Sheryl Lee Ralph and Lisa Ann Walter from Abbott Elementary got to call roll at the start of the Disney Upfront Tuesday, which allowed many of the stars from the studio’s movies and networks to sound off (in a video) before the presentation kicked off at the North Javits Center.
And what’s an ABC upfront without the voice of Walt Disney? Yup, he was (heard) there, too. Here’s what else happened at the afternoon shindig:
Emma Stone, whose Oscar acceptance speech for Poor Things was replayed during the opening montage, kicked off the event to remind everyone that the studio was founded more than 100 years ago. Her primary job, though? She was there to introduce Disney CEO Bob Iger. Disney CEO Bob Iger (Disney/Jennifer Pottheiser) Iger returned to the upfront stage, sans tie with his white shirt, for the first time in 30 years. He promised that...

Jason Kelce, who retired earlier this year after 13 years with the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles, told the crowd at Disney’s upfront how pumped he is to be joining “Monday Night Freakin’ Football!”
While he kept his shirt on, Kelce summoned the emotional intensity of his retirement announcement. When Abbot Elementary’s Quinta Brunson introduced him, Kelce hoisted her up off her feet, prompting the TV creator to joke that she felt like she’d just been on the Guardians of the Galaxy ride.
Kelce’s retirement was magnified by him becoming a player in the widely obsessed about romance between his brother, Travis, a member of the Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs, and pop superstar Taylor Swift. As the Chiefs marched through the playoffs, the Eagles wound up at home, giving Jason Kelce the chance to...

The Pivot podcast host Ryan Clark has heard the discourse about what Jonathan Owens said about wife Simone Biles on an episode of his show, and he is not here for it.
In a video posted on social media, Clark recounted the conversation he had with football safety, noting that he was telling the story of how he met Biles with so much love in his eyes, and now his joke about being the catch for the gymnast is being blown out of proportion.
“Every time they looked at one another, you can tell how beautiful [their meet] was to them,” he said. “But everyone has now twisted that and taken that and made it something negative. But what people haven’t done is watch the entire show.”
He explained that Owens talked about how Biles changed his life and how as soon as they met, it was history. They were immediately connected.

The four-time Olympic gold medalist married NFL player Jonathan Owens in April.

Jonathan‘s comments sparked tons of online criticism, with many claiming that the Green Bay Packers player was attempting to “humble” her and downplay her accomplishments.

The longtime ESPN anchor will become the new host of Monday Night Countdown, the network’s popular NFL pregame show. He replaces Suzy Kolber, who had hosted the program since 2015 but was let go last month in a wave of layoffs.

The HBO series "Avenue 5" is one of the funniest shows on television. The story, which comes to us from "Veep" creator Armando Iannucci, is set in the near future on a luxury spaceliner that gets knocked off course. Their weeks-long cruise through space has now turned into an eight-year journey. The ship is owned by a billionaire named Herman Judd (Josh Gad), who is ... well, let's say that Elon Musk might recognize himself in this character. Judd wanted the passengers to see only good-looking people in the crew, so he hired a bunch of actors to fake it while the real crew is shoved below deck in a bit of a hovel.
Hugh Laurie plays Captain Ryan Clark, one of the actors who knows nothing about running the ship. The two seasons we have so far have given us a look at a future with extinct camels, no more fruit,...

The series took place in the not-so-distant future when space tourism is a booming business. Per the official logline, “While manning a luxury spacecraft owned by Herman Judd (Gad), Captain Ryan Clark...

The HBO series "Avenue 5" is one of the funniest shows on television right now, and if you aren't watching, you're missing out. It's set in the future when luxury cruises on spaceships are common. This particular ship, Avenue 5, is owned by obnoxious billionaire Herman Judd (Josh Gad). On one particular cruise, the biggest yoga class ever is held, but after a malfunction, the giant group of bendy people is thrown against one wall, knocking the ship off course. Now their short cruise is going to take three whole years.
The other issue? The only person who could have fixed it is dead. The crew everyone sees is made up of actors, including Hugh Laurie's character Ryan Clark, while the actual crew (minus one engineer) is shoved in a crappy room in the bowels of the ship. Everything goes awry. If this helps you imagine what's going on with this series,...

