The 2000s saw the action genre in a state of flux. The Matrix revolutionized everything at the end of the previous decade, The Bourne Supremacy would make shaky cameras standard practice in 2004, and the MCU would take flight with Iron Man in 2008. At the same time, Michael Bay reached his ultimate form with Bad Boys II, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Kill Bill made kung fu classy, and Oldboy changed the way we look at hallways.
Within those changes came a host of greats that didn’t get the same attention. Some of these movies represent the first steps in the development of those who would define the genre, such as Scott Adkins and Gareth Evans. Some find stars at the height of the powers, such as Donny Yen and Michael Jai White. And some are just cool, because that’s really all an action movie needs.

Disney's 1998 animated film "Mulan" gave us one of the most badass Disney women the company has ever created. The movie tells the story of Fa Mulan, a young woman who does not fit into the traditional mold of the other Chinese women in her village. Her family is constantly embarrassed by her nontraditional behavior, but they still hold out hope of her one day bestowing honor upon their family name. When news comes of the Huns attacking imperial China, every family is instructed to send one able-bodied soldier to fight in the army. Mulan's father, an ailing former soldier, is fully prepared to go into battle even though doing so will most certainly lead to his death. Not wanting to lose him to the war, Mulan secretly enlists in his place, saving his life. She disguises herself as a man, and quickly proves her strength and her worth as a...

The second “Drunken Master” may share a title, a protagonist in Jackie Chan, a main character in Wong Fei-hung, and the concept of Drunken Boxing, but in reality, is a completely different animal than the original, on a number of levels, with Lau Kar-leung aiming intensely in a number of sociopolitical comments, in contrast to Yuen Woo-ping’s work, which focused mostly on entertainment. This approach has led the former to be named one of the top 100 best films of all time by Time magazine in 2005, while the British Film Institute (BFI) selected it as one among the ten best action movies of all time.

The company has recently taken a sales role on Pema Tseden’s “Jinpa,” which has its world premiere in the Horizonte section at the Venice festival. That will be followed by the film’s North American launch in Toronto.
The company is also handling international rights to the Jingle Ma-directed mainstream action film “Euro Raiders.” The film stars Tony Leung Chiu-wai, who for decades was represented by Wong’s Jettone company. The film releases this week in China.
For the past nine years, Leung had been head of sales at Distribution Workshop. She left earlier this year when the firm relocated from Hong Kong to Taiwan. In her new role, Leung will remain based in Hong Kong.

With plans afoot for a live action take on Mulan, we look at the challenges facing Disney...
After more than 50 years of making animated features, Disney have now turned their attention to live-action adaptations of their famous films. After releases such as 101 Dalmatians (1996), Maleficent (2014) and Cinderella (2015), the studio's new creative direction has earned critical acclaim and financial success. It is also making its mark on the global box office, as the recently released Beauty And The Beast remake has earned small change in the region of $1.2bn and counting.
Among the upcoming remakes planned is Mulan, which already has fans of the 1998 Disney film debating about its faithfulness to the animated feature. That's especially so given reports about director Niki Caro's indecisiveness regarding the inclusion of songs such as Honour To Us All and I'll Make A Man Out Of You, as well as the...

Probably one of the least known works of Yonfan, “Immortal Story” is a film that exemplifies love and its complexity, as much as Macao.
Mei Ling is an orphan girl with a great voice living in Macao, who depends on her aunt to make decisions for her. Her only friend is a kid named Le Wen Chi, who seems to idolize her, but also has a tendency for stealing. Eventually he finds a wallet and they decide to return it to Chung Chuen, a rich foreigner who is staying in the place with some colleagues. When Chung visits the restaurant Mei Ling is performing, he falls in love with her and the feeling is mutual. However, he eventually has to leave, and Mei Ling, despite having his address, decides not to ever write him, wary of the difference in social status.
After some years, she meets Pak Lan, an owner...

A cameraman working on the latest Jackie Chan pic Skiptrace has drowned while filming, according to local reports. Fifty-one-year-old Chan Kwok-hung died after a vessel carrying his film crew capsized off Lantau Island this morning, writes the South China Morning Post.

Hong Kong director Jingle Ma follows up “Love You You” and “Mulan” with more cinematic popcorn in the glossy form of “Speed Angels”. In this latest bid for commercial success and mass appeal, Ma takes the high concept premise of putting good looking actresses behind the wheels of fast cars and throws in pretty much every soap opera style twist imaginable, making for a wacky mix of road racing and tears. The film certainly deserves credit for pulling together an impressive trio of leading ladies, headlined by Rene Liu (“Starry Starry Night”), Tang Wei (“Wu Xia”) and Cecilia Cheung (“Legendary Amazons”), as well as a pan-Asian supporting cast that includes pop star and real life racer Jimmy Lin (“If I Were You”), popular Korean television actor Han Jae Suk (“The Great Merchant”), and Kitamura Kazuki (“Kaibutsu-Kun: The Movie”) and Tanaka Chie (“Cape No.7”) from Japan. The film kicks off with...

While I doubt anybody had any serious expectations for Jingle Ma's Speed Angels, the premise itself surely could have yielded something more trashy and entertaining than this cinematic lemon. The story of three female racing drivers, whose personal lives overlap and intersect more often off the track than their cars do on it, is a terminable bore that struggles to get out of first gear. For every minute of onscreen racing, we must endure half an hour of insufferable melodrama, making a two-hour movie feel like Le Mans.Bing (Rene Liu) and Mei (Cecilia Cheung) are best friends as well as teammates in the Speed Angels all-girl motor racing team. However, on the day of her wedding, Bing discovers that her Japanese fiancé, Asano (Kitamura Kazuki)...

