Exclusive: Physician turned #1 Nyt bestselling author Robin Cook is partnering with Euro Gang Entertainment, the entertainment company of Gianni Nunnari and Simon Horsman, on a pair of new projects for film and TV.
The first, Bellevue, will be a feature based on Cook’s forthcoming novel of the same name, which marks a departure for the author as a dark and atmospheric work of horror. Slated for publication in December, the book tells the story of Mitt, a first-year surgical resident at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. Mitt has a long and dark family history: his physicians’ forebears are guilty of grievous sins, extreme instances of medical malpractice committed at the very hospital where he now studies. Set against the gloom of supernatural haunting, and amidst gruesomely accurate surgical imagery, Bellevue is the story of supernatural vengeance for the sins of Mitt’s ancestors.

The Change-Up: Singh Sleepwalks Through Sci-Fi Stock
Time is not on anyone’s side in director Tarsem Singh’s latest blunder through familiar material, Self/less, a mash-up of recycled sci-fi tropes drained of innovation or potential potency. Issues of class, identity, and health insurance get chugged through the blender of David and Alex Pastor’s script, the directing/screenwriting duo’s foray into the English language. Singh, known for expressively beautiful visuals, presents his most demurely dressed feature to date, though his usual ocular trickery may have offered a slight reprieve from the crushing banality of the laughably conservative moral fable proffered here.
Damian (Ben Kingsley) heads his own self-built empire, but finds he’s been diagnosed with cancer and doesn’t have much longer to live. He has a troubled relationship with his daughter, Claire (Michelle Dockery), but finds he’s not quite ready to call it quits.

It’s not the best interpretation of Robin Cook’s novel of the same name, and it likely won’t be the last, but it’s also fair to say that the two-part miniseries Coma, produced by Ridley Scott and the late Tony Scott, is neither the best nor worst of the adaptations. Even though the story shoots itself in the foot by throwing in unnecessary conflicts to keep things “thrilling”, it’s never short on talent like Richard Dreyfuss, Geena Davis, or James Woods to help pad out a weak leading lady in Lauren Ambrose. If you can overlook a few glaring plotholes and oversights, Coma holds itself together just long enough to make it to the ending, but the twist broadcasts itself far sooner than it needs to (unlike many of its predecessors).

The late Tony Scott developed the latest adaptation of Robin Cook's novel "Coma" with his brother Ridley Scott. The four-hour mini-series premiered on A&E on Labor Day with the first of two parts. In it, Lauren Ambrose plays Susan Wheeler, a medical student who starts to uncover some shocking information at the hospital.
It starts when she notices patients who are otherwise healthy slipping into unexplained comas. All of them are being transferred to the Jefferson Institute. But the further she dug, the more the people around her started to suffer. Were it not for the timely intervention of the Chief of Suregery, played by James Woods, Susan would have likely been shut down next.
Instead, he got her into a tour group to the Jefferson Institute, where she promptly broke from the group and started to uncover what was really going on. Disturbing things like coma patients...

Coma is a two-part miniseries that starts tonight on A&E and we’ve had a chance to check it out ahead of its premiere this evening. Continue reading for impressions, a photo gallery, and a trailer:
Directed by Mikael Salomon, and produced by Ridley and Tony Scott, Coma is based on the Robin Cook novel and 1978 Michael Crichton movie. The story centers on Susan Wheeler (Lauren Ambrose), a medical student who discovers that patients are being put into a coma and killed for medical experiments.
As I’ve mentioned before, TV miniseries are starting to become obsolete. In the past, they were big events because they had a larger budget and better actors than you’d traditionally see on TV. Things have changed over the past 10-15 years and the quality of TV is higher than ever. When that is the case, it really takes something special to stand out as a TV minseries.