There is — as one or two people have noted in the past — too much TV. I don’t mean that in a figurative sense. It’s not like I’m a hungry diner who’s handed a menu that’s seven pages long — there’s not too much food on the menu, there are just too many choices for someone who needs to eat right now. No, when it comes to television, there is literally too much. Unlike the diner, you can’t come back every day, month after month, sampling a new plate until you’ve tried them all. TV is churning out fresh choices all the damn time, making it impossible to watch everything you should watch, everything you need to watch, and everything you actually want to watch.
The point of this strained metaphor is two-fold: 1) I should eat dinner, and 2) when it comes to the vexing,...

You may have experienced a nightmare travel delay in the last year, but rest assured, you had it better than the passengers on HBO’s Avenue 5. The astronomically funny social satire from Veep creator Armando Iannucci is set 40 years in the future, when 5,000 people have embarked on an eight-week round-trip luxury cruise to Saturn on the spaceship Avenue 5. In the first season, one outrageous problem after another arose on the vessel owned by narcissistic billionaire Herman Judd (Josh Gad) and allegedly captained by Hugh Laurie’s fraud Ryan Clark: from leaked human waste orbiting the ship to being knocked off course twice. As of the March 2020 finale, their scheduled arrival time back to Earth is eight years. Season 2 picks up five months later, and Ryan — who’s really an actor with an affinity for accents, alcohol and throuples — has yet to inform the passengers ...

HBO has released a new trailer for the second season of its original series, "Avenue 5." The show was created by two-time Emmy Award-winner Armando Iannucci and stars Hugh Laurie ("House") and Josh Gad ("Beauty and the Beast"). If you haven't watched it yet, it's the story set about 40 years in the future aboard an interstellar spaceship. It's owned by clueless billionaire Herman Judd (Gad in a ponytail and some pretty wild outfits), who hired mainly attractive actors and models for his crew, so everyone would look good on the bridge and please the passengers. The ship itself is actually run by a second crew who weren't deemed pretty enough to be seen.
The titular space cruiser, Avenue 5, was supposed to be out on an eight-week cruise, but the death of an engineer and the temporary loss of artificial gravity changed their course. Instead of eight weeks, the ship would...

Set 40 years into the future, series creator Armando Iannucci takes viewers into his reimagined world on the maiden voyage of “Avenue 5.” Although it will take another four decades before anyone can praise Iannucci on his predictions, the hilarious HBO comedy leaves fans wondering if flashy tracksuits, inadequate personnel and cheap billion dollar ships will be a part of everyone’s unforeseen future.

Armando Iannucci’s HBO series “Avenue 5” feels like the catastrophe comedy perfectly suited for our unprecedented times. The freshman series chronicles a futuristic, luxurious journey around Saturn that goes horrendously off course thanks in part to the horribly inept leadership of its actor-turned-captain Ryan Clark (Hugh Laurie) and a revolution amongst its privileged passengers.
The show spotlights and satirizes the failures of leadership during a major crisis and the follies of those who disbelieve scientific truths, but despite this unintentional timeliness in the age of a global pandemic “Avenue 5” lags significantly in the Comedy races in our combined Emmy odds.
See our video interview with ‘Avenue 5’ star Suzy Nakamura
Yet the freshman series also boasts similarities to Iannucci’s preceding HBO comedy series “Veep” that could foreshadow some Emmy success come nominations morning. Not only did Iannucci reassemble much of his creative team from “Veep” to work on “Avenue 5,...

Avenue 5 Episode 9
Avenue 5 strays way off course to bring in the season finale. This may be the last we’re going to see these people for a year, but they found a way to hang in there much longer. This, of course, goes against everything they’ve been trying to accomplish, but that’s what makes for comedies of errors. Last week’s episode ended on a cliffhanger. The season finale begins with a race against time.
The Avenue 5 crew is under a 60-minute deadline to load and dump all the non-essentials because that’s when the ship will hit the trajectory sweet spot to cut some time off the ship’s three-and-a-half-year stretch. Karen (Rebecca Front) and Iris (Suzy Nakamura) are spearheading the effort to dump as much extra weight as possible. This will both lighten the load and push...

