There’s a nice trio of specialty films to highlight this weekend from Joanna Arnow, Uberto Pasolini and Caitlin Cronenberg’s feature directorial debut.
Joanna Arnow’s micro-budget comedy The Feeling That The Time For Doing Something Has Passed world premiered in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. It follows a thirtysomething New York woman as time passes in her long-term casual Bdsm relationship, low-level corporate job, and quarrelsome Jewish family. Arnow writes, directs and stars. And that’s Bdsm, as in bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism.
The helmer is thrilled to see her feature (after 2017’s i hate myself :), and a handful of well-received shorts) launch a theatrical run, with Magnolia distributing. “That’s how I dream of my movies being seen,” Arnow tells Deadline. “It’s also so important to see comedies (on the big screen) Shared laughter with strangers is quite beautiful and healing in a way.

“Do you think people can change?” Ann (Joanna Arnow) asks her long-term dominant Allen (Scott Cohen) toward the beginning of Joanna Arnow’s second feature, The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed. Told through a series of comic vignettes, the film follows Ann through an indeterminate period of time in her early 30s as she navigates relationships, awkward family dinners, a bland corporate job, and the possibility of changing from her now-ensconced ways. As can be gleaned from its title, the potential for action or growth is faint, and Arnow builds a unique comedic style around a persistent sense of disappointment. The dominant tone is one of melancholic absurdity, with an airy timing à la the stilted awkwardness of Roy Andersson used to imbue scenes with a heaping of uneasy deadpan space on their front and back ends. We always seem to enter a scene too early or too late,...

Last week, Max finally released the trailer for their much-anticipated The Batman spin-off series, The Penguin, teeing up its fall release date. Overall, it looks highly reminiscent of Matt Reeves’ film, with the cinematography very much in the Grieg Fraser mode. But what else do we know about The Penguin? More than you may think.
The Penguin is set after The Batman.
The plot of The Penguin is set to follow the title character, once again portrayed by Colin Farrell, as he rises through the ranks of the Gotham City criminal underworld. After the events of The Batman and the flooding of Gotham, including the death of Carmine Falcone, Cobblepot desperately wants to fill the power vacuum. Colin Farrell has also indicated that the film will serve as an origin story for the Penguin, something we have seen twice on screen before in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, played by Danny DeVito.

Wak! Wak! Fans who wanted Matt Reeves’ The Batman to lean into the violence of Gotham City could be in for a treat when The Penguin arrives on Max. The spinoff series, starring Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, could find the classic villain breaking more than bones as he continues to waddle toward the top of Gotham’s criminal food chain. Speaking with MovieZine, Farrell said The Penguin is gnarlier than Reeves’ PG-13 Batman film and should be considered “incredibly violent.”
“It was a long and really wonderful experience,” Farrell said about filming The Penguin series. “It’s dark; that’s what I can tell you about it. It’s really dark. It’s really heavy, I think— it certainly was doing it. Which is not to say I didn’t have fun, I had an amazing time doing it. It’s incredibly violent. It’s one man’s rise...

The Penguin trailer offers a glimpse into the forthcoming installment of The Batman saga ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
The latest trailer for The Penguin sees Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oswald Cobblepot, alias Penguin. The trailer delves into the DC villain’s contemplation of the posthumous recognition bestowed upon a local gangster by the community during his upbringing, prompting Cobblepot to ponder the significance of such acknowledgement. “Can you imagine being remembered like that?” Cobblepot queries an off-screen character. The trailer doesn’t spill much about the story, but it does give us quick peeks at Cristin Milioti playing Sofia Falcone and Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni.
Announced in September 2021, “The Penguin” continues the saga of Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot shortly after the events depicted in “The Batman 2023,” as he manoeuvres to assert his authority within Gotham’s criminal hierarchy. The production of the eight-episode limited series commenced in...

"Can you imagine to be remembered like that?" Max has unveiled the first real teaser trailer for the spin-off series The Penguin, set to debut in the fall this year. This streaming series will follow the transformation of Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot from a disfigured nobody to the noted Gotham gangster, after the events of The Batman movie. Academy Award nominee Colin Farrell returns from The Batman (loved him in it) as Oz, bringing us his full transformation into the infamous DC Comics villain who gives Batman quite a fright. The first episodes are being directed by Craig Zobel who seems like a perfect choice for this. We featured an early production teaser last year. The full ensemble cast also has Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, Clancy Brown, Michael Zegen, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Deirdre O'Connell, James Madio, Scott Cohen, Theo Rossi, Carmen Ejogo, and François Chau. Ohhhhhhh this looks So damn good.

