dies, is shocked to discover he had invented an elixir that makes the drinker look young again. Sharing it with her two friends, the three women paint the town red but soon discover that they are no longer equipped to be young in the modern world.
The first-look image sees the film’s stars — Keaton, Patricia Hodge, and Scottish performer Lulu — walking arm-in-arm. Keaton is in a classic Keaton ensemble of a big hat, belt, and turtle neck.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Keaton talked about what inspires her to keep working in Hollywood after her decades-spanning career, saying, “A good part. A great piece of work. It doesn’t always work out well, but sometimes they’re fascinating.

The ongoing Hollywood writers’ strike casts a cloud over what otherwise promises to be a solid Cannes film market. Most buyers and sellers came out of Berlin this year “cautiously optimistic” as the (partial) resurgence of the theatrical market alongside a slowly but steadily growing digital ancillary business offers reason to believe reports of the death of the indie industry — widespread in the wake of the Covid theater shutdowns — have been greatly exaggerated.
“I see the investment by Amazon and Apple TV in the theatrical business as a real positive,” says David Garrett of Mister Smith Entertainment, “because it shows they recognize the real value of the theatrical experience.” Amazon’s success with Ben Affleck’s sports-marketing biopic Air, which grossed upwards of $80 million worldwide in theaters before going out online, bodes well for the upcoming rollout of Apple’s Cannes title Killers of the Flower Moon from Martin Scorsese,...

Two middle-aged couples take a profanity-laden daytrip to the city where they met – but who exactly is this film for?
The subject of this four-hander by the seaside is the changing face of Britishness. But Stephen Cookson’s film, adapted from Steven Berkoff’s 1994 play Brighton Beach Scumbags, is marooned in a weird cultural no man’s land. Maybe its four characters – Dinah and Derek, Dave and Doreen, a brace of ageing teddy boy/girl couples on a potty-mouthed nostalgia trip to the town where they met – qualified as bleeding-edge social satire in the 90s. But in an age of inquisitional identity politics, railing against “Pakis” and “poofters”, they stand out as cancellation candidates. Even for 2005, the year to which the film is updated, it seems archaic. It’s an awkward compromise, but setting it in the present day would have meant a heavy rewrite to make these throwbacks the...

Steven Berkoff is no stranger to the limelight. At 81 the actor, playwright and theatre director shows no sign of slowing down. Currently he is working on a one man, one act play based on the recent #MeToo allegations against disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. But his most recent film, a perilous journey through some of Shakespeare’s most notorious creations, shows that there is much more for the ‘enfant terrible’ still to say.
This confrontational aspect is crucial to the man’s work. Indeed, it has served him well enough to earn him the nick name of one of the ‘bad boys of British theatre’, a moniker which endeared him to Hollywood casting agents in the ’70s and ’80s. On screen he has fought James Bond, John Rambo and Axel Foley, on stage he has brought his brash physicality to many of the great roles, notably his work adapting Shakespeare.

Parkland Pictures CEO John Cairns has teamed with former Arrow Films acquisitions director Tom Stewart to launch new U.K. distribution company Parkland Entertainment, Variety has confirmed. Stewart and Cairns will be joint partners in the new company, with Stewart attending next month’s Toronto Film Festival in his role as acquisitions director of the new company.
Cairns said he immediately saw an opportunity to expand Parkland’s operations when Stewart’s departure from Arrow was announced in June. “I saw the news and contacted him and suggested we got together,” Cairns told Variety. “I made him a partner, so we own the new company together.” Stewart does not hold an ownership stake in Parkland’s sales or production outfits.
The new distribution arm will kick off with three titles already on Parkland’s sales slate, starting with British thriller “Us and Them” (pictured), written and directed by Joe Martin,...

Director Stephen Cookson gives us 80 minutes of confusion, laughter and peculiarity all rolled into one. Stanley, A Man of Variety stars Timothy Spall as Stanley, a middle-aged man locked up in a Victorian era style psychiatric facility who undergoes physical and mental seizures. As he comes into his fifteenth year of his isolation, due to his seizures, he has hallucinations of his heroes; George Formby, Frank Randall, Noel Coward and Max Miler (as well as ten others) just to name a few.
It’s a bizarre film and highly disorientating at times, but the concept is different and something not seen often on screen. Timothy Spall is simply excellent and the way he plays 14 completely different manifestations as well as being Stanley, is first-rate. The oddness of these characters is entertaining, they’re almost twisted and demonic like but each with a very good sense of humour.

In this macabre one-man drama, Spall is marvellous as a psychiatric patient who brings to life a string of showbiz icons
Timothy Spall turns in an accomplished performance in this macabre, airless and weirdly oppressive film; the movie equivalent of a one-man theatre show, the screenplay for which Spall developed with the project’s director, Stephen Cookson.
He plays Stanley, a middle-aged man imprisoned in a nightmarish Victorian-era psychiatric hospital. He is like a cross between Reginald Christie and Philip Larkin without the poems but with a dad worryingly like Larkin’s. Stanley appears to be the only person there, tormented by garbled memories of his family and what he did to get incarcerated, and pitifully obsessed with being granted leave to visit his daughter’s grave.

The actor’s new film – Stanley, A Man of Variety – echoes David Lynch and a dark Ealing classic. Here he tells why he chose to re-create the giants of music hall as ‘English noir’
Timothy Spall has often played characters that stick in the mind – from Barry in the BBC hit series Auf Wiedersehen, Pet to his award-winning performance as the great British painter in Mike Leigh’s 2014 film, Mr Turner. But Spall’s latest film goes several steps further.
In Stanley, A Man of Variety released in cinemas next month, he concocts a blistering string of recreations of several of the great comic variety acts of the past, incuding Max Wall, George Formby and Noël Coward. It is an extraordinary tour de force, but not a comfortable one to watch. Spall and his collaborator on the film, the director and writer Stephen Cookson, have a deeply unsettling argument to...

The actor will star in feature film versions of his shows Shakespeare’s Villains and Tell Tale Heart.
Actor and playwright Steven Berkoff, best known for villainous screen roles in Octopussy and A Clockwork Orange, is set to reprise two of his most successful theatre productions on film.
Shakespeare’s Heroes & Villains and Tell Tale Heart, both written by Berkoff, will be co-produced by Red Rock Entertainment (That Good Night) and Ck Films with Stephen Cookson (My Angel) directing. Both are currently in development.
Shakespeare’s Heroes & Villains will be adapted from the Berkoff-penned stage production Shakespeare’s Villains. The one-man play, which had its first run at London’s Theatre Royal in 1998, explores and analyses some of the Bard’s most villainous characters, including Macbeth, Iago, Richard III and Coriolanus.
