Good morning, Baltimore!
In 1988, director John Waters debuted his wacky, irreverent quasi-musical “Hairspray” in theaters. The story of Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake), a young Baltimore teen desperate to become a star on the Corny Collins show, went on to gross over $8 million at the box office that year on a $2.7 million budget, garnering six Independent Spirit Award nominations and the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. It also marked the mainstream explosion of Waters, whose campy spirit connected with audiences at large as “Hairspray” has since become a bona fide fan favorite, with a long-running Broadway show that was also adapted into a true movie musical in 2007.
Waters, who has gone on to make other cult classics including “Serial Mom” and “Polyestor,” attributes the film’s success to not talking down to its audience, no matter how misguided they might be. “It’s a political movie without anyone preaching,...

Does James Marsden's agent have something against him? For the majority of his career, Marsden has played characters that are the equivalent of tapioca pudding. He was the nice guy who Rachel McAdams dumps for Ryan Gosling in "The Notebook." Then he was the nice guy Lois Lane hooked up with while Superman was away in "Superman Returns." More recently, he's played Sonic's adopted dad in the "Sonic the Hedgehog" films, a fellow whose personality consists solely of being nice and panicking whenever Sonic gets into trouble. Heck, Marsden's android character in the titular park on "Westworld," Teddy, literally has no identity outside of being the nice guy boyfriend for Evan Rachel Wood's Dolores. He's essentially the Ken to her Barbie (and that's Tedough).
The trouble arguably started with Marsden's breakout turn as Scott Summers/Cyclops in "X-Men." Despite being a prominent member of Professor Xavier's superhero team in Marvel's comic books,...

John Waters, the Pope of Trash, made his most mainstream and family-friendly movie with 1988's "Hairspray" — but did so without diluting his outsider essence.
You don't get to be known as the Pope of Trash without seriously proving yourself over the decades. Having started with creatively titled short films like "Hag in a Leather Jacket" in the '60s, director John Waters slowly established himself as a thoroughly unique director of proud, all-American filth. He dominated the '70s midnight movie circuit thanks to attention-grabbing exploits like "Multiple Maniacs," "Female Trouble," and the infamous "Pink Flamingos." No director seemed less likely to penetrate the mainstream than Waters, a man whose works included singing anuses, feces eating, rape via giant lobster, and penis removal. Yet it happened in 1988 when Waters made "Hairspray."
The unthinkable occurred when Waters directed a film with big stars, a family-friendly rating, and a solid box office return,...

James Marsden owes Julia Roberts a special thank you. During his virtual visit to The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Thursday, the Dead To Me star revealed that the Pretty Woman star helped him land his role of Corny Collins in the 2007 remake of Hairspray, telling host Ellen DeGeneres that Roberts put in a good word for him. "That role came about—I was sitting down with Adam Shankman, the director, and [producers] Craig Zadan and Neil Meron at the time in an empty restaurant off-Broadway in New York City and we were just talking about, you know, the potential of me playing Corny Collins," he began. "And in the middle of the interview—it was an interview because I was trying to get the...

I've always wondered what it would be like to spend an entire day with someone like Derek Hough, the actor, choreographer and singer who became famous for his time as a professional dancer on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars. I’ve interviewed him countless times on red carpets or inside industry events, but I never expected a day in the park with him to be so intimate or inspiring.
I recently joined the performer on a visit to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in Porter, Indiana, along the southern shore of Lake Michigan. Hough was there in celebration of the National Park Foundation's "Find Your Park" initiative, a campaign to promote the lesser known parks across the country. This week, Scream Factory is releasing a fantastic Collector’s Edition Blu-ray for John Waters’ subversive domestic comedy, Serial Mom, which follows a well-meaning mother (Kathleen Turner) who embarks on a murderous rampage after she finds out that certain folks are out to harm certain members of her loving family. In Serial Mom, frequent Waters collaborator Mink Stole stars as Dottie Hinkle, the bane of Turner’s character’s existent and tormented victim of her malicious sense of humor.
To celebrate the brand new Blu from Scream Factory, Daily Dead had the pleasure of speaking with Stole about her career, from starting out with Waters during the 1960s through her experiences on a variety of his other cinematic projects, including Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, and, of course, Serial Mom. Stole also reflected about her time on the set of Waters’ 1994 dark comedy, working with Turner and more.

Skeptics of musical theater like to ask, 'But how do they know the song' when characters join in during a musical number. One of the virtues of Hairspray is that the audience itself actually does this the songs are so catchy that we start singing along. This is appropriate, given the show's message of inclusivity and empowerment of the ordinary. Marc Shaiman music and lyrics and Scott Wittman lyrics are responsible for the irresistible score of this show, set in Baltimore in the 1960s, that follows plucky, overweight teenager Tracy Turnblad's quest to integrate the 'Corny Collins Show,' an American Bandstand-style teen dance party that she adores. Along the way, she falls in love with one of its stars, locks horns with another, makes new friends who are black and have a different perspective and a different way of dancing, and finds a place for herself on the show and in life.

Network TV's recent spate of live musicals have been many things, from buoyant and distracting to plodding and super awkward. But rarely have they been socially relevant – and then came Hairspray Live! The movie-turned-stage musical-turned-movie musical (got all that?) has now become a television extravaganza under the auspices of NBC's live song-and-dance format, and its message of inclusivity, equality and the fight for civil rights has taken on a freshly urgent tone in our current cultural moment.