The Penguin aims to one day be remembered like a gangster of Gotham City yore in a new teaser trailer for Max’s series offshoot of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which is now on track for a fall 2024 release.
Ordered to series over two years ago, the eight-episode Warner Bros. Television/DC Studios drama “continues the epic crime saga” that filmmaker Reeves began in 2022 with Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Batman, and centers on the character played by Colin Farrell (beneath many prosthetics) in the film.

Inspired by, but definitely not closely adapted from, Amy Chozick’s 2018 book Chasing Hillary, The Girls on the Bus may be on Max, but it’s a throwback to a certain type of broad, big-hearted, semi-topical dramedy that TV fans used to associate with The WB.
As a female-forward workplace buddy comedy with soapy undertones, The Girls on the Bus (Chozick and The Vampire Diaries mastermind Julie Plec are credited as creators) is quite good — the casting is strong, the character dynamics appealing. As a show about journalism, The Girls on the Bus is decent — smart about a lot of things, dumb about others, but not disproportionately. As a political thriller, The Girls on the Bus is mostly a crock.
It comes together as a whole that’s not really a guilty pleasure — for the millionth time, stop being guilty about the things you like — but definitely one where you...

"I was wondering if you could have me not even talk when I come over here." Magnolia Pics has revealed an official US trailer for an indie comedy titled The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed, written and directed by and starring indie NYC filmmaker Joanna Arnow. This first premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival's Directors' Fortnight sidebar last year, and went on to play at TIFF, NYFF, Vancouver, AFI Fest, Montclair, Denver, and many others. A mosaic-style comedy following the life of a woman as time passes in her long-term casual Bdsm relationship, low-level corporate job, and quarrelsome Jewish family. Filmmaker Joanna Arnow's hilarious comedy, executive produced by Sean Baker, follows a 30-something New York woman as time passes in her relationships. Also starring Scott Cohen, Babak Tafti, Alysia Reiner, Peter Vack, and Parish Bradley. This kind of super dry, awkward humor won't be for everyone,...

Jeff Ryan, Scott Cohen, Katerina Tannenbaum, Geneva Carr and Will Chase will star in “Mooch.” The crime comedy was also written and directed by Ryan, whose credits include “Mean Spirited” and “YouthMin.”
The filmmakers received an interim agreement to work on this independent production during last year’s SAG-Afrtra strike. It recently wrapped production in Lexington, Mass.
The movie focuses on a 30-year-old caddy named Shane (Ryan), who winds up with an unexpected gig as a personal private eye for a New Jersey nightclub owner. Even though he inches closer to realizing his ambitions, his personal life spirals out of control.
“When I was in high school, my friend’s dad told me I was going to fail in life because I was a ‘Mooch,’” said Ryan. “Making this film was a dream come true, and I am proud to put my dirty laundry on screen for all to enjoy.

Lauren Graham spent a decade in a relationship with Peter Krause before the duo decided to separate. While Graham spent years in a long-term thing, she appeared almost chronically single during her time on Gilmore Girls, or maybe she just wanted to appear single. In her 2022 memoir, Have I Told You This Already?, Graham admitted to dating some of her Gilmore Girls costars. While she made it clear that Luke and Lorelai were only a love match on screen, she didn’t give up the names of her more romantic co-stars. Don’t worry; we have some theories.

In The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed, writer-director-star Joanna Arnow plays Ann, a thirtysomething woman in a long-term Bdsm relationship with the much older Allen (Scott Cohen). The film opens on a naked Ann lying in bed beside a clothed Allen, before she turns and robotically dry humps him while he feigns sleep. “I love how you don’t care if I get off,” Ann coos to him. “It’s like I don’t even exist.” While this moment immediately establishing the playful rules of Ann and Allen’s sexual agreement, Arnow also hits on an apt metaphor for the existential crisis of so many modern millennials: that they’re exposed and ignored in an unforgiving social climate still dominated by older generations.

The 2023 Cannes Market is behind us, and like clockwork, Neon managed to buy the winner of the Palme d’Or for the fourth straight year, Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall.”
But that wasn’t the only major sale. This year’s Marché du Film netted major domestic deals for some of the buzziest competition titles such as Todd Haynes’ “May December” and Aki Kaurismäki’s “Fallen Leaves,” as well as hot packages like “Paddington 3.” But uncertainty over the writers strike still loomed large, and distributors favored completed projects over packages.
Below are some of the deals we’ve tracked out of Cannes so far, and we’ll be updating this space with more sales as they come in.
Title: “Anselm”
Section: Special Screenings
Distributor: Sideshow and Janus Films
Wim Wenders had not one but two separate films play at this year’s Cannes, and now each have found a home.