Usually a fish-out-of-water set-up spells comedy, but that couldn’t be further from the truth for the new miniseries Coma, which airs tonight and tomorrow on A&E. Based on Robin Cook’s 1977 medical thriller of the same name (which was adapted into a 1978 film starring Geneviève Bujold and Michael Douglas), Coma sees med student Susan Wheeler (Lauren Ambrose) relocate from New York to the South. Despite the reputation that everyone’s friendlier down South, Wheeler notices an alarmingly high coma rate in her new hospital and begins to suspect her colleagues might be involved.

Chicago – When I heard that A&E was airing a remake of Michael Crichton’s wonderful slice of ’70s health care paranoia “Coma” (based on the book by Robin Cook), I thought, “That makes perfect sense.” With our current national focus on what’s going to happen to us when we get sick along with the continued health issues of the aging Baby Boomer generation, a “Coma” remake was a great idea. There are plenty of reasons to do another “Coma.” It’s just too bad that the producers of this turgid mess never stumbled upon any of them.

"Please don't take me to Memorial," gasps a bloodied patient in Coma, right after sinister orderlies load him into the back of an ambulance. They don't listen. This is horror, and in horror, what you fear most is what happens to you. This A&E miniseries is exuberantly batty. Loosely based on Robin Cook's 1977 novel and the Michael Crichton film that followed (and produced by director Ridley Scott and his late brother Tony), it's about an intern named Susan Wheeler (Lauren Ambrose) and a surgical resident named Mark Burroughs (Steven Pasquale) who think it’s weird that so many Peachtree Memorial patients end in comas and decide to poke around. Each new scrap of data ramps up their paranoia. Why did that doctor hang himself after one of his patients went comatose? Who paid off that malpractice plaintiff with nearly half a million dollars? Is the ebullient Professor Hillside...

On Labor Day, A&E premieres Coma, its four-hour, two-night medical thriller starring Six Feet Under’s Lauren Ambrose as a medical student who suspects there’s a reason why patients at her hospital are falling into a coma during routine surgeries. Based on the best-selling 1977 novel by Robin Cook (which Michael Crichton adapted into a 1978 film), the miniseries was penned by Black Swan’s John J. McLaughlin and costars Ellen Burstyn, James Woods, Geena Davis, Richard Dreyfuss, and Rescue Me’s Steven Pasquale.

When strange boxes arrive from networks or studios, I know something strange is afoot. This morning, a delivery arrived from A&E.
Knowing they had the two-part TV movie Coma airing soon, I figured it was a promotion for that title.
Based on the novel by Robin Cook, adapted once before by Michael Crichton and brought back to the screen with the help of producers Ridley and Tony Scott, Coma stars Lauren Ambrose as Dr. Susan Wheeler in this thriller about a medical student who discovers that something sinister is going on in her hospital after routine procedures send more than a few seemingly healthy patients into comas on the operating table. Richard Dreyfuss, Ellen Burstyn, James Woods, Geena Davis and Steven Pasquale co-star.
The box we received alerted us that there were perishable items inside. What it creatively contained was a bag for organ delivery, alas, there were no...

The marketing campaign for A&E's mini-series Coma has gone viral with billboards and such in NYC and La along with a website called Coma Conspiracy. Read on for the details of how you can seek the truth and help uncover the conspiracy.
Part of the plan was to give the series a new iconic image with the "Coma Girl" having an updated look from the 1978 movie. Stuntwoman and commercial model Robin Lee Maggy, who does stunts on the show, was hired as the model for all promotional stills and video.

Reel TV is a column at Movies.com that takes an ongoing look at the growing intersection of movies and television. If there's a big screen talent making the move to small screen, even temporarily, we want to tell you about it. Ever have that strange moment when you learn of or see something for the first time and then it starts popping up everywhere? That's happening this week with Coma. Despite being a huge fan of Michael Crichton as an author, and of most of the films based off his work (curse you, Timeline!), I'd never seen or even heard much about his 1978 film Coma, which he wrote and directed based on a novel by Robin Cook? about a doctor investigating a suspiciously high number of coma patients at her hospital. For whatever reason when it came to talking...