Avenue 5 Episode 8
Avenue 5‘s “This is Physically Hurting Me,” finds a new way to exploit the lowest common denominator. It begins with the privileged class working together to rid themselves of material objects which must be jettisoned into space to save their lives. It devolves into a mass delusion which thins the herd. The cynical disbelief of human nature turns the humor as black as a starless night.
The episode is dark even while the guests are at their most altruistic, which Matt (Zach Woods) says is like in an estate sale when you’re not dead. While most of the passengers are deciding which shoes to give up, Frank (Andy Buckley) jokes that his wife Karen (Rebecca Front), the most entitled of the ship’s VIP class, has been trying to toss him into the cosmic garbage chute. The guests take it seriously.

Avenue 5 Episode 7
The shit remains thick on Avenue 5, episode 7, “Are You a Spider, Matt,” but the cold shell softens. The cynicism at the heart of the series finally succumbs to the lack of a worthy target. Up to this point, the science fiction comedy has been building the dark menace of corporate incompetence to what looked like some kind of cannibalistic parable of greed’s short sighted menace. Now we find it’s only the condiments which will be missing.
After narrowly averting a passenger mutiny, the crew placates the guests like an awkward marriage of inconvenience. Sure, they’re stuck in space but they can still swim like mermaids, drink like beasts, and marvel at the illuminated circle of turds. But there is still the question of jettisoning 500 guests into space to lighten the load.
We get some promise early in...

HBO has renewed the Hugh Laurie-headlined chaotic space comedy, Avenue 5, for a second season.
Avenue 5 Season 2 is officially on HBO’s proverbial cruise itinerary.
While the freshman HBO sci-fi comedy series, the latest brainchild of Veep creator Armando Ianucci, crosses the midway point of its January 19-launched nine-episode inaugural season, the premium cable channel has seen enough from it to greenlight Avenue 5 for a second season. The outer-space ensemble series, set 40 years in the future, is headlined by former House star (and Veep vet) Hugh Laurie, who plays Ryan Clark, the figurehead actor captain of the titular leisure space vessel that, due to a disaster, is forced to endure a three-year voyage home.
As Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, expresses in a statement:

“We’ve loved every minute of Avenue 5’s inaugural voyage,” said Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO Programming. “Armando Iannucci and his team are masters of smart and incisive comedy, and the ensemble cast, brilliantly captained by Hugh Laurie, is second to none. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for our hapless heroes in season two.”

While making his onscreen debut in Armando Iannucci’s HBO series, Hugh Laurie gets the hero’s treatment. Doors part, the silver-haired leader emerges, and Laurie’s character strides down a hallway filled with supporters, greeting them with an encouraging smile and a heartening quip. They’re all thrilled to see him, and why shouldn’t they be? Senator Tom James is there to save the day.
Oh, I’m sorry — did you think we were talking about Captain Ryan Clark, Laurie’s part in the new HBO series, “Avenue 5”? Well, you’re not wrong. The same description applies to both roles Iannucci created for Laurie: the coveted Vice Presidential candidate called in to save Selina Meyer’s campaign on “Veep” and the captain of a luxury cruise ship tasked with saving the lives of everyone onboard.
“I had not thought of that,” Laurie told IndieWire while comparing the two roles.

Avenue 5 Episode 4
In the opening montage of Avenue 5, episode 4, " Wait a Minute, Then Who Was That on the Ladder?," we see astronaut Spike Martin (Ethan Phillips), kibitzing on the bridge. He's trying to look at the dials and sensor readers which the crew are expertly fingering, especially the hand model who was born for the job. Captain Ryan Clark (Hugh Laurie) is doing his best to keep the astronaut away for the faux equipment because he's the only one on board who might be able to actually read what they say.
The irony is this skill could find a solution to clean up the captain's mess, except the astronaut is also ill-equipped to do it. Spike Martin was the first Canadian to land on Mars.