There isn’t a moment wasted, and her comic timing—often with a razor-sharp rhythmic edit—is unmatched. In her previous shorts, her taste for deadpan humor is self-evident. “I love that you never do anything for me…it’s like I don’t even exist.”
That’s what Ann, a depressed thirty-something New Yorker, tells her older on-and-off Bdsm lover in the first scene of writer-director Joanna Arnow’s “The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed,” in which the filmmaker also stars as Ann. Her heroine is an existentially moribund millennial wasting away in an anonymous-feeling corporate job who passes her time with sexual debasement when not quarreling with her nagging Jewish family.
This clever and disquieting indie unfolds at a clip somnambulant enough to match its lead’s spiritual stupor, whether she’s spreading her ass for her partners (clients?) or on the phone with her needling mother insisting that, no, she isn’t running out of breath despite trudging up and down the Manhattan streets.

In The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed, Ann, a lugubrious New Yorker, sleepwalks through her daily life––colorless job, perennially disappointed parents––while maintaining a long-term sub/dom relationship with an older man. She visits her Jewish family, goes to yoga, and attempts some Internet dating. Invariably she winds up in her boyfriend’s lifeless brownstone. Executive-produced by Sean Baker, this is the feature debut of writer-director Joanna Arnow, a Brooklyn-based actor and filmmaker who made a name for herself as a wry observer of millennial sex lives and stasis with a couple of award-winning shorts: Bad at Dancing (2015) and Laying Out (2019). In Dancing, Arnow sat naked on the floor, casually asking for advice from a friend having sex right in front of her. The sense that everyone around you is getting their shit together (and maybe getting laid) is present again here; yet eight years hence,...

It takes a moment to settle into the rhythm of Joanna Arnow’s droll directorial debut The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed. The beginning riffs on a familiar scene of lovers in post-coital repose before offering something so different, it’s hard not to laugh. Ann (Arnow) lays on the sheets, staring at Allen (Scott Cohen), who is asleep under the covers. She inches closer until she’s on top of him. Then, the humping begins. “I like how you don’t care if I get off,” she says, “because it’s like I don’t even exist.” To that, her lover tiredly replies: “Can you not?”

When we are introduced to Jewish thirtysomething Ann at the start of writer-director-star Joanna Arnow’s feature debut “The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed,” she has never been in a conventional relationship. She engages in submissive sexual dynamics with “sexfriends” and seems dimly uneasy that the most longstanding of these, with Allen (Scott Cohen), is now clocking in at around a decade, with neither one of them knowing very much about the other. She asks him about himself; it turns out he’s a Zionist. She rolls away from him.
The anthropologist David Graeber has analyzed the harm caused to society and individuals by the existence of meaningless so-called “bullshit jobs.” Ann is employed in a classic example of one of these: the objectives are hazy, the prospects limited; she is given an award for having worked in her office for one year and has to...

"The new Kingpin of Gotham." HBO Max (now known as only "Max") has revealed a first look production teaser for the upcoming spin-off series The Penguin, currently set to arrive sometime in early 2024. Luke Danes and Lorelai Gilmore were the endgame couple of Gilmore Girls, and for a good reason. Fans waited four long seasons to see the perky inn owner and the surly diner owner finally kiss. For those four seasons, showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino turned up the heat on the character’s sexual tension. While things started to heat up in season 3, if we look closely, there were a lot of moments that foreshadowed their future love affair in the show’s very first season. We’ve collected the most obvious examples.
‘Gilmore Girls’ fans think Amy Sherman-Palladino foreshadowed Luke and Lorelai’s relationship in the pilot
Throughout season 1 of Gilmore Girls, Luke, and Lorelai’s future romance was hinted at. Fans are certain the decision was a purposeful one. They even think the opening scene, in which Lorelai begged Luke for another cup of coffee, was the first instance of foreshadowing.

Matt Reeves may be planning his Batman film saga as a trilogy, but that doesn't mean we'll only be seeing his take on Gotham City inside those films. Spin-off films and TV series are in the works, which will highlight all the villains who make up Batman's rogues gallery; the Scarecrow, Clayface, and Professor Pyg have been mentioned as potential stars.
The spin-off furthest along in production stars Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin. Farrell had a supporting role in "The Batman," with Penguin (or "Oz" as he prefers) being the right-hand of crime lord Carmine Falcone (John Turturro). With his boss out of the picture, Oz is looking to become Gotham's new kingpin. The Penguin's club, the Iceberg Lounge, was also featured as a recurring setting in "The Batman," albeit reimagined from a high-class crib into an underground rave spot.