Coma (1978) Although he’s known primarily as the writer of cutting edge novels like the “Jurassic Park” series, “Congo”, and “The Terminal Man” (among many, many other titles), Michael Crichton was also a director, with his most high-profile decade coming in the ’80s on films like “Looker”, “Runaway” and “Physical Evidence”. One of his earlier films was 1978′s hospital thriller “Coma”, which, ironically enough, is an adaptation of a novel not written by him, but instead an adaptation of a Robin Cook book. The hero of “Coma” is actress Genevieve Bujold, who plays a spunky young MD name Susan Wheeler at a Boston area hospital who discovers that sinister shenanigans are taking place right under her nose. Unfortunately for her, the conspiracy goes right to the very top, which makes her investigation into the situation problematic, not to mention dangerous to her health. Michael Douglas plays Bujold’s boyfriend, a fellow doctor and friendly ear,...

Well we're on a roll here for remake Friday it seems. Don't even get me started again on the potential 'American Psycho' redo, instead let's concentrate on another 'whats-the-point' makeover of sorts for the Michael Crichton helmed 'Coma'. The 1978 sci-fi conspiracy thriller movie, which Crichton penned based on the original novel by Robin Cook, starred Michael Douglas and Genevieve Bujold and is set for a bit of a TV makeover as a two-night, four-hour miniseries for AandE. The one good thing about the show is that filmmaker siblings Tony Scott and Ridley Scott will be exec producing so it'll definitely have some cache. But then with a cast featuring the likes of Lauren Ambrose ('Six Feet Under'), Steven Pasquale ('Rescue Me'), Richard Dreyfuss ('Jaws'), Ellen Burstyn ('Requiem For A Dream'), Geena Davis and James Woods ('Videodrome'...

Steven Pasquale and Lauren Ambrose are set to lead Tony and Ridley Scott's "Coma" miniseries for A&E says The Live Feed.
Based on the medical thriller novel by Robin Cook, the story follows a doctor who begins to suspect that something is amiss when healthy patients begin to fall into comas. Richard Dreyfuss, Ellen Burstyn, James Woods, Geena Davis, James Rebhorn, Joe Morton and Joseph Mazello also star.
Author Michael Crichton previously directed a 1978 film adaptation which starred Michael Douglas and Geneviève Bujold. This marks the second time the Scotts and A&E have remade a classic Crichton work, the first being the generally panned 2008 miniseries adaptation of his early novel "The Andromeda Strain".
Shooting will kick off shortly in Atlanta with the two-night, four-hour miniseries set to air Memorial Day 2012.

Stem cells from embryos may finally cure patients-reviving a bitter debate. In this week's Newsweek, Sharon Begley reports from the front lines of the ethical battle.
Stem cells, it seems, have become almost as ubiquitous in medicine as stethoscopes. Yankees pitcher Bartolo Colon received injections of stem cells from his own fat and bone marrow to treat an injured shoulder and elbow, his doctor recently revealed. Meanwhile, a Texas hospital is testing whether stem cells from a patient's bone marrow will improve the effectiveness of cardiac bypass surgery. It's enough to suggest that the bitter religious, ethical, and political battles over stem cells that began in 1998 were pointless. If cells harvested from patients themselves can treat disease, perhaps there's no need to use ones obtained from human embryos-with all the questions that raises.

When Edgar Bronfman Jr gained ownership of Universal Studios he got into some odd marketing campaign practices. One of which is this rare, employee orientation video, that enlightened people about how things were going to change under new management.
Created in 1995 by Matt Stone and Trey Parker and commissioned by comedic filmmaker David Zucker, Your Studio and You was to be played at a party Seagram threw for its employees acquired as a result of its Universal Studios take-over. Book publishers were among the first groups of industry professionals using web series to market their products. Way back in 2008, Michael Eisner's new media studio, Vuguru launched Foreign Body to promote Robin Cook's organ trafficking thriller novel of the same name. In the same year, members of Hollywood royalty and Macmillan Publishing released a four-part sparkly, self-indulgent program directed by McG showing off the glitz of the movie biz in preparation for the release of Celebutantes.