I’m not ashamed to admit that “Speed Angels” looks interesting. Okay, maybe just a little ashamed, but it’s totally manageable. If, like me, you’re oddly intrigued with this upcoming action-packed racing flick, then you’ll probably enjoy the embedded video. Even if you don’t speak the language, at least there are plenty of pretty things to look at. And I’m not talking about Jingle Ma. Strangely, I’m encountering three separate release dates for the flick, which is a little confusing. IMDb claims it will hit theaters in Hong Kong on December 29th, 2011, while the posters boldly proclaim the date to be December 28th, 2011. Adding to the confusion is the latest one-sheet, which has the film bowing on January 5th, 2012. My advice: Check local listings. The featurette, as well as the film’s trailer, lie below...

Well, it’s actually 35 seconds long, but I’d like to think that you get the idea. Veteran filmmaker Jingle Ma has a brand new action-packed cheesefest on the cinematic horizon, a high-octane racing flick called “Speed Angels”. Hot girls and fast cars — it’s a goofy little recipe that makes perfect cinematic sense. Below you’ll find the first trailer for veteran director Jingle Ma’s upcoming racing flick “Speed Angels”, an effort which stars Tang Wei, Cecilia Cheung, and Rene Liu. There isn’t too much information floating around about this project at the moment, but you really don’t need to know much about the flick beyond its stars, its cars, and the fact that it opens in China very soon. Mulan Legendary Warrior
Stars: Zhao Wei, Jaycee Chan, Rongguang Yu | Written by Ting Zhang | Directed by Jingle Ma
Cast your mind back to the heady days of 1998 and you may remember Disney’s animated interpretation of a sixth century Chinese poem, Mulan. Just over a decade later, the poem has been reinterpreted once more, this time as a full-on, live action epic. Jingle Ma directs Zhao Wei (who has previously starred in Shaolin Soccer and Red Cliff and also boasts a pop career) as the titular heroine.
For those unfamiliar with the story, Mulan disguises herself as a man and enlists in the Chinese army to save her ailing father from going to war once more with the invading Rouran tribes.
Being rather good in a scrap, Mulan quickly rises through the ranks and becomes a hero, though she must constantly hide her true identity, known only to childhood friend Tiger (Jaycee Chan,...

Director Jingle Ma’s uber lavish live-action period epic Mulan - starring Vicki Zhao (Red Cliff; 14 Blades; Shaolin Soccer) and Jaycee Chan (Twins Effect 2) - is heading for a UK DVD release, and what’d ya know we’ve got the UK trailer to with it. Mulan will be released as a two disc Ultimate Edition DVD, and single disc Blu-ray, by Cine Asia on 21st June. Synopsis: When the emperor issues a decree that all families in the Northern Province must defend their homeland against the barbarian Rouran hordes, Mulan, a young girl from a military family without a male heir, disguises herself as a male soldier and enlists in the army rather than expose her aging father to the horrors of the battlefield. As the conflict develops and the invading armies close in, Mulan’s remarkable courage and insights into the art of war see her elevated through...

Director: Jingle Ma. Review: Adam Wing. Otherwise known as ‘the one without the red dragon’, Mulan is directed by Jingle Ma (Butterfly Lovers) with Vicki Zhao taking centre stage as the gender-bending heroine Hua Mulan, the filial daughter who famously adopts male guise to take her father's place on the battlefield. Mulan grows into a great warrior while working hard to keep her true identity secret, Aloys Chen (Painted Skin) plays the token love interest and Hu Jun brings pantomime sensibilities to the table as a ruthless leader. Jaycee Chan makes up the numbers as a free-spirited soldier, with CJ7 child actress Xu Jiao, Korean-American Mando-pop singer Nicky Lee, and Russian singer Vitas offering diverse supporting turns with mixed results. I’ve always been a big fan of Vicky Zhao, and she’s probably my first choice of leading lady for this 2009 update. Well, other than Hilary Swank, but I...

Given the continuing popularity of the Chinese costume epic, it’s pretty much inevitable that all manner of legends and enduring tales will be dusted off and brought to the screen as blockbusters. And so up steps director Jingle Ma, known for commercial hits such as the recent “Butterfly Lovers” and “Playboy Cops”, with a new, big budget, all star version of the legend of “Mulan”. The story has certain proved a favourite through the years, having been adapted many times in the past, even enjoying the dubious distinction of having been made into a cartoon over in Hollywood by Disney. Here, Ma offers up a somewhat more grounded take, bringing in top actress and recent “Red Cliff” heroine Vicki Zhao as the fabled girl in general’s clothing. Taking on the role of the titular Hua Mulan, she plays a young girl who disguises herself as a man to...

The DVD (Region 3) and BluRay (Region A) release comes February 8th. For those unfamiliar with region coding, the DVD release will require the use of special equipment outside of Asia but the BluRay will play just fine on North American equipment. Both versions are English friendly.
In slightly less exciting, but still noteworthy news, Jay Chou action-adventure The Treasure Hunters (on DVD only) and Jingle Ma's historical epic Mulan (DVD and BluRay) are both dropping at roughly the same time.