Gilmore Girls might not have been a show about romance at its core, but more than a few love interests walked in and out of Lorelai Gilmore’s life during the show’s seven-season run. Max Medina was Lorelai’s first real love interest on Gilmore Girls. While the duo never actually got married, they got close. Do you remember how the former couple’s relationship played out?
Max Medina pursued Lorelai Gilmore
Max Medina and Lorelai Gilmore first met in the fourth episode of Gilmore Girls. He was Rory Gilmore’s English teacher at Chilton. Despite his position at the school, Max was taken with Lorelai and tirelessly pursued her. The duo had their first date a few episodes later when Stars Hollow was blanketed in snow, and Max found himself inexplicably stuck in the tiny Connecticut hamlet. Their relationship moved along quickly from there.

In season 1 of Gilmore Girls, Lorelai Gilmore insisted that she rarely dated. While that may have been true, she made an exception for Max Medina, Rory’s dreamy English teacher. Lorelai and Max’s relationship hit a few rough patches, but the duo was engaged by the end of season 1. They never actually wed, though. Max floated in and out of Lorelai’s life until season 3, when he disappeared for good. Max isn’t the most beloved of Lorelai’s suitors. Gilmore Girls fans have plenty of reasons to dislike Max Medina, but we think he was alright. We are here to defend Max Medina.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the East New York series premiere.] The Amanda Warren-led East New York joins a (long) list of CBS procedurals, and while the series premiere introduces all the big shots and starts playing around with the relationships, the one we find most intriguing is no surprise: that between Warren’s Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood and Jimmy Smits’ Chief John Suarez. Suarez is the borough commander (Haywood’s boss’ boss) and the one to introduce her to both the deputy mayor (Darien Sills-Evans’ Raymond Sharpe) and real estate developer Adam Lustig (Scott Cohen), whom she later arrests for his involvement in the case Detective Tommy Killian (Kevin Rankin) and Detective Crystal Morales (Elizabeth Rodriguez) work. Sharpe checks that Haywood’s strength is in management. “I’ll leave it to others to decide where my strength is,” she tells him. Once it’s just the two of them, Suarez welcomes her to East New York. The Story of Film: A New Generation opens at two dozen theaters this weekend — Laemmle Royal in LA, Museum of the Moving Image in NY, Music Box Theatre in Chicago and Brattle in Cambridge. It’s a mix of arthouses, cinematheques, museums and even a few multiplexes for Mark Cousins’ follow-up to his 15-hour, 2011 opus The Story Of Film: An Odyssey. (This one clocks a relatively brief three hours.)
Several theaters are programming repertory series with the release, “which we feel will elevate its profile and continue the conversation,” said Kyle Westphal, head of theatrical sales for Music Box Films, the distributor for both installments.
A New Generation debuted at Cannes to strong reviews, Deadline’s here. Now, Westphal said, the first film, only available in standard definition, has been remastered in HD and both works will be released in a Blu-ray box set. The earlier work, which essentially played...

"My parents, the whole family, he murdered them all!!" MovieFarm has unveiled an official trailer for a film titled Beautiful Blue Eyes, originally from 2009 finally getting an actual wide release in theaters this week. The indie film is acclaimed American actor Roy Scheider's final feature before he passed away in early 2008. A retired cop seeks revenge against an elderly man he's convinced is the Nazi who slaughtered his family during World War II. The film was retitled (from Iron Cross) when Scheider suggested this new title just a few days before he passed, and the director kept it in honor of Roy. In addition to Roy Scheider (best known as "Brody" in Jaws), the film also stars Scott Cohen, Sarah Bolger, Helmut Berger, and Alexander Newton, who plays the young Joseph. I'm not entirely sure why it took so many years to give this film a proper release, but...

The last time we saw Dr. Billie Sutton (Jessica Lucas) and her son, Trevor (Miles Fowler), onscreen together was after he revealed he’s the proof the Medical Board needed to prove Dr. Robert Porter (Scott Cohen) raped her when she was 13. And in the March 29 episode of The Resident, we’ll see them reunite. TV Insider has an exclusive sneak peek at Trevor returning his mother’s calls. “I’m so glad you finally called,” Billie says. “Are you Ok?” He is, he confirms, explaining, “I’m sorry I took so long to get back to you. I’m just dealing with a lot of stuff.” She can understand, given what he learned, but he interrupts her before she can say too much about that. “There’s some stuff I want to tell you in person,” He says. She agrees, adding, “Just know I’ve been worried about you.
