Cuddly Kung Fu master Po the Panda returns to the big screen for a fourth instalment of the animated action comedy franchise, eight years after Kung Fu Panda 3. Unfortunately, it’s fair to say that the law of diminishing returns has very much kicked in, because while the film is entirely amiable, it doesn’t quite deliver the same punch, and frequently feels like it’s going through the motions.
The film begins in the Valley of Peace, where Po (Jack Black) is content with his life as the legendary Dragon Warrior, occasionally defeating the odd villain with his sweet kung-fu skills and using his standing in the community to open a tofu-and-noodle shop.

The fourth installment of the animated martial arts movie Kung Fu Panda will be released after nearly eight years. The third installment, which was released in 2016, was long before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. The computer-animated comedy film is one of the most successful animated movie series.

There’s a running gag in Kung Fu Panda 4 about Po (Jack Black) needing to workshop more profound words of wisdom if he’s going to be a spiritual leader. It’s easy to read it as a meta commentary on the series itself wanting for more depth if it’s going to continue moving forward. The film is a good time, and it doesn’t exactly betray any of Kung Fu Panda’s strengths, but it also exhibits the telltale signs of a series struggling to justify its existence.
In fairness, the sense that Po’s talents might be better utilized elsewhere—like, say, in one of the three (!) Netflix cartoons based on the films—is baked into the plot here, with Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) telling Po that the time has come to choose a new Dragon Master so that he may spread enlightenment to the rest of his valley.

Since its debut in 2008, DreamWorks’ kickass charmer Po, aka Kung Fu Panda, has racked up nearly $2 billion at the global box office over the course of three films, the most recent being eight years ago. A lot has changed in the world of animation in that time as well as in the life of Po, as witnessed by the storyline screenwriters have cooked up for this rich and energetic fourth entry into the franchise. Visually, this one tops them all, and pound for pound the whole movie from director Mike Mitchell, taking the helm of the Kfp series for the first time, is another winner bound to add to the impressive legacy of this lovable Chinese bear.
Plotwise, Po (again voiced by the inimitable Jack Black) has been content to be a successful Dragon Warrior vanquishing villains and seemingly with no further ambition. However, when Kung Fu Master Shifa (Dustin Hoffman...

Endings of shows usually demand another season when certain characters could come back together, an ominous plot point gets left open or the story lends itself to more world-building. Apple TV+’s “Strange Planet” adaptation of Nathan W. Pyle’s webcomic contains all three.
Season 1 ended with a literal cliffhanger.
The owner of cliffside diner Careful Now (Lori Tan Chinn) accidentally blows a hole near the restaurant with fireworks. It’s up to the Careful Now manager (Hannah Einbinder) and their new love interest, the regular customer (Danny Pudi), to find a solution to the thick fog that spews from the hole. The fog obscures the eclipse that populace celebrates on Double Shadow Day.
At the end of the day, the hole is filled by flipfloppers (pancakes) and Double Shadow Day is seemingly saved. But when the owner begins eating the pancakes, the fate of “Strange Planet” inhabitants is left uncertain.

It’s not hard to understand why Dan Harmon would have been drawn to Nathan W. Pyle’s Strange Planet comics for his latest TV project. Harmon’s Community and Rick and Morty are beloved for the ways they experiment with genre, tone, and sheer self-awareness. But once you strip away the formal playfulness, both shows are most obviously concerned with how society works, on both large and small scales. Community was called that not because the characters were all attending community college, but because Harmon wanted to show how...

If you’re unfamiliar with Nathan W. Pyle’s Strange Planet comics, they usually go something like this: Two unnamed balloon-headed aliens engage in a brief chat about whatever they’re doing. The activities themselves are usually mundane — hiking, snacking, petting a cat. What’s odd is the way they talk about them, with a frankness that so much of human language and culture has been designed to avoid.
“We have things but we have hidden them,” a couple announce to guests entering their just-cleaned home. “Now feel completely helpless,” a dentist tells a reclining patient. Suntans are “star damage,” a kiss is a “mouthpush,” tea is “hot leaf liquid.” The cleverest strips turn the banal alien, and occasionally tap into the bigger fears undergirding all these deceptions and distractions: “Life will be full of unpleasant sensations,” a parent gently reprimands a child refusing to eat their “leaves” (i.e.

Awkwafina is… searching for her first Emmy nomination. The multi-hyphenate star has seen her status as a performer and creative rise rapidly within the last few years but she has yet to receive the recognition a comedian of her talents might well deserve from the Emmys.
With “Awkwafina is Nora From Queens,” however, that could change. Created by Awkwafina and “Family Guy” and “American Dad” writer/producer Teresa Hsiao, this Comedy Central hit is a vehicle for Awkwafina’s star power. It follows Awkwafina as Nora, a fictionalized version of herself, who is a 20-year-old-something woman living in Queens, New York who longs for something better than she currently has. She finds herself in various situations, ranging from the aggravating to the bizarre, and has to deal with her family, too, led by her dad (Bd Wong) and grandma (Lori Tan Chinn). The show demonstrates Awkwafina’s unique comedy stylings...
