Update: The debt ceiling deal narrowly passed the House Rules Committee on Tuesday, clearing a hurdle that threaten to stall the bill before it reached the floor.
Rep. Ralph Norman (R-Sc) and Rep. Chip Roy (R-tx) joined with the committee’s four Democrats in voting against advancing the bill. But seven Republicans voted for it.
Rep. Tom Cole (R-Ok), the Rules Committee chairman, reminded his colleagues that even though the bill left members with misgivings, “that is to be expected in divided government.”
Rep. Jim McGovern (D-ma), the ranking member, said that the bill goes after “vulnerable people,” possible only because the GOP was “weaponizing the debt ceiling” in ways that “will haunt us.”
Stock indexes were mixed, with the S&P 500 up slightly, along with Nasdaq. The Dow was off slightly, finishing down 0.15% to close at 33,042.78. The Rules Committee meeting was still ongoing at the close of trading.

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt vetoed funding last month for the state’s public television network, a decision he says was triggered in part by content he has deemed “indoctrination” of children.
Calling the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority an “outdated system,” Stitt said in an interview with Fox News Digital, “The big question is why are we spending taxpayer dollars to prop up or compete with the private sector and run television stations? And then when you go through all of the programing that’s happening, the indoctrination, the over-sexualization of our children, it’s just really problematic, and it doesn’t line up with Oklahoma values.”
An Oeta spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment.
But Stitt’s move signals a potential new chapter in the culture wars, which has seen conservative communities restrict books from school and public libraries over content they have deemed inappropriate for children.

The Hollywood Interview is sad to report the untimely death of rapper/actor Heavy D at age 44. I interviewed Heavy D for Venice Magazine, back in June of 2005, as he was making his theatrical debut in Hollywood, in the play "Medal of Honor Rag." He was a soft-spoken, thoughtful man whose imposing physical presence couldn't hide what seemed like an inherently gentle nature. Of the hundreds of hours of interviews I've logged over the years, ours was one of the most memorable. He will be missed. Rest in peace.

It’s fair to say that Heavy D was one of the first rap/hip-hop artists whose work crossed over into the “mainstream,” earning him points with urban fans as well as those in the suburbs. While many people were left with a bad taste from what they...

American stage and screenwriter Tom Cole has lost his battle with cancer at the age of 75.
Cole died on 23 February at his home in Roxbury, Connecticut after suffering from multiple myeloma, a cancer of the blood, his wife, Joyce Chopra, has confirmed.
Best known for his film and stage writing, it was Cole's 1985 film Smooth Talk that helped launch Academy Award-nominated actress Laura Dern to fame after it became a surprise hit at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film was directed by Chopra, who also produced the television version of Cole's hit play Medal of Honor Rag. Cole's title character in the play was performed Off Broadway by Howard E. Rollins Jr. in 1976, and by rapper Heavy D in a Los Angeles-staged version produced by Will Smith in 2005.
Cole's other stage works include Fighting Bob and About Time, which became a signature performance piece for James Whitmore after he appeared in the original New York production in 1990.
The writer, who earned a master’s degree in Russian at Harvard University, was inspired by his experiences in the Slavic nation as an interpreter for a government-sponsored science exhibition to compose his first book, An End to Chivalry. He later taught Russian and English literature at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
In addition to his wife, Cole is survived by a daughter, Sarah Rose Cole; a brother, Morrill; and a sister, Elizabeth.
